0:28 totally describes me. I am so sensitive to people's body language, facial expressions, etc., looking for ANY sign they are unhappy. If they are anything less than neutral, I get anxious. I thought this was just me.

Not at all, this is very common. It's also something you can completely overcome.

Good news, Dr Aziz and comments page! I went to a Ross store and they only had one cashier working and two were standing around at their registers, ignoring the customers. The old me would have just stood there and waited for the one cashier, but today I spoke up and said, "Are either one of you open?" I wasn't rude, but was assertive, even though I felt jumpy inside after asking.
I then had to deal with the nice guy postmortems after I left (geez, was I rude? Should I have just waited it out?) I then started chanting "I am completely independent from the good or bad opinions of others" and I felt confident again.
    :-) thanks again

Great video. I spent years thinking I was stupid because SO many people used to say that. It was a confusing. I couldn't see the board at school and I still was called stupid and thought I was stupid. At the workplace people played pranks on me for years; I was seen as a target as I was nice. Over the;past few years I have had to work on my inner self esteem and one of the things i did was volunteer in the community and now volunteer with the police. I have even WON wards... so in my head. I am that person must be good at something as I have won awards so i have EVIDENCE I am good at something.. Building up qualifications and skills really helps build up your self esteem. T

My mom terrified me when I was younger and in school; she always SCREAMED if I didn't get the best grades in my class. I would even hide the grades sometimes. After that, I always felt inferior to my friends who got better grades than I did. I still don't feel confident in my abilities.

I did have a hard time. It feels like I'm not enough, not suitable enough to carry my responsibilities, not enough to be equal to new people I have to live with. Ive done many stupid things that made me embarrass myself and know I'm trying too hard to not do it again becoming like a plain background to my surroundings. This video did striked more than enough points for me so I'll give it a try. I'll try to live up on my expectations to myself, I'll try the methods you introduced to me

Also, I think it's very helpful to understand your rights and have perspective.
You have the right to say NO to people, a right means you can choose
however you see fit, regardless of if anyone else like it or not.
Whether they approve of it or not, is irrelevant when we're talking about rights.
When people are trying to use their approval to manipulate you, it is them
who are crossing the line, not you. When something is not your problem,
    well, it's not your problem.
    Perspective can be very empowering.

And, a lot of Royal Highness these days, they think they can make you
do whatever they want, just because they asked nicely.
Sorry, you can ask me nicely, and I still have the right to say no to you.
Understanding my rights is not the same as being a jerk.
Disrespecting other people's rights, however, would qualify.

I like what you say here about introspection. All of my remembered history is in this ultra-connected world, so I honestly forget that I need to just be with myself sometimes. It sounds so obvious, but it's not to me, and I suspect this is endemic to my generation. My alarm goes off and I immediately look at reddit or Facebook before I even have time to really form thoughts. I go to sleep the same way. Thanks for the wake-up call.

Hi Dr Aziz, thanks for the helpful videos. One issue I encountered was when I try to lower my filter, I end up blurting some things that pop into my head but they are quite irrelevant to the conversation or even if they are relevant, I blurt out quite short and quick phrases that people don't really respond to and the conversation ends. Is there anything I can do to solve this? Also do you have any advice on improving my general ability to hold conversations besides improving confidence, in terms of the content of what I say?

When you say you had social anxiety, was it the actual disorder, or are you using "social anxiety" colloquially to mean shyness etc?
    Thanks

    • @GetMoreConfidence

Social Anxiety covers a host of symptoms. Any one, or combination of them, can mean you're experiencing social anxiety. But there is a more technical application called Social Anxiety Disorder. your advice is reaally good but- to break free from those habits takes time and dedication and patience- u didnt feel bad about yourself just one day when u woke up- its a thought turned to a belief over time- also even if your parents were nice to u but you looked up to your older sibling more and they were harsh to you- your self estemm will be low to nonexistent, thats a very superficial explanation but you get the idea

@@GetMoreConfidence Well, I started introspection and found that the small achievements that I've been having everyday, be it cleaning my place or being regular at the gym and being social despite the bumpy experience, added more to my confidence and eventually to my self-satisfaction and that, eventually led me to say that its okay to not get the same "you are awesome" result everytime you do something. And I learnt that taking every thing to the ego route is probably the reason one feels that way so I just started an ego check. But again, thanks for you kind words man.
