This is literally what happened to me, in middle school I was picked on and now I’m almost finished with high school and it’s difficult to communicate with people a lot of the times. I have improved my self-esteem greately, it's not on top yet, but i have never felt so good about myself for so many years now, it feels great. But i have struggled with this issue, of being in performance mode when im meeting people in school or job. And i hate it. I want to relax and just be myself. So im starting with his advice: being curious and expressing myself. How you doing now bro?

Close your mind to yourself and whatever you're doing and open your mind to feel, hear and understand what the other person is saying. It's about being natural and not caring too much about the outcome. Knowing who you are so that it's up to the person to decide whether they like you or not but that doesn't matter because you like you.

Wow, I know this video is a few years old now but you literally put into words in a very simple way how I've been feeling for so many years now and wondering what could possibly be wrong with me! Especially the 'evaluating yourself' part - I do this ALL the time with friends or social situations and notice my voice even changes as I do it and then I feel like I have someones hands around my throat and my voice comes out all hoarse or strained :( Coming from a background of trauma and abuse I think my anxiety has stemmed from suppressed PTSD, however I'm tired of living in the past or making myself small. I really want to now take control of it and be the best version of myself I can be 🙂

I liked the breakdown of performance and connection mode, but I feel like I can use more tips on how to ease up and get to connection mode. Being curious about them and finding common grounds to express is a good way to maintain connection mode, but channeling the mind to not focus on performance mode is a different challenge that I don't think was addressed much.

I feel very aware of my movements, I feel myself under scrutiny of a 1000 and more eyes. It's interesting to know that I've been performing for my own brain. It's why I couldn't be natural, It's why I don't feel free. Great video. I think the problem with confidence can be summarized in - overthinking. Stop thinking and just do it. When in a situation that makes you overthink, just remember the Nike commercial, Just do it. Sounds a bit cheap, but it does help. It always helps, things are never as bas as we imagine they would be.

I agree with crater 777, you have to just do it. If you over think things you create scenarios in your mind that might not even exist. If you just do something and not overthink it, you find out the reality of the situation and deal with it either way.

Biggest problem I've had since getting into self help at 18 (I'm now 23) is that theres techniques and methods to make people laugh, build rapport etc. AKA theres right things to do and wrong things, so I'm constantly thinking of conversations as "interactions where I should be saying the 'correct' things" - like some sort of robot.
Just wish I could feel secure in myself in a room and interact organically and authentically, instead of thinking of the "right" things to say. Sometimes, I just want to "say" and nothing more

I struggle with telling stories, if I am telling a story people most of the time dont listen. It feels uninteresting what I have to say and I never know how to tell a story. My ex girlfriend asked me how I had been the last couple of months and I literally summoned the whole time in a few sentences and had nothing more to say and said it in the most boring way. I was freezing up the whole time with her. I can't ever think of stuff to say too, not just around her but most of the time. I don't know what to do, but this video feels like it could be the problem, so thank you very much Dr. Aziz

I do not meet anyone who is interested in me! I am always in connection mode because I am naturally curious about others but people never ask me about me. I met one guy who showed so much interest in me as a person and it really caught me off guard. I think I just need to be more expressive but a lot of people just show such disrespect when I am talking. They interrupt, their eyes glaze over etc.

I used to experience that crap when people interrupted me myself as well, so I decided to firmly finish my sentence even if they started talking in the middle of it, then I basically assumed that they had understood what I was saying.
They would usually be like "lolwut?" and then I calmly told them that they interrupted me and that I hadn't finished my sentence.
If I was unable to finish my sentence, then I just let them finish their sentence and then immediately said to them "can I finish my sentence, please?" with a slight tone of annoyance.

That is not an issue with yourself, it's the way the world is steering towards in this day and age. You're doing great if you're being honest and true to yourself. These days of social media driven selfies and filtered pictures, the world is looking for performance. Real people at face value are few and far between, but they are the ones who you'll connect with. I always believe that everyone has "real" deep down, they just need the confidence to let their true self outshine the fake wall that they've put up 🙂

I have had serious trust issues with people generally. Id rather have a chat to a homeless person than other people. But I found your short to the point video very useful. Ive met people who do all those behaviours and noticed their confidence and relaxed attitude. But again I think I did not trust either myself to be " convincing enough " or them to be willing to listen.
Many will have backgrounds of not experiencing really being accepted for who they are.
We are taught from little how to behave and shown what is expected of us. I will take from this video those suggestions of Connection and curiosity. A balance really. I used to focus 95% on the other. And bumble with word salad the other 5%. So thank you!

I would like to add that you should not program yourself to always agree with them or disagree with them if it's a discussion. You will gain their trust and respect alot more if if they say something and politely disagree. And also agreeing with them when you feel it's right and not over pleasing or over praising how right they are. Like you said, just be relaxed, connect and things should be ok. Keep it real and respectful and that does alot for someone.

cool and informative video. I watched it to the end to my own surprise cos it spoke to me about the pressure I face just trying to find out more about people that it comes off as an interview which most people don't like. but having something about yourself to share encourages the other person to see and trust the real you. you may think that you are making yourself vulnerable by revealing sensitive pasts, but that is the heart and soul of connection.

this is wrong on many levels! the younger generation seem to think that "not giving a shit" is the best way to be.
well its not. What if a man had a gunn aimed at your chest and he said "Man all i want is some love and a hug and love and someone to tell me its gonna be okay"
You can either choose to defend yourself OR you can really care and say hey man look life has its ways of getting to us but if you put the gun down and give me a hug maybe ill re think about calling the police and we can go grab drink at the pub or a meal..
If you care and listen to people and understand.. thats all that matters
      Caring is caring
If nobody gave a shit we would be in a world full of people doing drugs not giving a fk..
OH WAIT we already are like that! every kid these days seems to do drugs is messed up ..case closed.

I regard myself this way but it's a product of watching too many self help videos that has put me in this constant "performance" mode.
