Carbon Fiber Wingtips for the Bushplane!

  • Let's install the carbon fiber wingtips from Aerosport Products (not sponsored or affiliated) on the RANS S-21 Outbound homebuilt bushplane!
Benefits are that they are MUCH easier to install than the OEM ABS plastic wingtips, they're MUCH stronger, and they add 16 inches of additional trailing edge span per wing which reduces induced drag improving performance. (15% over the OEM tips). There's also a landing light option that deletes the leading edge spar cutout. I install the Aveo Powerburst NG Daylight 3-in-1 position / strobe light.

Just got my shipment from Aerosport today. Bought all they offer for the S-21.
Thanks for posting your progress. It’s been super useful for me to learn more as a I waited for my S-21 kit to arrive. My kit arrived 2 weeks ago. Started my build last week.

Hi Steve, again, great video and thanks for posting. I'm fitting my tips now and I have had the same experience as you did - these are really well made and fit well out of the box.

Geoff (Aerosport Products) is a good dude.. Known him for 25+ years.. His RV-10 is a masterpiece and I'm sure his S-21 is going to be as well.

IMO professionally you must haven some fighter pilot sized balls to me mixing epoxy on top of your lady’s granite kitchen bench top 😂

You get a pass talking about my balls since it’s kinda your job. And what my lady don’t know won’t hurt her. Shhhhhh 🤫

BTW I been working with Molex connectors for the beater part of 20 years. Still get mixed up. Hehehe. I don't know if you can or need to. One thing I do is when using Molex connectors in a mobile application. If I can. I use GripLockTies over the 2 connectors in between the wire to help keep them locked in place. Be for I found GripLockTies I would use a zip tie and rap it with electrical tape to prevent chafing. don't know if you need it. Maybe if not this will help someone along they way. Also nice to help support Mike Patey with his GripLockTies sells. They ROCK!!

Right on! Thanks for the great tip! I’ll definitely put in an order for the Patey ties. They look great. Cheers!

Just an idea but maybe epoxy the nuts in place for the lights on the wingtip and hopefully leave enough slack that you could replace the light without removing the wingtip. Although removing the access panel may work okay for connecting and disconnecting the wires in that event.

Nice job good video I did have to shim mine in a couple of places to confirm to my wing. It was easy just added a couple of strips of 6 oz. Carbon fiber cloth where it was needed. Aerosport rocks. I also have the air box

I love how you've included the family with the build. You're going to end up with a really nice plane with all those Aerosport parts.

Love seeing this detailed content. The last six weeks of stock market action may have set my timeline back a few years to get started - but let's hope for a better new year!
I have used Molex connectors in model airplanes and they were ok, but I can't help but compare them to what I see whenever I work on my cars. I think I will be researching automotive grade sealed connectors that are designed to last 5000 or more hours strapped to the side of a shaking engine when I get to that point.

Those are snazzy looking wingtips. Even if they don't add any aerodynamic performance...their groovyness produces coolness velocity...much more important. The extra trailing edge gives you at least 0.356 square inches of wing area. I will be shocked if that thing won't hover.
I don't know what your plan is for loose wiring but my ADHD/OCD can't handle random rattles. On vehicles, I have occasionally wrapped wires with that nifty split, tubular, insulating foam for household hot water pipes...to keep wires from knocking about and chaffing.
You are going to have one super groovy flying machine, me bucko. It's a pleasure watching it come together.

“Hover mode, engage.” All due to the snazzy tips! Thanks for the nice comment as always, hombre.
Good tip! I need to put some thought on how to secure the harness a little better in the tip. I love the pool floaty idea… 🤔

…kidding. But I do like the pipe insulation idea! I’ll look into it. Hope you’re staying warm this winter! It’s a wet one here in Bend.

@@CLEAREDDIRECT No worries. I survived a lot of these in my decades on this planet. (Not so many when I was on Zoltar, but that's another story) so I reckon I'll survive this one. I keep on promising, every year, that this one will be my final winter of snotcicles and frozen breath. Here's to keeping hope alive. HAPPY NEW YEAR, Steve, to you and the whole family.🥳🎉

Thanks for posting this video. I'm been hoping that someone would create a good video or write up of these tips and you've done it, much appreciated. I believe this information and fit up is enough to convince me to spend the money for the tips over fitting the stock Rans tips. Since I just completed the left wing the timing is perfect.

I've been waiting to see how the carbon fiber wing tips go together and fit. Thanks for the details. Also, was wondering if you have an update on the Titan engine I think you mentioned you were hoping to have show up in December.
