I would even change the front to the back left (when looking from the front view), because those smaller branches provide depth to the look of the tree, also the rootspread is nice and the trunk has a lot of character with that deadwood and two joining live veins.

So many beautiful angles on this tree, the front you picked is wonderful. I really like something in the 20:09 to 20:10 range as a front too! Gives kind of the impression of a mountain path going off into the distance.

I can’t begin to tell you Nigel how much I look forward to your videos as they are not only educational but inspiring. I think your apple tree looks beautiful and I’m excited to see updates on it. I began my journey into bonsai when the pandemic started. It’s with your videos and others and through several books that I have made it almost a year and a half with my trees which by the way all made their way to my home as nursery stock.

The thing to keep in mind with bonsai is that one is never truly finished there is only one word for a finished bonsai. Dead. Diebacks like that often require or suggest styling changes and choices one thing you might consider is to select a new front for the tree perhaps where the small amount of dead wood is visible between the two live veins. It's your tree and your choice. just something you might think about.

a really simple solution for deciduous material in general would be to just cut the branches down to the 3rd leaf on everything (the 1st one doesn't develop a new bud) and build ramification that way really fast (or in about 3-4 years it would be pretty much done). once the new branches come in just repeat the same process over and over

My grandson and I are studying "stratification" this year. It is going to be a big project; we are saving allour fruit seeds and pits, if they come off a tree that is, and we are collecting pine cones etc, as we find them.
I kinda hope I am going to have way too many seedlings for my own use by next year sometime. Which give me lots of time to ingratiate myself with a backyard owner..

I think the "new front" is really good, the pot then should be round and it'll help to balance the visual weight of the tree. Additionally I think the lowest leave on the branch growing in the front has the potential to develop as lowest branch. I would keep an eye on that.

The apple tree is quite unique with its deadwood and history, has it ever flowered and fruited for you before? Also is there no ladybugs in your area that will feed on aphids, I sometimes see ladybug larvae feasting on aphids in my garden.
