  • I've let my Ficus microcarpa grow all summer and it is ready to be pruned!
This tree was grown from a seed 29 years ago and was my very first bonsai.

I love ficus. These trees offer so many possibilities of creation

This ficus has really made progress with this trimming. It looks like many that I see in landscapes here in southeast Florida. I especially like the banyon root that is growing on your tree. Thanks so much for sharing your videos. Your manner of talking us through your decisions with your bonsai indicate to me (a retired teacher) that you are a great teacher. Know that you will get those structural problems with this pot resolved.

That first mature Ficus picture is down the road from me in the suburb of Northbridge in
    City of Perth

Always grateful for your videos and your love of mindfully working with trees.

I love the way you show inspirations/examples of your ideas for a tree via pictures of full size trees. It's very helpful to understand your vision for a tree, more clearly.

Sorry to hear about the structural problems in the pot. I thought I saw a slight bend in the middle at the start of the video but then I figured it must be from the camera. I hope you can reinforce it, the tree seems to be liking it a lot. :)

I have been waiting for this video since the repotting part just to see how will the moss complete the overall appearance and it's progressing nicely. Please put those four pillars back as soon as possible becouse they make this pot even more special. I think that this ficus has become my favourite tree from your collection :)

There’s an upright branch directly above that large aerial root on the right which is the same thickness and in my opinion distracts from the silhouette when viewed from the front. That tree has really come a long way. Keep growing. Thanks

It's so inspiring to see the progress on the very first tree you grew from a seed... I'm starting to plant my own seeds for new bonsai this year, and it really gives me a sense of hope for a future for my own trees!

Its very nice to see a ficus grow. They grow so fast, which really gives you a good look of its progress. Great video again nigel! Can’t wait for the next one. (:

The second reference photo you showed of a big ficus is from my home town! It's growing right outside the Santa Barbara train station and is thought to be the largest Ficus macrophylla in the US, it's been growing there since 1876. I've seen the tree a lot and I always wanted to climb it when I was little but couldn't since the whole area under the canopy line is chained off to protect the roots. Very cool to see a tree I've actually visited show up as inspiration for such a beautiful bonsai!

Fell off my chair when I saw you’d commented on Russell Brands channel 😍 Great comment too. It was the next vid I watched after this one. I love this tree but always thought the back looked more interesting. I might feel differently if I saw it in the flesh.

Beautiful ficus, growing it from a cutting must be fun. Just to enjoy al the developing stages. I have some cuttings going myself(dawn redwood and azalea), and hope to achieve something simulator in the next 10,20, … years.Always nice to hear your thoughts behind your handlings . Thanks 🙏🏻

@Nigel: Ever tried Walter Pall's method of just using a hedge pruner for general shape pruning? This seems to work quite well for naturalistic bonsai styles.

So regarding what you said about the front of the tree, do you make sure to place all your trees a certain way to catch the right sunlight? I’ve been rotating mine and now I’m wondering if I shouldn’t be.

The ficus has a very unique roots. Do you think some of the roots that are quite high on the trunk could be removed to created a more "natural tree"-like appearance?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think the truck will thicken and the roots will fuse and smooth out over time, it just needs more years!!
