- I'm working on creating an ancient looking orchard tree by slowly rebuilding the health of my Apple tree.
The weather is a bit better today for working on the greenhouse and I have a new gift from the TH-cam channel "Lets Do Bonsai"

One of the favourite features on this tree is the rotting part. It looks so natural to me in an apple tree! I love the old trees with holes in them, when I draw trees I always add a hole in the trunk, I've done that since I was a kid.
Always amazing to me that some plants can take tons of abuse and neglect and still keep trying to survive, while others turn up their toes and succumb even with the best of care and gentle treatment. Sort of like some people…..beautiful survivor tree. So much character!! 👍

I have a Bougainville with a hollow trunk. The roots of the main branches grew down inside the trunk and that’s all supporting the tree now. Very interesting effect on the age of the tree for sure.

It occurs to me that if you take the rectangular piece out again (I know...), then join the rectangular piece with the triangular piece before you place it back, you will be able to slot it up into that space. It will probably take 2 people, though.
Who would know that recovering from catastrophe would give you a better tree by many folds!

Nigel can I recommend trying a different pane of glass for the corner peices. It could be that one piece of triangular glass only fits in only one of the corners. There's like 4 of them right. See if one of the other pieces fits..
At this point I feel like you do two types of bonsai
1) the type that inspires me to try it and I do
2) the type that inspires me to try it and I haven't yet but fully intend to

Could it be that two of the panels are a tad shorter than the rest? This would mean measuring them all, but it may (hopefully) be the answer. Best of luck and well done so far. An admirable job!
Wow, it's really evident that your apple tree bonsai is starting to ramp up growth! Recovery has been a long road. I'm sure there's a lot of satisfaction your getting from working with it right now.

It's so relaxing watching your videos. I have an apple tree and it's never proceduced any apples. I recently learned that I need at least 2 apple trees in order to have fruits. I don't have space for another potentially large tree, so I'm thinking about turning it into a bonsai. :)

The moss on your apple tree looks beautiful. I’ve noticed in watching your videos that a lot of your trees if not all have a beautiful covering of moss on them. Would you consider doing a video teaching us newcomers how to correctly grow moss on our trees and nurture it through the growing season.

Nice vid on the apple tree. I noticed when you showed your Haws water spouts that the medium had one hole not quite punched out. Its on the second row from the outside at about 10 o'clock. There may be another on the outer row between 1 and 2 o'clock. I'm thinking if you care you can always drill them out. Not a big deal but if your hanging onto them for 20 years.
I wonder: when you are working but not filming, do you talk to yourself? When I used to shop with small children, I would chat away about what we were getting and what we would use it for. It took quite some time after they were at school before I could shop without missing the chat! I often talk to my self when I am gardening, but I cant be sure if it is out loud, or just in my head!
I mostly whistle while I work!

Hi Nigel , you can cement that hole where is that rooten wood and in time will heal over it with living tissue if you just leve it like that you will wait so long time that you may not see that in your life time. But BTW nice tree Nigel.

I think I have the smaller Haws can. I’ve always liked the fact that the bulk of the can is at the back and it makes for easier watering if the level of water in your bucket is low. I haven’t really found the rosettes help me personally, however I do just tend to water the soil and not the canopy. I rather prefer to use this for watering with speed and precision. I do find using the rosettes a bit slow, plus I do sometimes end up with a clog anyway.
The apple tree is looking really good, lots of characters with the rotting. Hopefully you solve that window mystery, maybe it's the wrong piece of glass?
Aussie Dave here Nigel, I was wondering if you could air laying those branches before cutting off those branches so you could get multiple cuttings 🤔

For the greenhouse problem: could you maybe dismantle the sloping beam o loosen it just enough to slide in the sheet of glass?
I'm worried that the glass would then break from the contact with the roof? I'll leave that piece until the end and maybe get a special piece made.
@@TheBonsaiZone I understand, I thought the problem was just that it doesn't go in because of the lip/margin of that beam.
You could take the piece of glass to be cut. It could be special greenhouse glass which is hardened to survive in hail storms.

Did you plan to leave and preserve some of the deadwood? I think it gives the tree its own charm. I was lucky to buy a Conservatory Can a couple of years ago while they were still on sale. This year it spray rose connection is broken (his is their weak point), but I was able to fix it with epoxy resin and sewing thread :). Although their website still sells the original plastic rose spray (with brass insert). Now I found out that full-brass rose is also work well, thank you.
Alas it is quite white, you could stop the rotting with calcium-polysulfide, which is easily made at home by cooking slaked lime and sulfur (outside, because this produces quite nasty odors!). Maybe add some copper-sulfate to inhibit fungi even more, not that this marvelous bonsai becomes infested by some fungus species that thrives on live wood.
As I was looking at the lower pane of glass, it looked like it was sitting too high. I would think that it would only cover about half of the metal support piece, and that the triangular pane would cover the upper half. Is there any way that the lower pane of glass might not be seated at the lowest level? As always, really enjoying the bonsai as well as seeing the other things that you are doing! Good luck with that glass!
The bottom glass piece just above where the triangle glass piece fits looks like it’s abit too high. The edge of the glass is above that metal cross bar, the other side looks lower than the side that doesn’t fit. Maybe reposition the bottom rectangle piece?
I’m just wondering Nigel if you checked the first piece of angled glass that you installed previously against the one that doesn’t fit and swap them. It’s probably a long shot but you never know 🤷🏻♂️
I did check them to see if they are all the same and they were! I've loosened everything and I'll try and come up with a solution today!
Great character and very old and ancient looking indeed. Is there a clear dead wood preservative that could be used to slow down the decay?

Hi Nigel are you familiar with the tree Lagunaria patersonia ( the Norfolk Island Hibiscus). It is in the Malvaceae family, native to Norfolk Island off the east coast of Australia and you can get it to flower in 18 months from seed. Iam in Australia and have managed to get mine to flower from seed, from a seed that I collected from Norfolk island hibiscus trees that are street trees in my local area.

I was wondering how you use the fine particles of perlite that remain after sifting?Put in the garden or throw it?I put mine in the garden plants(In their pots)
I was wondering if you took out the bottom pain and put in the triangular pain in first, would that help getting the top in? Maybe the bottom pain to big for that part and that is the reason the triangle glass does not go into place. Just a thought.
I tried that Tom! It just doesn't fit for some reason, I checked the squareness of the structure, checked all the parts were assembled right, I'm just short about an 1/8 of an inch! I'll tackle it today and see what I can do. Thanks Tom!
@@TheBonsaiZone Do you think it could be from the other side? You have 2 triangles on the back of the greenhouse. Just a thought. You might have tried that already. Is it possible to raise the strut in that one corner?

I don't mean to speak for Nigel with regard for what he will do. But while lime sulphur does act to preserve wood. It is not normally used on deciduous trees. Deciduous trees are often allowed to rot and preserved with wood hardener. The rotted parts are also often painted or stained black.
Nigel, I like your move to filming in the greenhouse, is a much better setup. But, you still need a backdrop. It makes it hard to see what you are doing with the foliage in the foreground and that outside the greenhouse in the background.
On the glass issue, I assume you have checked all your pieces and made sure you didn’t mix them up?
