4Runner vs LC vs Lexus? If you are male and want a tough "I'm an off roader" get the 4Runner. If you are soccer mom looking for a status badge, get the Lexus. If you are a male over 40 and want an adult vehicle daily driver with a little throw back and capability, get the LC. The LC splits the difference. The Lexus can go off road, but that grill and all the rest, it's about luxury. But the LC says luxury that can get dirty. I hear what you say about cost comparison. You are correct. I bought an LC and dumped a Rubicon because I wanted ride and mileage but still wanted capability. 4Runner is a younger persons vehicle. This is, of course, just my opinion. Get what calls to you.
Not a bad breakdown. I think the GX looks the best and generally aligns with all demographics if price wasn’t the barrier. They should have made the Land Cruiser what the FJ Cruiser would have been if they continued with that rebirth.
I’ve owned a 4Runner in the past and during a career change it supported me as I drove it 30,000 miles per year. For the 100,000 miles I drove it, the truck depreciated only 3,000 dollars and all it needed was brakes. After the 4Runner started to rust :-( I bought a bronco SASQUATCH 4d 4cyl and it was a great truck but I couldn’t get behind the convertible thing. It was loud at highway speed and overall bad for anything but short trips. It was however super amazing off road and really good looking and really well designed with an amazing engine and transmission. Yes the Bronco has an amazing drivetrain. To replace the Bronco I wanted a Land Cruiser until I saw how they looked and then saw how much they cost so I ordered a next gen 4Runner. I wanted a TRD off-road. Last week my 4Runner allocation came in. 4cyl TRD off-road premium and it was 59,000! For 57,000 I could buy a Land Cruiser with the hybrid and the locker and just not have stupid options like fake leather and a big screen. For 57k you get a real off-roader in the Land Cruiser. If you want the locker in the 4Runner you’re gonna have to get a TRD off-road and pay 50 grand for it. If you want the locker in the GX expect to pay north of 75k. So the 1958 Land Cruiser you’re getting the parts that really matter. The powerful drive train with good mpg and you’re getting the locking rear differential standard. That’s why I bought the Land Cruiser 1958. I love the truck but it was expensive and it’s not perfect. It’s basically a really nice and quiet 4Runner with different styling and some really high end features with Lexus Japanese build quality mixed with fabric seats that aren’t powered. In that respect I love it. I love that it’s a pretty spartan vehicle but it’s also super smooth and luxurious where it counts. Comfort and poise and capability and practicality. I don’t like the exhaust note. It’s 4cyl doesn’t sound bad BUT the exhaust sounds sporty which I don’t like. In time like any car I will grow to love more about it. In time all the haters who say these things are too expensive will be extremely happy to buy these things third hand when they have 225,000 miles on them and the average joe can afford it. Toyota has smartly decided to take one vehicle and sell it under three model names with really three unique drivetrains and three somewhat less unique exteriors. That’s OK! It’s what General Motors did for 80 years. But in this respect with how popular SUVs are they wanted a range of options and features so a buyer could get what they wanted at a price that made sense to them.
@@crooney82 I actually like the more simple things in the 1958 LC, but it would be nice to be able to have leather as an option without having to go up to the next trim level. To me that's a bit shady. Makes me wonder if it would be worth finding a shop that does custom work and get leather that way...
The LC LC with premium package with All terrain 33" tires on 18" wheels for 70k. It is the one to get if you want maximum offroading AND maximum luxury with the best fuel economy while keeping it feeling rugged. The Lexus style is a little more refined and less rugged. More for on road use and not as good offroading as the LC. You pick the LC if you want to go anywhere while you enjoying a bit of comfort inside.
I like the LC's design better than the Lexus which I find ugly. Despite their similarities, they each have their own niche...the Lexus is all luxury, the LC is a little luxury and heritage and the 4Runner is mainly off road.
@@nateroberts8556 I would generally agarre although the offroading capabilities between the 4runner and the LC are very close. The 4runner I believe edges in having an extra inche of approach and departure angeles, but the LC has a better breakover angle if I read correctly. The 4runner offers it at a lower price point. I Will be interested to see how the different trims compare at different price points.
For $75k on the GX you DON'T get: Memory seats, Real Leather, or 3 Zone HVAC. Objectively, the LC is the better deal IMO. Memory seats should be standard on every single vehicle from a 'luxury' brand, IMO
One of the reasons why I like your channel is because you usually talk about the driver assist in the cars you review. How is the driver assist in this land cruiser. Can I drive itself on the highway.? Does it stay centered on the road?
Nailed it. GX and LC are so closely priced it doesn't make sense to go LC. Although if the first edition had the v6 I'd buy it over the gx everytime because I think the Round Headlight front will be timeless and a classic design.
The problem is you can’t really find Lexus GX’s, and when you do they’re either fully spec’d trims (around $75k-$80k) and/or have huge markups. If Toyota was pumping out entry level GX’s like they are with the LC it’d be a more difficult choice for sure.
I love the look of the Land Cruiser more than the new 4Runner, but I have two big gripes: 1. The Land Cruiser requiring premium fuel - that is another reason the GX starts to look more attractive and 2. The inability to get leather without jumping up to the "LandCruiser" trim level, but then I lose the round headlights which I prefer over the rectangular ones. Another more minor gripe is the small fuel tank at only 17.7 GAL, I am hearing people struggle to get 300 miles of range, but I can deal with that. So, I'm looking more closely at the new 4Runner because it stands out more as it doesn't have a Lexus sibling, doesn't require premium, and is a bit cheaper. We will see. Maybe a test drive will be what puts me over the edge for one over the other.
I will get the LandCruiser for these reasons - engine very refined..better looking than the 4runner IMO. the name plate for resale in the future..love the 1958 version that what toyota LC was about in the past ..smaller engines and bear bones
I think if a LC no premium package can be gotten with a “good deal” (below msrp) then it’s worth it for the better fuel economy, approach angle, and tactile buttons, and some other aesthetic interior differences I prefer like brown seats. But if you’re approaching the 70k mark GX all the way.
Shopping all right now. It is certainly a confusing segment at the moment. Things that give me a lot of the pause at the moment are the lines are not distinct and not fully fleshed out / distinct (I.e., no hybrid GX yet, 4Runner not on lots, Tacoma has some weird drawbacks, LC is the same price as the GX). Really just looking for rugged reliability with some creature comforts that aren’t going to break the bank
Just got the new Land Cruiser Land Cruiser…got it cause I have had 8 4 runners…needed a change..and Toyota tends to not change the 4 runner but every ten years
I think the styling, nameplate, hybrid only drivetrain sets it apart from the siblings. Not interested in the GX because of poor mpg, lack of availability (they’re not easy to find period, especially @
I could have got either overtrail plus or first edition , I chose first edition, I like the looks better, simpler I guess, for me I think I made the right choice
Not one single instrumented test has achieved 6.6 seconds 0-60MPH with the new Land Cruiser. It’s an 8.2-8.5 second 0-60 slug. Wish it actually had a real engine.
You’re paying a premium for the nameplate but also the hybrid drivetrain. They are very capable SUVs but I think the 1958 should start @ $50k. With the LC trim starting @ $56k and around $61k with the Premium package.
I agree. Toyota should drop the price on the base model. The seats are manual not powered and a lot of plastic on the doors. Etc. they are great cars but I think overpriced.
Meh. I'll keep driving my 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and LOL as I pass by these wannabee offroaders. This thing has the same ground clearance as my minivan and worse approach angle than a Ferrari.
Yes, a Wrangler Rubicon is a significantly more capable vehicle offroad, there's no comparison. But, this will handle much better and be much more comfortable on the road. And no, it is significantly more capable than a mini van off-road, and your Ferrari comment is wrong and in bad taste. If offroad capability is the most important part of your vehicle at the expense of on-road comfort, then you made the right choice. If you see someone driving this new Land Cruiser down the road and want to "laugh" at them from your Rubicon, then you should consider why you care so much about what works for other people and why you let what other people spend their money on get under your skin. Different strokes for different folks.

Too barebones for the price. Should have been around 45-50k

New 4Runner is so ugly that it’s a dealbreaker.
I like new 4Runner
I think Toyota need to put more choices for colors. The base model only three colors is disappointing.

Jeep first revealed the Recon, a mid-size, battery electric SUV, in September 2022.

A new Nissan XTERRA! Wait, made by Toyota???? Must share a designer. I'm out!
The base model is overpriced for what you would get. You are really purchasing it for the name. Take away the name and you are looking at a 45K SUV.
You’re paying a premium for the nameplate but also the hybrid drivetrain.
