As I mentioned in a previous comment, I'm a photographer that (out of necessity) has gotten into the world of videography. The FX30, and your clear, concise, videos have made that transition, not only possible but quite enjoyable. Looks like I may have a project that will REQUIRE a "B" camera ......... another FX30, perhaps?.?.?.? Thanks again Kofi for your continued advice, guidance and the helpful, informative content. I'll be 64 years old next month, AND I wanna be just like you when I grow up. LOL!
Absolutely. I picked one up about eight months ago, and while I haven’t had as much time to film as I’d like, the time that I have had proves this thing to be a BEAST.
The FX30 just makes so much sense for me in terms of workflow. It’d be nice to have the 12,800 ISO of the FX3 and an uncropped better 4K120p, but I realized to myself I NEVER SHOOT at those settings. I’m always lighting my shoots properly and this just makes sense. As for 120p, I think I’ve moved past that stage in my career where I rarely use super slow motion. Been really loving this lil camera.
The amount of times I've shot in 100FPS+ on my full frame Sony and actually slowed it down x4 is super rare, majority of the time I slow it by 50% so the 4k60 on this is more than enough.
Love my FX30. Many props to you for providing the best content on it out here with no bias opinion. Use mine as my main camera and it’s been great with BTS and documentary film work.
It’s funny we always say “crop sensor” or “crop factor.” Hollywood used S35 in film cameras and the original digital cinema cameras. FF is a new thing. Hey it’s a great tool. But I feel like we forget that the standard has been S35 for ever. So while the new standard is FF, that is a new development recently. S35 is the FOV in all of the classic movies. This being said, obviously FF and 12,500 iso is killer.
Idk if anyone forgot but just full frame cameras that do video are so widely accessible that it’s easier to make the comparison than over complicate, the USA is a newer country, but things are often compared to the US dollar, same kinda thing
Nice to see you giving this camera it's fair do's. There's definitely benefits to shooting super 35 (this has always been the standard for film, after all). If people can't get a pro level image out of this camera, then I think they need to go and reevaluate their filming techniques. This is a much more professional camera than it was marketed as.
Yes you actually do need 12,800 when you stop your lens down. For green screen we need to use a lower aperature to get the image a sharp as possible (f/5.6) so you can get a clean green screen key. While at normal lighting, ISO 2500 works well for f/5.6, but there is more noise in the shadows, which really matters for green screen keying. An A7C MK1 has 3200 base ISO, so that would work better for green screen, but there is no 10-bit 420 on the HDMI 😞. I was stoked about the FX30 until I found out that it's center cropped when recording 4K HDR via the HDMI. It's a 6K sensor center cropped, so it crops in about 25%. OUCH! I was hoping to use the Sony 10-20mm f/4 OSS G lens but that ruins it.
I ended up going with the FX3 for my purposes. I wanted the low light performance of full frame really badly so I ended up splurging for the extra. I will say, while I really love my camera and plan on keeping it and using it for many years to come, I don't know how much better the FX3 would have been than the FX30. The only con really seems to be the low light performance, for almost half the price. Definitely a killer deal, but I think this camera and the FX3 will go down as the two best cameras for videographers (while still being relatively inexpensive).
Thank you i really appreciate this breakdown. I run a mental health and wellness channel and I was thinking about upgrading my equipment & this was a camera I am interested in. So perfect timing.
I bought two TT Artisan lenses (17mm and 35mm) f/1.4. I use this as my main cam for client jobs. I don't have low lighting issues shooting with those lenses. I don't think this is just a camera for beginners. I've been a videographer for nearly 10 years and love this camera. I'm using it now on my mini doc projects for clients.
hi, are you shooting with a stabilizer? As for me, I agree with the author in everything, it has low sensitivity, noise comes out at 2500 ISO, it doesn’t have a working 120 frames, it doesn’t have a working matrix stabilizer, the rest is all the same same 6600
I am getting FX-30 as my first cinema line camera.. can’t wait to get started. I have been using Fujifilm XT4 for a while now and its really exciting to move to Sony!
Whileni do wish i had the low light capabilities of the fx3, this camera actually handles lowlight pretty well at its higher base iso. And coming from a canon 90d which is only four years younger, the advancements that have been made in apsc/super 35 sensore in terms of low light are mind blowing. Just shot a ahort film on mine and it handled some super underexposed scenes very well
I already have an A7iv so the Fx30 is a no brainer for me as a second camera angle. Thought about the A6700 in it's place but the overheating issue shouldn't be understated with that camera
You’re a real one! I have been debating for a YEAR which camera to upgrade my a6000 from, the A7IV or FX 30. And after a lot of research, deciding i don’t want over heating issues and your well documented use, Im going to go with the FX 30! Wondering if you’ve ever bought cameras on a Black Friday deal / if you’ve ever bought one off ebay? I’m seeing the FX 30 for $200 off on B&H, but I’m thinking of holding out until Black Friday to see if it drops lower.
I'd love to get my hands on the FX3, but the price is a bit too much to justify for the personal work that I do (it's nearly $6k AUD). The FX30 looks like a great option for me and I've seen some great looking images from the camera. I totally agree with you in regards to shutter angle, it would be great to see it added in a future firmware update. I use it all the time on the Sony FS5, super handy when changing frame rates.
@@nickkyriakidis I just had a look at the variable shutter option. It’s great if you want to get a 1/48 shutter speed at 24fps. Also great for removing unwanted flicker in certain lights and LED displays. It’s still an implementation of shutter speed rather than shutter angle though. I use shutter angle a lot as I tend to switch frame rates during my shoots. Setting my shutter angle to 180 degrees and not having to manually change the shutter speed manually every time I switch frame rates is really nice.
I wish they would have made it Dual ISO with at least 3200 like the A7IV or even 6400 to really make it sit between the A7iV and FX3. 3200 ISO can even be short sometimes.
I shoot corporate video. I own an FX-6 (A Cam) and an FX-3 (B-Cam). I just ordered the FX-30 as my C Cam. When you are on a job in which the client is depending on you, you can never have too much backup. If something should go wrong with a camera a Pro needs to be able to pivot. I’ve seen jobs (signed contract, thousands paid) where a camera happens to drop from a bag or malfunctions at the worst time, etc in which the production had to stop. Why? because there were no other cameras as backup. The client is very upset (understandably so) because they expect a professional to have a backup plan just in case anything should happen. My mentor advised me of this: “you should not be in business charging people money if you don’t have a second camera body ready to go to in the event of an emergency. If you cannot afford two…then you cannot afford one”
Good point on Shutter Angle. Panasonic is the only camera maker that has had shutter angle in virtually all of their models. At least Sony gave us 1/48 in the meantime. But, unless we can do this for all frame rates like 60fps, 120fps, it just becomes frustrating. If Panasonic can do it, Sony can do it. I think the claims of "micro four thirds is dead" and "crop sensors are dead" are stupid assertions by people who don't even work in film or video. I shot a feature film with the GH5, and it was quite popular at every film festival it appeared in. It won "Audience Favorite" at the Palm Springs Film Festival in 2019. That's pretty good for a movie shot with a micro four thirds sensor.
The sensor wars i gues s made some sense in like 2017 when there was just more technology in the full frame cameras outside of the sensors, but now you have cameras where they’re so close the only difference is sensor size which isn’t even a deal breaker anymore
@@KofiYeboah Better dynamic range comes into play. But, if you use lighting and proper planning, you can overcome the perceived shortcomings and limitations.
I still have an old sony fs100 and it had a firmware update a year after it launched and guess what where one of the new features? Yes, shutter angle. So if they could do it 10 years ago there shouldn't be any reason they can't do it today, Other than they are more interested in you not using generic batteries than giving more useful features (update v3.0)
*I LOVE My FX30 as I switched from the a6400 and I bought it mainly because it's more of a Video then Hybrid. It's amazing what it can Do and I just bought my First Cine lens the SLR Magic and it's a Lovely pair just bout a Kit lens which should be interesting as I only have the 16mm sigma and 11mm Sony. So this works for me and Don't plan on selling it*
I have the option to choose between the ZV-E1 with the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 or the FX30 with the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and either the Sigma 16mm f1.4 or the Viltrox 13mm f1.4. Since I’m just starting my career as a videographer and plan to shoot music videos and social media content, which setup would you recommend? Thanks !!!
Loving my FX30 so far, would you ever consider making videos on ND filters for shooting outside, or even a video on Tiffen BPM/glimmerglass, and what they could achieve?
This is really a great video about the FX30. I am a full frame shooter, but for the price may be I will buy one or two of them. On weddings I am filming with prime lenses, so I rarely shoot with more then 2000 ISO. So ISO 800 and 2500 would be perfect for me. Shooting with ISO 12800 I would need a ND filter.
I used my canon r6 with a 35mm prime for over a year for my professional jobs. Great camera with c-log 3 but for certain jobs it would overheat in 4K which would force me to shoot in 1080p. Anyways I knew I needed to switch to Sony and I got the fx30! I absolutely love this camera it’s amazing! And considering the body and lens combo is $900 cheaper than my canon option it still has superior video features and quality! I love s-log 3 and I don’t have issues with low light. Anyways my point here is that Sony is superior in terms of videos no comp and I hope I can make enough money to afford the fx3 mii or whatever it will be called when it comes out!
I am poor man and the fx30 was in my budget and it never misses! If I had more money then yes the fx3 would have been my choice. That low light performance! Yes, I have found myself in shoots where we lost the sun, and shooting in the dark was a struggle.
I appreciate your slo mo sentiment. I think it is used way too much these days. Time and place but when I see clip after clip in a timeline, everyone in 120, it just bores me as a viewer. FX30 is a great cam though, love mine for client work and social media projects. Great vid!
great camera. the one big downside is the noisy 4k 120 fps and the crop it gets you. it could be also an advantage if u shoot sport videos but man it quite bothersome. would you combine 4k 60 fps and 1080p 120 fps ?
I just bought an fx30 used through LensRentals! It was a great price, but I wasn't sure on which lens to purchase. I was renting a Sigma Art 24-70mm, but I was concerned the 24mm (pre crop) would not deliver on some tight filming situations I find myself in. I went with a Tamron 17-70mm, but are there any other options in the 1k range you would recommend?
@@KofiYeboah yeah, but I also have to accept the firmware update that took away battery power display for non-Sony batteries. Might not be a deal breaker, but I'm still 1 update behind.
Also for anyone who is looking to get an FX30, B&H has a $200 mail in rebate on them right now. Not sure if other companies are offering the same deal but $1598 on that camera is a freaking steal!!!
I currently have an A6400 and want to upgrade, I just purchased the Sirui Saturn full frame and have been looking at the FX30 or FX3, for music videos. If im shooting all Anamorphic are those good choices? Or is it worth switching to something like S5iiX for the opengate? Is opengate alone worth the switch or can I stay with sony shorting Anamorphic?
I've used it as a B Camera and not an A, so the times I have used it is all the videos on the channel on the FX30, theres a few crossfit videos on IG I've done on it and I THINK the page name is @Elementcomps, all of their event footage I did on the FX30 with the 20mm !

Would you recommend the FX30 for a beginner with no experience with no cameras experience or editing for the first camera or is it easier to use the A7iv ?

@@KofiYeboah do you think fx30 as B cam to s5iix makes sense, despite different color science? Or do you have a different recommendation? I want to spend no more than 2k on camera body - was also considering fujifilm xh2
Yes I really need 12,800 iso hahaha but not always because of late night shooting... No one seems to comprehend the benefit of having such a high iso when shooting 60fps or 120fps indoors or in less than sunlight situations. People seem to really forget how much more light you need when you start slowing things down... Especially with the HD 240fps which is incredible now with Davinci Resolve's super scaling feature to upscale the footage to 4k! But I'd imagine most people who actually use/need high iso performance understand the why/how so they probably aren't considering an FX30 in the first place! Personally I shoot with the a1 and a7SIII and find having the range of native iso values between the two cameras to literally cover every scenario I come across! Now I just need to pick up a Komodo X and my setup will be complete hahaha
That was kinda the point ! If you need it , the fx30 isn’t for you, and if you’re not usually shooting at night in an an uncontrolled space, then maybe looking at something else
@@KofiYeboah I got the point, I know the FX30 isn't for me, I just enjoy watching your videos man! Most people only think of using 12,800 iso for night shooting and simply write it off because "I don't shoot at night I don't need it" but then like you mentioned with the performance of the FX30 in 120fps they'll shoot in 120 on a camera like this only to be disappointed in or find there isn't enough clean iso after the fact.
I have been loving my FX 30 - and yes - I wonder who actually ever needs an ISO of 12,800?? Interestingly the FX30 might have actually been a better choice in some ways for the Creator- they did an IMAX blowup which might have looked better (it's been criticized as being a bit 'soft') with the FX30 being a down-sampled 6K image!
Wedding photographers for sure. It can also be more of a subject matter thing. I personally prefer the look of dark, moody settings, such as with night cityscape, so the FX3 would be a better match.
I just traveled through Italy with my FX 30 - lots of ND filter use- but only a few times- even in the evening- when I needed more than a 2500 ISO - but I am not a wedding shooter so I don't know how dark people make their venues... @@austinnh8297
Hey friend, I own a A7 III (not the S one), and I want to upgrade, the thing is I only have a Sigma Art lens 24-70mm. How do you think the crop factor will impact my workflow?
I'm interested in a camera that shoot's 4k in 120fps as I shoot a lot of slow motion footage and after research I've stumbled across the FX30. However, I see that you do not recommend this camera for that style of footage, is there any good cameras you can recommend me for shooting in 4k at 120fps? thanks !
Is it me or i'm i the only one that thinks that slog 3 is a pain and more work to get out a finished video project. I also think if you look at all the sample videos from the Sony fx3 and fx30 are dark.
Great content Kofi, new subscriber here. I shot a lot inside scientific labs, a lot of white! I shoot with FX3 and I'm looking for a trusty B-Cam to pair with. In your experience have you had any issues colour matching with an FX3? Up until now I always considered finding a second hand A7SIII or FX3 as the B Cam..
@@KofiYeboah, the Sony FX30 is OK for stills but not excellent. The rolling shutter is pretty bad in some situations. That's why I chose the Fuji X-H2s with a stacked sensor because it's an actual hybrid APSC camera. For me, Sony has only one significant advantage - AF. Anyway, the FX30 is a good video camera, but not for me.
This along with FX3 will go down in history as one of the best cameras ever made.

So this works for me and Don't plan on selling it*
That’s dope! Glad you enjoy it 👊🏾
Man, hello from Russia! Thank you for helping me choose a camera. You have amazing charisma and video quality!
Oh thank you! I appreciate you 😁
I have the option to choose between the ZV-E1 with the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 or the FX30 with the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and either the Sigma 16mm f1.4 or the Viltrox 13mm f1.4. Since I’m just starting my career as a videographer and plan to shoot music videos and social media content, which setup would you recommend?
Thanks !!!
Hey any one with one of these shoot with a 28mm lens? I heard this was a favorite of so many legendary filmmakers back in the S35 film days.
Loving my FX30 so far, would you ever consider making videos on ND filters for shooting outside, or even a video on Tiffen BPM/glimmerglass, and what they could achieve?
Possibly !
That’s true ! I hope whatever you choose, you enjoy it !
yes, Sony please give us shutter angle on the FX30!!!
One can dream ahau
Kofi...a great summary....and such high quality as you always deliver...thanks!
Thank you so much!
Who ever cared what brush Picasso used to paint his pictures? - Great Video again!
Thank you !!
Great job on the video Kofi! Thanks for making it.
Thank you !
Glad it worked out for you 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Just picked up an FX30 on B&H, just waiting on my SD card to arrive now (:
Congratulations! Enjoy !
im using it all the way. Great for doc, weddings and just simple movies! : )
That’s excellent
I am poor man and the fx30 was in my budget and it never misses! If I had more money then yes the fx3 would have been my choice. That low light performance! Yes, I have found myself in shoots where we lost the sun, and shooting in the dark was a struggle.
I try to use super fast lenses when I can, but it can’t be perfect 😅
I appreciate your slo mo sentiment. I think it is used way too much these days. Time and place but when I see clip after clip in a timeline, everyone in 120, it just bores me as a viewer. FX30 is a great cam though, love mine for client work and social media projects. Great vid!
Thanks !!
Great video. Needing a third angle for my video podcast to go with FX6/A7S3 and really torn between the FX30 and the A7Cii… any thoughts?
Absolutely love this camera! Your videos are amazing
Thank you !
great camera. the one big downside is the noisy 4k 120 fps and the crop it gets you. it could be also an advantage if u shoot sport videos but man it quite bothersome.
would you combine 4k 60 fps and 1080p 120 fps ?
You could! I don’t use 120 much tbh
Would love to see a fx35, Global Shutter 26mp Apsc
One can dream!
The photos of the girl at the gym are epic! Well done sir!
Thanks!!
Shutter angle. Preach!
Soon!
The website says “Instant Savings”. Confirmed in the checkout process too. Even better 🙌
That’s an UNREAL deal
Students get it cheaper on Adorama. 1528.00 plus tax 1673.49. Good deal
I agree! Great video
Thanks!
Do you have link of project you made with the 20mm 1.8 ? Very interested of this combo
I've used it as a B Camera and not an A, so the times I have used it is all the videos on the channel on the FX30, theres a few crossfit videos on IG I've done on it and I THINK the page name is @Elementcomps, all of their event footage I did on the FX30 with the 20mm !
@@KofiYeboah thank you so much I’ll check that !
Great content. From South Africa
Thanks !
I was looking at getting this but I’m being pulled to Panasonic sx5iix. Have you ever used it?
I have , both are great!
Confiar no EV? É uma dúvida que tenho se poder me responder agradeço... Abraço
Would you recommend the FX30 for a beginner with no experience with no cameras experience or editing for the first camera or is it easier to use the A7iv ?
Both are kinda the same imho, long as you’re investing in learning
Hey Kofi, I also own the fx30. Do you use slog3 in lowlight at 2500 iso and do you also overexpose it 1.7? Grtz Arthur
Yes to the first one, check my Cine ei videos for the second
@@KofiYeboah Thank you! I'm just starting to work with slog coming from A7iii 8-bit, I'm gonna check your Cine ei vid. Grtz from the Netherlands
fx30 photography flashlight is working
@KofiYeboah Footage is incredible, Bro!!! Thanks for the 1 year update on the FX30 👍🏾
More to come!
@@KofiYeboah Sounds great! Looking forward to it 🙏🏾
Is this an ideal first camera, i understand there are cheaper beginner cameras like the sony 6400 but if this camera is that good i may aswell just get this and keep it for longer. I film aesthetic vlog style videos. I appreciate any help.
I can’t tell you what to buy, I can only give you the information to make your own decisions my guy
Thanks again for the video! Anyone recommend a great speed booster for the FX30?
Crazy that fx3 doesn't have variable shutter when fx30 that cost almost half has.
Maybe in a firmware update? Or no who knows lol
I appreciate the review I’m definitely gonna get one. But I still don’t get this trend of people holding lav mics 😂 it’s so weird to me
Ah at this point it’s TH-cam , anything goes
S5 video looks great here
It’s a great camera !
If Sony keeps treating the a7S III like a redheaded stepchild, I'm going with an FX30 as B-cam to my FX6.
😂😂 nothing wrong with ginger step kids!
This camera vs lumix s5iix for camera to be used as a content creation camera for instagram, youtube, and occasional photos?
Lumix I think has more photo features but not great on the autofocus department
Fx30 is awesome, but I still don’t think anything beats the a7iv in its price range!!
Tbf it is 500-700 more so I’d hope so😁
@@KofiYeboah no kidding dude, really for those who want to expand on the photography side of things.
Since you own the S5ii, what situations are you reaching for the panasonic over the fx30? Been thinking of getting the fx30 as a b cam to my s5ii.
I had it as a loaner, I actually only used it when I needed to use open gate and that was about it 😅
@@KofiYeboah do you think fx30 as B cam to s5iix makes sense, despite different color science?
Holding a lav mic doesn't bother me nearly as much as people holding a large diaphragm condenser mic in their hands.
both to me are kinda funny ahha
you didn't put your playlist up in the corner like you said in the last 10 seconds...
Check again 👍🏾
I have been loving my FX 30 - and yes - I wonder who actually ever needs an ISO of 12,800?? Interestingly the FX30 might have actually been a better choice in some ways for the Creator- they did an IMAX blowup which might have looked better (it's been criticized as being a bit 'soft') with the FX30 being a down-sampled 6K image!
Maybe ! I think it looked excellent ! Check out the podcasts he’s been on either way I loved ut
The field of view would multiply about 1.5 times , you’re looking at a 35 to 105 technically 👍🏾
Saw the creator, other than some noise in some scenes, no one could tell that movie was shot on a $4000 camera.
It wasn’t , it was shot on an $80 million dollar budget with the best post production house in the world haha
I'm interested in a camera that shoot's 4k in 120fps as I shoot a lot of slow motion footage and after research I've stumbled across the FX30. However, I see that you do not recommend this camera for that style of footage, is there any good cameras you can recommend me for shooting in 4k at 120fps? thanks !
theres tons ! got a ton of videos on the channel!
Bro Fii what lenses and filters did you use on your fx30 during the shooting?
Tons of videos on the channel about that👍🏾
Do you guys know what is the crop form factor of FX30 When [SteadyShot] is set to [Active] ?
I think it’s ~5% give or take
Is it me or i'm i the only one that thinks that slog 3 is a pain and more work to get out a finished video project. I also think if you look at all the sample videos from the Sony fx3 and fx30 are dark.
There’s tons of tutorials to learn👍🏾
Great content Kofi, new subscriber here. I shot a lot inside scientific labs, a lot of white! I shoot with FX3 and I'm looking for a trusty B-Cam to pair with. In your experience have you had any issues colour matching with an FX3? Up until now I always considered finding a second hand A7SIII or FX3 as the B Cam..
The best b cam is a second a cam but the fx30 can match right up to a Venice so I think you’re okay!
good stuff
Hi, do you prepare the fx30 compare to the zv-e1 ? I hesitate between them. I vlog and watches reviews on my channel.
No idea I’ve never used one!
Is that Nicole Shapiro at 2:53?
yup!
wait, fx30 is already a year !?
Yup I got mine October 28, last year!
It would be perfect if it only had a mechanical shutter :(
That might be the a6700 I guess!
Bruh yes we do need 12800. I use it every week 😅
Then this isn’t the camera for ya 😬
@@KofiYeboah not for A cam but for b cam yes! 🫣
You hyping up the FX30 so often is a big ego boost for me haha
coming from someone whose used almost every recent Sony Camera and owning a RED, its a GREAT camera.
Copped
💯💯💯
Leave your social networks Brother, Good content 🔥
Thanks!!
Time code????
You need a special cable but yes you can
Nowadays Sony a6700 will do the same for 400$ less and photos too.
The fx30 still takes photos, dual cars slots, Cine ei , anamorphic desqueeze and raw external , B&H also has a rebate on rn 😮💨
