    I have been recording track day on-board since the first Go Pro camera was available back in 2007. They have improved a lot in that time. Only within the last year and a half did I become aware of the high quality sensors in the newer models. I used to have to combine data from a stand alone GPS logger and video. Now that's all done for us. Really great to get the benefit of your experience. Thank you!

Looks like I'm getting a Go pro! P.s if you run out of ideas and want to do a suspension setup video for track or track vs road adjustments I'm all ears 😁 Will definitely remember to heavy brake and downshift quickly but think my next biggest improvement would be in dialling in the perfect f&r rebound and compression

    I have GoPro 7 and 8 black, but I always have problem to get a decent GPS data from GoPro. It's either jumping around or missing data, so the 18hz update ratio means nothing to me. Use a phone to run RaceChrono with XGPS 160 is much stable and accurate option for me.

    Is there any chance of an update to this video to look at full data logging (throttle position, etc) and using that data? My bike has the latest Ducati DDA+ GPS but it cannot export as CSV so it cannot be used for video overlays, so I was wondering about options for getting full data. It would be really useful for me to be able to see on a video when I am really fully open with the throttle, braking, etc.

    Just regarding phone GPS, it's not about the frequency but the number of frequencies supported. Typically this has only been a single band which leads to multipath errors, ie not particularly accurate. Some phones now support dual-band GPS which makes them much more accurate, down to centimeters in most cases.

    Hey Sylvain...great tutorials....as always! Can I ask, if you had the option, would you have another GPS data logger (Qstarz for example) as well as the GoPro Hero 8 Black? I have the Hero 8 Black & have no confidence with the data (or lack of) back from a trackday I did at Brands & Estoril last year! The video quality is great, but the data is zero! Very disappointed with GoPro...hence the question of using Qstarz BL-1000GT BLE. Thanks again....oh, great feedback from the pitlane at Barcelona! A natural with the microphone!

    @Sylvain Best thing since Netflix. Just binge-watched all your english content. I think a video catered to those with older bikes without or with very little technology like TCS, Quickshifters or auto-blippers could be quite interesting as well! Just a pure man vs. machine situation.
    In a previous video you mentioned how important it is to downshift as you brake before you roll off the throttle at the same time. I would have to be operating the clutch too with my 04 zx6r (no slipper clutch).Normally I try to rev-match when riding, but I guess I should skip rev-matching when gearing down aggressively right? Someone else maybe?
    Thanks!

    You know what would be really cool... if we could get a high resolution view of the track map, and overlay that with the actual line that the rider is taking around the track. I think it would be possible to do this if you combine the GPS data and the video file, and use computer vision and deep learning to identify the position of the bike relative to the edges of the track. I think it would be a very good tool for training.

    Hi Sylvain. Two questions. 1. May I ask the best way to keep your one piece leathers fresh and not smelly after a track day? 2. Can you do a theory video on what professional racers are taught for emergency technique for both high side and low side at track if it becomes unavoidable. Example, tuck in your arms...

  • @wali363
    @wali363 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    thats so nice of you to take out the time and make such videos for us. just a question when recording the session using go-pro do i need to data logging with race chrono as well or the data in gopro Hero is enough. in my case i am using a gopro hero 6 black and i am interesting in not to loose out the lean angle that race chrono pro logs

    • @SylvainGuintoli
      @SylvainGuintoli  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to have your phone onboard to record, just the GoPro with GPS ON. Then upload the file onto RCP. Lean angle is recorded by the GoPro itself 👍🏻

  • @GiacintoMarcellino

    So if you want to use the gopro and racechrono you just record the sessions with the gopro and then open the app on the phone and do Import-> go pro sensor data or import-> raw video?

    • @SylvainGuintoli
      @SylvainGuintoli  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not tried any on my GSX-R. This issue is that lap timing is not allowed on track days. In Motogp most Teams use 2D.

    • @lonpfrb
      @lonpfrb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would suggest Vbox Sport with iPhone app for display of current and predictive lap times. Race logic are serious engineers so make good kit.
      Bear in mind that many circuits have different insurance for race or track days so may not allow timing equipment. Obviously phone screens could be off when you see the marshals or scrutineer...
      Good quality mounts with backup are a must, just as Sylvain shows.

    Nice video, thanks. I currently use Harry's lap timer with an Android phone and an OBDLinkMX. I like the OBD because it means my data has revs, gears and engine temp as well as speed etc any idea if you can use the OBD with a Gopro? I would love that

    • @SylvainGuintoli
      @SylvainGuintoli  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harry’s is good but doesn’t support GoPro GPS import. So you have different solutions here:
      1/Use Harry’s + OBD + external GPS like XGPS160 or Garmin GLO (to get good quality gps datas) + GoPro or any other action cam. Then you can sync your data and footage on the app.
      2/Use RaceChrono Pro with OBD and GoPro. RaceChrono supports GoPro Mp4 files AND gps datas from the GoPro so no need for external gps.
      3/ TrackdayGenius also supports GoPro Mp4 and GPS files import.

    @Sylvain Guintoli. I have heard the phrase "always on the gas or always on the brakes, never coasting" This makes me wonder as I have previously been told on tuition days coming off of a straight into a long sweeping right hander (Donnington) to build up all my speed on the straight and to come off the throttle going through the bend in order to get the bike to drop and get my knee down and then back on the gas as soon as possible to drive out. I was told this as I was previously continuing to accelerate through this corner and was unable to get my knee down as that action was causing the bike to stand up. My question is, is the advice I was told about coming off the throttle through the corner with no brakes correct as this would be coasting I suppose?
    Hope this makes sense.
    Thanks

      And with the same point at Melbourne, should I always have either brakes on coming into the corner and then transition into some positive (if small) amount of throttle, or should the braking all be done and then as with the previous advice I was given come off of both lean into the bend without either and then pick up the throttle as soon as possible to drive out?

    Does this work on insta 360 x2 as well? for the GPS telemetry.

    I would like know if you use the software "GoPro only" by Race Technology for your analysis.
    Thank you

    I can’t seem to figure out how to do this data overlay with just using the go pro? I have to have my phone as well to match the session time on my phone with go pro footage, which isn’t very accurate

    Great vid, does anyone know of a website where you can do what this two apps create (overlay of speedometer, inclination and whatnot ???) my GoPro 10 splits my 20 min session in two separate videos

      The number of video files created by the GoPro doesn’t matter. Once they are uploaded to the RaceChrono app, the app will transcode everything (video footage and data overlay) into a new video file which can then be uploaded direct to TH-cam or whatever.

    i'm confused. i use racechrono pro on my phone as a laptimer but the video seems to be saying it is a video rendering app as well. i'm on windows 10. quick search of google doesn't seem to support this?

    What about dedicated devices like the Aim Solo 2, Sylvain ? It's 10 Hz and gives you realtime feedback, displaying your splits or predicitve times

      Yes that’s a good system, as well as 2D but more aimed at racing. Lap timing is not permitted in UK for trackdays. It’s also quite a bit more expensive than the options presented here.

      I find the predictive lap to be the most useful piece of information one can get on the bike (on in the car) while riding: every time you try something new, you can see if it's beneficial or not
