  • Segment 1: Tobaccoland
    The dangers of smoking are no secret in the U.S., but in Indonesia, the tobacco industry is virtually unregulated. The result? Over two-thirds of all men are smokers, and it is commonplace for children as young as six to take up the habit. Tobacco is a $100 billion industry here, with TV and print ads everywhere. Investigating this phenomenon in Malang, VICE visits a clinic that promises cures to a plethora of modern ailments through tobacco and smoking -- with our intrepid correspondent getting the full smoke-therapy treatment.
    Segment 2: Underground Heroin Clinic
    Heroin is the most addictive drug on earth, and some people will do anything to kick the habit. Enter Ibogaine -- a drug made out of the African iboga root, whose intense, hallucinogenic properties make it a Type-A felony drug. But many swear it's the most effective way to kick heroin addiction -- especially when combined with a voodoo-type ritual that involves face paint and chanting. VICE follows the journey of a heroin addict who travels to Mexico, where Ibogaine is legal, to try to finally quit.

      I can definitely see where you’re coming from. I think the parents don’t realize that they have an enormous influence on their children and especially at their age peer pressure and role models play a big role. I think because everyone around them is doing it, parents can’t seem to pinpoint where the influence is coming from, and so they try to blame other things.

    Indonesian here and despite the release date of this video being in 2014, cigarette use has actually been restricted for some years now. Pictures of cancerous lungs, destroyed teeth etc has been on the packs for a few years. Smoking bans in most office buildings, schools and malls. Buying cigs at the mall or at supermarkets are also restricted to those over 18. The problem is the "warung", the small stalls people set up (like the one in this video where the kid bought his cigarette from), supermarkets in rural or low ses neighbourhoods that disregard the ban and keep on selling the stuff to the underage kids. The irony is that most of those from lower ses are the ones who spend the most on cigarettes, despite having less income and health care support.
    It's gotten so bad that it's really just pointless to try.

    • @ViskasVelniop
      @ViskasVelniop 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      this is not true. was just in indonesia last year, there is no wide-scale anti-smoking images on cig packs. only this small little blerb at the bottom in bahasa that says smoking can cause cancer. anastasia, i dont think u know what restriction is. someone who wants to smoke is going to buy cigarettes at a warung. if it was restricted, then kids wouldn't be able to buy cigarettes, period. there would be a high penalty for warung owners if caught selling cigs to minors. for example, losing their business. thats how it is in countries where cigs are truly restricted.

    • @anastasiaye4064
      @anastasiaye4064 9 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Well Shane, too bad, but I have been living in Indonesia all my life and yes, cigarette packs have recently been plastered with images of cancerous lungs and rotting teeth to discourage smoking. In fact, I just went to a supermarket this morning and it doesn't take a genius to realise that all the cartons (placed behind the counter) were plastered with similar pictures.
      You don't seem to realise the way stuff works. The warungs are NOT legal. They don't have legal permits allowing them to sell their goods. This is the reason why they don't follow the law. However, warungs are culturally part of local cultures and therefore trying to limit them would bring public outrage, like how people went ballistic when the Jakarta government evicted the people who lived illegally near the rivers, occupying government lands. They hide behind the fact that people perceive warung owners as less economically able and therefore are supposed to be given more leeway. It's ridiculous really. This is why warungs are usually illegal without proper permits.
      However if you go to proper places with permits like at the mall or regular supermarket chains, they do follow the law. You won't get to buy packs of cigarettes or any alcoholic beverages if you're underage. And yes, the government actually does punish places that sell sell alcoholic beverages or cigarettes to minors. Places where you can't smoke, regulations on smoking advertisements, etc, are covered on the 109th presidential regulation from 2012.

      Annisa Saleh Education what separates it. Generally in any country, suburbans and rural area are the most left behind compared to the others.
      Now it seems smoking became one of just fine thing to do in the 'kampung' culture. Changing that will take years and add up with the burning house claims by the residents, it may take a decade or two if the government doesn't take any literally harsh actions.

      Bad ass. I've been on methadone for over a decade, after nearly 20 years as an addict & most of that an IV user. I've looked into ibogaine, and if I ever move towards getting off methadone I will try it. I'm in a good place right now, but even on the most advanced levels of liberty I can't travel like I want to while on the restrictions that methadone treatment demands. But it works for me right now, and i am living well. Ibogaine has always seemed like a truly incredible experience though.
      I'm so glad to hear a story like yours. It makes me cry with joy to see people doing well, I'm so deeply happy when someone moves through addiction into a better place for themselves. Have you seen any of the things they're doing with addiction & brain surgery at the University of West Virginia? Incredible. I just bawled learning about that, it looks like it will offer similar stellar success rates to ibogaine. The more routes away from addiction, the more people can find their way.

U got to put the work in like I did. U get into drugs for short and quick gradification and can't get out with the same mindset. The suffering is what scares u away again. I suffered (was actively using) for about 7-8 years. I’ve had kidney stones, pancreatitis, skin ground all the way down to my bone where it was showing. And nothing holds a candle to the uncomfortable feeling of opiate withdrawal.

      Pot is not habit forming. People who are bipolar use it and think they are habituated is another story. The high of weed is differant than being drunk.Being drunk means you do not have commonsense and often can not remmember what happened. If really high somebody will get into the driver's seat and decide not to drive because they are high. I once legally ate some hash cake and was very wasted. I could not walk unless holding onto something. I would not have been able to get into a car. I retained commonsense and remembered everything. Alcohol brings out negative things like agression. THC makes you notice things.

    • @TheMaxundmoritz
      @TheMaxundmoritz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Somethings will quickly end being wasted on pot. Girl(cocaine) and a suddenly fright like riding on a horse and having a saddle break a strap will do it. One could go to a major cannabis event and be high as hell. The host would give you something to put up your nose and you could soberly drive home. Science could but has not come up with a sober up pill. Instead we have a massive industry punishing people for a medical condition. It does not work.

      I beat a heavy opiate addiction with Suboxone. 13 months clean. Its an alternative to Methadone and I found it worked much better. Killed cravings more (actually incredibly so, virtually none after a several year daily habit), with smaller dose. Its still a powerful opiate, but its not as hard on your body as methadone is, and its easier to wean off. More expensive depending on where you live if you don't have coverage though, thats the only downside to Suboxone as an alternative.

      Yes I have looked at that, the problem is in order to switch from methadone to suboxone you have to be clean for 3 days (of ALL opiates incl. methadone) this is much hardeder to do than it sounds.

    • @wassupit
      @wassupit 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      24-48 hours will suffice in many cases. You can start the Suboxone as soon as withdraw symptoms begin to set in. With methadone, yes, it is a longer period than it would be for say heroin or morphine, but usually the full 72 hours in unnecessary. And worst case scenario you take it early, experience precipitated withdrawal for a good 8 hours (worst 8 hours ever though), then your past it and on medication that has the potential to help change your life.

    I love how the dad blames the cigarette companies for their ads, and then blames the government for not doing enough to stop his son from smoking, and he says it as he exhales smoke.
    YOU, the FATHER, are your son's most dominant influence in his life. He sees you smoking, you allow him to smoke, it's YOUR fault your son smokes. It isn't the government's fault you fool!

    Almost fell for the iboga trap in South Africa Capetown coming to know the owner of the "clinic" bought from the same dealer as me. Dealer wanted my business so bad he stopped me from going outing the owner. Thanks Stan. Now I'm 7 years on methadone.

    I don't believe ibogaine stops withdrawal completely. It's just that you do not notice the withdrawal symptoms because you are tripping balls and then have an afterglow for a few days after the trip. If you are on an opiate/opioid with a long half life, such as methadone or suboxone, then I believe you would encounter PAWS (post acute withdrawal symptoms).
    They also don't mention that the price for an ibogaine session, such as the one shown in this video, can easily cost $10-20k USD, straight cash since insurance doesn't cover anything. I just think too many people make it out to be an instant cure, meaning that they just do the ibogaine trip and then think their addiction is cured. Unfortunately addiction is not that easy =\

    Ibogaine is yet another proof that natural "drugs" like weed arent actually harmful its the human-made shit what we have to be afraid of... Really an inspiring story good job yet again vice :D

      fr. It's crazy how people compare the absolute cvs receipt of an ingredients list of cigarettes to the one ingredient in cannabis: cannabis.

    • @jhulahula23rd48

      @@rdes-xj2wz well.. I mean technically tobacco a "natural drug" and contains many carcinogens before any of those extra "ingredients" are added to it. The "well its natural" argument doesnt really work for tobacco, or really anything to be honest. Plenty of deadly drugs grow from natural plants and tobacco is just a leaf

    Wow… old video…new post… but from someone who battled opioids for almost two decades, to see someone STILL sober after 14 months that tried over 30 times to get clean unsuccessfully by himself is a miracle. Snake oil? Haberdashery? Who knows but something clicked this time.

    Without a doubt, the Indonesian government is fully aware of the huge negative health consequences the tobacco industry is having on it's citizens.
    The problem is they've allowed the industry to flourish virtually unchecked for far to long. Now it's at the point where the tobacco companies have a huge upper hand against any regulation attempts from the Indonesian government.
    Now that they are sponsoring sporting events, concerts, schools and many other industries and are some of the biggest employers in the area.. Any strict regulations would end up making the Indonesian government being portrayed as the bad guys..
    All of this is self-inflected.. It's going to be very hard to make big changes.

    The first, and not the last, person I knew who died of smack was in Aug 1969, Folkestone England, he was 18, I was 21, his name was Tony Harrington and he was what is called today A Drugstore Cowboy, a few died after that.
    Smack is evil, I know, I snorted enough of it though I mixed it with Cocaine, speedball, but that was way back when when we, Baby Boomers, thought that we would just go on an on.
    Ive been clean and sober since 1982, I sometimes wonder just who i was back then.
    Youth is wasted on the young.
