takerdust You think they have scientist and programs good enough for nuclear testing but can't hack sony (which has been "hacked" multiple times already)?
Michal Poky a lot of their nuclear info was stolen or sold to them. Even that took a couple of decades to obtain. To be a hacker you need to have a great deal of freedom, which is something even the most privileged citizen is not given. This is a country where if you have any book that's not related to your vocation, or talking about the history of the Dear leader and his family, you are shot.
That last scene with the kids is even more heartbreaking today as it was ten years ago, things have only gotten worse and those kids have had enough time to realize the horror.
What's heartbreaking about it? The media has lied to you that NK people are suffering? The freedom of choosing genders isn't in NK and i think it's good and ok.
This is absolutely wild. Like a fever dream. Thank you VICE for putting this together. And props to you Dennis Rodman, what a tough position to be in, no matter how you handle it.
North Korea, to me, seems like an example of if the Nazis or Stalin would have won their respective conflicts. No matter what they do to their people the rest of the world just sort of stays out of it. It's almost like we are allowing this social experiment to blossom and we are taking very close notes.
@@joshuaedwards3322agreed... it's incredibly strange for this place to exist throughout our lifetime and for us to do nothing to help those within NKorea's borders. Imagine being a VICE journalist being able to shake hands with Kim Jong-un and make a toast in the same table. I mean VICE! They've made many documentaries unfavourable to the DPRK and they get to go to a dinner with the "Dear" Leader. Insane tbh.
If anything they will not stop with the anti-American propaganda but those kids on the court will always remember the friendly Americans who came and played basketball with them. That alone may be a start at renewing the country.
Alexander Patrick Since you sound AntiAmerica why don't you go live in North Korea & then you might elaborate more. A country that surpresses it's fellowman. The United States of America may not be a perfect country, but what country is, but sure beats North Korea with their fake shopping mall & computer lab, etc. Supression of religion or faith to add on & countless NK detectors who know the real deal unlike you. Go figure....
Alexander Patrick Criticism of the regime or the leadership in North Korea, if reported, is enough to make you and your family ‘disappear’ from society and end up in a political prison camp. It goes without saying that there is no free media inside the country. The only opinion allowed to be voiced inside the country is the regime’s. It is illegal for the North Korean people to leave their country without the regime’s permission, and the regime attempts to restrict the people’s movement even inside their own country. If you wish to travel to another part of the country, you are supposed to have a specific purpose and obtain permission from your work unit. If you do not live in Pyongyang, the showcase capital where most resources are concentrated, you will likely be denied access. The regime has also forcibly relocated hundreds of thousands of North Koreans to less favorable parts of the country as a form of punishment and political persecution. Who's the real puppet pulling strings in NK?
Dragon Cocplayer No, the USSR started N Korea... Hence them explaining that Kim Jong Sun was put into place by the Russians... But I get it, it's fun to blame everything on the top dawg. As for Al Qaeda and ISIS, while I do believe we fueled the fire, I do not believe we are the cause of them. We did give them guns (Al Qaeda) to fight the Russians in the 80s, though.
I felt so sad for the man who couldn't play in the NBA due to political conflict. Like he said he wasn't interested in politics, the man just loved basketball.
Its happening again with a very talented young football (soccer) player. He played in the top flight in Italy and has since disappeared from the public eye. There are some interesting documentaries on youtube about him, Han Kwang-song, hes still young and ready to play. So sad.

Who would of ever imagined the Harlem globetrotters reaching out to this generation of kids? Amazing!...
You believe Kim jung un is a dictator because your evil propandist western media made you believe so. Have ever wondered the damaging effects of USA sanctions on NK.
We need open dialogue with these governments, he tried to do something about it which was admirable and as much as I despise Donald Trump he also tried to open dialoguer as well even if he was still a fucking embarrassment by saluting a random general lol
19:10 - 19:45 they are in a stadium filled with 10,000 people and other than the basketball dribbling, there is barely any background noise. this whole video is eerie but that is especially eerie to me
That computer guy was definitely the most interesting and creepy party of this doc. He seemed so on edge and careful with his words. It was as if everything he was saying was scripted and one slip up could get him killed. His hand trembling and his shaky voice was no coincidence.
Visitors to NK are permanently in a tunnel of state organized theatre sets, you never see anything they don't want you to see. The guy was hand picked to spread an image that NK is both open and connected and taking part in the most complex of science. Nothing about any of this is by accident. The thing is that people designing the propaganda don't really understand how well people from the rest of the world see through manipulation like this because were exposed to so much media. To us, it looks obviously staged and or coerced. Like a ransom video.
The one guy actually working on the computer that they spoke to looked scared and hesitate to speak. Everything on the tour and every where they went looks so staged and practiced. North Korea is scary and this video is amazing.
Thought you guys might find this interesting. I did find a few North Korean physics papers on nature index, one of which was a published paper on string theory. www.natureindex.com/institution-outputs/north-korea/faculty-of-physics-kim-il-sung-university/574d4d45140ba0452c8b4569

The 3 Harlem Globe trotters should get way more recognition in our country after performing the way they did under such circumstances. All they did was entertain and enjoy themselves with the people.
Amazing ambassadors. Walking everywhere with a big smile, interacting with the locals, playing with the kids. These are probably the first Americans that any of them had ever seen in real life.
They’re black. Black people in this country are never given the recognition for the things that we do that is good. Only the bad. I love America for what it offers but it’s never surprising to see things like that.
@@wordpolice7564 i think her finger was hurt from the spinning, not fear of failure... I believe those kids although looking ordinary, probably come from previlige families
It's very admirable for these guys to give some joy and entertainment to these oppressed people. Dennis got unfairly slammed in the media. I think they all did an amazing thing.
I got chills at the computer scene. The guy who gave the talk about string theory was so scared. They probably forced him to read that script for days in advance. So much planning to deceive was put in place on their visit. I almost cried seeing this. Poor people. Poor dolphins.
That statement Is in every way illogical, why would they build an entire shopping plaza, gym, 2 basketball arenas, an entire city and allow for those civilian parents and children at the end to converse for all but 4 Americans?
He's right every aspect of tourism or journalism in North Korea is staged. And the capital isn't the whole country. And sometimes they actually stage a whole empty hotel just for 2 or 3 visiting strangers.
@@jojolafrite90 thats not true at all. I was there in April and nowadays there are so many tourist groups coming in and out daily. Bold statement to say that things are staged. People live their life there, come on now. All those people have a daily life and things to do and things to see.
ok so around 28 minutes there is a whole village of children in awe all acting? like they're acting amazed because they need to act for the cameras? oh so they bred a whole village of children purely for staged purposes? makes total sense.
It’s too bad that western media only highlighted Dennis Rodman as a nutcase. He was a genius ! He entered into diplomacy in an intelligent way that no other western politician ever has. Hats off to the Harlem globetrotters and the producer of this doc
It's been a while since I watched this documentary, were any political prisoners released during Rodman's visit? Did life get better for any North Koreans after this two week basketball camp? In my humble opinion ambassadors main mission is to make lasting changes around the world, not to be treated like a King for a day and fly out of there having changed nothing. Rodman gave these guys two weeks of basketball, while probably consuming more champagne and lobster than these people will see in a lifetime, he's not my hero.
@@joshuaedwards3322What do you propose? Go in there and demand changes by waging war? Sanction them because of their atrocities? Browbeat them into submission? Alienate and isolate them from the world until they change? NEWFLASH!!! That isn't working either!! @@rft9776 No they actually could not make a contract agreement to the team he was going to ( The Dallas Mavericks) where the 6 million dollars which was supposed to go to the player go all to the NK government. So they would basically be giving 6 million US dollars to the NK government every year. Research your history before you do your anti US bullshit.
@@Boooooooooo541 Exactly, but that isn't allowed because of UN sanctions. If NK would've let him keep the money (yeah, right) or if the sanctions wouldn't have been in place it would have been possible.

Honestly it was the most organic thing about their whole time in DPRK. It was genuine. Props to the Globetrotters going out there and doing what they did.
The 3 basketball dudes have got to be some of the coolest people you will find anywhere. Apart from being great at their sport, thorough showman and entertainers even in the most tense situations.
That’s what I was saying he seemed so happy to meet the Harlem guys and wanted them back again you could tell from the look in his eyes he meant it so sad that he couldn’t play in the us and be free
This reminds me of when I went through a foreign exchange program with the Japanese Air Self Defense Force when I was in the Marine Corps. I was the only Marine for miles. The vibe of this video reminds me of how depressed I was due to the differences in lifestyle.
Those American basketball players seem like very cool dudes, they handled the whole experience really well, top performance, behavior and attitude in very dangerous circumstances.
The Globetrotters are goodwill ambassadors so they're absolute pros when it comes to things like this. Still, they did a fantastic job since it's very unprecedented to travel to a place like North Korea for a goodwill basketball game with the dictator in the audience.

North Korea, to me, seems like an example of if the Nazis or Stalin would have won their respective conflicts. No matter what they do to their people the rest of the world just sort of stays out of it. It's almost like we are allowing this social experiment to blossom and we are taking very close notes.

Agreed! I think this type of gathering can unite and improve relations between N.Korea and the U.S.
