  • As the world trembles in the wake of the American elections, it's time to follow and join the example of Hawaiians, and indigenous nations across time, to Stand Tall, Be Fearless and Steadfast, Paddle on in Our Pursuits of Justice, Until our Dignity and Independence is Restored!
    A performance of Kumu Hina Wong-Kalu's composition "KŪ HA’AHEO E KU’U HAWAI’I - Stand tall my Hawai‘i" during the 2016 Kamehameha Schools Song Contest Hō‘ike on the theme ‘O Hawai‘i Ku‘u Kulāiwi: Songs of My Beloved Homeland - More at KumuHina.com and APlaceintheMiddle.org
    Kaiko’o ka moana kā i lana nei Hawai'i
    The sea of Hawai'i surges in turmoil
    Nāueue a hālulu ka honua a Haumea
    The earth of Haumea rumbles and shakes
    Nākulukulu e ka lani ki’eki’e kau mai i luna
    The highest of heavens shudder up above
    Auē ke aloha ‘ole a ka malihini
    Alas! Woeful indeed are the heartless foreigners
    ==============================================
    Kū ha’aheo e ku’u Hawai’i
    Stand tall my Hawai’i
    Mamaka kaua o ku’u ‘āina
    Band of warriors of my land
    ‘O ke ehu kakahiaka o nā ‘ōiwi o Hawai’i nei
    The new dawn for our people of Hawai’i is upon us
    No ku’u lahui e hā’awi pau a i ola mau
    For my nation I give my all so that our legacy lives on
    ==============================================
    Auhea wale ‘oukou pū’ali koa o Keawe
    Where are you soldiers of Keawe
    Me ko Kamalālāwalu la me Kākuhihewa
    Along with those of Maui and O'ahu
    Alu mai pualu mai me ko Manokalanipō
    Unite, join together with those of Kaua'i
    Ka’i mai ana me nā kama a Kahelelani
    Marching alongside the descendants of Ni'iahu
    ==============================================
    E nāue imua e nā poki’i a e inu wai ‘awa’awa
    Move forward young ones and drink of the bitter waters
    E wiwo’ole a ho’okūpa’a ‘a’ohe hope e ho’i mai ai
    Be fearless, steadfast for there is no turning back
    A na’i wale nō kākou kaukoe mau i ke ala
    Let’s press onward straight on the path of victory
    Auē ke aloha ‘ole a ka malihini
    Alas! Woeful are the heartless foreigners!

    E lei mau i lei mau kākou e nā mamo aloha
    Be honored always oh beloved descendants of the land
    I lei wehi ‘a’ali’i wehi nani o ku’u ‘āina
    Let us wear the honored ‘a'ali'i of our beloved land

    Thank you for sharing this beautiful mele. I am a native of Guam (a Chamorro), and like our Hawaiian and other Pacific island brothers and sisters, we too, are in a fight for our true independence and return of our motherland's dignity. Thank you for doing what you do for your people - there is no struggle much like that of the indigenous who have to fight for what is rightfully theirs and their ancestors.

      There seems to be a misunderstanding. I am not Hawai'ian. But my wife and I come to Hawai'i to swim in the wonderful Hawai'ian culture and traditions, and don't want to change a thing. "...the indigenous who have to fight what is rightfully theirs and their ancestors." ??? The distance between Chicago and Hanalei is much further than 4,200 miles. In comparison to Hawai'i, Chicago might as well be on the dark side of the moon. Hawai'ians, keep doing what you're doing. Do it more. Further embrace your ancestry. No one wants you to change except, perhaps, to further appreciate what you've got.

    This song has a beautiful melody, and even though I am not Hawaiian, I am Korean-American. As a Korean-American, we went through so many hardships like Hawaiians. My second homeland korea was taken over by the Japanese, as the same for Hawaii front the U.S. and Japanese bombing and control in WW2. Let there be peace in the Pacific islands and nations, and together we are one. ❤️❤️

    I stoked people love our hula and chants but in all reality it's not done right unless done by Hawaiians and real kumu's of traditional Hawaiian halau or hula groups . But still thanks for the support and love . It's just a slap in the face when you see a hula group from Japan or British UK or England it's like wtf none of those cultures really know what hula is or anything about it's origin

She did so much for this land and we should do the same as like she did for us and our keiki and our moopuna and keep our lahui going for our keiki for our moopuna and teach our keiki our moopuna to do the same and as long as we stand together and stand tall we can get through anything it is that we are trying to fight against! He ninau ko'u. A'ole akamai wau i ka 'olelo Hawai'i (kekahi haumana, wale no), So I ask why the title would not be Kū ha'aheo... (Stand Proud...)? Ku'u is the (dear) possessive but Puku'i (Hawaiian Dictionary) does not recognize Kū'u as a word at all. That said, the choir did a beautiful version of this mele.

      kapuoa i thought the same thing but I’m not a Hawaiian expert. The only thing I instantly thought about was her influence from her Tongan husband?
      Kū = stand (Hawaiian)
      Tū = stand (Samoan)
      Tu’u = stand (Tongan)
      Lā = sun (Hawaiian)
      Lā = sun (Samoan)
      La’a = sun (Tongan)
      When i hear some Tongans say these words it doesn’t sound like there’s an okina in there. It honestly sounds like the kahako
