    Julia Duffy was perfect for NEWHART. After seeing this interview you realize that there was as much genius in her casting as there was in the show's writing. She is a smart, cerebral actress who knew exactly how to play a scene with Bob Newhart and mine it for every last nugget of gold. What a pleasure to see this interview of a talented, funny woman. Thank you!

    The best sit coms have an impeccable supporting cast. ‘Newhart’ was one.

    • @jedijones
      @jedijones ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oddly enough, it didn't start out that way. It was saved in retooling, by adding and expanding the roles for Julia, Peter and William Sanderson. I don't know how many other shows only landed on their definitive cast after the first two seasons

    • @bloqk16
      @bloqk16 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I loved the Newhart show when it was retooled with 'Larry Darryl & Darryl' and 'Mike."
      For the life of me, though, was a friend of mine that could not 'get into' the humor of the 'Newhart' TV show and was dismissive of that TV show. Yet, in all the years I knew him, he always claimed to be one of the biggest fans of Bob Newhart; and was totally enthralled with "The Bob Newhart Show."
      What was doubling puzzling about my friend being dismissive about the "Newhart" TV show was when I asked him what it was about the TV show he took exception about. He was at a loss-of-words with an answer, except to say he didn't watch it.
      I suspect my friend took exception that the "Newhart" TV show had a strong supporting cast; whereas my friend would have preferred the spotlight being solely on Bob for the half-hour.

    • @djr6876
      @djr6876 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bloqk16 My mom would say the same as your friend,also never having watched “Newhart”! I speculated ,perhaps, each show having 2 completely different settings may have been the cause. 1 show set in an urban high rise office and apartment building with our star having an equally impressive phd. career.. 2nd show, being the complete opposite, a New England countryside B’n’B run by a writer of ‘how to’ manuals in a town of bumpkins. Some viewers could easily prefer one premise over the other. I liked both!

    • @bloqk16
      @bloqk16 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@djr6876 You did well to encapsulate the essence of the "Newhart" TV show.
      Between the two shows, my preference was towards the "Newhart" TV show since the supporting characters were all slight exaggerations of people I was acquainted with in life.
      The 'Michael' character did well to capture the spirit of the self-absorbed and shallow 'yuppies' that I worked with at a high-tech company in the 1980s.
      George, with Larry Darryl & Darryl, reminded me of some rural folks I crossed paths with when I lived in the San Joaquin Valley area of California a decade earlier.
      The narcissistic character of 'Stephanie' . . . well, that type still abounds, especially on social media.

    Julia Duffy was always an intense student of acting. She's a joy here, very serious and analytical. She's spent time as a director, and I'm sure her actors learned much from her. Her comedic female role models speak of her profound intelligence. She's had real tragedy in her life. What a strong woman she is. Bless you, Julia.

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't know about the tragedy but its interesting that she talks more about the mechanics of comedy than most comedians, who mostly talk about htemselves, so it was a really interesting and informative interview. Seinfeld talks a lot ABOUT talking a lot about comedy but rarely actually does so in interviews, even HIS interview for the pioneers. But this was a real gold mine even if she doens't know it.

Julia played the perfect rich, dumb blonde and her chemistry with the late Peter Scolari was the best. @mikearchibald744 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting that I couldn't find a clip of Gobel doing standup but there's a Norman Lear clip where he compares Gobel to Newhart. Thats why most standups make fairly shitty actors adn why their shows depend so highly on the producers. In the wrong fit its all wrong. If Mitch Hedberg had done acting he would have been that kind of actor I think. I think Seinfeld picked that up, where he was as happy for other people to get the laughs as him. Even people like Roseanne you could tell kind of hated when the spotlight deviated off them at all.

      She did as much with what they wrote for her. She probably doesn't get the credit she deserved, Shelley Long gets a LOT of credit for making an unlikeable character pretty likeable, and Julia did that almost as well. Newhart could have used a Larry David, because Bob clearly loved it the longer the audience applauded, he was ALL about the audience. Whereas apparantly Larry David would get pretty irate when people applauded for Kramer and they used to ask audiences to stop.

    Julia Duffy is a talented performer who got the shaft on “Designing Women” - it could have worked if they had come up with a better character for her. But the writers failed her.

    • @kumada84
      @kumada84 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Definitely. They basically took Stephanie, removed the parts that made her likeable, and pasted that over a generic one-note "yuppy" stereotype. I never understood what that character was supposed to be or what her purpose on the show was (other than to replace Delta Burke), and it sounds like they didn't either - which makes sense. They kind of just threw her out there and expected her to somehow make the character work because she did it on Newhart. 🤷‍♀️. The weird thing is that at the same time, Carlene was so great... (But of course, Jan Hooks was an absolute comedic genius - she could literally sit there and do nothing and be hilarious - and they weren't expecting her to recreate a character she had already played before.)

    I remember a comedic actor asked about a part and he said when he rehearsed his lines the night before the Audition his wife suggested he deliberately mispronounce the word gnome as gah-none in the audition as it would be funnier. The next day When the casting person corrected his mispronunciation he replied he knew the correct pronunciation but his wife suggested this way would be funnier for the audience, that got him the part, although from that point on he played the show’s idiot.

    I did find Newhart was ahead of its time, particularly in the first two years because it LITERALLY was a 'show about nothing'. What went on in a small Vermont town makes Seinfeld look like, well, New York. And WAY too much plot. Jerry was MANIC compared to Bob, and compare Kramer, George and Elaine to George, Kurt, and Larry, Darryl and Darryl. I actually liked it LESS when they got rid of Kurt, because before that it was very much like early Seinfeld and was like a funny Woody Allen movie, in fact to my mind a lot funnier.
    But early on they weren't 'easy jokes'. Larry and the Darryls then would drag out the applause longer than Kramer, and before they even said a line, and while you are watching it on TV, thats just wasted comedy space. I think I may have even yelled at the screen "Yes, its them, you've seen them EVERY show, they are going to say the SAME line in EXACTLY the same way, now shut up!"
    Kurt was actually a gold mine, not sure why they didn't think he was funny enough, but the maid was in the Elaine quandry where they simply didn't know how to write for her. Stephanie was a little TOO 'one note', and in those days you couldn't really stretch that out. Television has a weird puritan value even today, but the parade of boyfriends she likely WOULD have had in a small vermont town and her reaction to them, would have been hilarious, but of course a single woman having carnal relations or even the IDEA of carnal relations was just out of the question. So as a result she was a little TOO one note. The adage in comedy is that as long as they are laughing then keep doing it, but if she and Joanna weren't just so darn pretty then I probably would have stopped watching. Although it actually makes more sense if you analyze it on the basis that it was a dream from the bob newhart show.

      @@mikearchibald744 To this day, the Kurt character destroys our enjoyment of "Newhart." My husband and I just despised him. He wasn't remotely funny to us. When the Michael character came along, he was so perfect with the entire ensemble and with the Stephanie character, that we loved him ever after. Kurt was slimey, Michael was perfection. We all enjoy different things.

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats all true, but thats why i liked him, he was more of a character. michael and stephanie were caricatures, not really characters, you could take them seriously as people, just like the three darryls. Even later on there were those two old guys I dont remember their names, but they were just so stupid and crazy there was no realism.
      But have to say that kurt was never really slimey, he was definitely a character, but i would agree that he was out of place on the show so i can see why somebody would think that. But the kind of unreality became why it was so easy to pull off the whole 'it was all a dream' thing at the end. Same as with the maid, stephanie became easy laughs, while she was actually nice and more of a challenge to make funnier. I know they hooked kurt up with the clown but i'd like to think he hooked up with whatshername later. Oh right, its not real.

      I remember when the whole thing with Delta Burke went down on Designing Women, and Julia Duffy should have just said "NO!!" to taking that job because she was walking into an impossible situation. They should have waited until the final season to replace Delta Burke because replacing both she and Jean Smart at the same time could have never worked.
