Herbert Wells She is actually quoting Franklin D. Roosevelt who in 1939 said of the Nicaraguan President Anastasio Somoza García, "Somoza may be a son of a bitch, but he's our son of a bitch". This acknowledged that the U.S knew Somoza was a ruthless dictator and was committing crimes against humanity but was prepared to look the other way because he did what the U.S told him to do which allowed to the U.S to exploit and make money out of the Nicaraguan people. The incomparable Lady Diana Mosley. Thank you for uploading this marvellous clip. She is the most fascinating and interesting of all the Mitford sisters, and I had been looking for a longer interview of her to revel in her accent. The way she spoke was unique. She was an extremely intelligent woman and she is so charming in this clip, as always! I simply adore the woman, and her impeccable taste is an unending source of inspiration. Thank you for being you, Diana darling.
@Dickie Chaznick Setting Mrs. Mosley's merits and demerits aside for the moment, if I may, I dispute that good diction is a frippery. Perhaps you don't know that diction is how you speak entirely, including choice of words, and so is not limited to vowel formation and pronunciation, which might be what you mean. What comes out when you open your mouth frippery? I can't believe you mean that. As to her demerits, she might have had endless amounts in spades for all I know, but she doesn't seem to be a holocaust denier in this interview. If she meant to deny it here, she failed spectacularly, for she acknowledged it.
@Dickie Chaznick Thanks for your reply. Firstly, suppose someone said: "Dickie Chaznick an idiot? I don't see how anyone could possible claim it!" Nothing wrong with that, not as to form nor meaning. On to the next matter. Regarding her comments on the German atrocities, I take your point, as what I found an acknowledgement was, I agree, not a thoroughgoing one. But I don't agree completely, as it was easily close enough to one to flop as a denial. You surely know more about her than I do, and I admit I mostly forget what was in The Rules of the Games, written by her son Nicholas. Certainly, if elsewhere she denied the Holocaust, then I deplore her very memory. Other deniers might on that account visit her grave to leave flowers; let others still drop by whilst walking their dogs, if you get my meaning. My point is merely that her remarks her seemed an acknowledgement, and did not constitute a denial. Again, you might know more about it. All the best, Dickie. P.S. How do you get text rendered in italics?
@Dickie Chaznick All very interesting and made all the more vivid by your relating the personal tangent. Might you have noticed her about now and then, or spoken to her? It's ironic how outright open Stalin lovers don't get half the hate this honest, poised, elegant lady does. It's so easy for simple-minded idiots to paint things, especially those related to war, black and white. But the truth is that they are not and Lady Mosley understood that from the begining. She says things they way they are and she clearly states that what Hitler did was inexcusable yet he is solely seen as pure evil while other dictators on his same league get praised. This is a fact that no one else has the balls to admit to. She's not excusing Hitler, she only says that he was charming to her and she wouldn't have thought he would do such a thing; and she wasn't alone, millions of German people who were completely ignorant of the Camps thought the same. They were fooled, yes, but that makes them no criminals.
Who is using the family braincell? Firstly in Germany Hitler made numerous speeches about destruction of jews and the Nazis dehumanized them for more than a decade. In the war they scoured Germany for jews and sent them away on numerous trains east. Millions of German soldiers fought in the east and were involved in or witnesses atrocities and murder. The German people knew and it's utterly absurd to think they didn't.
And finally, it's individuals like you I despise; characterizing people who are disgusted by the crimes of the Nazis as "Stalin lovers" is somewhat pathetic. WW2 in Europe literally was a good v evil. Whilst the allies were far from perfect, the German behaviour on a mass scale in ww2 was arguably the most evil in human history. The fact that einzatgruppen troops in the east literally took babies, children, toddlers and shot them because of their race - in a planned, state action - beggars belief. No amount of revisionist history changes that. Thank fuck amongst those with a scrap of deceny mitford, Moseley and co are despised and their memory despised by all other than a minority of scum.
@MrZapparinThere are rude, vulgar and offensive comments here (some are anti Semitic, clearly composed by bigots), mine was not among them. My criticism of Diana Mosley was perfectly civilized and factually correct - she and her husband were rabid fascists. Unapologetically so! Why does the truth make you feel uncomfortable? That was a rhetorical question, because I couldn't care less about your warped reasons for defending bigots. Perhaps one day you'll find the courage to examine your moral weakness and attempt to become a better person. But I doubt it!
@MrZapparin You're hysterical - I obviously hit a nerve! Why do you ask if I'm Jewish? What a dumb question. So by your literal logic, you have to be Jewish or black to dislike racism? Sad. You clearly have your thumbs up your own arse - stop doing that, use all ten digits & you just might write something intelligent someday... but I won't bet my houses on it!
This woman is a true beauty. Her politics not withstanding. As I listen to her, it is obvious that each of us can justify what we believe and what actions we take in following those beliefs.
Philip Thompson My first thought was, "my Lord how old is she?? She is just stunning!!" Some of our US celebs should give up the knife and find out her beauty routine. .
Philip Thompson Not "older": OLD. I find her looks just a bit disturbing, but not nearly as disturbing as her hauteur, her self-deception, and her obliviousness.
That's because her family are not real British Aristocrats, she's German descent Saxe-Coburg and Gotha they turned up in the early 18th Century the Georges 1, 2 & 3. The real British Aristos can trace their lines back to the Plantagenets and earlier Medieval families and the Normans. Queen Lizzies an incomer!! I saw a BBC programme once about old English families they had an old school aristo who said she considered Queen Elizabeth middle class!!
@Lion of Judah It's not even capitalism anymore . Corporate tax rates are less than half what they use to be . It's "Corporatism " A totally unfair distribution of tax burden.
A bit chilling that she doesn't have an ounce of remorse about her affiliation and outright admiration of Hitler. She is certainly a compelling figure, I'll admit.
Thank you so much for posting this. After x amount of years of reading books about the family it's nice to be able to hear some of the old interviews. My only tiny correction is that this is an interview with Diana, Lady Mosley as opposed to Lady Diana Mosley. (Diana's father was not an Earl, Marquess, or Duke.) I don't think there is any audio of Unity available. The only sister's voice I haven't heard yet is Pam's.
Shallow, entitled, superior, slightly delusional...if anyone else says these things without the 'posh' they are cut down like weeds. She fell for Mosley so everything about him sparkled for her, and still does. There is nothing new about finding a dictator charming and likable for heaven sake. Psycopaths do that to you unless you are a critical thinker with sound values. She is wrong. Peace could not have been achieved, Hitler did not want peace, he wanted Europe. The British Empire was destined to fall in any case, as the colonies fought for and gained independence. Hitler wanted an Empire too, there would have been no peace. Chamberlain tried didn"t he and Hitler promptly invaded Poland then France. Hitler's anti Jewish policy was crystal clear even before he gained power. Mosley too. So she is backsliding here. Disgusting. It is true that Hitler is not the only facist to have committed war crimes against humanity. But so what? It only means that these crimes are not unique to Germany and so democracies should be vigilant, and not support local facists, the way she did.
Fascism sometimes looks like this lady .In some way very charming. Aristocrats just hate Stalin and they are not impressed with weak democracy Europe have before the war..they really think Hitler gonna make order in Europe..God knows how many people believe in that before 1939.
I got sort of scared while watching her eyes and face. Somehow out of this world and, yes, "icy". I could not have talked to her without being confused by that...
Great intriguing, beautiful and posh lady, her exquisite poise and manners - not to mention her accent- exude her pedigree and upper class upbringing, her political views, notwithstanding, quite disastrous, what a shame!
billy giles Please... You’re blaming the Jews for your unhappiness? Jews are not responsible for any nation’s misery. You’ve been sold anti-semitic victimology and you bought it. Hitler persecuted Jews and waged war on neighboring nations based on the idea of Arian supremacy and the need for Arians’ “living space”... Absurd. Do you believe there’s an Arian race? And Mrs Mosley says here in the interview that it was the war which caused Britain to be the sick man of Europe. If Margaret Thatcher was in the room she’d cut her saying it was socialism which destroyed Britain; roll back socialism and Britain would turn into “The man with the cure”. which is exactly what happened a decade after this interview .
I’ve been shocked, while watching old interviews of this woman and interviews with her husband, a horrifying number of people on TH-cam are supporters of their kind of fascism. This world deserves what it gets if it won’t learn from very clear historical examples of how not to be/act/live/think.

those eyes and that english acccent. amazing!!!! still graceful at that age with no hollywood type of cosmetic surgery. she was a complex individual as someone pointed out below here. you might not like her because she sympathize(d) with hitler, mostly the person not the politician, but she makes a series of good points, truthful points that explain the contradictions or ambiguity seen in western society.
dekubaner She was not "complex". She was very shallow, and her rationalization were simplistic. She doesn't make "good points"; she makes evasions and excuses.

Sometimes I feel I can understand why her sister Jessica hated her so much, while nearly forgiving the even more fanatic Unity. Unity was tormented by love and hate or other extreme feelings of human beings, but Diana always had this kind of fully-grown-up easiness and confidence, as if other people's suffering was not seen or cared by her. As for her ideology, well, I think it's a little bit similar to communism -- it's not extremely terrible if you believed in it when you were young, but there's definitely going to be SERIOUS PROBLEMS with you if you stick on it for whole life.
Very intelligent and beautiful woman. Even name drops Solschenizyn and several interesting books that give great perspectives on the contemporary view of Hitler and German politics.
She is unashamedly an imperialist, i. e against self determination for countries formerly a part of the British Empire and glosses over all the countries invaded by nazi Germany, several of which were neutral. The greatness of Churchill was that, although he was regrettably an imperialist, he found it more important to defeat Hitler than to keep the empire.
@Diana Mitford You seem to have forgotten that that "colonization" was to happen by killing the people who lived there and replacing them with Germans. Churchill had no myopia, he saw Hitler for who he was, based on excellent information, and knew it would take a war to defeat him. The myopia, or rather ignorance, was all on the Moseleys' side. If Churchill had one main fault (he was just a human being, faults, warts and all, not a saint) , it was that he too was an imperialist. But he was willing to give up the empire in order to defeat Nazism. That alone made him an infinitely greater man than your precious fascist couple. Also, why do you name yourself after such a despicable person? Were you taken in by her pretty words and upper class accent?
@Diana Mitford Also, one of the main goals of British foreign policy has always been to maintain a balance of power on the continent, to prevent one country from gaining the upper hand. Nazi Germany was obviously upsetting that balance. It was also in Britain's personal interest to limit Germany's power.
@Diana Mitford I now understand why you rake on the name of this despicable woman: your own views are as despicable as hers. You are defending genocide. That is a crazy view. Also the Mosleys are a clear example of what's wrong with having an aristocracy : it gives status to people who have done nothing to deserve it and in this case are in fact people who did terrible things.
@Diana Mitford I already knew that Churchill was a descendant of the original duke of Marlborough. This one example proves nothing. Also, Churchill's outstanding work was as a politician, not as a general, nir did he ever hold that rank.
@Diana Mitford I've never read more than a few pages of Wodehouse. I just think that inbreeding, which is what you propose, is bad and that genetics only play a partial role in human achievements. Both these views are supported by science. Also, people inherit only part of their parents' genes, so they can inherit bad ones as well. Also, if a society creates fairly equal opportunities for all, plenty of people move from the bottom of society to the top and the other way around. As an example, just look at all those self-made billionaires in the US or, as a specific example closer to home, John Major.
Rare Books sums it up. below. She was an absolute stunner in her day as you can see from her beauty in this interview. Most people can't get past her accent but if you can then listen carefully to what she says. Anyone who knows anything about Mosley or Hitler will tell you they put England's interest first. Shame no politician can be as honest these days.
@@moonhaze8332 I pass by a lot of "racially pure" drug addicts begging on the streets on my way to work each day, so I don't think racial purity is at work here. Perhaps instead, her elegance is due to her having received a privileged upbringing in a different era.

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen a more beautiful women at her age here. Stunning! Beautiful!
She was a rabid Fascist - & that's UGLY.

This woman is a true beauty. Her politics not withstanding. As I listen to her, it is obvious that each of us can justify what we believe and what actions we take in following those beliefs.
Even as an older woman, Diana was still a beauty.
Philip Thompson My first thought was, "my Lord how old is she?? She is just stunning!!" Some of our US celebs should give up the knife and find out her beauty routine. .
Yeah she looked great Sandie Benedum. She was in her late 60's at the time.
Philip Thompson Late 60's, that just leaves me speechless. I hope I am able to look even 1/4 as pretty as she looks :)
Lol so do I Sandi Benedum
Philip Thompson Not "older": OLD. I find her looks just a bit disturbing, but not nearly as disturbing as her hauteur, her self-deception, and her obliviousness.
And we thought the Queen was posh lol
That's because her family are not real British Aristocrats, she's German descent Saxe-Coburg and Gotha they turned up in the early 18th Century the Georges 1, 2 & 3. The real British Aristos can trace their lines back to the Plantagenets and earlier Medieval families and the Normans. Queen Lizzies an incomer!! I saw a BBC programme once about old English families they had an old school aristo who said she considered Queen Elizabeth middle class!!

A bit chilling that she doesn't have an ounce of remorse about her affiliation and outright admiration of Hitler. She is certainly a compelling figure, I'll admit.
She is not one to be sentimental and emotional. She is a Gemini!
alot went on that you have no idea about. you keep reading your Official histories.
Absolutely stunningly beautiful...
And?
Interesting interview and insight into time at war
Elocution, deportment, wit and restraint. All that is serious lacking in women today.
yes she is ,beautiful, and Rather posh, love her
Shallow, entitled, superior, slightly delusional...if anyone else says these things without the 'posh' they are cut down like weeds.

Faschinating ; ) This woman was NO fool. No way were you going to misquote her.

I got sort of scared while watching her eyes and face. Somehow out of this world and, yes, "icy". I could not have talked to her without being confused by that...

Beautiful, articulate, classy and disgusting, all at the same time
Her view of history is totally skewed. But still she’s a beautiful woman; and the way she holds herself and the way she speaks is totally mesmerizing.
It was, almost as much as skewed Churchill's
billy giles Please...
This world deserves what it gets if it won’t learn from very clear historical examples of how not to be/act/live/think.

dekubaner She was not "complex".

This is a beautiful old lady.
As with the Oswald Mosely interview I've seen. Demonise demonise demonise. And it fails.

Exquisite quote
Very intelligent and beautiful woman. Even name drops Solschenizyn and several interesting books that give great perspectives on the contemporary view of Hitler and German politics.
A beautiful lady with an ab.fab stylish english way of speach . Great grand niece Stella Tennant looks like her .
Thank you.
