I love how in this episode everyone was just so excited to talk to him. Like Alanah, Mike, and Austin were all jumping over each other to ask him questions (in a good way).
That's how you honestly know that someone is still insanely passionate about something. I've been part of my hobby for over half of my life at this point but the chance to talk to someone who is just starting out or is just getting interested in genuinely one of the most exciting things possible.
There's something highly entertaining about a full panel that is comprised of "I......HOW DID????" and there being a ton of great answers for each question. Happy for Abubakar on his delivery and success. Can't wait to pick this up myself.
Abubakar is such an inspiration. Growing up I dreamed of being in the voice over or video game industry in some capacity, but was told quite often I could never do it for x reason - he took that and ran with it, said “let me show you what I can do basically” when I sort of just.. cowered away from it and went with what society and the people around me expected. I have so much respect for him, being so open during the whole process, sharing his story and experiences. It’s moving to see. 💜
This is such a refreshing video. Abubakar is extremely open and clear about the process, sacrifices and more that went into the game. It’s rare to have such clarity. I was on the fence to be honest, but I want to support him and his team to make more games, there is clearly so much passion there. Good luck.
Saw Abu on Raised by Wolves and then SoB and GCNs Haunted City. Game was an instant buy for me just to support one of my favorite creatives, but it looks legitimately great. Congratulations Abu! Great episode.
Very inspiring story, I've been wanting to get into the games industry for a while, but I struggle with actually DOING the things I need to get there. Blows my mind that he pulled this off.
but HOW? - this was really a fantastic podcast and Abubakar has such amazing drive and insight! This was a really informative episode! Thank you guys! Can't wait to play this game to support his studio! 🥰
I find it funny that this new channel already has almost 200 or 2000 subscribers already and and I just heard about this so I am now glad that I am subscribed to the new Play, Watch, Listen channel. I will always be a big supporter of this podcast and every podcast that Miss Pierce makeswithout a doubt.
I think a lot of times giving advice doesn't really work. Like for many successful people in whatever field, if you look at their life you see that a series of events, circumstances, and personality traits led them to where they are now and others can't really replicate it. The "just start doing it" mentality came to them naturally as a result of their circumstances where they felt they could and should and did do it. If you can afford to go just do it and afford to fail and learn over and over, that's great. But that's a privilege that many don't have and I think this should be talked about to when giving advice too.
Played a few hours since it's on PS Extra, it's a good game, beautiful visuals, smooth fast combat, definitely value for money. Kinda bad timing with Prince Of Persia Lost Crown, but on the other hand it may help the game since people who liked PoP may search for something similar.
This was refreshing to hear. I sold my house last year to fund my dexterity game that is still in the works. When you want to create something, you just gotta go do it. Great watch.
Well clearly now the next step is to make the video game sequel.. in the finest tradition of Richard b Riddick.. I'm sure he'll do fine... and is right away working on this very important task!
Hilarious that I JUST now got a recommendation for Play, Watch, Listen after watching your video about why you removed it from the main channel. This whole time I just assumed it was on hiatus.
Ah yis, Raised by Wolves! So that's where I know Abubakar from, I only remembered that he played some kind of plastic dude, but I kept thinking a Ken in Barbie. Too bad the show was canceled, it was so unique and still had so much lore to tell!
This episode is such a good pairing with the Friends Per Second episode with the Abubakar interview. Cool to hear him talk about his game before and after release
Alanah, do let Mr Salim know that I absolutely loved his performance as Bayek in AC Origins. Bayek imo is one of the most nuanced and tragic protagonists the series has had since Ezio. His performance truly conveyed the sense of profound loss & a fractured marriage with his wife since their family tragedy 😢 I yearn to see more Bayek tales in AC but alas Ubi being Ubi 😵
Hello from months in the future! Abubakar looks like decent fellow. And IMO he comes from a genuine place, especially with everything said on this podcast. Heck I didn't even know about all the controversy that went on up until googling the game after listening to this podcast. I am a Dev myself (Technical Animator/Rigger), have been laid off twice in less than a span of a year - by two different companies who I was unlucky enough to be part of when they both were hit with the redundancy situation. I want to bring up the SBI controversy as a question/opinion/guess. I too would like to make a game - start my own small indie project. Looking for inspiration is what led me to finding this exact podcast episode the other day. I felt that the gist of the podcast was "Just do it and it can work out somehow, and not be afraid of failure" - yes, I love that sentiment of course. But - passion and drive can only take you so far. Without funding and backing - how can anyone afford to run a 12 person team? I've spoken to a number of acquaintances who have actually tried with smaller teams, and mostly did so unpaid. They even did rounds to join conventions and whatnot in hopes of finding investors, to no avail, hence their game never going off. How was Abubakar able to get EA's interest in the first place? Was the pitch just that good that EA decided - sure we'll give u the funding needed to finish this game? So when I looked into the related controversy - I'm now wondering - was it his connections to key people involved in DEI consultancy that allowed him the opportunity that is not readily available to other people? I'm genuinely asking - apologies if I forgot some details mentioned in the podcast.
Sometimes you’ve got to sit back and wonder how you don’t get more done in a day. Props to this guy for sticking it out. I am just fascinated with how he was able to fund this game, though. All his own money until he could get an EA check? Geez that’s a risk right there…
Im curious if someone could ask Abubakar, how would his process and the work he did have changed if he didnt have the cash to start the process? Would he have bit the bullet for a loan or what?
Well , other stuff that doesn’t have so much soul in it that he develops might lack in comparison but least he got one under the belt and wish him luck
Works at a single IP game dev studio: we know 3 years in advance (what the game looks like). Me: As long as the title is GoW, I think we all know 3 years in advance what the game will look like too.
thought this game did not sell well. last steam all time peak was like 250 or something? has that changed? Has it sold better on console? and Wasnt there a little SBI controversy as well with this one?
Hard to say without hard numbers, budgets etc. But it has a PS+ deal which is both money and will often lead to more sales of indies due to added mindshare where half the battle is getting the game noticed. Podcasts and things like this will help too. But I agree the initial figures don’t look too promising, but we really don’t know.
It was barely marketed. I remember seeing it at the game awards and hadn’t heard about it since. And the SBI stuff is utter nonsense. They’re a consulting company to increase diversity in games. To make stories feel more authentic. Black writers writing black stories, Asian writers writing Asian stories, Brazilian actors playing Brazilian characters. Things like that. Any “controversy” is manufactured by racists who are mad it isn’t white protagonist #1817478582738281847. The game's name is "Tales of Kenzera: Zau"
Watching the beginning and it is strange how they didn't introduce the guest or what game they directed

within the first 5 mins

The story behind this game’s development is wild. Huge props to Abubakar. I love this podcast

Mr. Salim's metaphor of a Metroidvania and grief was amazing.
Man, if Abubakar learns how to compose music, he can start his own Play Watch Listen podcast all by himself.
Abubakar is such an inspiration. The game flopped and the guy cried about it like a little b

It's AC ORIGINS Bayek!! 😁👏
Second best AC protagonist which is actually very high praise!
'the guards here are vigilant'
Abubakar's explanation why it was obviously going to be a Metroidvania is so great 😍. Really phenomenal episode!
What a wonderful episode to launch the channel on.

Abu's vision on why this game had to be a Metroidvania makes so much sense
Love the interview with Abubakar. This got me interested in his game, had no idea it recently released
Love Abubakar's work, and his resilience and righteous stubbornness is monumentally impressive.
If you want to hear more Abu, he’s amazing in Haunted City which is a TTRPG podcast on the Glass Cannon Network.
Naish rise up!
He is Bayek of Siwa, 'the guards here are vigilant'
Love every bit of this conversation. Especially Alanah being focused on specific steps to become a Game Director.
This was a fascinating peak behind the veil.

Yeah, I feel that should be one of the first things they need to say at the beginning of the conversation. Maybe as some sort of disclaimer.
socioeconomics plays a big role. The Sims was originally created as an experiment for the producer's research paper

Abukabar is such a delight. Looking forward to whatever he does next, video games or otherwise
Loved having Abubakar on the podcast! ❤
It was, in fact, a great visual gag.
Another fun episode. Great listen. 👍
He's father in Raised by Wolves! That's wild! props to getting the game wrapped. have the game downloaded and will play it this week.
Wait, the dood from Raised by Wolves made this game? That is fuggn amazing
Indeed it is, Mother.
Dood means death

Genuinely one of the best episodes. Seeing Mentor Mike in action, giving advice and what to do after launching as a director is really cute.
Love the podcast! Leaving a comment to boost the video ❤
He was so good in Raised by Wolves! I'm still so sad there is no season 3

this is the same dude that voiced bayek from assassins creed origins, amazing character.
That was awesome, thank you so much for getting this guy on your show.

Good guest very interesting
This podcast is a Pokemon, each evolution gets better & better
#323 sub (I think)
Found this by chance. How are they starting on episode 151!? That's a crazy number to start a podcast on
Good luck, tho!
😂
Amazing episode, loved hearing from Abubakar!
Lovely interview
Wait until people find out Ezio is now a Take-Two executive.
I apparently only know Abubakar's work from Stray Gods, but he's so charming here that I'll definitively consider playing Tales of Kenzera
I respect you so much. You inspire me to not hide my inner voice
Not a fan of platformers or metroidvanias but I really enjoyed this episode.
Im curious if someone could ask Abubakar, how would his process and the work he did have changed if he didnt have the cash to start the process? Would he have bit the bullet for a loan or what?
my favorite podcast:)
He is very passionate, he's smart and very well versed. I can't think of a reason of why he would need to hire sbi for anything.
Raised by Wolves: The Video Game, When?
Damn, what an amazing dude!

One of the early subscribers to the channel and now one of the early commenters!
Great episode!

Money Mike Bithell.
this game seems really cool but i hate platforms :/ will be wishlisting tho and waiting on the next sale to try it out
Is this a new episode or an old episode? I'm now confused by the channel migration what is new and what is not new
This is a new episode
Perfect video title 😅
Austin has crazy posture wtf

Episode 151. Can we get Mike a proper mic already? Airpods sound like tin cans
And Alanah a new webcam lol
Mike is traveling, based on the background; he's had a nice setup at home for some time now.
Here’s to new beginnings, may your play be strong , your watch be entertaining, and your listen have rhythm.
Bayek!

Austin 55:29 is when you left, so pick up there
please i'm begging the editor level out the audio this is ridiculous
So.. what's the name of the game again? Sorry, non-native english speaker here😅.
