    5:00 this conversation makes me immediately think of Doki Doki Literature Club. How ballsy to make a game look like a dating sim, then twist it in such an immense way. I found out about it later when the twist was already spoiled for me, but imagine being one of the first people to play it. That would freak me out.

    Yeah, I feel a similar way about Undertale. I remember it coming out and I swear within a week or two, it seemed that it instantly had a hardcore fanbase out of nowhere of people who were obsessed with it, and would not shut up about it. I found that a little off putting. Never quite understood it. I mean hell, sometimes I feel sorry for Toby Fox, because he seems to be trapped like James Caan in "Misery", just held hostage at all times by his own die hard fans 😆

    I bounced off of both Outer Wilds and Undertale when I initially played them, but after finishing them they're on top of my games of all time lists and left deep impressions. Don't feel bad about bouncing off, just give them another go if and when you can.
    I actually started a Frostpunk 1 game two days ago (for the nth time) and I'm trying to force my way through it. I'm not good at/don't find myself enjoying city builders OR 4X games but by god I will finish at least one run.

    We're evolutionarily "designed" to be empathy machines for those that we consider to be within "our tribe." The only issue today is how people draw those lines.
    This is why, when you look at people committing atrocities during war and such, the easiest way to turn off empathy for people is to "other" them and dehumanize them. In fact, that seems to be a necessary step in order to turn off empathy for anyone who doesn't have a neurological disorder that mutes empathy.

    The problem with horrifyingly long development times of modern AAA video games is that GTA6 _won't_ give us a study of which game mechanics are currently at the top of the pack - it will give us a study of which game mechanics were at the top of the pack in the second half of the 2010s. And most of the satire on the radio will probably be just as old.

    for frostpunk 2 i think the best analogy is the one with the first game being a survival city builder, the second one being more like a 4X. which means its not really for me, but its commendable that the devs actually went and evolved the formula instead of just making the same game with better visuals and sprinkles on top.

    Thank Goodness You're Here is probably the funniest game I've ever seen. On par with Monkey Island, Jazzpunk or South Park and such. And I'm not even British, so I didn't get all the jokes as it has a TON of Northern English gags. Fantastic voice acting, fab music and their style of animation is so nice. The only gripe I have with it is that navigation inside the game is a bit hit and miss, but you do find a ton more funny shit when you get lost or just trying to figure out where to go next.

      Valve could probably rank in that number, they print money from stuff they don't even have to make and only put out top tier games. Maaaaybe CDPR falls under that, but likely not to the same extent. Epic has the money, but not the interest in new game development in the same way (although they enable tons of games via Unreal).

    7:50 I haven't finished the podcast yet but to my knowledge (which is little) I believe Undertale grew out of the Earthbound/Mother community in which Toby Fox was a well known Fan Game creator. However, I'm pretty sure the EarthBound community is much older than Undertale's, especially at launch. Undertales toxic parts of the Fandom was a result of it being extremely popular with kids and teens, and many of those teens not understanding boundaries or how to healthily engage in a fandom

  • @MultiWar22
    @MultiWar22 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Imma step out of videogames, but this is the tangent podcast anyway, so it's probably fine.
    I think fiction in general could be described as "empathy machines". I have recently read a book series called Malazan: Book of the Fallen. It's very high fantasy, there's SO MUCH batshit crazy stuff in it. There's literally dinosaurs with sword arms. And that doesn't take away ONE BIT from the emotional punch it packs and from how effective it is at making you think and reflect and consider different points of view on a given subject. Like, the author will present a certain theme in MANY facets, and it's just SO good at making you give a shit and potentially understand people in the real world better. Some of the themes the books touch on are compassion, grief, motherhood, brotherhood, loyalty, fanaticism and war, for example (and there are a bunch more). And every single one of these themes is thoroughly explored. Sometimes you might not even notice that you're seeing a different side of a theme you had already seen discussed in the book series, but then someone points it out or you notice it and it's just awesome. It really makes you realize how complex the world is, how different people are and all that, and I think this is valuable.
    But awnyay, my point is: fiction is one of the absolute greatest things we've ever done as a species imo, and I think it's one of the absolute best tools at making people give a shit. There's so much in current society that pushes people into being more individualistic and not concerning themselves with others. And I think stories are SUCH a powerful way of pushing back against that trend. Sure, maybe Malazan or This War of Mine won't make a given person instantly empathetic. But I think it's most likely at least a push in the right direction. It at least plants the seed of caring and of empathy, and I think this is incredible
