We rescued one from the streets of Houston. She was so matted & filthy the people who caught her took her to pug rescue. Plus, the vet said she had just weaned a litter. She isn't a pug, but a beautiful full-blooded Shih Tzu! She is loving, well-behaved & a gift of joy. She rescued us!
I have a similar situation. The owners of my puppy's mommy found her in a junk yard. Mommy was matted covered with paint and had some type of steel rod tangled in her coat. They kept feeding her to gain trust and one day the mommy just jumped into their car! They took her home and got her cleaned up and found out she was pregnant! Mommy had a litter of 6 I believe. And I got the brindle! Not full bred she's mixed with small breed poodle and Chihuahua. But shih tzu is the main breed. And she is the cutest little ball of dynamite!
I rescued one also. I lost her 3 years ago. I've had many dogs of different breeds but never have I missed one like I miss Allie. All dogs are wonderful but there is something about a Shih Tzu! Miss her so much.
My best dog ever! He hunted. He protected. He guarded. He was quiet. He was a close friend. He was patient. He was obedient. He was smart. I would love to have another one.
Mine doesn't acknowledge when he gets called instead he'll go grab a toy first or drink some water then come....just to remind me who owns who in this relationship lol
I also got my shitzu as a Christmas gift 2021. He was born 11/08/21. He’s my baby. He isn’t stubborn at all. I had him completely potty trained to go outside at 3 months. I used potty pads just a few weeks if I had to leave the house and he couldn’t go with me. He knows all the basic commands sit,stay,lay,come,paw,and of course loves to fetch. I am home with him all day and I learned how to groom him myself by watching TH-cam videos. It’s not hard to do. I brush him a minimal 5 times a day. He is the smartest pup I’ve ever had over my 57 years. I love my sweet boy (Chewy)
And very choosy with her food. Put something new in her bowl, she will smell it first and if she doesn’t like it, she will not touch it even if you leave it there the whole day.
All breeds of dogs I've ever seen have times of being stubborn though. I currently have a Shihtzu, a Maltipoo, and a Pomeranian. The Pomeranian is the most stubborn of the group. My shihtzu is the best out of the group with strangers and barks the least.
I have One shes a beauty,i couldnt imagine life without her,she sleeps with me,and snuggles right in, shes great company,always by my side,if i go out for an hour,she goes mad when i come home,shes such a laid back Girl, shes 2 yrs old,i have her cut short in the summer months ,then winter i let her grow like a little teddy bear,i couldnt cope with the grooming of really long hair,teddy bear is enough for me everyday,the Shih Tzu are beautiful dogs
I had Shih Tzu for 13 years, she was my baby. Last spring I took her to the Doctor and I had to have her put to sleep because she had Liver cancer and I had seen her suffer for one week before I took her to Dr. Plus some time earlier I had notice a change in her. I saw my husband suffer for ten years after he had a major stroke, couldn’t walk nor talk. I spent almost everyday with him and I did not want to see my fur baby suffering, so I had to say goodby and let her go. I still think of her and I cry every time. I miss her so much.
My condolences 😢I have to definitely be aware with my dogs health at all times I suffered a loss 5 years ago with my former shih tzu stayed with my daughter until I could move her out of state with me and when I was bringing her with me she had a heart attack on our travel 😢 I still miss her but a friend of mine had a Shih tzu and could no longer take care of her I agree to take her although my friend gave got her good medical attention - now I’m doing the same next month she goes back for her check up I pray she’s still in good health she’s a 4 year old Shih tzu. I have been blessed to have had 8 Shihtzu babies in my lifetime. I have owned several breeds of dogs but I am 71 years old and after having to put our last Shihtzu to sleep due to Lymphoma 😢. I did not think I ever wanted another dog. I rescued a female from a breeder after the Mama Shih tzu had a hernia. Her puppies were fine but the Mama needed surgery for the ruptured hernia and to be spayed. Because she couldn't have puppies anymore the breeder sold the Grey and white 3 year old Mama to me for $300 dollars so long as I paid for the surgery and the spay. She is very anxious and fearful but getting better every day. Her name is Elsa and she loves me so much it makes me 😢 tears of joy. I care for my 78 year old sister who has Alzheimers. It has turned out that my Elsa has in a sense rescued me. 😅
God bless and give you strength. Inlost my beloved husband two years ago. We have a black and white Shih who was a ten year old breeder. After her last litter at the age of ten they dropped her on the I Telnet for adoption and we drove to Texas to get her. She’s 14 now and alll I have. Thank God for Shih Tzus!

I have been blessed to be the mom of 2 Shih-Tzu . The first was a rescue I found at 5 years old he was black and white he lived to be 18. I now have rescued a brown and white male Eddie he is now 4 years old. I love this breed the best little dogs in the world…Eddie is with me all day everyday I go nowhere without my best friend 🐶🐶🐾🥰 we go to school once a week and has made a great therapy dog…
I had 3 shitzue , sandy lived 18 years I kept her in a long coat, mindy her sister lived 17 years, the first flutter lived 12 years, I miss them, I have Lilly she is 3 years, they all are so clever, I would never get a different kind of dog, they are great companions. Margaret Redmond from Ireland
I bought a Aso puppy then the next month bought a female Shitzue for him. She had a litter of six but five died at two months from an out break of parvo. They were heartbroken over the loss but we managed to save one. She then had another litter of six but one died at four days due to complications. They were so happy to have this litter i could not separate them so now have 8 . Have been offered as much as $2k for one of them but would not sell any of them for any price as they are so happy together as a family.
Hello Margaret, Do you make food for them ? If so, what kind and how you cook them. Also, how do you handle more than one shih tzu ? I have one male and I'd like to add a brother because he stays at home most of the time. Thank you for your advice 🙂
Had two at different times, I loved both of them. One who died at 13 “ruled” my life, he was the Alpha dog. I miss him and hope to see him and all the others, over the Rainbow Bridge someday.
We rescued one off the streets of Oklahoma City where she was apparently dumped. She looked like a rag mop with tons of knots. We named her Wander, appropriately. It took her a full year to be secure enough for her to be herself and then her total Shih Tzu character came out. She gave us so much love for three and a half years until she was stricken with a rare blood disorder and passed within a few days. We couldn't have asked for a better family member. Miss her so much every day.
So sorry. We too had a beautiful momma dog, raised her from birth. Happy go lucky, loved her babies dearly. One day she just started peeing blood. It was so sad, cause she was running around, wagging her tail. The vet said he'd heard of it, but in his 30+ years of practice, had never had a patient w/it. He said by early evening she'd be gone and she was. My husband buried her just as the sun was setting and my son played "I'll follow the sun" by the Beatles and the whole family seven of us cried.
My best friend was a Shih Tzu/Pekingese mix named Mei Mei. She went most places with me. She’s been gone for 10 years now but I haven’t gotten over her loss. She was loving, obedient (mostly) but could be stubborn sometimes. For instance, if she decided her walk was long enough, she would lie down and refuse to go any further. It was either drag her or pick her up. Guess which I chose? Yes, she had me trained very well. For several years I kept her coat long with a top knot. We then went shorter, keeping a little top knot, before we went full puppy cut……… gosh, I miss her so much.
This sounds like my Mei Mei, whose legal name is Mei Ling. Except mine has no Pekingese in her, just Shih Tzu. Mine will NOT kiss humans, although she loves soaking up the attention from us. She prefers a chest or lap to sleep on, rather than cuddling with feet. Each and every Shih Tzu I have cared for either as a breeder, or an owner, has their own personality. This is why when picking a companion for their family, I tell people: choose based on how their personality will fit with your family...rather than by looks. Shih Tzus coat colors will often change dramatically between birth and their passing (often not looking AT ALL like the same dog)...just like our own hair does. I would also encourage any potential owners to factor all costs associated with healthy pet ownership (Veterinary bills/immunizations, food, treats, bedding, grooming supplies, etc...) BEFORE purchasing a new puppy, whether that's a Shih Tzu or not. Those costs add up FAST and cutting corners should definitely be avoided at all costs with this breed!
I adopted a 11 month old untrained shih tzu, silver brindle, 4 months ago. He is loving, fun, and a quick learner. I adore him as I did my black over white that I had for 14 years. I just love the shih tzu bread.
I have had 7 Shihtzu babies. ❤ I wouldn't have any other breed after having these fur babies. I now have a Grey & white 4 yr old female rescue. She had been bred repeatedly and developed a hernia which needed repair. She had not been socialized and does not trust men but she is loving, smart and playful. She is my shadow and sleeps with me. She actually hugs me. She is a picky eater though and does have breathing difficulties! She doesn't do tricks like all my others that I got as puppies. I've had for a year now. I think it's sinful that breeders ask 2 to 3 thousand dollars for these female puppies!
Great video. I was gifted a 5 year old Shih Tzu from a friend just over 2 years ago now. I hadn't had a pooch for 20 years because my health can be really poop. But OMG, taking him was the best thing I've ever done. He's beautiful, friendly, and so so loyal with a default setting of 'totally loveable'. He's amazing with all other dogs, people and wildlife we meet on our outings, he's so good that he doesn't have a lead and walks very close to me. I'd never considered a Shih Tzu as a companion, but I think fate has brought us together as it turned out that I am in fact his 5th owner! Why anyone would ever want to part with this sweet, adorable little love is beyond me.
I have one and we can’t love her more! She’s very smart and easy to train! She know lots of words and short frases. My favorite thing that she does is how she obeys the command asking her to say Good Night to her Papa and Aunt. She goes up to them and reaches for their knees and bows her head waiting for head petting and getting lifted up for hugs and kisses. Then she happily prances and shakes her booty all the way to her bed, where she sleeps all night. ❤️🥰💕😘
My daughter found a black and white Shih Tzu roaming around her apartment complex. She called me to ask if I wanted the dog because she already had two and that was the limit she could have living there. She tried to find the owner for over a month, but to no avail so I took the dog. I already had a pug and had never owned a Shih Tzu, but let me tell you, I adore this dog! The vet thinks he was about 4 years old when he was found. He is full-bred and the most wonderful dog ever! He never barks except in the morning when he wakes up to tell me and his brother (the pug) good morning! He is SO well-behaved, never bothers anything (like chewing up stuff), and was fully house trained when I got him! When I brought him home he wouldn't get on any of the furniture and would just lie on the floor, although my pug would be on the sofa with me. I had to slowly teach him over a few months that it was fine to get on the sofas. He follows me everywhere and is always lying by my side wherever I am because he loves to cuddle and be loved on! He loves his toys and sometimes will fall asleep in the middle of a pile of toys after he has spread them out everywhere! This little 11 pound guy is just the best and has definitely made me a forever fan of this breed! I love him and my pug to pieces and cannot imagine life without either one of them! Funny thing, they are both the same age ~ 8 years old now!
I have a moody grumpy shihtzu, but still he guarded me as a king. Whenever somebody closes to me he will stand up and growl like a rothwieler. He'S my bodyguard and best buddy.
I had bought an Aso at two months and following month bought a Shitsu being a month younger and less than half his size. From the first day she let him know she is the Alpha and she is the boss. They love each other so much and also love all six of their babies. I had two Aso's before them and they both lived to the age of 22 years.
My daughter found our shih tuz running down a residential street in June of 2013. I had never seen a shih tzu before. I didn’t even know what breed she was a first. It’s been nine years and I am in love with Molly. She’s elderly now and has really slowed down but I adore her. She is my doggie soulmate. Some day I will get another shih tzu after Molly passes away. They are wonderful, loyal dogs. I live in Texas and summers are 100 degrees or more. I only let Molly stay outside for five minutes and then I bring her inside and make sure she can drink some water. They definitely do better inside in the summer.
I have a Shi Tzu female, Gracie and I’m still after 7 years under her tutoring and I, not a dog lover,absolutely love her and I don’t know what I’ll do when she dies, I got her from the SPCA when she was 9, and she has been my service animal for 7 years now and she got out of my sight once many years ago and I literally panicked until I found her again, I dread her passing away because I have become not only attached to her but she is my baby girl and my best friend and the only family I have! She is definitely a very smart and patient girl! I’m so blessed to have been able to be with her and she’s been the only thing that kept me alive and kept me from hurting other people (I’m a veteran of the 101st Airborne Infantry and I got her to help my ptsd), because she is so good for me, I even call her mommy at times!
@@dontask7844 be attentive and above all else groom the dog, I literally mean it brushing is a requirement daily and they are not cheap to get a haircut for, my Gracie is $180 for a cut, but I absolutely love her
I have my full blood Shti zu from a puppy. Thank you both for your Service. I'm so grateful for all of you. My Pokey baby is smart and took care of his Golden Retriever here till recently we lost him in an accident. Now I have time to enjoy 😌 and my goodness all the comforting from this little puppy. He's so Wonderful! Great to carry ❤️
I am not surprised that so many of the shih tzus are named Gracie. Our darling Gracie came from the dog pound. She was very pregnant (had three puppies seven days after we rescued her.) We named her Gracie because it was the grace of God that we found her. She was not at a humane society. She was with us 12 years--we don't know exactly how old she was when we got her but we adopted a beautiful, sweet, loving, lovable dog and now her son, Joey. I believe animals are a gift from God.
I have a 6 yr old Shih Tzu mix(Bingo) who happened to be a rescue. He is the sweetest fun living dog. He love his morning walks, his daily park trips. He loves other dogs and people especially kids. He will play for hrs but this puppers love the sun lmao. He will go outside and sunbath but he will heat up pretty quickly on his activities and I’ll have to carry him home lmao. I strongly recommend everyone getting a Shih Tzu & especially a rescue.
I am a dog groomer. The MOST important thing for your dog is EVERYTHING. Their dental, emotional, physical care, their food, clean water bowls… don’t get a dog if you’re just going to buy it the cheapest food and a couple toys. They need to be cleaned every 2-3 months, by a groomer who has shampoos and conditioners, and work with your own individual dogs needs. I recommend going to your vet and getting your dog groomed regularly. What would happen if we didn’t clean our bodies? Do your research on your breed and it’s needs, not just get a dog cuz your kid wants one or you’re lonely. Best of luck to you all!
Work with a vet for your dogs own individual breed needs and medication if needed. Do your research, they can get expensive fast and it’s not fair to put them down because you can’t afford it anymore. Stop the puppy mill supply and demand notion this country has, and if you rly love them, treat them well. Like family, as you would your own children. Educate yourself as much as you can, and good luck!
@celeste marie I didn’t miss a single thing. Nor was my post directed towards any person who commented or posted. It was intended to be exactly as written, to the point. People who don’t work in the pet care industry do not see what we see, especially when dogs aren’t properly cared for. So, as it was written, it was meant only for informative purposes. They’re wonderful animals to have as part of the family, but the actual responsibility goes FAR beyond just putting food in a bowl and maybe walking it. Every aspect of a dogs breed, and care is important. From mental health (toys, keeping them engaged and healthy) to dental, to knowing what to look for long term as they age. Small, medium and large breeds all age VERY differently. If people don’t know certain things, they won’t know unless they’re educated. If we don’t tell people the downsides as well as good sides of owning a dog they may not know what to look for. Therefore, maybe go back over what I’d said again and see it as it was written. And I hope it helps someone to be eager to learn more, as much as they can, about whatever breed they are interested in long term. And apologies to Eric above me. I had 3 ShihTz’s and adopted each one and they were young adults. I’m down to two since 1 passed away recently. My wife and I are still crying our eyes out just thinking of her. She was around 12 years old so now we are down to two but, we have our application in right now for another and we should get her once all is said and done. The one is 17 years old and the other one is around 8 years old. They are the most cuddly,loyal, and best behaved dogs a person could ever want

She hates grooming time. Her fur and nails grow very quickly. She loves to cuddle on the bed. I love her to pieces.

Had our princess for approximately 10 years she was the sweetest of sweet. Separation anxiety was saddening. She could not tolerate protein on a special diet had cysts all over, the best breed ever
We have a 3 yr old Shih Tsu who watches television and responds to the programs with barking if she sees an animal or if someone raises their voice. She’s absolutely hysterical., soo much company. Will always have a Shih Tsu.
I do own one and she is not the first one. My heart is sold to that breed. Best companion dog ever! They are so social and friendly. They don’t have an once of malice in their body. Can you tell I love them? 🥰
Every time I meet another Shih Tzu owner they always say the same: “Why would anyone want anything but a Shih Tzu?” I love mine to pieces! Don’t know what I’d do without her.

@@sylviepilote9804 that is so true I thought that might be the case but when my friend had her she would always go hide from her sister when my friends family brought her by Muffy would run - hide she wasn’t used to going out on walks my friend had only taken her out once in 3 years because she is so sickly - only on car rides grooming, Vets. so I’ve had her now over a year she’s very aggressive specially with other dogs hopefully she’ll get out of her behavior. I just rescued my beloved, 4 yr old Shihtzu, Buddy , 3 months ago & am absolutely in LOVE!! I have never even liked small breed dogs, especially Shihtzu breed, but boy has Buddy proven me wrong & he is the most loving, sweet, gentle, kind boy!! ❤️❤️❤️ my Shihtzu!!
My Buster was 17yrs when he passed in Dec 2021. I miss him 😢 I want a new puppy, but not just yet. Still healing from his loss. My husband & I listened together. We were surprised you didn't mention their temperaments or intelligence. I disagree about guard dog too. They are VERY PROTECTIVE.
We to had a Buster that passed in May 2021. He was 16yrs. Our home was so empty feeling without him, I didn't realize how much love he gave our home until he was gone, 😪. I know the pain you are going through right now, I too needed time, but in November I brought Bucky (8months old now) home and he became our newest family member. From day one he began to heal each us, and filled our home with love that it had with Our Buster. I saw your comment and was thinking it was so close to us that I wanted to share my experience with you.

We adopted a Shih Tzu/Maltese from the humane society where my husband was volunteering…he was a year old and is now 7…don’t know what we would do without him….he demands very little..loves walks and sleeps like a baby…even better…what a blessed companion in our later years…Kathy
My darling little shit tzu mix was adopted from our local shelter. She was picked up wandering around a busy intersection. Her hair was almost gone in spots. Lots of baths soon fixed her up, and she has blesses our house now for four years. Lady was potty trained and someone had fed her at the table. Celebrating her eighth birthday July 2nd.
I have a two year old Shih Tzu, Charlie. I dearly love this little guy, he is the most loving, cuddling dog I have ever had. I have him in a short clip, he has so very much hair and needs grooming every 4 weeks, especially in the summer since we live in a hot summer climate.
I was gifted a Shih tzu 6 months ago. He is the love of my life. I'm a single senior and so glad he's mine. He also seems to be quite smart but can be very stuborn but I wouldn't change a single thing about him if I could. I thank my son and his wife every day

I have a 7 yr old shih tzu. He is a great dog -- never barks, was very easy to housetrain (taught him to ring a bell), is not destructive (no chewing of shoes etc) and is always happy. I bathe and trim him into a puppy cut every 6 weeks -- no grooming needed in between, except keeping area around his eyes clean. Shih Tzus have hair, not fur -- so they do not shed at all and are hypoallergenic. He tries to "talk" to us. He is a bit finicky with food. He wants to please us but does have his own "opinions" and sometimes thinks commands are suggestions. So he can seem stubborn compared to other breeds, but I would compare him to a human toddler. Haha He loves to be with us, whatever we are doing. He loves attention, but also will happily entertain himself with his toys. He's the perfect companion dog.
We’ve been owned by 4 wonderful lil gals. Our latest is a 9 month old, that was born with a liver shunt and Dr. Olson at Virginia Tech Vet school saved her life, she’s a whooping 7 1/2 pounder and such a wonderful lil gal that is stubborn, loving, a picky eater, loves to play, makes you get in the floor with her and a great lil sleeping buddy. Every day with this lil bundle of fur is a Blessing, to those that have lost their lil buddies my heart goes out too, but soon as you can get another cause their all awesome dogs!❤️❤️❤️and they own you, and you need a owner!!!
I adopted a Shihtzu Poodle mix 2 years ago here in Dallas, she is 10 years old. I don’t know the background of where she came from but she has been pleasant to have despite her extreme anxiety at times. She is a lap dog for sure, always wants to be petted and held. I couldn’t imagine life without her

Rescued my Shih Tzu Connor when he was 5y old. He was abandoned in the Fort MacMurray 2016 Wildfire. Connor has been a loyal, entertaining de light and is my first small dog.
My nephew has a Shih Tzu/ Chihuahua, we call it a Shih Uahua. He's a very loving caring little giant, he's about 10 lbs but acts like he's 200 pounds, He bullies their two Mini pinchers all the time. Fortunately he took after a long haired chihuahua and the hair only grows about to that level. His energy is massive, he'll just zoom around for no reason and always down to play, no matter time of day. My nephew named him Gizmo, because when he got him, the noises he made made him think of Gizmo, The Mogwai from gremlins. He's 1.5 years old and still acts like a puppy, more than likely won't ever grow out of it

Yes, I have a black/ grey one, she was rescued with only one eye left from previous owner. I've had her for 2 and a half years now and call her Belle ( short for Tinkerbelle). She previously lived in a house with 106 dogs and has been on television as they televised the rescue. It took her her several weeks to settle in but she has become a very loving companion and often snuggles into to me; love her to bits!

I had a Tzu named Samantha. My best friend and the love of my life. She was 8 weeks old when I got her and 15 yrs, 2 months and 20 days the day I lost her. When I decided to get a dog, it had t be a Shih Tzu. I dont know why, I hadn't had a dog since I was 9 and I never had a Tzu. I counted on having a dog for a good 15 yrs but what I didn't count on was how much I would love her. Its been 4 mos today that she passed away and I'm crying now just thinking about her. I still cant believe shes gone. Best dog I ever had. She followed me around the house and was always ready to go anywhere. I will have another Tzu in time but for now I'll keep Samantha's memory in my heart. My heart still hurts. I miss you SO SO much every day Samantha.
I have 3 little guys. Mine love exercise in the trails. When they were younger until they reached 12 years of age we walk over a mile every day sometimes twice. They live water playing in creek s as well. My oldest is just under 16 now. The other 2 are 15 years of age
I have a wonderful little girl who is 6years old that I adopted a year ago. She is so sweet and well behaved. I got a crate with her and she just thinks it's her safe place. I have one and I love him to bits. He's a bit of a handful at times though and so stubborn, he loves to be outside and it's a nightmare trying to take him home as he knows he's going back inside. If you are thinking of getting one they are lovely dogs but need a lot of attention ,grooming too

We had our shihtzu Oscar for 13 years. He was so healthy and the best companion to us…he did however pick and choose who he liked and didn’t like lol (humans and other dogs). He was diagnosed with a heart murmur two years ago which lead to congestive heart failure after being on 3 different types of meds for the past year. He took his last breaths here at home with me in my arms. I wouldn’t trade the sleepless nights for anything. He was my best little buddy. Just writing this makes me cry. We are going to be welcoming another little shih Tzu boy into our home in the new year. I didn’t plan on getting another puppy so soon but it just kind of happened.❤
My little man is a Gold and White Shih Tzu named Snooby. He turns 13 next month. When he was 2 he had back surgery and has done very well since then. He is the best little buddy. I have allergies to many dogs/cats and I chose him because I am not allergic to his breed. He is the most chill dog I have ever seen, and he loved the hot AZ weather when we lived there for many years. He is my life and I hope he is around for a long time to come. They are definitely an amazing little breed!! We own 7 Shih-Tzu, and they each have their own big personalities as well! All the 10 facts are correct! We keep ours cut short except one and she has a top knot, but her body is short. She is white and tan. They are all different colors and all family. Bred by accident, but they were so cute we kept most of them, and glad we did!

Owned by a much loved 5 year old rescue Little Lion. A visit to a local groomer turned him from a matted, dirty walking mop, to a gorgeous honey colored treasure.Even though it is winter here, he had to have a puppy cut, to get rid off all matting. I plan to let him grow into a teddy cut, but also have brushes and 2 clippers. One for his coat, the other is more suited for paw pads and bottom. our little man.💖

I have a 2 year old lavender girl with blue/green/grey eyes. She is almost fully white and stunning with a long coat! She barks the least out of 4 dogs, and is very mellow 95% of the day. Then she likes to get super hyper and spunkie and do little zippies around chasing the dogs and barking about once or twice a day for about 5-10 mins. She is the best walker on a leash out of all the dogs too, but won't last more than 30 mins in the heat. She does this cute purring sound when she wants something really bad. She looks and sounds like a Persian cat. She is very strong and robust, and isn't destructive at all, except she digs the area she likes to lay down at, and that isn't good if it's furniture. I highly recommend this breed.👍🏻
We rescued one from the streets of Houston. She was so matted & filthy the people who caught her took her to pug rescue. Plus, the vet said she had just weaned a litter. She isn't a pug, but a beautiful full-blooded Shih Tzu! She is loving, well-behaved & a gift of joy. She rescued us!

I have a similar situation. The owners of my puppy's mommy found her in a junk yard. Mommy was matted covered with paint and had some type of steel rod tangled in her coat. They kept feeding her to gain trust and one day the mommy just jumped into their car! They took her home and got her cleaned up and found out she was pregnant! Mommy had a litter of 6 I believe. And I got the brindle! Not full bred she's mixed with small breed poodle and Chihuahua. But shih tzu is the main breed. And she is the cutest little ball of dynamite!

I also got my shitzu as a Christmas gift 2021. He was born 11/08/21. He’s my baby. He isn’t stubborn at all. I had him completely potty trained to go outside at 3 months. I used potty pads just a few weeks if I had to leave the house and he couldn’t go with me. He knows all the basic commands sit,stay,lay,come,paw,and of course loves to fetch. I am home with him all day and I learned how to groom him myself by watching TH-cam videos. It’s not hard to do. I brush him a minimal 5 times a day. He is the smartest pup I’ve ever had over my 57 years. I love my sweet boy (Chewy)
And very choosy with her food. Put something new in her bowl, she will smell it first and if she doesn’t like it, she will not touch it even if you leave it there the whole day.

All breeds of dogs I've ever seen have times of being stubborn though. I currently have a Shihtzu, a Maltipoo, and a Pomeranian. The Pomeranian is the most stubborn of the group. My shihtzu is the best out of the group with strangers and barks the least.

I had Shih Tzu for 13 years, she was my baby. Last spring I took her to the Doctor and I had to have her put to sleep because she had Liver cancer and I had seen her suffer for one week before I took her to Dr. Plus some time earlier I had notice a change in her. I saw my husband suffer for ten years after he had a major stroke, couldn’t walk nor talk. I spent almost everyday with him and I did not want to see my fur baby suffering, so I had to say goodby and let her go. I still think of her and I cry every time. I miss her so much.
My condolences 😢I have to definitely be aware with my dogs health at all times I suffered a loss 5 years ago with my former shih tzu stayed with my daughter until I could move her out of state with me and when I was bringing her with me she had a heart attack on our travel 😢 I still miss her but a friend of mine had a Shih tzu and could no longer take care of her I agree to take her although my friend gave got her good medical attention - now I’m doing the same next month she goes back for her check up I pray she’s still in good health she’s a 4 year old Shih tzu. I have been blessed to have had 8 Shihtzu babies in my lifetime. I have owned several breeds of dogs but I am 71 years old and after having to put our last Shihtzu to sleep due to Lymphoma 😢. I did not think I ever wanted another dog. I rescued a female from a breeder after the Mama Shih tzu had a hernia. Her puppies were fine but the Mama needed surgery for the ruptured hernia and to be spayed. Because she couldn't have puppies anymore the breeder sold the Grey and white 3 year old Mama to me for $300 dollars so long as I paid for the surgery and the spay. She is very anxious and fearful but getting better every day. Her name is Elsa and she loves me so much it makes me 😢 tears of joy. I care for my 78 year old sister who has Alzheimers. It has turned out that my Elsa has in a sense rescued me. 😅

After her last litter at the age of ten they dropped her on the I Telnet for adoption and we drove to Texas to get her. She’s 14 now and alll I have. Thank God for Shih Tzus!

I bought a Aso puppy then the next month bought a female Shitzue for him. She had a litter of six but five died at two months from an out break of parvo. They were heartbroken over the loss but we managed to save one. She then had another litter of six but one died at four days due to complications. They were so happy to have this litter i could not separate them so now have 8 . Have been offered as much as $2k for one of them but would not sell any of them for any price as they are so happy together as a family.

We rescued one off the streets of Oklahoma City where she was apparently dumped. She looked like a rag mop with tons of knots. We named her Wander, appropriately. It took her a full year to be secure enough for her to be herself and then her total Shih Tzu character came out. She gave us so much love for three and a half years until she was stricken with a rare blood disorder and passed within a few days. We couldn't have asked for a better family member. Miss her so much every day.

So sorry. We too had a beautiful momma dog, raised her from birth. Happy go lucky, loved her babies dearly. One day she just started peeing blood. It was so sad, cause she was running around, wagging her tail. The vet said he'd heard of it, but in his 30+ years of practice, had never had a patient w/it. He said by early evening she'd be gone and she was. My husband buried her just as the sun was setting and my son played "I'll follow the sun" by the Beatles and the whole family seven of us cried.
A big piece of our hearts went with Maggie that day. .it's just so hard to loose a loved one.😢😢😢

My best friend was a Shih Tzu/Pekingese mix named Mei Mei. She went most places with me. She’s been gone for 10 years now but I haven’t gotten over her loss. She was loving, obedient (mostly) but could be stubborn sometimes. For instance, if she decided her walk was long enough, she would lie down and refuse to go any further. It was either drag her or pick her up. Guess which I chose? Yes, she had me trained very well. For several years I kept her coat long with a top knot. We then went shorter, keeping a little top knot, before we went full puppy cut……… gosh, I miss her so much.

This sounds like my Mei Mei, whose legal name is Mei Ling. Except mine has no Pekingese in her, just Shih Tzu. Mine will NOT kiss humans, although she loves soaking up the attention from us. She prefers a chest or lap to sleep on, rather than cuddling with feet. Each and every Shih Tzu I have cared for either as a breeder, or an owner, has their own personality. This is why when picking a companion for their family, I tell people: choose based on how their personality will fit with your family...rather than by looks. Shih Tzus coat colors will often change dramatically between birth and their passing (often not looking AT ALL like the same dog)...just like our own hair does. I would also encourage any potential owners to factor all costs associated with healthy pet ownership (Veterinary bills/immunizations, food, treats, bedding, grooming supplies, etc...) BEFORE purchasing a new puppy, whether that's a Shih Tzu or not. Those costs add up FAST and cutting corners should definitely be avoided at all costs with this breed!
My shih tzu does the same thing. She also does it when she comes back to cold floors from a sunny walk. Had to drag her into the elevator xD

I adopted a 11 month old untrained shih tzu, silver brindle, 4 months ago. He is loving, fun, and a quick learner. I adore him as I did my black over white that I had for 14 years. I just love the shih tzu bread.
I have had 7 Shihtzu babies. ❤ I wouldn't have any other breed after having these fur babies. I now have a Grey & white 4 yr old female rescue. She had been bred repeatedly and developed a hernia which needed repair. She had not been socialized and does not trust men but she is loving, smart and playful. She is my shadow and sleeps with me. She actually hugs me. She is a picky eater though and does have breathing difficulties! She doesn't do tricks like all my others that I got as puppies. I've had for a year now. I think it's sinful that breeders ask 2 to 3 thousand dollars for these female puppies!
Great video. I was gifted a 5 year old Shih Tzu from a friend just over 2 years ago now. I hadn't had a pooch for 20 years because my health can be really poop. But OMG, taking him was the best thing I've ever done. He's beautiful, friendly, and so so loyal with a default setting of 'totally loveable'. He's amazing with all other dogs, people and wildlife we meet on our outings, he's so good that he doesn't have a lead and walks very close to me. I'd never considered a Shih Tzu as a companion, but I think fate has brought us together as it turned out that I am in fact his 5th owner! Why anyone would ever want to part with this sweet, adorable little love is beyond me.
I have one and we can’t love her more! She’s very smart and easy to train! She know lots of words and short frases. My favorite thing that she does is how she obeys the command asking her to say Good Night to her Papa and Aunt. She goes up to them and reaches for their knees and bows her head waiting for head petting and getting lifted up for hugs and kisses. Then she happily prances and shakes her booty all the way to her bed, where she sleeps all night. ❤️🥰💕😘

My daughter found a black and white Shih Tzu roaming around her apartment complex. She called me to ask if I wanted the dog because she already had two and that was the limit she could have living there. She tried to find the owner for over a month, but to no avail so I took the dog. I already had a pug and had never owned a Shih Tzu, but let me tell you, I adore this dog! The vet thinks he was about 4 years old when he was found. He is full-bred and the most wonderful dog ever! He never barks except in the morning when he wakes up to tell me and his brother (the pug) good morning! He is SO well-behaved, never bothers anything (like chewing up stuff), and was fully house trained when I got him! When I brought him home he wouldn't get on any of the furniture and would just lie on the floor, although my pug would be on the sofa with me. I had to slowly teach him over a few months that it was fine to get on the sofas. He follows me everywhere and is always lying by my side wherever I am because he loves to cuddle and be loved on! He loves his toys and sometimes will fall asleep in the middle of a pile of toys after he has spread them out everywhere! This little 11 pound guy is just the best and has definitely made me a forever fan of this breed! I love him and my pug to pieces and cannot imagine life without either one of them! Funny thing, they are both the same age ~ 8 years old now!
I have a moody grumpy shihtzu, but still he guarded me as a king. Whenever somebody closes to me he will stand up and growl like a rothwieler. He'S my bodyguard and best buddy.
I had bought an Aso at two months and following month bought a Shitsu being a month younger and less than half his size. From the first day she let him know she is the Alpha and she is the boss. They love each other so much and also love all six of their babies. I had two Aso's before them and they both lived to the age of 22 years.

My daughter found our shih tuz running down a residential street in June of 2013. I had never seen a shih tzu before. I didn’t even know what breed she was a first. It’s been nine years and I am in love with Molly. She’s elderly now and has really slowed down but I adore her. She is my doggie soulmate. Some day I will get another shih tzu after Molly passes away. They are wonderful, loyal dogs. I live in Texas and summers are 100 degrees or more. I only let Molly stay outside for five minutes and then I bring her inside and make sure she can drink some water. They definitely do better inside in the summer.
I have a Shi Tzu female, Gracie and I’m still after 7 years under her tutoring and I, not a dog lover,absolutely love her and I don’t know what I’ll do when she dies, I got her from the SPCA when she was 9, and she has been my service animal for 7 years now and she got out of my sight once many years ago and I literally panicked until I found her again, I dread her passing away because I have become not only attached to her but she is my baby girl and my best friend and the only family I have! She is definitely a very smart and patient girl! I’m so blessed to have been able to be with her and she’s been the only thing that kept me alive and kept me from hurting other people (I’m a veteran of the 101st Airborne Infantry and I got her to help my ptsd), because she is so good for me, I even call her mommy at times!

I am not surprised that so many of the shih tzus are named Gracie. Our darling Gracie came from the dog pound. She was very pregnant (had three puppies seven days after we rescued her.) We named her Gracie because it was the grace of God that we found her. She was not at a humane society. She was with us 12 years--we don't know exactly how old she was when we got her but we adopted a beautiful, sweet, loving, lovable dog and now her son, Joey. I believe animals are a gift from God.
I have a 6 yr old Shih Tzu mix(Bingo) who happened to be a rescue. He is the sweetest fun living dog. He love his morning walks, his daily park trips. He loves other dogs and people especially kids. He will play for hrs but this puppers love the sun lmao. He will go outside and sunbath but he will heat up pretty quickly on his activities and I’ll have to carry him home lmao. I strongly recommend everyone getting a Shih Tzu & especially a rescue.
I am a dog groomer. The MOST important thing for your dog is EVERYTHING. Their dental, emotional, physical care, their food, clean water bowls… don’t get a dog if you’re just going to buy it the cheapest food and a couple toys. They need to be cleaned every 2-3 months, by a groomer who has shampoos and conditioners, and work with your own individual dogs needs. I recommend going to your vet and getting your dog groomed regularly. What would happen if we didn’t clean our bodies? Do your research on your breed and it’s needs, not just get a dog cuz your kid wants one or you’re lonely. Best of luck to you all!
Work with a vet for your dogs own individual breed needs and medication if needed. Do your research, they can get expensive fast and it’s not fair to put them down because you can’t afford it anymore. Stop the puppy mill supply and demand notion this country has, and if you rly love them, treat them well. Like family, as you would your own children. Educate yourself as much as you can, and good luck!
@celeste marie I didn’t miss a single thing. Nor was my post directed towards any person who commented or posted. It was intended to be exactly as written, to the point. People who don’t work in the pet care industry do not see what we see, especially when dogs aren’t properly cared for. So, as it was written, it was meant only for informative purposes. They’re wonderful animals to have as part of the family, but the actual responsibility goes FAR beyond just putting food in a bowl and maybe walking it. Every aspect of a dogs breed, and care is important. From mental health (toys, keeping them engaged and healthy) to dental, to knowing what to look for long term as they age. Small, medium and large breeds all age VERY differently. If people don’t know certain things, they won’t know unless they’re educated. If we don’t tell people the downsides as well as good sides of owning a dog they may not know what to look for. Therefore, maybe go back over what I’d said again and see it as it was written. And I hope it helps someone to be eager to learn more, as much as they can, about whatever breed they are interested in long term. And apologies to Eric above me. I had 3 ShihTz’s and adopted each one and they were young adults. I’m down to two since 1 passed away recently. My wife and I are still crying our eyes out just thinking of her. She was around 12 years old so now we are down to two but, we have our application in right now for another and we should get her once all is said and done. The one is 17 years old and the other one is around 8 years old. They are the most cuddly,loyal, and best behaved dogs a person could ever want

Shih Tzu can be “pampered”. A purebreed Shih Tzu is a calm, loving, go with the flow type dog.

@@sylviepilote9804 that is so true I thought that might be the case but when my friend had her she would always go hide from her sister when my friends family brought her by Muffy would run - hide she wasn’t used to going out on walks my friend had only taken her out once in 3 years because she is so sickly - only on car rides grooming, Vets. so I’ve had her now over a year she’s very aggressive specially with other dogs hopefully she’ll get out of her behavior. Thanks for clarifying my suspicions!
@@faithdixon6534 I don’t know if you know him (probably) but you should watch Cesar Millan or read his book (if you are “visual” like me, I think you are better off watching his show or simply consult his Website). I just rescued my beloved, 4 yr old Shihtzu, Buddy , 3 months ago & am absolutely in LOVE!! I have never even liked small breed dogs, especially Shihtzu breed, but boy has Buddy proven me wrong & he is the most loving, sweet, gentle, kind boy!! ❤️❤️❤️ my Shihtzu!!
My Buster was 17yrs when he passed in Dec 2021. I miss him 😢 I want a new puppy, but not just yet. Still healing from his loss. My husband & I listened together. We were surprised you didn't mention their temperaments or intelligence. I disagree about guard dog too. They are VERY PROTECTIVE.
We to had a Buster that passed in May 2021. He was 16yrs. Our home was so empty feeling without him, I didn't realize how much love he gave our home until he was gone, 😪. I know the pain you are going through right now, I too needed time, but in November I brought Bucky (8months old now) home and he became our newest family member. From day one he began to heal each us, and filled our home with love that it had with Our Buster. I saw your comment and was thinking it was so close to us that I wanted to share my experience with you.

My darling little shit tzu mix was adopted from our local shelter. She was picked up wandering around a busy intersection. Her hair was almost gone in spots. Lots of baths soon fixed her up, and she has blesses our house now for four years. Lady was potty trained and someone had fed her at the table. Celebrating her eighth birthday July 2nd.

I have a two year old Shih Tzu, Charlie. I dearly love this little guy, he is the most loving, cuddling dog I have ever had. I have him in a short clip, he has so very much hair and needs grooming every 4 weeks, especially in the summer since we live in a hot summer climate.

We have been blessed with owning two and they have given us an abundance of joy and love. I love them dearly.
I have a 7 yr old shih tzu. He is a great dog -- never barks, was very easy to housetrain (taught him to ring a bell), is not destructive (no chewing of shoes etc) and is always happy. I bathe and trim him into a puppy cut every 6 weeks -- no grooming needed in between, except keeping area around his eyes clean. Shih Tzus have hair, not fur -- so they do not shed at all and are hypoallergenic. He tries to "talk" to us. He is a bit finicky with food. He wants to please us but does have his own "opinions" and sometimes thinks commands are suggestions. So he can seem stubborn compared to other breeds, but I would compare him to a human toddler. Haha He loves to be with us, whatever we are doing. He loves attention, but also will happily entertain himself with his toys. He's the perfect companion dog.

We’ve been owned by 4 wonderful lil gals. Our latest is a 9 month old, that was born with a liver shunt and Dr. Olson at Virginia Tech Vet school saved her life, she’s a whooping 7 1/2 pounder and such a wonderful lil gal that is stubborn, loving, a picky eater, loves to play, makes you get in the floor with her and a great lil sleeping buddy. Every day with this lil bundle of fur is a Blessing, to those that have lost their lil buddies my heart goes out too, but soon as you can get another cause their all awesome dogs!❤️❤️❤️and they own you, and you need a owner!!!

I adopted a Shihtzu Poodle mix 2 years ago here in Dallas, she is 10 years old. I don’t know the background of where she came from but she has been pleasant to have despite her extreme anxiety at times. She is a lap dog for sure, always wants to be petted and held. Rescued my Shih Tzu Connor when he was 5y old. He was abandoned in the Fort MacMurray 2016 Wildfire. Connor has been a loyal, entertaining de light and is my first small dog.
My nephew has a Shih Tzu/ Chihuahua, we call it a Shih Uahua. He's a very loving caring little giant, he's about 10 lbs but acts like he's 200 pounds, He bullies their two Mini pinchers all the time. Fortunately he took after a long haired chihuahua and the hair only grows about to that level. His energy is massive, he'll just zoom around for no reason and always down to play, no matter time of day. My nephew named him Gizmo, because when he got him, the noises he made made him think of Gizmo, The Mogwai from gremlins. He's 1.5 years old and still acts like a puppy, more than likely won't ever grow out of it

Yes, I have a black/ grey one, she was rescued with only one eye left from previous owner. I've had her for 2 and a half years now and call her Belle ( short for Tinkerbelle). She previously lived in a house with 106 dogs and has been on television as they televised the rescue. It took her her several weeks to settle in but she has become a very loving companion and often snuggles into to me; love her to bits!

I had a Tzu named Samantha. My best friend and the love of my life. She was 8 weeks old when I got her and 15 yrs, 2 months and 20 days the day I lost her. When I decided to get a dog, it had t be a Shih Tzu. I dont know why, I hadn't had a dog since I was 9 and I never had a Tzu. I counted on having a dog for a good 15 yrs but what I didn't count on was how much I would love her. Its been 4 mos today that she passed away and I'm crying now just thinking about her. I still cant believe shes gone. Best dog I ever had. She followed me around the house and was always ready to go anywhere. I will have another Tzu in time but for now I'll keep Samantha's memory in my heart. My heart still hurts. I miss you SO SO much every day Samantha.
Shih tzu’s are the best breed by far,we have had two more shih tzu puppies who are brothers and adorable ruined beyond belief.

I have a wonderful little girl who is 6years old that I adopted a year ago. She is so sweet and well behaved. I got a crate with her and she just thinks it's her safe place. My son and I have been adopted by our Shih Tzu, Dino. He's so adorable and is the perfect little fellow. He's really brightened up our home. He's so smart. I'd recommend the breed to anyone who loves small dogs. 😊
I have one and I love him to bits. He's a bit of a handful at times though and so stubborn, he loves to be outside and it's a nightmare trying to take him home as he knows he's going back inside.

We had our shihtzu Oscar for 13 years. He was so healthy and the best companion to us…he did however pick and choose who he liked and didn’t like lol (humans and other dogs). He was diagnosed with a heart murmur two years ago which lead to congestive heart failure after being on 3 different types of meds for the past year. He took his last breaths here at home with me in my arms. I wouldn’t trade the sleepless nights for anything. He was my best little buddy. Just writing this makes me cry. We are going to be welcoming another little shih Tzu boy into our home in the new year. I didn’t plan on getting another puppy so soon but it just kind of happened.❤

He is the best little buddy. I have allergies to many dogs/cats and I chose him because I am not allergic to his breed. He is the most chill dog I have ever seen, and he loved the hot AZ weather when we lived there for many years. He is my life and I hope he is around for a long time to come. I love him more than anything.

They are definitely an amazing little breed!! We own 7 Shih-Tzu, and they each have their own big personalities as well! All the 10 facts are correct! We keep ours cut short except one and she has a top knot, but her body is short. She is white and tan. They are all different colors and all family. Bred by accident, but they were so cute we kept most of them, and glad we did!

I currently have 2 Shih Tzu's, but have had four. I've had one with a long coat and the others with a puppy cut, but not too short. I brush them daily. None of these facts were new to me, but this was very well presented.
Owned by a much loved 5 year old rescue Little Lion. A visit to a local groomer turned him from a matted, dirty walking mop, to a gorgeous honey colored treasure.Even though it is winter here, he had to have a puppy cut, to get rid off all matting. I plan to let him grow into a teddy cut, but also have brushes and 2 clippers. One for his coat, the other is more suited for paw pads and bottom. our little man.💖

Ours is a rescue dog Shih Tzu/Cairn Terrior cross. So many facts you list apply to him. He doesn't really care to be outside and loves to be cuddled and pampered.
Our baby Levi is an adorable, sweet, and loving two year old. We got him at seven weeks old. He is the best baby ever! He completed our small happy family. We love him! ❤💜❤ I wish there was a photo option so we could all share pictures of our babies.
I have had 2. I love them. My first one lived 18 yrs !! My son gave me 2nd one last year. 3 yrs after my first one passed. I am 63 so the low exercise and weight is perfect for walking her. I love my Dixie.!!!❤❤❤❤
I have a 2 year old lavender girl with blue/green/grey eyes. She is almost fully white and stunning with a long coat! She barks the least out of 4 dogs, and is very mellow 95% of the day. Then she likes to get super hyper and spunkie and do little zippies around chasing the dogs and barking about once or twice a day for about 5-10 mins. She is the best walker on a leash out of all the dogs too, but won't last more than 30 mins in the heat. She does this cute purring sound when she wants something really bad. She looks and sounds like a Persian cat. She is very strong and robust, and isn't destructive at all, except she digs the area she likes to lay down at, and that isn't good if it's furniture. I highly recommend this breed.👍🏻
