I discovered sixteen years ago that poodles were a good choice for me personally. Having 5 poodles and poodle mixes at one time, these little toy and teacup sized dogs proved to be a joy to have and not hard to train. All but one of those very loved fur babies have passed on now, but I have a new toy poodle puppy who is carrying on the tradition of being my little "bestie." She's great!

I have a big red & white Basenji named Luke. Luke is a rescue dog that was returned to the shelter several times because he was very stuborn and previous adopters had tried to beat the stuborness out of him which of course didn't work and only made him scared and aggressive. He was 2 yrs old when I got him just days before he was to be put down. Luke is a mix breed Basenji and he looks and acts exactly like a pure bred Basenji in every detail but he weighs in at a muscular 115lbs. We have been together for about 10 years now and I am so glad that I took the chance adopting him. I've had 4 other rescues in my adult life and Luke is very special to me and me to him. With a lot of love and trust his early aggressive traits are long gone and we are best buds. We do most everything together and when I have to leave him at home he sits and looks out the window until I get back and always meets me at the door. Luke never smells but he does shed during the spring in Florida. Luke is very quiet and does not or can not bark but he does talk to me when he has something to say. We live on a small farm and Luke rules the property. He is also the seargent at arms at my business and goes to work with me every day.

Schnauzers are also great family members. I was a little surprised you didn't have them as a top breed. They do NOT shed and they are extremely smart. They are also GREAT watch dogs. Mine had a trail all the way around our property making his rounds to make sure nothing tried to get in. He kept squirrels out of the yard (we had a log home and squirrels chew on them), groundhogs, chipmunks or people coming up the driveway. You KNEW when someone was coming. First one was 12 pounds and the other two 22. Daily brushing keeps their coats in good shape between groomings. Rarely did I have to bathe them. I got and she didn’t know ANY commands like sit, etc, she didn’t know how to walk on a leash. She didn’t know how to play and be a dog! So very sad… She is now doing soooo much better. She has life, she prances with excitement, she’s always ready for her leash to take walks, she sits on command for her treats! Lol 😂

FAVORITE: Seriously overlooked is the WIRE-HAIR FOX TERRIER. Having owned two (each for 15 years) over 30 years, I know them well. No shed, bark seldom but will if they sense problem, no odor, love their people, medium activity and play keeps them happy. They are smart and learn obedience well. I love their calico tri-colors and their elegant fur cuts and stance. I love them so much; I tell others, "They're a bit like having a monkey and a 2-year-old. They are so curious and playful. A fun pet.

I have a WHFT and I have to disagree on the no smell, he smells even 2-3 days after a professional groom.
It’s the smelliest dog I have ever owned! My partner cannot smell him but he grew up with the breed and this is his 3rd so I think he is used to their odour.
They are very smart, but they are very stubborn and not people focused when it comes to training. He wasn’t food driven his first 3 years so I found him difficult to engage but from 4y onwards he started being food driven so training him ended up a breeze after that and now he can do all the usual tricks plus ring a bell to let us know when he needs to potty.
I do think you’re right in the way that it’s like having a very naughty monkey and a 2 year old!

I agree with Basenjis being #1. I had a Basenji for 15 years. They shed their winter fur all at once. I’d sit outside in early spring and brush them until their winter fur all came off leaving it’s slightly shorter hair. It could all shed in one day. Then no shedding the rest of the year. They also lick themselves clean like a cat, including their dirty feet. They are exceptionally clean dogs.

Agree with the main part, but want to mention that If you put right clothes in right time+ do not add fish in their diet for tgeit whole life than your basenji won't shed about at all. I've Asthma and major allergy issues. I've had a Maltese for 6 months now, also by accident.
I was babysitting him for my neighbor while she left for surgery and she unfortunately never returned.
He was going to be sheltered and my heart started pounding with tears in my eyes I couldn't believe it, so i took him right on the spot, my allergies haven't acted up nor has my asthma except when the weather gets a little weird.
Also, he's never been a barker even with his previous owner around he has never barked from the moment she got him, whether be it the other neighbors dogs barking, strangers, stuttle noises or thunderstorms he will never bark and he's a very happy pup. the only time he barks is when i ask him to speak then i would reward him, that's it.
I did not plan to have a dog ever, not out of dislike I love them to bits I've just always thought I'm too lazy to be a dog owner.
I told Panda his other momma is gone & had him say goodbye and i promised him i will love him as much for the rest of our lifes. He changed my life for the better ❤.

Yes house training for Yorkies is problematic. I am really surprised that they included that dog in this video for people who want to keep their “apartment clean“. Yorkies are notoriously difficult to housebreak. Because they are smart, they would choose your carpet over outside when it’s raining or snowy for sure. Doesn’t matter how old they are. Basenji's are awesome. As long as you understand they consider you their pet they are simple to manage. Masters of escape and they love to play. If raised with a cat they get along but they are not afraid of anything.

When one becomes a dog owner they become part of the family and you love and cherish them just as you do your children. I lost four puppies this past week to parvo. There is a huge outbreak in the Philippines of parvo. I spent everything the vet required to try to save them. Have two left, one recovering from parvo and somehow the last one never became ill. Will miss the four babies greatly.

We lost our bichon earlier this year which hurts like hell. Now we have a schnoodle ugh. Non shedding schnauzer poodle mix. Very energetic. Jumps off the couch like batman. Tons of energy. Responds well to consistent training. Loves his big sister,pit/boxer mix.70lb. Angel. Calm, easy going, does have a unique odor, sheds lightly, but what a sweet Angel.😉

My very favorite dog breed is the Saluki, which also has NO doggy odor and has the advantage of being smart, elegant and absolutely gorgeous.

    • @david5372
      @david5372 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Salukis are originally bred to chase down -- get ready -- cheetahs! They are very lean, have stamina, and almost like they are put together from spare parts of a greyhound! But they have a long history in the Mid-East as hunters and racers, especially in ancient Egypt. They are loyal, protective, and require a modicum of exercise; you will witness this if they are turned loose in an open area. They vaguely resemble afghan hounds, but without the long luxurious coat....

Ever since watching an old Disney movie about a young boy and a Basenji I immediately knew this was the dog breed for me. Had an opportunity to observe and interact with one for two weeks once; Intelligent, friendly, good with children. Shortly afterwards the owner approached me asking if I would be interested in adopting him. Sadly, my current situation wouldn’t permitted taking him, and I’ve regretted that decision. Purchasing this breed has a hefty price tag and I’ve never scene one as a rescue animal.

I had a Bichon, 3 poodles, a schnauzer, and two Yorkshire Terriers, five Golden Retrievers. Our Beloved Bichon passed away in October 2021. She was 15. Our Soooo loved last poodle passed away 11/24/21 at 16. Our hearts couldn’t be more broken. They all were our children. I could not pick any of the small breeds as a favorite. And they never smelled nor shed. But as for a bigger dog, my beyond favorite are my Goldens. So unbelievably smart. All of them loved the small dogs. I could go on forever about our relationships with all of the pets. But that would have to be a book for each one. Too old to do that.
