- In this video, I’ll show you some of the new changes that will be released in the iOS16 / watchOS 9 coming out in September 2022. I have the public beta installed.
The native workout app found on the Apple Watch has always been a bit lacking where you needed additional apps to try to get close to some of the functions found in Garmin Forerunner. With the latest version of the OS, we finally have CUSTOM WORKOUTS and HEART RATE TRAINING without needing additional apps.
Here I will create a simple 10 & 1 running workout where I will have 10 repeats.
1. Go to OUTDOOR RUN (or similar workouts like outdoor walk)
2. SCROLL DOWN and SELECT CUSTOM WORKOUT
3. CHOOSE Custom workout type - here we choose CUSTOM.
4. Setup a warmup step
5. Then add a WORK or RECOVERY step
6. CHOOSE a Cooldown
7. NAME your Custom Workout
8. Customize your WORKOUT VIEWS
In our example I have setup a warmup step and then added a work step with a TIME duration of 10 minutes. I can also add an ALERT to it either based on PACE, HR, CADENCE or other measure.
For the second step that will be part of a repeat, I choose a RECOVERY step and add 1 min. You can alternatively add the walk break as a WORK step also.
Finally you can block these two steps into a REPEAT LOOP, just a ADD a REPEAT STEP and pick the steps you want to repeat, then specific the number of times you want this repeat step to loop.
Last Optional step is to CUSTOMIZE WORKOUT VIEWS or otherwise known as changing the data fields. Some screens you can’t change but there are a few that you can DISABLE or HIDE from view. And others where you can setup a custom metric screen.

not being able to make the custom workouts from the phone is insane
Realmente. Como ninguém na Apple pensou nisso?
I agree. It's especially bad because they also don't let you scale up intervals, so for example when I wanted to set up an interval run with 20 intervals rotating between rest and work I had to manually enter the exact same rest block and the exact same work block 40 times. You can't even copy-paste the blocks you set up, so you have to turn the wheel to the same numbers each time. And you have to do all of this with one hand while your wrist is getting tired from being held up so long.
I love a lot about the Apple Watch, and I love that it allows custom workouts, but the setup process for custom workouts is the worst software experience I've ever had on an Apple device -- it's HORRENDOUS.
Agreed, this is immensely frustrating, and backwards. They want you to purchase the apple fitness+
@@ryanprussin you can add up to 98 repeats, by pressing repeat, and selecting the items and number of times you want to repeat. I just made an intervals workout for my daughter with easy repeats this way.
@@stevenfairclough5745 Oh my God, you’re right! Game changer. Thanks so much for taking the time to write that comment up - it was very helpful and you likely saved me a lot of pain for future workouts 🙏
Still very useful video, two years later. Thank you!
Thanks very much for this video! My wife is transitioning from a Garmin Forerunner 45 to an Apple Watch SE and wanted to make sure that setting running intervals were "easy" to implement for her Galloway training. Your content and presentation were right on target! I guess it's time for me to upgrade from my Series 3 watch to a Series 8 now! Thanks again!
Great video, probably one of the most useful once I found to date. Is it possible to add distance measurement to the Tennis workout. It just doesn’t give me the option in workout views
Do you know how to make it so if you use the workout feature on your watch you can hear the alerts in your airpods...say on a run??
Loving the custom runs on the Apple Watch but there are 2 things that drive me crazy. 1.) I can’t see which “round” I’m on and 2.) On the final “round” it would be nice to not have recovery before the cooldown. Has anyone found solutions to these by chance?
Apple - why is there no Audible Alert for Time? Beeps at the walk and beeps at the run alert. (aka work and recovery)Am I missing something?
My 15-year-old Garmin has this.
@@jeffkrebs it does that automatically
And what if I chose the option open? What does that entail?
Does “Recovery” on a run really mean walking? Im just worried that the watch thinks im still running, just running slower, during “recovery” and if Im walking then alot of my running data like pace, step length etc will be messed up. Or?
Is there a way to not show the elapsed time @ the top of outdoor run? Before the upgrade, it showed heart rate, rolling mile, current mile and distance. Now that it shows elapsed time also, it's hard for me to read the HR, rolling & current mile, and distance.
Is there a way, tell your work out that you’re using ankle weights?
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this video. I was looking all over to try to turn the splits off.
If I’m doing .20 @ 8:40 time then .20 @ 10:00 time…. Will it tell me to go faster or slower? I get setting up the app for workouts, but I’m confused on that part ?
Not with this, it’s not like the virtual partner you’d find on a garmin to help you maintain pace
can i add some custom workouts and keep them for permanent? Do I need to add the workout every time?!
You add them only once
This helped me a lot, thank you!
Can you set the repeat to infinite?
It goes up to 98
@@AvoidingChores Thanks. 98 if fine most of the time, but when doing a marathon and being slow as an arthritic turtle, I need twice that.....
Is there a button for go until lap pressed
yeah hopefully they add an option such as press both side button for the next lap instead of pausing.
But I'm pretty sure Apple is expecting us to buy the Ultra to get this "action" button feature
@@viledanew if you double tap the screen in a workout it will make a lap
Thank you, very useful.
liquid vitamin E for that skin....
being on the east coast, probably scurvy
You just save me $699 on a Garmin
Yup.
