I think Strava also lets you input how hard you thought the workout felt, and then you can choose to override HR date and it recalculates your training load based on that. Similar to you with the Apple, I find it under calculates training load on really long workouts like when I go do ultra distances lasting 6-8 hours and at the end my body is wrecked, but my training load may be less than if I did a 2 hour run with a 30 minute threshold hill effort, pushing into anaerobic a few times and 30 minute tempo flat effort. When I adjust the perceived effort of how the workout felt and override HR then it will bring these two training loads into better perspective. I wonder how this compares with Apple?
I think it's telling that Apple is not using HRV in its Vitals calculations, considering Whoop and others use it for a similar recovery metric. I found my Apple Watch regularly records "outlier" values for HRV almost every night (e.g. most values are under 50 but there will be one or two above 130). I wonder if this might be a reason?
Been playing around with these since Beta 1. Definitely agree! A cool first step, effort rating and factoring in your perceived exertion into load is awesome. But everything else and the way it actually practically affects your training still has a way to go but keen to see it get there
Hi Des. Thanks for the video. You talked about whether to account for duration on your effort rating or not, but you didn't really come to a conclusion. What should we do here? How should we rate a zone 2 five hour ride? It is both easy (effort) and hard (effort x time) at the same time!
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that you should be able to go back in your workout history and assign an effort rating to previous workouts, which should have an affect on populating training load data. Have fun with it!
@@DesFit I'm excited to play with it. I've been using Athlytic to get "training readiness" as I had a coros and a whoop for a while but ended up liking my apple ecosystem. I'm excited to see how this stacks up I'm usually never bothered with battery life anyway as its routine to charge it everynight other than when I have big pushes like this one coming up.
Just got the U2 10 days ago. Watching your videos and learning a lot. Have the modular complication watch face. I understand the Training Load graph on right side. But, not the Vitals on left side of watch face. I know it will show me Typical and Outliers. But, I don’t understand the blue Typical symbols. Some are oval and some circular. Like now I have a blue oval in center with a circle on top of it. Not sure what that is saying other than I am typical for vitals. What does the oval mean compared to circle. Thanks
Great videos. Been learning alot for my new Ultra 2. I can adjust my Effort level after workouts and see that info in the Fitness app on iPhone 15 pro, even before I got the Ultra 2. But, not on my watch anywhere. I can't find the screens you are showing starting around 1:30 into video. Is it because I don''t have enough workout sessions on the Ultra 2. Only 3. I have many more going back in time from my S4. Only 3 Sleep nights in Vitals on Ultra 2.. NVM, I found it--Had to scroll down to bottom and open Workout labeled Other. Had a purple 6 in a cicle which was my Effort level yhat I saw when I opened the Workout. Thanks
Great review as always, Des. Do the training load features apply only to workouts recorded on the Apple Watch or does it calculate third-party workouts also, i.e., Strava, Wahoo, etc.?
Personally for me it’s only given me an effort score automatically for workouts that I started on the default Apple Watch workouts app. For workouts that I used a 3rd party app for I had to add the effort rating myself afterwards
Hi Des! Great video again as always. I thought about upgrading from my old watch 6 but without HRV I think I will take a closer look on the Garmin Fenix 8. This one seems to be the better „one-in-all“ solution considering fitness/health metrics for daily life and very detailed sports analysis. Or did I miss something?
Although the Vitals app doesn't take into account HRV, it's actually still recorded and you can see it in the Health app. There are also 3rd party apps that can provide actual recovery feedback based on HRV such as Athlytic and Bevel. Thanks!
Since watchOS 10, I have been having problems with my 1st generation AirPods. As soon as the music exceeds 80 dB, the left or right one constantly interrupts and resumes the music. I have already described it several times in the Apple Bug Report, but it is never addressed. I'm starting to get really angry with Apple 🤬
@@DesFit hmmm, sorry about that, I did relisten before posting. I am using headphone so they may be more sensitive to it. Hey, if no one else comments, all good. Thanks for the great content.
I want so bad to switch Apple Watch U2 from Garmin (triathlete here), but holding out until Apple enables manual lap swimming with the action button! Maybe it will be a part WatchOS 11??
Hi, I find that when I try and track my MTBing my watch keeps pausing. Is there anyway to stop that, I’ve lost loads of data, my friends does the same, just keeps pausing for know reason
Garmin already let you choose theperceived exertion after a workout. And to be frank, I think they are doing a good job not to take that into account for the overall "work-load-calculation". Otherwise its getting hard to compare it.
Not sure if this happens to anyone else, but my Apple Watch series 10 has consistently failed to detect sleep if it’s outside the sleep schedule (naps or sleeping after turning off the alarm)
I know you can't know the future, but what are your thoughts about the ultra vs ultra 2 or waiting for the new apple watches? The Ultra one is on sale by a pretty significant amount and wanted an opinion of someone who is pretty involved in the smarwatch community
Not much difference between the Ultra 1 and Ultra 2, except for the S9 chip. Of course that will last you another 1-2 watchOS cycles, but by that time I assume you’d be upgrading for a new smartwatch. If you can wait another 11 months, you’d rather wait for the Ultra 3, which is poised to get the latest S chip and the LTPO 3 display (both of which are significant upgrades from the Ultra 1)
Will the heart rate with Apple Watch connect to my Wahoo Elemnt Roam v2? I currently have to use the North Pole Engineering Heartbeatz device to communicate the heart rate from the watch to the Wahoo. It’s a pain to have to bring this device. Any reason the watch can’t connect to Wahoo and Garmin bike computers? I do not want to use my phone as a bike computer. Thanks!
Still seems a bit behind others... was hoping the vitals and training load would be tangible and a little more useful. I think they need to better present the date in more meaningful ways
Anyone noticed that the pace average calculations in the new fitness app widgets aren’t correct? They seem to be averaging paces of workout intervals instead of giving the actual pace
I looked at Apple Maps in Colorado and I don’t see trails. I looked for Capitol peak trail and it wouldn’t show. If it doesn’t show in Apple Maps, what’s the real use with hiking mountains when the trails aren’t even there?! I may get a Suunto race s for a hiking watch so I don’t have to spend $500+ on a Garmin.
Can I update the intensity of a workout manually if it's imported from Strava? I record my running and strength on apple watch but cycling I record on Hammerhead Karoo, which uploads it to Strava, which then uploads it to apple watch workouts (as a Strava workout)
I haven’t figured out a way to have the intensity imported into the workout app from a 3rd party apps. If you track a workout from Apples workout app, it will auto assign an effort. Hopefully this is changed because I don’t always want to assign an effort from Strava
It does but you have to manually go in to the native Fitness app and the workout that’s been imported from WorkOutDoors , and rate the workout. You won’t get promoted when you finish the workout, like in the native Workout app.
I’m a mountain biker and have tried an Apple Watch several times to track a ride and to train for races. My Garmin Watch plus ANT+ sensors blow the Apple Watch out of the water.
