      I've been using some old Nikkor AI-S lenses and have been really happy with how they perform. They have some of that magic in them, but were like... $10 each?

    Nice review. You should try the FD 28-50 f3.5 and 24-35 f3.5. They’re two of the best FD zooms ever made, sharp wide open and parfocal. They were the go-to lens for photojournalists in the 70’s

    Never imagined they would have this sort of utility on a modern setup.

    Nice to see old zooms get some love over all the vintage primes. IMO there are a bunch of old zooms that have been trashed but look great on newer sensors. Especially from the big manufacturers. Some even as sharp and detailed as their prime counterparts. And with sensors being able to push higher ISO’s, the slower zooms are less of an issue. I suspect vintage zooms will be the next area the “vintage lens” demand moves to because, well, they’re the only vintage lenses left that haven’t seen the enormous price jumps due to high demand. Haha

    • @CineDailies
      @CineDailies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha I agree on all of the points. Do you any other suggestions for lenses to test out?

      @@CineDailies Minolta 70-210 f4 is incredible if you like the Minolta look; Sharp, with vivid colors and smooth bokeh. Minolta also has some great middle range zooms like the 28-85, 24-50, and 35-135.
      Vivitar Series 1 70-210 (there’s different versions of this lens and only certain serial numbers/models are great, but the great versions I’ve tested are incredible and they’re sometimes less than $30.) I even test one against a modern Canon 70-200 f2.8 L lens and it pretty much kept up in image quality. There’s a buying guide online that someone made that tells you exactly what to look for in serial numbers and models to find a great one.
      Contax Zeiss 80-200 f4 is one of the cheapest contax Zeiss lenses you can get and it’s very good. Also, the 28-85, 35-135 and 35-70 are incredible zooms, but a little pricier because they’re still contax Zeiss lenses. Both are as sharp as their prime counterparts. The 35-70 is especially nice because it’s so small and just really punchy and crisp for an older lens. The 35-135 is a tank, but it’s literally like having a bag of primes.
      Yashica ML (ML versions only) zooms are also 95% as good as their Contax Zeiss bigger brothers, if not as good, but don’t command Contax Zeiss prices. Especially the 28-85, and 35-70 f3.5. I’ve heard good things about the 24-50 but they’re really hard to find now. The Yahsica ML lenses were often made in the same factories as the Contax Zeiss lenses with some shared designs. Really Yashica ML lenses are some of the best kept vintage lenses secrets IMO. If you want a Contax Zeiss look and feel, but you don’t want to pay the higher prices they sell for, check out the cheaper Yashica ML lenses sitting ignored in the corner. Haha. I’ve test many of them next to their Contax Zeiss equivalents and it’s can be difficult to tell a lot of them apart.

    FD lenses are beautiful lenses. They have a charactoer to the look of their image which gives the impression that the image was shot on film instead of digital. when using newer lenses, everything looks almost like plastic. Great stuff.
