    Shopping for lenses can be an expensive endeavour. Which lens is best for portraits? What's the best budget lens? And if you're like me and you have an L mount camera such as the S5, S1, or S1H then you know that L mount lenses are very expensive right now. For a long time I thought vintage lenses were bad but I finally tried some Canon FD lenses and honestly they're really good. So if you need affordable prime lenses for your SONY A7sii or Canon camera. I think you should check these FD lenses out. They're the best affordable vintage lenses you can buy.

      I’ve solved this problem, I wanted to get something way too nice for an AE-1, I was looking at an FD 85mm 1.2, which is my favorite lens for my actual camera I use for work. Found out for $30 I can get an EF mount film camera lol. Scratched that itch with the new lens on an old camera and stopped looking for expensive hobby glass haha

    My hot take on the FD series of lenses is that people should NOT adapt them for Canon's EF mount for the sole purpose of image degradation. In short, the FD lenses have a shorter flange distance than the standard lenses produced at the time, so to use them on EF mounted bodies, the adapters available have a piece of glass that is not held up to standard and will cause more chromatic aberrations and less sharpness all around.
    However! The FD's and nFD's are and absolute unit when it comes to mirrorless cameras! The adapter may be a little more expensive, but it is 100% worth it to get the best image quality out of these lenses. Super glad you are enjoying them! Hopefully this helps people in their search for vintage glass!

    • @impatrickt
      @impatrickt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have one of those adapters with the glass, you're right. but when you use them on anything else that doesn't need that extra glass adapter they're great!

    Just try portraits with 85mm, 100mm, 135mm or 200mm vintage lenses. It will blow your mind. The only problem with some lenses are the CA (removable in post) and some nervous background blur... But when you learn which distances and apertures are the better for soft background blur then the results are awesome

I ALSO have a nex-7 with a 50mm, i’m rocking the FD 1.8 S.C over here, messed with the colors in camera a little, threw a soeedbooster on, it produces some of the most beautiful images even in lowlight. The 1080p video is manageable to grade if you drop the sharpness and saturation, but even with standard colors it renders some BEAUUUTIFUL stuff, the speedbooster I use doesn’t really noticeably reduce sharpness, and when things aren’t crispy enough, 10/10 recommend.
      The nex-7’s only downfall is the dogwater autofocusing, it really has a beautiful and unique sensor though, so vintage lenses with manual focus really show what the camera is capable of

    I love FD lenses! Glad you're on the bandwagon now haha. one note, I got the Gobe FD to EF adapter for the 6k Pro and it renders the lenses un-useable. The image is incredibly soft and you can't achieve infinity focus (I tested 4 FDs on it and had the same result) so I'd recommend just fully converting them if you're going to use on EF! anyways, just my experience on that system. Great vid

      probably the flange distance on the 6K pro. I dont believe that's listed as a supported camera anyways. just the standard canon EF cameras. might be easy to fix on the 6K pro with shims. Growing up mostly with digital it took a bit to get used to the analog like look of vintage lenses. When people jump into this, they have to understand the rendering is nowhere near the same. I had to really look at what was going on to appreciate it. For a while it felt like something was missing in the images. It's like looking at TVs in a store and they're playing whatever demo video. You're looking at what's playing and all you keep thinking is how it looks hyper real. That's how modern lenses render compared to vintage lenses. Not that the modern isn't awesome, there's just a sameness you can't get away from no matter what you do. Personally I've stopped using anything but vintage lenses for my own personal work. Except modern MF lenses like Voigtlander.

    Nice work! I’ve been using the 28 and the 50 1.4 as well - love them. Quick question: how are you finding the file sizes with the S5 external recording? Too brutal? I’m thinking about going that direction because the Prores samples look pretty great, but I’m worried I’ll wind up blowing a fortune on storage.

    • @impatrickt
      @impatrickt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ben! I don’t use the external recording I don’t really see the need for it. I tested it for my initial review to see how the RAW worked/looked but the internal codec is really strong in 10 bit and like you said it will just eat up storage. Don’t really see a positive ROI on external recording. Maybe if I was doing something where we had to really push it in post but I can’t imagine that scenario to be honest. I’ve been shooting everything in v-log and the file hasn’t fallen apart on me yet. Even if I mess up and clip out. Easy fix to bring it back. I mean it’s obviously nice that if for whatever reason a client wanted RAW or ProRes you wouldn’t have to transcode but for normal use the internal 10 bit is really good. Hope that helps!

      The FL and the FD and nFD mounts are interchangeable with minor exceptions as the FL 2,5 35mm and the older 19mm. The bayonet has the same dimensions as the first R-lenses from 1955. The difference is the amount the lenses protrudes in the mirror box of the camera body. The A Series of cameras had larger mirrors which could interfere with the rear lens group. And, of course, the signal elements are different but downgrade compatible with loss of some functions.
