22 Miles in the Hoka Cielo X-1: Long Run Test

  • The Hoka Cielo X-1 is a tall-stacked marathon racer that uses a creative midsole geometry to stuff 46mm of PEBA foam in the heel. I's also a heavier shoe because of the extra foam we're getting. My first few runs in the shoe proved that it's a fun, bouncy ride over short distances. In this video, I put it through the long run test on a hilly 22 miler with 14 miles at marathon effort and two miles at threshold. Here's how it performed.

    Pls Don't lose that honesty and integrity to any sponsors, like so many shoe reviewers seem to do nowadays.
    You talk brilliantly, you're a genuine runner with fantastic knowledge.

    OMG, been waiting for this since your first run with them! People should remember that 1 ounce of weight is nothing compared to loosing a couple pounds before a race! Only the elites will notice this “weight penalty”!

      Not quite true, one ounce on the feet is at the very end of the double-pendulum of your leg, a point where weight becomes much more influential on running economy than in the upper body. There’s been good research done demonstrating the relationship between shoe weight and RE - Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2016 Nov;48(11):2175-2180.

    • @TolunayOrkun
      @TolunayOrkun 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with Logan. The weight difference at your foot is rather different than weight you have somewhere else on your body because of the movement. Sports science has quantified that every 100g increase in weight of the shoe you lose about 1% of running economy. The shoe can be heavy, but it needs to make up for the lost running economy. For example, for me Adidas Prime X Stung OG makes up for all the weight of the crazy amount of foam and rubber outsole on the shoe. I am not saying this shoe does not, but it is currently the heaviest legal super shoe. On a short run at easier pace this might not matter but during a race it could.

    Good review..for my Boston qualifier the Cielo sounds like a good choice..my most important thing is how comfortable it is in the last 6-8mi..haven't tried the alphafly V3 yet but V1 has been fair..it gets too harsh when the foam has gotten flat..I find the Cielo has a much better roll thru and really likes to be pushed ..same for the Mizuno pro 1..the the NB sc elite V4 is very comfortable but doesn't really have that extra pop..it might be one of the best trainers on the market for long runs..

    • @supwell
      @supwell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cielo was super comfortable for me throughout the whole run - even miles 20 to 22 when I was cooling down it still felt great. I didn't get any foot fatigue in it either like I can get with some other shoes on long runs. The only discomfort I had was in the beginning when warming up and heel striking, the midfoot foam bulge is awkward to land on. But if the alphaflys work for your mechanics you should be golden in these

    I’m only even more stressed about which to choose from 🙃. I had a little left side achilles injury back in the spring/summer last year. Since then it seems my left sides tends to definitely heel strike and I can’t correct it while my right foot seems to be more flat maybe with a little heel strike. Definitely seems to flatten out during race pace but I don’t know. I’m not advanced as you. I just be running and not really knowing what happens totally. Either I hit my splits or I’ll get it next week. I was stuck between this or the alphafly 3. But now I don’t know. Maybe VF3 at this point. Whatever will help me get 2:55 marathon this year

    30+KM long run yesterday temps started at -14C/-21C windchill. and was barely warmer when I finished. And threw in two 10min sections of 4min marathon power, 1 min hm power, 4min mp, 1min hmp, 10min steady, then 10mins of previous interval into cooldown to finish 30km, all in the Novablast v3. Hit power targets, and Novablast disappeared on my feet...never thought about my feet once.
    HOKA are using the same midsole profile as the Mizuno racer which completely gets around the heel stack as measured perpendicular from the heel to the ground. Curious if World Athletics will close that loop hole or not...but I doubt it. Weight is the next major improvement in racing shoes, now that all brands have basically caught up to ZoomX with their own foam compositions.

    • @supwell
      @supwell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds like a beast long run! I could not do it in temps that cold hahaha bd agreed on "race to the bottom" for weight being the next frontier. I don't think those super lightweight shoes with poor durability make sense for us hobby joggers but it'll be a cool arms race to watch for elite racing

  • @xtalenx
    @xtalenx 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    You mentioned it's not a good option for heel strikers, what race day should would you recommend for a heel striker (and dragger)? Similar to you I think, I drag my heels and heel strike, so I am looking for outsole coverage on the exact spot it's missing from Cielo X1...

    • @supwell
      @supwell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Saucony endorphin pro 3 is a better option for heel durability and mechanics. I have 300 miles total across two pairs and they're great - raced a marathon in them as well. Of the new ones releasing this year, TYR Valkyrie elite carbon and new balance sc elite v4 have worked really well for heel striking as well and have good rubber coverage. New balance has a bit more rubber but is a less aggressive geometry. TYR has a strong forefoot rocker and is super stable. I haven't ran in the endorphin pro 4 yet but that may be a good option too - stay tuned on that front

      It's this guy here - the Nathan speed draw a.co/d/htsEKM9 I carry it with me for the whole run - usually filled with tailwind endurance fuel. It has an elastic strap so that you don't have to grip it and I pretty much forget about it once I'm running. Also I like it way better than putting gels in my pockets and trying to fish them out when running at marathon pace

    When I wouldn’t finish my bagel before my long runs ( 20 mile ish ) it wouldn’t be good because I‘m already starving after every long run 😄 It‘s fascinating how efficient your body use the fuel you‘re giving to it 🔥🔥🔥 What I heard about the Cielo X1 from run like heller and Seth James Demoor is that the shoe is frankly speaking really good but what is standing out in a negative way are the laces 🤔 What is your opinion in general about the cielo x1 and their laces? 😃

    • @supwell
      @supwell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn't have any issues with the laces on the long run - I did my usual double knot and they stayed tied the whole time. Lock down is great too and overall super comfortable shoe (except for heel landing)
