One thing you didn't pointed out is how the game stylizes and dramatizes motorsport, making it look like some gladiator battle that only the bravest and strongest warriors dare to challenge, at least that's what I got from it. Also EA had plans to turn Shift into it's own series outside of NFS but it got cancelled since Shift 2 is the worst selling NFS game to this day. I wish we'll get more games like it.
I mean the concept is there (god I love those intense remixed OST) but they failed to make the physics right and neither arcade nor sim players like it.
There’s an interview floating around on TH-cam with Ian Bell (Former CEO of SMS) who got told by Patrick Söderlund (Former Vice president of EA) that they would do Shift 3 but then something shady happened because of Patrick. He had an egregious way of trying to buy SMS which made Ian Bell lose a lot of money. Give the interview a watch. It's an eye-opener on how EA is true scum
An unexpectedly great game that only got better with time. When it launched in 2011 it had serious handling issues and required a pretty beefy PC to run. Now that the community has had more than enough time to mod it, fixing all the little gremlins and doing stuff like fixing the handling & adding console-exclusive DLC to the PC version, it's a very good bite-sized version of Forza. And SUPER atmospheric. When I started racing in real life, only the SHIFT games really conveyed the sensory overload of what it's like to race in reality.
Shift 2 had some awesome retro/vintage tracks, as well as lots of GT3 cars that Gran Turismo was lacking at the time. Not to mention the fantastic soundfx in the game.
This game was awesome. Cool thing about this game you could take a road going car and turn it into a proper race car rather than just putting on a wide body kit. The sense of speed made driving in a straight line fun, dramatic and scary. This game had a pretty solid carlist with a wide selection of jdm cars. The handling was dodgy especially when making a jump imo. It had interior view with interior customization, I wish the newer Need for Speeds had this. Never understood why this game is either overlooked or hated. I'd rather play this over Heat and Unbound.
I really love that this game tried to emphasise the scary side of motorsport. It's a shame that this idea hasn't been taken futher. Shift 2 does however suffer from an overly agressive AI and sticky collision physics which can ruin your race through no fault of your own. Shift 1, even with it's ridiculous car punting, is more fun.
I agree, love the scary vibe with both games The ai definitely feels a bit more aggressive in 2, I think they were trying to up the ‘edgy’ factor, but definitely prefer the first game, I think the ai there behaved a little more realistically, they seemed more interested in trying to win than in knocking you off the track like in the second game
I bought this game two days ago for my x360 and I play it without being able to tear myself away. The helmet camera is something even GT7 on VR2 can't give me. Great game.
the main thing about shift2 that keeps me coming back is the one thing that todays racing games just utterly fail at: carreer progression! give me shitboxes to start, let me upgrade my shitboxes to keep up with faster things, let me buy better cars, give me bigger and harder tracks as i progress... the handling model quite wasn't as crap as it seems, it's mostly down to the default setups of the cars being garbage. i think it does handle differently, and worse than shift1, at least on a controller. shift2 had a weird laggy feeling to it and there was more understeer. another thing that was really weird about it was the fact that in the cockpit view, the steering wheel movement was completely disconnected from your inputs and also what the car was doing, which massively contributed to the overall feeling of disconnect. in hood cam it was wayyy better, and cockpit view was basically unuseable with a wheel, at least for me. which is a shame cause it looked fantastic. overall, great game, and if this had proper sim handling it would be top tier, cause it gets the *game* part of a racing game so right, even though it laks a bit on the *racing* part. to me, NFS pro street, the original GRID, shift and shift2, and TOCA3 are the games that really nailed progression. man, someone needs to mod a proper carreer mode into assetto corsa... PS: worst part of the game? on every replay my urge to strangle vaughn gittin junior grows stronger, and i always leave the drift events for last because they kinda break the game progression/money system.
100% agree, they nailed progression in this series, I really wish some of these systems would show up in a modern sim, particularly the corner and track mastery. Also agree regarding Vaughn gittin jr, the game would be much better without all the try hard energy
if racing was a horror game, the last good NFS with serious soul. The intro sequence + main menu ambience alone captures a feeling unlike no other... Amazing vibes...
This game is the reason I make team NFS liveries for all my cars Also for those who still play the game: Have a 5 lap race in Riviera on the Casino layout, 95% chance you will see a collision in the middle of the race which is why it's my favorite track
Many didnt like the handling which is kinda important in a racing game, even more when it wants to go more " sim". I like the best version of the SHIFT- games more: Project Cars2 is what SMS did after these games and I like it alot. And If you just want to have fun with racecars Racedriver GRID is also out there. SHIFT didnt really fill a niche and shouldnt have been branded NfS. ProStreet also had closed courses but had a whole different better vibe going for it.
I really liked shift 2, but yeah the cutscenes were always a bit weird with the racing drivers that i had never seen before. Yo you gotta do some sick drifts in this event man, show what your capable of. But all around it was a great game. I would maybe enjoy a look at the first Toca Racer driver game. Or what its called where i live, DTM Race Driver cause yooo Germany 💪 its really old now and i am glad i have a physical copy as for both Test Drive Unlimited games and Underground 1 to Pro Street from the NFS side for PC. Great games and Toca Racer Driver is always a great choice to come back to for me. Great video once again, whos this guy might be my actually favorite video series ever ❤️
I think the driver lineup aged well, it was just too early in their careers at the time. Vaughn Gittin Jr eventually became one of Formula D's first big stars. Tommy Milner eventually became a Corvette factory driver and has a few Le Mans wins. Chris Rado was an NHRA Sport Compact champion. Devs did their homework for sure.
Thank you, really happy you’re enjoying the series I think the toca games might be the v8 supercar games where I am in Australia, but I have a vague memory of playing one on pc when I was tiny and it was definitely called toca 🤔 maybe my dad had a dodgy version 😂 I’ll see if I can find out and do a vid. I keep finding examples of how developers punish pirate copy players and I found this was also the case when i finally went legit on Shift 2. There's a severe difficulty boost even on the easiest difficulty, a steering lag and psychotic AI aggression that was completely absent from the final version I got dirt cheap on Steam. I was actually playing on the highest difficulty setting when I was most active on Shift 2, which I've recently started playing again for completion's sake. I actually stopped playing because the entire time I thought if a similar game was available, but without the whole trauma simulator aspect...then Project Cars came around. Slightly Mad's signature IMO was that sequels didn't make the previous game obsolete so while the night racing and corrected visual customization feature (among other things) improved Shift 2, the career structure, menus, car grudge match (forgot what it was actually called) and the supportive English bloke makes me prefer the original Shift. I used to love this game on PC because you could change the values of almost everything from the game files, such as the turbochargers power, and I would make some of the cars super fast, not unrealistically fast, but pretty super fast and I had a blast with it.
i found this game quite awesome and was the first racer that got too challenging for me to finish. my major bugbear was that the AI would always do a sorta half-PIT manoeuvre when you overtook them, which according to the game physics would completely disable steering in one direction. i mighta persevered with it otherwise.
I decided to play Shift 2 becuse of its soundtracks. After %100 completion and understood its racing spirit. I realised i ride/drive in real life way better than before. Shame that Slightly Mad never had a change to finish this game properly.
cant wait to see shift 3 now that sms fallen back into ea hands and nfs franchise is still in its stagnation period where they are desperate to try anything, making a simcade being one of those things
I feel like I missed out a bit on the sequel. I was always told to avoid Shift 2 by my friends for no particular reason, only that it was "worse". I also didn't realize the Shift games were made by SlightlyMad; as soon as you showed some night racing, the shadows really gave it away. Since you're already in this vein of racing games, I'd love to hear your take on PGR4 in a future video. The servers are long dead, which sucks because the multiplayer was incredible, but PGR4 is an incredible gem with some of the best car sound design I've come across in a videogame. I'm digging the content; keep it up Sam! 😁
I think shift 2 is worse than the first game, but only marginally, it’s still a fun time, I think the attempt to make the game feel more ‘edgy’ resulted in some changes that weren’t for the best - I’d still recommend both though if you’re just after a fun racing experience that’s fast and has a great progression system I definitely want to check out pgr4, I’ve only played the 3rd game in that series, I’ve always heard 4 is great
Actually recently started this up again myself! It's really dramatic, but the thing I never got with Shift 1 or 2 was the physics and the axis cars rotate on. But this was a similar thing in project cars too. Cause for the car to rotate around the corner, the front doesn't turn in, but the back steps out. Looks really weird on chase cam.
Great sim I guess, great game. I beat it the first time with the controller. I'm doing it again with the controller. I'm too broke for a wheel but it would be better I'm sure. NFS Shift series is very unique. It's not like the mainstream NFS games, that's why the sales aren't as good, but that doesn't make it a bad game. Shift 2 is phenomenal. I like street racers like MW and Carbon, and Pro Street is basically a gateway to track racers. Shift 2 is so dramatic and challenging, it feels so rewarding when you progress through the game. And you have Vaughn yelling at you in your face the whole time because he was born Ready To Rock. Great video 🤙🏼
Your videos are such a good vibe man, literally some of the most engaging content I’ve seen on the platform. Imagine a game with the shift series single player progression with GT7 (or similar) driving and physics, I feel like that’s really what’s missing from the more modern light-sim racers. Might just be nostalgia but the higher focus on online racing in both FM and GT7 feels like it’s decreased the need for focus on AI quality and single player progression. And while I do love sport mode i would love to just boot up some custom races where the AI can drive the car properly and not just let me past and then rubber band the whole game.
You’ve basically just described my dream game 😂 totally agree that single progression is really lacking in modern racing games - if you put shift’s progression systems into gt7 it would probably be my favourite game of all time Really glad you’re enjoying the videos 😊
I typically watch TH-cam videos using a sideloader, I believe it is called. Except for this channel, because I want to contribute to your growth. Fantastic video, as always.
Would love for you to check out GTR2 (if its even playable on modern hardware, gotta confess I've not tried). Its basically the genesis for the Shift and Project Cars games, as well as spawning a lot of sim racing titles. I think for a lot of Sim & Simcade Racers its like their first drug - a high they've beem chasing ever since and never really been able to re-capture. Bonus points if you can get the "Power and Glory" mod running - it completely reconfigures the physics and is probably still the best simulation of 60's/70's era racing (on vintage cross-ply tires which nothing since has even bothered to try and model)
The sheer contrast between gran turismo's chase camera and this is curious. One is as static as can be, which helps in lite sim racing games but the other is a borderline unplayable mess of camera shake and suspension bounce and your car trying to oversteer under acceleration.
I tested my moza r5 on this game and its crazy...... it actually has legit force feed back. I was kinda dumbfounded...... you have to connect a controller for it to work correctly some reason
Before shouting that "tHiS iS nOt a Sim", I'd like firstly to ask if there's simracing experience to say that. Ah, no, perfect. Then, as the biggest issue that Shift faced was underrating dued by NFS badge, I point, is Forza (motorsport) a simulator? Then Shift has just a pair of minor defects, nothing important, something like wheel support (has someone ever bought a Fanatec, which is compatible, to play Forza 4?) , PC version with interesting tyres mods, and bots that I feel a bit faster than drivatars. But, yes, it is not a simulator, just the first Pcars was built on Shift 2, nothing special. I forgot to name GT, well, GT5 and GT6 suffered of dementially slow bots and a general lack of competition in offline mode. The evergreen defect that kills a driving feeling that I use to find comunicative, really satisfying. But, remember that theese games are too arcade for an Iracing champion, maybe there's a reason why they gained the name of simcades
farr this game was something else, the sense of speed and just the fear of 1 wrong input and fucking shit up was to me one of the greatest car games there is, nothing matches it
Great work, would love to see your thoughts on the formula 1 game story mode (cant remember what it is called but it is a wild ride). Also you look how I imagine the brother of Matthew Newtons stunt double would look, no offence but some things cannot be unseen.
😂 I’ll take it as a compliment I’ve definitely been toying with the idea of checking out a formula one game, I do like when they throw a bonkers story mode into racing/sports games
@@wimpwilson You definitely should check it out. I recently played part 2 of the story mode (f1 2023) without any knowledge of part 1 and have been screaming into the void since
@wimpwilson good idea, I think I played 2012, 2013, 2018 and 2023 with wildly varying handling, difficulty and ai insanity. I remember in f1 2012 you could get out ahead of the pack and even the slightest contact from behind would explode the other cars front wing so heavy handed defending won many 100% length races
2:35 yes theres a major difference between those 2 for me, in shift 1 cars turn better and faster. i wish shift 2 kept the old voice actor, art style and the LAN multiplayer option at least... also, thats why shift 2 feels less fun, physics are less arcady too. (also... 9:28, i dont like shift 2 because of these stuff)
Interesting, makes a lot of sense now you’ve pointed it out. Totally agree regarding the tone, much prefer the first game in that regard, number 2 feels it’s trying a bit too hard to be edgy

5:24 ahhhhh the good ol' fromt stretch of fuckin monaco. That track is based on the IRL asure circuit that hosts F1 to this day.
Nfs shift had some an amazing features that other sim racing game really needed
In my opinion
Agreed, wish some of the systems in it would show up in modern racers
The second game is first game but too shiny I like the first one more for the grit hard pass on nfs shift 2
Great video. Really enjoyed the editing style!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🙏
I think that’s the whole SlightlyMad Studios catalog. Though Project Cars 3 had the skeleton of the Evolution Studio devs there so… Driveclub next????
Not quite, they also made Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends.
I’m a driveclub fan, definitely going to have to do a vid 😁
Thanks for the review.
Glad you enjoyed 👍
I start playing racing game with nfs shift 14 year ago.. and shift 2 best for me.
Great video, i realy enjoy this game on ps3. Now i play on pc! There is the possibility to buy it in 2024? I cant take it on EA store.
farr this game was something else, the sense of speed and just the fear of 1 wrong input and fucking shit up was to me one of the greatest car games there is, nothing matches it
Great work, would love to see your thoughts on the formula 1 game story mode (cant remember what it is called but it is a wild ride). Also you look how I imagine the brother of Matthew Newtons stunt double would look, no offence but some things cannot be unseen.
😂 I’ll take it as a compliment
I’ve definitely been toying with the idea of checking out a formula one game, I do like when they throw a bonkers story mode into racing/sports games
@@wimpwilson You definitely should check it out. I recently played part 2 of the story mode (f1 2023) without any knowledge of part 1 and have been screaming into the void since
I shall check it out. I’ve just picked up a couple of the older f1 games as well, curious to see how they’ve evolved
Would love for you to do a video for Grid Legends or Dirt 2.
They’re definitely in the pipeline, stay tuned ☺️
He’s back! Is 0:49 you on the keys??
Sure is ☺️
I see a wimp wilson video
I click
midnight club 3 when
Definitely getting into midnight club series in not too long 😊
@@wimpwilson woooo
sam make a video on dark souls/elden ring
TH-cam doesn’t seem to like my non racing content but I’ll give it a go 😂
the real question is... is WIMPY actually WILSON?
🤔🤔🤔
2:35 yes theres a major difference between those 2 for me, in shift 1 cars turn better and faster.
i wish shift 2 kept the old voice actor, art style and the LAN multiplayer option at least... also, thats why shift 2 feels less fun, physics are less arcady too.
(also... 9:28, i dont like shift 2 because of these stuff)
Interesting, makes a lot of sense now you’ve pointed it out. Totally agree regarding the tone, much prefer the first game in that regard, number 2 feels it’s trying a bit too hard to be edgy
Expand your gaming review sam and you would reach at least 100k subs in like months
Pleeeaaaase review Midnight Club Los Angeles
Will do
❤
All I Gotta Say 1 is not like 2 the 1st one Better
You want to play a decent Shift game that isn't dumpster fire in every single way, but is actually good at what it does? Play Project Cars 2.
Simp Wilson
I jus instaled , and its wild, i have fh 3,4,5, i cant play that kind of games anymore like other new title, i forget fh still exist in mypc, they are sou griding and borring, back the games was made for fun and have something, now its just graphics, griding and some of them are simulacrum, if you want simulator get the fk out from thehouse and drive cars. I cant stop play shift, i like its very agresive, its like when you push the pedal of brake or acceleration you feel leet agresive and dramatic, i a hink i will stop playng games released after 2017.that it , gamingigs dyng, eeach big title after 2017 its just failures, like that ugly outdated tdu solar coc😅
Im hungry hungryhuu huhuhuuhuungryhungry hahaha hungry for that SHIFT 🧁.
