Hey there Salt Strong. Got a Question for ya. I'm looking to get a BG MQ 2500. Only thing is, I'm not a fan of the T-style knobs. Can I get a knob from the Ballistic MQ to replace the then T-style one on the BG MQ?
@@JedemPoKucama honestly the Ballistic MQ LT is my favorite of them all, but between the Saltist MQ & the BG MQ I'm taking the Saltist. It's the handle that gives it the edge for me.
I have a Daiwa mini might gold ultra lite that i purchased about 46 or 47 years ago and I still use it. I caught hundreds of fish with it, including big carp, walleye and the biggest pike of my life on this tiny reel.
Good job Justin, Daiwa is all I use too, like to mention that as far as the mag seal, it’s only on the main shaft, not the line roller bearing, like they used to,( which is where I think it’s needed more ). The Saltist Back Bay is my choice over the Fuego ( which flexes too much for me ) but those LT reels are smaller. My overall choice is the BG MQ 4000, it retrieves 2+ more inches for 8 tenths of an ounce more for the same price. Good job thanks.
Those retrieve numbers are dependent on how full the spool is of line. The retrieve rate is greater as your lure/bait gets closer to the reel and the spool fills with line.

I’m going to go with the BG MQ, I was going to get a stradic, but this looks real good for the money! And I plan on mounting it on a Daiwa Beachcaster.
I'll be honest, the BGMQ 4000d- xh has replaced my Stradic as my goto inshore reel. While my stradic is still a great reel, for the money, the bgmq is a better buy.
@@Jritchey1211 yes I do. I’ve had my MQ for almost a year. Did my maintenance on it. Zero water or sand in it. Lol. Only feed back I’d give to Daiwa is to make a fully sealed MQ with a brass main gear. Sell it at 349 and you’d start taking that van stall money lol.
Great break down. So many reels out there and it gets confusing. I come from a fly fishing background and I can’t get over how much value you get with spinning gear. A 300 dollar fly reel is going to be pretty basic and if you took it into the salt it’d be shot after one trip. I’m liking the value of this new spinning world I’ve entered.
As you said, there’s a lot a variables. I have pretty bad arthritis in both hands. The Saltist MQ’s knob & and ease of reeling offsets a lot of the pain that I experience with other stock reels while wade and kayak (Autopilot 136) fishing. I really enjoyed your in-depth review.

Here's my confusion, I just ordered the Diawa Saltist MQ 5000 and it's TINY compared to the non MQ model. It looks like a reel you'd spool with 10lb test. I just destroyed my BG reel trying to service it because 2 screws were over torqued by manufacturer, while waiting for new body 🙂figured it is time for a new salt water reel. I love my ballistic ex400H reel. Have saltist 450 which is a little faster but double the weight and I do not know what fish will have a chance against that tank. Now you really picked my interest with this little 300 saltist which should be smaller and lighter than my ballistic. My only concern is that I like using heavier braid (so I do not cut my fingers), and this thing is rated for 20 @220 yards. So the question is will I be able to put 150 yards of 40lb or 30lb braid on it and how will it flow? Price vice it is about $60 difference and I take rigid body as it may work better on bruiser blues.
Hi thank you for this video. It was great and now I am about to purchase the Ballistic 2500 for inshore redfish/trout of my kayak. What rod would you recommend pairing with it? Looking btw 100 to 200 dollars. I throw mostly soft plastics and topwater. Probably use 10 lb braid. Thank you!!! You guys have awesome content.
@@FLFlatsmaster The TFO Pro has an advantage over the Banshee for kayak fishing because it has a shorter butt. Also, it will have a much better hookup performance assuming this angler is using lures since its tip is stronger than the 6-12 Banshee that has a very soft tip (great for live bait, but not good for many soft plastic lures).
@@FLFlatsmaster Yes, the Banshee can be excellent for lighter lures. The issue comes up when the soft plastics are rigged weedless where the hook point needs to be set through plastic as well as the fish before the fish realizes what they ate isn't natural. As for the butt length, the TFO is only 9 inches from butt of the rod to the lowest point where the reel arm enters the reel seat on the rod. For the above reasons, I stand behind the recommendation stated above for a kayak angler who is using lures - the TFO Pro will save money while having better performance for a kayaker using weedless soft plastics.
Any recommendation on a reel size for the saltist mq for fishing live baits around bridge pilings for snook in FL and striper fishing up in the northeast? I do most of my fishing from a kayak and sometimes from shore. I’m leaning towards the 6000. Thanks for the great info!!

I bought a Daiwa Over There 11ft ML/M and when looking for a light reel, ended up with a Shimano Vanford 5K (surf fishing light lure casting outfit) I looked at the Daiwa BG MQ but a zinc gear in a premium reel is pathetic especially in this day and age. I really dig Daiwa rods, but their reels (unless you're in the top echelon of models) seem to fall short of the mark. I am interested in building my first spinning setup for Inshore fishing in Louisiana, I am seriously considering the Saltist MQ, but I am torn between the 3000 and the 4000 Reels, as far as a Rod goes I am looking at the 7" to 7' 6" St Croix or the G Loomis medium heavy/fast action style rods. Any suggestions on which would be the better Reel for my intended use? I primarily fish Inshore Flats via boat, and I do some dock fishing as well in our wildlife areas in Cameron Parish.
3000 +10lb braid for artificials and casting all day. 4000+20lb braid for all around fishing. Ive paired my 3k reels with 7'6 M st croix avid inshore for casting distance and sensitivity. And 4k with 7' MH avid inshore for power to horse around quickly. St croix are abit stiffer imo than othe rod companies but great rods in my experience.

In Ont Canada Shimano has jacked their prices up. 2500 Stradic is 289.99 plus 13% tax Just picked up the BG MQ. 259.99. Plus tax. Headed to SW Florida to test it out on some trout and snook. My BG3000 is a tank so this new MQ might feel better out of a kayak
The best thing about BG MQ is that it doesn't have magseal 👍, make so much easier for DIY maintenance. I can save a ton of money by not sending it to daiwa for yearly maintenance. I has fuego 4k, the shipping and services to replace magseal, grease and oil cost 70% of the price of the real. With bg mq take me only 20 minutes to clean & new grease, oil. Most people overlooked that most important issue.
I recently bought Penn reels, both the Slammer and the Spinfisher in the 4500 size! The slammer was launched by what I am thinking was a sharkand in the surf for maybe 10 - 15 minutes! The drag assembly was free of sand and water, the drive assembly was contaminated by water but totally free of sand! However to area between the rotator and the reel body was full of sand, you might think that on a reel costing close to 300.00 dollars, more attention might be paid to this area! The sand contamination in this area locked my reel up tight after maybe 10 turns of the handle after retrieving my outfit from the surf!
sugar coating everything where the bottom line is barrings 6-8- and 9 lol thats why ea is smoother then the other where the saltist is the best bang over all DIAWA SPINNING REELS hands down where shimano's ci4 was its best over all
The reason I just won't buy these is they basically decided they don't want you servicing them yourself. They don't even give you the MQ body wrench in the box and they don't sell the Daiwa magseal liquid. You can buy third party fluid but that's always a risk. I don't want to have to send this reel into Daiwa every year to be serviced when it's a 15 minute job myself.
This really goes to show how slow and behind Daiwa is at their North America game. Japan had the first MQ in the form of morethan in 2017, rest of the world got the Exist and subsequently the Luvias/certate MQs. And multiple MQ variants based Exist (e.g. airity) and Luvias (e.g. Caldia) cover from top tier fresh water to budget universal applications now world wide. Americans on the other hand only has 3 BG MQ’s for salt water and that kage MQ that only 5 people in total bought 😂😂😂

@@annabanna666 I feel like that was his next question can I use these on the sun's surface or just lunch into orbit?
@@annabanna666 these are pretty inexpensive reels. The most expensive is the Saltist MQ which is like $300.
Love my Saltist MQ 5000, I'll be upgrading my other combos with the various Saltist reel sizes soon. Just don't mount them on cheap rods, kind of defeats the purpose of having a solid reel IMO
I hate seeing $400 reels on $50 rods, it's amazing. Gotta feel that bite to put the high end reel into action.
What Rod would you pair with the ballistic mq 2500 for open water inshore fishing for red/trout from a kayak?
We love the TFO (fishstrong.com/collections/saltwater-rods)!
Wish they made a 6k ballistic MQ . And for 300usd with zinc gears wished at least they have a sealed roller bearing. -_- me personally wud save up 100 more and get a Certate or Luvias Airity. Better gears and sealed roller bearing.
That’s the point. I’d they had better gears and a roller (which always fails In saltwater reels imho ) they would just be certates lol
@@aaronhiggs ikr if at least they made the roller bearing mag sealed and keep zinc gears i wud insta buy the saltist mq. I still prefer the saragosa on this price range. Better gears and sealed roller bearings. But at 400 certate and luvias airity is darn great for the price.
I am not interested in mag sealed anything so makes my choice easy cheers .
Honestly, I’m the same way. I like having the solid gasket more than the mag seal tbh.
You seem to be suggesting that the Ballistic will flex in situations that the all-aluminum body MQ and Saltist won't. Is this from experience or do you just feel that would be the case?

It's called the Pflueger Supreme XT., $179 and it has an anti reverse switch.
where do you think the KAGE LT fits into this lineup?

I have a Diawa Saltiest 5000 and love it. It's a perfect reel for fishing Grouper and Snapper off deeper reefs in Miami and Key Largo etc... Here's my confusion, I just ordered the Diawa Saltist MQ 5000 and it's TINY compared to the non MQ model. It looks like a reel you'd spool with 10lb test. Why would this 5000 class be so much smaller than the other 5000 class????

Hello everyone. Tell me, which reel will fit the spool on my Daiwa BG MQ 3000D-XH?
Justin what is the main. Gear made out of ?, brass-or cast zinc? Wish you had a link for sale of these reels to,your store! Thanks george
All reels can be found at FishStrong.com: fishstrong.com/
What's in those long brown Daiwa boxes?
More reels! It is just inventory we haven't opened to place on the shelves for our shipping crew to fulfill orders from.
Anyone heard about Daiwa GT ARK? I can see them for sale but nothing on Daiwa website or anywhere?
Not recommended daiwa GT ark for Asian market 😅
The XH models speed makes a huge difference in the surf. I really like the 2500 Saltist, but it is way too slow for my specific needs.
Thanks Justin! You da man
💪💪
Thanks for sharing!
@@FLFlatsmaster thank you!!! Gonna purchase soon!
We love the TFO (fishstrong.com/collections/saltwater-rods)!
Any chance you guys review the Penn Pursuit IV
I’ve got one. Great reel at that price point; only issue I have with it is flex at the stem. Feels more flexible at the stem than a pursuit 3.
Any recommendation on a reel size for the saltist mq for fishing live baits around bridge pilings for snook in FL and striper fishing up in the northeast? I do most of my fishing from a kayak and sometimes from shore. I’m leaning towards the 6000. Thanks for the great info!!

BG MQ 3k or Saltist MQ 3k for kayaking for striped bass?
Thanks for the question! Please visit the full blog on our website here: bit.ly/3K2JslF and post your question. This way, Justin can respond directly.
I need a reel with line capacity and pick up surf fishing for big tarpon and jacks off the beach. Is the 14k MQ capable?
Some would say that's almost overpowered! A lot use 8K size!
@@Saltstrong thank you for the insight and advice
Great reveiw bro
Question for everyone here, best for shore jigging in your opinion?
I started looking at the BG MQ ARK, but also Saltist MQ seems promising 😂
I just heard that these reels use pot metal zinc gears. Really hoping that is a rumor and not true. If so that is very disappointing, even the cheaper brands offer brass and aluminum at $150 price points.
Is the saltist really worth $100 more than the bg mq?
Just got to weight the pros and cons and see which is the right fit for your needs and budget!
In your opinion, which reel in the market provides the longest casts? I'm not talking about among these three reels, I'm talking about any reel that provides the longest casts.

I bought a Daiwa Over There 11ft ML/M and when looking for a light reel, ended up with a Shimano Vanford 5K (surf fishing light lure casting outfit)
I looked at the Daiwa BG MQ but a zinc gear in a premium reel is pathetic especially in this day and age.
I really dig Daiwa rods, but their reels (unless you're in the top echelon of models) seem to fall short of the mark.
The Vanford on the Over There looks better too and the whole combo is about ~500g which is incredible and I can cast slugs in the surf all day
Thank you for checking it out and for the feedback. We are happy to hear you found a reel you like!
Do i send the MQ reels back to Daiwa in case i need to service them or accidentally dunk it underwater?
You can find a Daiwa authorized service shop if that happens, and we would suggest they service it for you. 💪
What is the ball bearing for? the more bearing on the reel market more stronger thanks for your information on this reels.

But what do I need to catch a yellow tail?
Thanks for the question. You can check out our full blog at www.saltstrong.com/fishing-tips/ to find information about yellowtail fishing.
@@ShinkiZer0 pretty much. I like going to 2500s and 8lb suffix 835 on my artificial set up.
@@aaronhiggs if im fishing flats 6 to 8lb braid is so much fun on my 1k reel. The area i fish at theres so much structures such as oyster beds, mangroves, piling, rocks etc and 8lb frays so much easier. =)
@@ShinkiZer0 big same. I love throwing 8lb on my 2000 size penn battle 3 and my 6’6” ml calico jack rod.
You can’t go wrong with a saltist paired with any st croix rod. Best warranty in the business (15 years) and best of all Made in the USA 🇺🇸!
I want the best for the money to surf fish??
The BG is likely the best option of the 3 for the surf
In Ont Canada Shimano has jacked their prices up. 2500 Stradic is 289.99 plus 13% tax
Just picked up the BG MQ. 259.99. Plus tax. Headed to SW Florida to test it out on some trout and snook. My BG3000 is a tank so this new MQ might feel better out of a kayak
Have a great trip!
Strong and durable aluminum , or light Zion V and Mag-Seal, OR... ALL of the best features ! Wow; choices, choices, choices.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks bud, good demo.
No problem 👍
I think I go a with the bg I fish for musky in fresh water the mag seal would not matter
Epic review!
Thank you for watching!
Camaraman, plz stop moving.
A tripod would be nice lol
Good video, Justin! 👍
Good analytical review.
Thank you!
Can you service them? I was told that you’re not able to service MQ reels cause they’re single piece body.
Great video
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much.
You're welcome! Hope it was helpful!
Never heard of the ballistic, must not have been released in Australia yet
It might not have yet but we love it here!
I like the Saltist MQ but not that blue.
good job bro
Thanks
Diawa is decent for spinning except saltiga! But love their conventional. But I'm shimano guy all day long!
If the Daiwa saltiest cost $300 for $300 or $200 more I’ll buy the van staal for surf
Van Staal is a great reel as well.
sugar coating everything where the bottom line is barrings 6-8- and 9 lol thats why ea is smoother then the other where the saltist is the best bang over all DIAWA SPINNING REELS hands down where shimano's ci4 was its best over all
Saltiga or nothing 😎
Go with what you're comfortable with!
Once you are rich
The reason I just won't buy these is they basically decided they don't want you servicing them yourself. They don't even give you the MQ body wrench in the box and they don't sell the Daiwa magseal liquid. You can buy third party fluid but that's always a risk. I don't want to have to send this reel into Daiwa every year to be serviced when it's a 15 minute job myself.
Thanks for your feedback!
I have Saltist and is made in China.
Daiwa makes some of the best inshore spinning reels out there!
Buy all 3 😂
Yep! Can't ever have enough!
Dude is just reading off the box. like no one else can do that
Saragosa 5000
That is a good one!
Cant finish this vid, sry. Angle, focus stand point.
You left out the biggest difference between the reels!
