  • In this video Willamette University Adjunct Violin Professor Mark Babson joins me for a reaction video listening to artist and bands such as Necrophagist, Jason Becker, Megadeth, Racer X, Obscura, and Greg Howe. It was really insightful hearing Mark's thoughts on these profound musicians. The toughest part of this video was deciding what bands for reactions. We will be doing more reaction videos in the future as well as some of our compositions and jams.
    Check out my Spotify for my original instrumental shred and cover albums. For fans of Conquering Dystopia, Necrophagist, Racer X, Obscura, Death, Symphony X, Cacophony, and the like.

      ive been a metal head since 91 and a hobbyist guitar player since 2001. and when it starts to sound like a dude just running warmup scales, even i want to tap out. thats not to say i dont have a lot of love for these players. but a lot of stuff from back in the day sounded "new" at the time. as time went on a lot of it became the meat and potatoes of "metal" solos. I think thats why Megadeth stood out at the time. they had this jazzy sound that set them apart. then Marty came along and used a lot of chromatic movements to stitch things together like an alchemist smoking jazz. Mustaine has been chasing that musical high since then.

      @mattmillerguitar  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @BoKnowsBrains Marty is a great guitar player, and his work with Cacophony was insane. I agree that it became meat and potatoes, but that's what made it great. It became the standard and minimum level of proficiency.

      Yeah, something like GPF is probably the safest bet for more 'traditional' playing.
      Though I'm partial to showing his skill at improvisation and incendiary playing, for example: during 1:29:30 to 1:33:10 on this live version of Rice With the Angels in Atlanta 1996 (th-cam.com/video/gPTC7OHeUzA/w-d-xo.html)
      You almost need to see both his emotional and melodic playing along with his insane speed/articulation/improvisational skills.

      When I first heard Mark make that statement, I was surprised. However, after really listening to the song, I would have to agree with his opinion. Don't show him tornado as a violinist. Show something slow and tasty like a tout le monde, he'll enjoy that way more. To a non guitarist who hears the solo one time and never again, tornado just seems like evrry other shred solo. You have to analyse it to understand its brilliancy.

      @@mattmillerguitar np brother, just discovered your channel and your videos are great! I would suggest either something melodic and beautiful like "a tout le monde", or if you still want something heavy, choose a piece that is more complex in its background chords, like "Lucretia". Or if you have time to show him a whole song, choose one of Marty's originals. My top three would be "Undertow", "For a Friend" and "Valley of Eternity". But at the end of the day it's your channel and you can decide, the video's gonna be great either way. Have a nice day✌️
