Hey man, ive seen seversl reviews on the 390 and everyone loves it. However, no one talks about the fact that KTM's warranty doesnt cover any electronics on the bike..or most of the bike persay. Do you know if the electronics have held up well on your buddies bike? Has he had any issues at all?
That bike is absolutely beautiful! Would you think that that would be a good first bike for someone? I want to start riding when I get old enough, so do you think that this would be a good bike to start with? The price doesn't seem too overwhelming.
My first bike was a duke 125. I think you can start on a 390 especially the new ones. I think they changed the map a bit and it seems to be smoother than the older versions, which is better for a beginner as well. If you are careful you shouldn't have a problem, I would suggest to get it with ABS if it's optional in your country. If you are from the USA you should also do the MSF course. I've only ridden the 125 and 200cc version btw so take what I said with a grain of salt.

Miegie 1 the 390 is more fun. the 500 is better for long distance. the 390 is lighter and more nimble. the 500 has more weight, a larger gas tank, and better gas milage. In general, the 500 is a better bike. the 390 is like dating a stripper, it's cool at first but it's not something you want for long term
I'm also thinking about a ninja 650 right now because of the fairings. I also want to tour too but I still like the looks of the cb500f too. It's such a hard decision to make! I also know there is a cbr500r but I don't know if that's as much fun to ride as the ninja. Any thoughts?

Let me give you an insight into KTM. You know how every year you'll see different people doing the "Best beginner bikes of 20--"? Ever notice how the KTM 390's usually aren't on that list? If people want to bust your balls for buying a 300-400cc bike, they're not real bikers. I own a 2017 RC390, I ride with with a group of guys who mostly own litre bikes. We have a few CBR 1000RR's, a BMW S1000RR, Triumph Daytona 675R, Triumph Street Triple 675, my bike is by far the "smallest" bike. I never get flak for it, to be honest, I get more envy than anything. In the bike scene I've noticed personally that KTM gets a good bit of respect. People who know bikes and truly appreciate a motorcycle really understand and respect KTM engineering and performance. These might be "small" bikes, but they're in a league of their own. Get your Duke if you really want one. Fuck what some dick on a Busa might think.
In my personal opinion I say 2nd hand 690. I picked mine up for $8200 at my local Ducati Dealer. It had 1800 miles and came with the full exhaust, fender eliminator, and heated grips. Gives you a lot more bike to grow into as well.

The Street Triple is not considered a starter bike IMO. A 690 would be more comparable to it but would be much easier to start on due to its weight.

I wouldn't recommend the duke for freeway commuting. Distance is fine as long as your not sitting at 70.
