I saw this duet in the movie, and it was what gave me such a passion for opera now. It's so beautiful! And Ronaldo Villazon and Natalie Dessay are incredible singers! And the movie was so amazing
When I returned to this video after several months, I again experienced goose-bumps when the pretty duet blossoms into a glorious hymn with the change to Janet's wonderful voice. What a sublime artist !
Gracia, Merci, Thank you all for the post and the translations. I love watching her switch from germon to french when she speaks to the old people. I love the directors comments on the DVD. and Famous French, German, and Scotish Actors played the respective parts.I love this movie and that there is not just one hero or heroine rather a respect for life and goodness.
What a touching moment when the woman sings zum Sterben (unto [my] death) and the man immediately sings und zu meiner Ruh (and to my rest). Though this is a solo piece, it does give some extra meanings when singing by a couple.
This to be is the best rendition of this most beautiful of songs. The balance between the two voices is perfect and must make even God proud of his Creation.

Diane Kruger acts so well with her face. Being German, her lip-sinking of the lyrics is particularly well done. The famous ad hoc Christmas truce on the Western Front caused great consternation in the upper echelons and they took measures to prevent any such occurrence in the future. God forbid that the 'enemy' is humanized. The
The miracle & magic of beautiful prayerful words & music performed beautifully -- and with heartfelt emotion because it has a personal meaning for the performers, too. Great movie-making!
For most viewers, you saw and heard only characters in a movie. For me, one of those characters, was in real life, a distant cousin of mine. I never had the chance to met or know him, as he died some time before I was born. My grandfather knew him, and my father was introduced to him before WW 2. After that, what WW 1 failed to do to our family, Hitler and his thugs and WW 2 did.
Those who maintain that the moment of greatest union between a man and a woman is that of sex, should watch this scene again and again. There is nothing like the union of souls, as in this case. It will never be forgotten or broken, absolutely. If any one has been lucky enough to enjoy an experience of this kind, he knows perfectly well what it means, even though the woman herself has been shared, as suggested in the movie. Congratulations and many thanks for posting. Greetings from Argentina.
You really MUST see the movie to see it & experience it. It's a beautiful anti-war film (& based on real occurrences). No female is supposed to be in the war zone. She & "the singer" are both famous opera singers in Europe (they're Germans). They are also lovers who'd planned to marry, but he was conscripted/drafted into the army when war broke out and have been separated for some time. She got permission to perform for the Kaiser at the front & they go sing for the soldiers.
Nichols, thank you so much, I’ve been inthralled by the Christmas Eve scene for months now, imagine if that could have taken off throughout the front, how many lives could have been saved, thank you once again
That thought has never left me. It was a critical point that could have changed the world as we know it. I love this movie and the stories of men who lived it and shared it.
That is world class lip syncing, Diane Kruger either is vocally trained or a really good actress Also, the duet arrangement is perfect, Bach himself couldn't have done better

An interesting idea to extract Stolzel's lovely aria in a somewhat adulterated version from the movie, and combine it with the incomparable Janet Baker, still peerless near the end of her career.
It's about a historical fact during the first world war. The soldiers refused to fight each other at Christmas. The man does not want to sing for the enemy. The woman wants this either but she realizes the consequences. All conflicting parties seem to find each other in this beautiful aria. "Bist du bei mir" from Stolzer, noted by Bach. What enemy? In the movie, Anna suggested to the Kronprinz (the son of and heir to Kaiser Wilhelm) that she and Nikolaus give a recital for him near the Western front on Christmas Eve because she sees it as her only chance to see her lover again and spend a little bit of time with him. She basically uses the love the Kronprinz has for music and the opera to gain her own ends. It's much harder for Nikolaus who didn't know of her plan, and who has gone through traumatic experiences in these first five months of the war, probably hasn't sung in all those months, and is quite overwhelmed by this situation he suddenly finds himself in. And I daresay that having taken up smoking didn't help his voice either... 😉

It's a type of conditional statement which is grammatically correct and still somewhat in use. "(If) you are by me, (then) I will die happily.
