I always argue with my friend who thinks Ebarme dich is no. 1. I’m right, of course, that THIS is in fact the most sublime area from the St Matthew Passion.😊
This performance of Walter Berry is outstanding. A great deep bass bariton voice and sung with feeling. The man died in 2000. I know only very few artist that can reach this level for the Mathew Passion. Respect.
Interesting to hear this tempo, which is certainly more of what I was used to when I was younger. And oh gosh, it's hard to beat Walter Berry. And how thrilling to know that the whole performance is available on TH-cam.
Yes, many, and they all differ one from another. But this is probably my favorite Bach vocal, and I hope to recall it when I am dying, along with many other favorites.
And the most wonderful thing about it is when in context, after that dreadful 3 days of betrayal and agony, this glorious music shines like such a powerful beacon of hope and truth. thank you, thank you, thank you BACH for helping my feeble belief.
I just feel that anyone who dismisses this because they have become fixated upon modern "authentic" performance has lost sight, or more to the point, sound of something. This is timeless music making.
I always admire the elegance of Richter in conducting by heart the pieces, the way he moves his body, his arms, his hands, his fingers, it has a sculptural quality, even his face and looks when giving instructions is simply a joy to watch. The filming is also superb.
Thank you. This is one of my favoutite part from St. Matthew passion... I am deep impressed from his voice, singind and also Karl Richter's conducting... This is absolute bueaty and wisdom for me and a very big inspiring.
Karl Richter was a genius. He had very distinctive movements, like the way he points at people and the way he moved his head and body. If you saw a motion captured stick figure, you would recognize him. Walter Berry - a perfect voice and a perfect peformance. So beautiful. Thanks very much!
I agree, Richter was a genial Bach interpreter and Berry here is exceptional, thanks to Richter's direction. Just compare it with his much weaker perfomance under Karajan SMP.
Pergolesi was a lot better and everyone thought so. Bach learned it all from the Italians. The rest is Bach muzac. Nothing wrong with Bach, though. That is not the point.
@@leodepuydt308 Pergolesi`s music ist so generic, predictible and boring. Bach music is so viel of Life and Hope. I don't say this all of greatest composer of all times recognized of wonderful Bach's music is, Wagner, Beethoven, Liszt, Schoshtakovich, Saint Sanez, Brahms, etc.
Nearing the end of Lent in couple of weeks this song bring my eternal gratitute to the Lord hand His suffering my salvation. Special thanks to Mr. Berry and Richter.. SDG.
It translates thusly (according to the Oratorio Anthology I am referencing): "Make you, my heart, pure, I will Jesus in myself entomb, then he shall henceforth in me for eternity his sweet rest have. World, go out, allow Jesus in!" I hope that helps! It truly is a beautiful piece.
A bit literal actually, with the awkward German word-order. And no-one English would say "thusly" instead of thus. Make, thou, my heart pure. I will entomb Jesus in my heart. Henceforth He shall have His sweet rest in me for eternity World go out, let Jesus in.
I’m not the only one to think or express this, but Mache Dich is the most transcendently beautiful section in the most sublime long work of Western Music, quite possibly of all art. Only Michelangelo’s “Moses” for the tomb of Pope Julius, Pericles Funeral Oration and the Parthenon Marbles share company with Bach’s Matthau-Passion.
Richter the magician. What richness. He looks like he is just coasting but he must be Bach's great great great grandson. His orchestras are what Maria Callas David Oistrakh are. Berry ain't too shabby either. Different from Fischer Dieskau. I had the rare honor to perform the Passion, in Berlin, in 1988. Tears flowing.
In English: Make thyself clean, my heart; I will myself entomb Jesus; For he shall henceforth in me; forever and ever take his sweet rest; World, begone! let Jesus in! I am not even religious but this piece brings tears to my eyes, it is like the music of Bach is caressing the words. The orchestra sound is not good here but the bass is terrific!
It’s a lovely warm full voice. “Make yourself pure, my heart. I want to bury Jesus myself”. I struggle with the translation. Bach’s musical expression often exposes deeper meaning than the text.
It underlines the timelessness of great music for me when I think that I was probably 7 when these great people were performing this immortal music. Many of them are since departed but now, I am 50 later this year, I thank them and know I owe them and their like so much for awakening in me and nourishing my love of music -and my love of Bach.
This is simply the best performance of " Mache dich, mein Herze, rein" on youtube. The orchestra has more to be desired but the singing is perfect. So full of passion and power.
Grazie! Amazing! Thank you for sharing that!
It was written for this language, just like Verdi wrote for Italian or Massenet for French. AS far as the orchestra is concerned - there was never a better interpretation than the one by Karl Richter, and one must consider that this was recorded quite some time ago.

Thank you. That was brilliant, then again with a great baritone like Walter Berry you are guaranteed to be given a great performance. I was interested in hearing other interpretations of this fantastic aria after hearing Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau sing it, and marvellously might I add. I have two words for that performance, c'est magnifique!
This is a stunning interpretation of this piece. I find it impossible not to be moved by the swelling phrases that speak of both joy and sorrow... It is outstanding. I am currently working on this piece as well, and I would also like to comment on the commenters who said that they are not ready for this peace because they are tenors or high baritones. I say SING WHAT GIVES YOU JOY! There are no limitations to what is possible if you have confidence! =)

Piango di Gioia spesso quando ascolto Bach 😊😅😅😅😅❤
Walter Berry : No histronics, just perfection. Respect! Johan Sebastian must be very content.
I return to this regularly, but not so much as it becomes stuck in my ear. The brilliance of Bach and the magnificence of Walter Berry's voice.
What an astounding work of art, humanity, religion, poetry and much more, by the Greater Master who ever lived. Thank you J S Bach
Absolutely brilliant singing of an aria that is not easy. Walter Berry was phenomenal.

No. Sublime!
Yes, many, and they all differ one from another. But this is probably my favorite Bach vocal, and I hope to recall it when I am dying, along with many other favorites.
hardly. Beethoven called old J.S.Bach the "grand father of harmony" for a reason.
Definitely not. Only in other passages by Bach himself.

I absolutely love Karl Richter's interpretation of JS Bach. It's so rich, and it moves through your mind and ears right into your soul.
Best recording of this ever, I wish this was available elsewhere, Walter Berry's bass outstanding
look at amazon, DVD
This doesn't sound very Baroque though. It's not raw as a baroque piece would usually be. Have you heard the Netherlands Bach Society recording.
Maybe not traditional, neither is the orchestra, but the fullness of the sound in his voice is absolutely incredible

What amazing performance of Walter Berry, Bach was genious, I'm really really impressed, there is no words I can use to describe how I'm impressed...
My favourite version of Mache dich mein Herze rein.
Exceptional recording. Cannot find a better one. Love the pace. Absolutely beautiful.
It translates thusly (according to the Oratorio Anthology I am referencing):

A fine translation

Tears definitively flow when you are being present to this kind of music. Bach reached the pinnacle of musical creation at a divine level.
It would be a watershed moment of any life to perform Bach's Matthauspassion. What a privilege.
Incredibly powerful voice. It is awesome to watch and listen.

Yes--you are quite right. I've searched for anything comparable, and perhaps only Hermann Prey comes close. But only "close."
Richter is in complete control of his orchestra. He knows exactly what he wants and they perform it.
This is absolutely breathtaking, this music with this bass. What a blessing. Thank you so much.

❤❤❤
I come back every Easter just to listen to this, even if I don't have time to play the whole Richter recording.

The best interpretation ever! Wonderful.
The best performance of all youtube.
I prefer the one w/ Herbert Von Karajan .
That is magic -absolute magic. I'll stick my neck out and say I think this is one Bach aria that did better with the old performance practices.

I think his singing is beautiful to me.

You are perfectly right, Walter Berry, Fischer Dieskau and Richter, the best of the best💖
Oratoria incredibile. Meravigliosa Aria. Cantante Perfetto.
Piango ogni volta!! Ogni volta....
God bless you all
This theme always brings tears to my eyes. Always.
I was transfixed from the very first note ... Thank you so much for shaing. If - after listening to this one doubts Bach's love of God I'm afraid "American Idol" has won
This aria and "Wir setzen uns mit tränen nieder" are the best from Bach's St. Mathew's Passion.
You feel the presence of God...
Oh my god,how I love thgis aria. Wonderful from Walter Berry. I also love Thomas Quasthoff's recording.
