The voice of Iestyn Davies makes me cry of joy ... and the trumpet of Alison Balsom "sings" with him divinely. Such a happiness is still possible in this world. Thanks to the music and all the musicians !
When I play this video for my classes on Music History, they almost faint away! "Divine" is an understatement! I wish people wouldn't forget the guy who CREATED the music, however. His name was Henry Purcell, and he was just as great as (gasp!) Handel! (Are you allowed to SAY this?!) And lived only a relatively few years-- amazing what he turned out-- including this piece. Sort of the Mozart of the Baroque period. Listen to the whole thing- "Come Ye Sons of Art"--- every part is almost unspeakable in its beauty. Congrats to all, especially Purcell!
I don't know how to describe this music, but all I can say sitting 7000 miles away somewhere in southern India, it was soul soothing and touched every cell in the body. Congratulations to this talented team.
Moved to tears on the middle piece. The way Alison Balsam and Iestyn Davies' passages meld together, balanced, beautiful in their expressions, and neither seeking to outdo the other but play glorious music together. I missed performing so much when I watched this. What a gift to the world. Thank you all.
What excellent musicians! A beautiful, crystal clear trumpet sound, as beautiful as Alison herself. Well, and the countertenor: first class! All credit to Trevor Pinnock, who masterfully recreates true Baroque music.
My goodness, I am head over heels in love with this wonderful young woman. I am 78 and 6,000 miles away, will of course never meet her, but I call on all the Gods on Olympus to grant her long life, good health, and happiness, and to clear the way for her continue to make magnificent music for forever and a day. She is so fantastic and wonderful!
wow @donald P Grant Iwonder how to be in love when you are already 78 yrs old? may you spent the remaining of your life happy and full of love. i hope I could be in love like you when Im 78 also and reach your age. btw im 46 right now and happily married
Yes Indeed! I am 67 and heartily agree she is quite adorable;.and of course to jhear her playing, and the music of Purcell in general, is absolute Heaven.
Alison is a superb ambassador for music from British composers! Her impeccable talent couples well with the talent of our finest composers and players, and leaves me proud to be British , even though I'm not proud of our politics! Well done Allison, and keep up the good work!
Tut mir leid
I don't have count of how many times I've listened to this video, and it never fails to put me in a better mood. Closing my eyes and listening to the vocal performance of Iestyn Davis together with the rest of the ensemble brings me to a place with less stress, fewer problems and an overall better state. Thank you all for this wonderful experience. Wish I could experience a live concert with you all
Except for the composer. Handle's music is royal music, made for the palace, for the king, therefore are lack of depth. People say Haydon composed 24 copies of the same symphony, but at least Haydon was the father of all symphonies.
what are you talking about? handel composed many different pieces in many different genres and even if he didn't that wouldn't mean his wonderful musick lacks depth
What impresses me about this young lady is how deeply she feels the music. It seems to come from deep in her soul and flow right out of the bell. Intense.
It's not just the stunning musicality and technique on display, it's the life enhancing effect it has. And I'm another one who keeps returning to this clip. Magical music making indeed!
All I can say is AWESOME. I played trumpet at school for the cadet band, as well as during my military service. This lady shows what can be done with this wonderful instrument. And she is beautiful as well. I have a wide spectrum of musical interests from death metal to classical, but this is just inspirational. Fantastic.

Alison is angelic; a gift from God. Inspiring millions of musicians around the world to seek perfection and share the beauty of music. Iestyn Davies and Trevor Penick too have contributed mightily. This rendition of Handel's Eternal Source of Light Divine is the greatest song in this world-truly this belongs before the throne of God and God himself.
What gorgeous and glorious musick! I could not restrain tears at Purcell's "Sound the Trumpet". England had these two enormous geniuses within a similar time period. How blessed were the English! Bravissimi Balsom, the singer Davies, Pinnock and the English Consort.
What a magical, wonderful, precise recording session. Such an amazing musical balance and respect between the natural trumpet, voice, conductor and orchestra. I also watched the film several times in order to understand the church recording setup. Just mind blowing! Ms. Balsom is an exceptionally artist.
I heard this piece of music for the first time on Something Understood, presented by Mark Tully on Christmas Day and I was floored by the beauty and perfection. I'm not sure who was playing it, but I found this one on TH-cam and I cannot believe I am so late to this and the Alison Balsom phenomenon. I keep playing it over and over again and each time I am so moved by it. I've listened to other versions that are also beautiful renditions and technically superb, but it is this one I keep listening to. It's one of those rare recordings where everything falls into place and you are transported by the perfection. It is as near to perfection as any piece of music ever heard. The way her playing and his singing complement each other and how they listen and understand is amazing as is the breath control. The ensemble playing is exemplary. Also, hats off to the director for filming and editing this video so well. Great to see geniuses at work without showing off or detracting from the musicians. Many, many thanks for sharing this amazing video recording, I can't thank you enough.
Absolutely heavenly and mesmerizing!!! Iestyn sings like an eternal angel and Alison's mastery of the trumpet is beyond compare. Together with Trevor, they earn the right to perform before the Lord himself. So divine!!!
I just tripped over this. At 5:10 I almost burst into tears recalling me and my then wife performing Eternal Source of Light Divine. I haven't played my trumpet in years and this reminded me of what I've missed. Stunning.
The warmth of sound from that baroque trumpet is Amazing! The style and skill Alison Balsom displays with that instrument is as beautiful to watch as the sound is to listen to. Bravo. Encore!!
22/10/2022 Can't help but come back again to listen to Iestyn and Alison. I swear that even the angels in heaven come down to earth just to hear them perform!
I cannot help commenting on this piece of music and video. The best music of them all. The trumpet, the countertenor, the harpsichordist, the Handel, the Purcell, and the team, they all come together for the music for a very short time, which makes it more attractive. Thank you all. I will play it many more times.
I don't know how she does it. She takes a perfectly straight note several seconds long and turns it into a thrilling line. No vibrato. No contorted dynamics. Only a gentle almost imperceptible swell and fade. And that's only one of the many arrows in Alison Balsam's quiver of musicality. Another inadequate metaphor: she turns dry notes on paper into golden listening via the alchemy of her playing.
Alison Balsom is not only an amazing musician, but the stylistic integrity with which she with amazing virtuosity is simply stunning. Bravo to Ms.Balsom. Pinnock and Davies are also flawless in their incredible performances. Wonderful music very well performed by all.
I remember growing up seeing her as a little girl on Little house on the prairie, now grown into this beautiful woman who plays such beautiful, passionate music with her trumpet 🎺 ❤. Bravo to her & her fellow musical friends for playing such beautiful music 🎶 !!! Love to meet her someday...

I agree. I have listened to scores and scores of countertenors, altos and sopranos singing it. Mr Davies really does bring a certain "lustre" (to borrow from Mr Handel's libretto 😉) to the piece. Together with Ms Balsom, and the entire ensemble really, this is absolutely EXQUISITE 💐

Congratulations to all you performers: this impels Purcell's music into the twenty-first century. Like Alison Balsom's clarino trumpet, Iestyn Davies's upper-register male voice is breathtakingly flawless.
Thank you Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert, Alison Balsom thank you for using your God given talent to bless the world! Thank you all for keeping Handel and other great t Barogue Masters' music alive!
Superb! I should think this is as close as it gets to being authentic, performed beautifully on baroque instruments. As well as the faultless and wonderful Alison, the vocal soloist and all other musicians are as good as it gets, thank you for making me happy x
HOW ON EARTH do you play that trumpet with such virtuosity??? And I mean how on EARTH, as surely you’re an angel playing in HEAVEN, not really here at all!!! Beautiful music making with my beloved Trevor too... THANK YOU! I have requested your recording of Eternal Source to be played as I lie on my deathbed. Seriously. And it projected me into reading Jane Glover’s Handel in London. THANK YOU again and again. All of you make one believe in life, beauty, and music, again.
Listening to performers like Ms. Balsom makes me want to practice. Through out school I was always behind 2 very talented lady trumpeters. Her performances are just wonderful.
Oh how i love this music,The Globe is so beautyful.AlisonBalsom is such a nice, beautyful Lady. She,s like an Angel playing her trumpet in heaven. But al the other musicians and the conductor are phantastic as well. The third piece moves me to tears. What a wonderful ensemble.thanks for uploading.😇😘
Julliard perfection under outstanding accustics for all musicians...great performance and, should be required viewing to all academia seeking careers in music...these artists employ their skills to greatness and emulate a dying craft for devotees of superb classic music...may just stimulate young talent to pursue the finest scores worldwide!
I have always loved the trumpet and this young lady is the best I’ve heard. I was impressed with the sound the ancient trumpet made, beautiful. May she enjoy and share her talent for years to come.
Wow, such musical perfection (or as close to it I think one human can get) What a joy it is to listen to her play and what joy it must bring her to share her talent. I must also give credit to her manager for producing these videos, showcasing both her awesome talent and taking full advantage of her looks. it is, after all, theater and one must sell the product to a wide audience, the proceeds of which make it possible for all of us to enjoy her music.
You can’t extol Alison’s talent enough. She’s popularised her art genre without compromising one note at the behest of commercialism. As a musician, I can’t fault her playing. Her articulation and tone are sublime. As an audience member, I know I’m going to enjoy the kind of quality I’ve experienced with other great soloists, such as Vengerov and Fleming.
I have been listening to a lot of Alison Balsom music. I like how on this one you did some introduces to the music and have some explaining. Your emotions of excitement and passion for your playing really came through how you talked about your work!
I don't know if you musicians know this, but your efforts here seem to be inspired by something bigger than mankind. This music touches the soul. It must be the music of heaven!
its breath taking and also soothing to hear such a beautiful instrument like the trumpet just singing and blending with the violins and not over powering it this was truly soothing
The voice of Iestyn Davies makes me cry of joy ... and the trumpet of Alison Balsom "sings" with him divinely.

He visto este video 1000 veces. No me canso de gozarlo.

Wonderfull Alison, great player and what a wondefull accent! a pleasure to listen to your music but also to your speaking!
This should be broadcasted worldwide when this pandemic is behind us.
I cant go a day without listening to Alison and the tenor. And compliments to all the accompanying players. Lifts my spirits to the sky
Hearing her gush about Pinnock is absolutely adorable. And correct, I might add.
Very Informative
I have been listening to a lot of Alison Balsom music. I like how on this one you did some introduces to the music and have some explaining. Your emotions of excitement and passion for your playing really came through how you talked about your work!
Too marvelous for words. She can hold her own in any company.
You're right
