This was *super* interesting! It's so great to see you analysing your old videos and making commentary because you can actually explain what you were thinking at the time and the advice you would give yourself to address the things you did wrong *and* mention the things you think you were doing right. Really great video. Thanks for sharing! :D

This really motivates me to study Japanese more and more! I'm using Japanese basically everyday here, but I progress really slowly so maybe I gotta get a book and study by myself a little, especially grammar... Or maybe I'm just too impatient with myself..
Anyway thank you for the video 💕 Keep it up!!

Loved it! I like how you break down your past mistakes/discomforts and think about how you could have addressed them. Very helpful for a beginner! I'm definitely waiting on that lists of podcasts / books / news recommendations. Even in the wiiiiide world of TH-cam, it's not that easy to find exactly what you need: just like your channel a few months ago, I only discover BilingualChika this week totally at random. Imagine! Great video!

tbh, back when i was around 9 or 10 and i was learning chinese, i found a channel on TWC that talked about news, travel, business, etc. Thinking back on it, it was insane how fluent i was in talking about the chinese stock market, but the only basic conversational phrase i knew by heart was "women bu yao kafei". Maybe its because i was younger that things like that worked for me, just listening and sounding out what i heard and checking it later, but i think im in that weird gray spot where i need to immerse myself like that in japanese to push myself out of this weird beginner phase? like for example, I've read a lot of medical blogs so i can say things like 関節炎、手根管症候群、連鎖球菌性咽頭炎 and so on, but i do as you mentioned in the first part and add english words or phrases when i dont know something aka the false bilingual thing. slowly, im starting to be able to use words to describe what im talking about, like a while ago today i was talking to myself about my carmex, and i said "口クリーム" instead of lip balm in english or with the proper japanese words. i honestly dont know the point of this comment anymore. i guess i just wanted to comment, smh.

I might take your advice. I've started learning Japanese at university now and am in an intermediate class, but I feel like the vocab lists that we are given are counter productive as we are learning words but not how to use them in sentences. I also feel like my particle usage is not the best and I often get confused between which i should be using.

    • @kemushichan
      @kemushichan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

That's exactly how I felt when I started trying to learn on my own outside of class. No curriculum will be perfect for EVERY student so it's really exciting to mkke the learning your own.

I felt the same. Having to use genki for class i felt like there were so much vocab but I had no clue how to use some of them that i just avoided new vocab at all cost but when i solo studied i still had that problem because i would have to struggle to look for resourses to teach me.

Of the couple foreigners who are living in Japan that I've come across recently on youtube, I love to check in on your channel and continue to see that you take your Japanese studies so seriously! It's very motivating and inspiring. Of course this is in no way to shame those other youtubers for uploading more vlogs/storytimes/etc. instead of language-content, they're free to focus their own channels on what they desire, but I respect that you return to your past mistakes and are comfortable enough with us to critique yourself. It helps!

I do like this format of you reviewing old video diaries, because I feel like there may be a few things you forgot you were doing wrong, or didn't know you were doing wrong, at the time that could be really beneficial for others. You are so natural at the language, you may have forgotten the little things you used to do as you were learning that you grew out of. We, as viewers and Japanese learners, can hear you explain these things so they can work through them if we are having similar struggles. =) thanks for doing videos like this and dealing with cringe so we can learn! lol

When you discuss your fear of wa and ga and the effect it had on your sentence construction, specifically where clausal clarity is concerned... I totally get this!! I'm studying Korean, but I have a similar fear of those subject/predicate particles in Korean. Ahhhhh!!! lol I think I will tackle Japanese when I have a firmer grasp on Korean. Their similarities seem to be in my favor.

When I first heard you on the Tofugu podcast, you said that one of your learning methods was audio diaries, and I was in such awe. "She's so self-assured that she doesn't mind listening to herself. There's no way in heck that I could do what she does. I guess confidence comes naturally for some folks." But
after today's video, it seems like you don't breeze through it without any self-consciousness. That gives me a little hope that I might actually be able to try it.
How did you get over any initial self-consciousness to actually start doing it? How do you keep powering through that feeling while you're actually doing it?

  • @mayacold8263

Your dreams were really big at that time. It’s crazy to hear how well your audio diary shows your improvement from the presentation. I think what’s interesting is that your mistakes in the audio diary were from just not absorbing native Japanese. And that’s a big thing everyone needs to know. You can clearly see it now. For me I’m inspired to do audio diaries too. Instead of saying maaaa or ettooo it really matters that you take time to just talk regularly. Words I struggle to use are words that are hard for me to understand even in English these days. I just read an article in class about a word from a 文化庁調査 about カタカナ語 that has been seen to be misunderstood without the kanji by it. One word that made me go HUH was the word コンソーシアム haha.

I don't feel it is a weird video. However, it may be because I had to review videos of myself presenting or interpreting in American Sign Language (my AA degree) for years. When you said "... but I am an expert in my own cringe," I internally screamed "OH MY GOSH, YES!!!" because I felt so much truth in that statement about myself. Thank you for including that moment! I do love the grammatical points you included also. I look forward to seeing more if these videos if you are open to sharing them with us.

I think I commented on a previous video that I was planning on taking Japanese in college... Well, the time has come!
I really do think that starting an audio diary would be very useful, since I don’t have any Japanese speaking friends, once my class starts. I’m also going to take Chinese, and I think that verbally practicing the tones through speaking (even if it is to myself) would be great.

I've done something similar looking back at some old footage of myself speaking Japanese and cringing a lot, but I don't think I'd have the courage to show it like you did! By the way, a small correction. Companies most definitely 投資する in other companies. Look up corporate venture capital (CVC). These days most large companies have CVC groups making minority investments in startups. Sometimes we say ベンチャー企業に出資する instead of 投資する but 投資する is definitely also used.

Wow! I'm a "native" Japanese speaker(otherwise known as half Japanese lol) but this was really helpful! And I definitely agree with the listening to native clips! I started out watching AKB48 shows with eng sub. so I would get the listening and try to piece together the meanings too. I would definitely suggest variety tv shows in Japan for people wanting to get more listening and word association in (if they were comfortable with it) as the text on screen really helps with vocab in my opinion.

Can I shadow you? Haha! #DeadSerious I may have to start doing audio diaries... I probably will do it when I'm at home...by myself... Plus I have an issue where I blank when I go to speak Japanese so I think practicing that way will help me to get into the habit of just saying what I need to say on the spot rather than trying to think through (conjugate, add particle here, etc.)
Then one day I'll be sharing my cringe worthy files with everyone too! (^_^) Thanks for inspiring me every day!

Regarding the MEXT scholarship. Isn't it for applying for schools that teach with the medium being Japanese? If so, how is possible for a Japanese beginner to be able to reach a point in fluency where he/she can study a different topic in Japanese. If not, are there courses in English? (Also. Is it really a good idea to do your entire major in Japanese?)

The MEXT scholarship is available to English speakers who do not speak Japanese, as well. You would have to find and English taught program in Japan (which is very possible).
