Hi! My name is Loretta, a girl from the U.S. who moved to Japan! I'm here on the MEXT scholarship program as a graduate student, studying to get a Masters in Business Administration. Here are some answers to common questions:

crimson riot Oh wow, I forgot about this. Its been 3 years, I've gotten used to the routine and I'm fairly good at speaking/writing/reading Japanese now. Their documents stuff still annoy me though but that's Japan lol.

10k for a dentist WTF? You got gold teeth or something?
ive spent roughly that for cavities, redoing a botched dental job, and braces. i've spent about 6 grand total recently just on dental care.
Most people who stay away from the dentist longer than 3 years end up with $3,000 or more in necessary dental treatment due to improper homecare and the American diet. When you realize 1 Crown is on average $1300 you see how easy it is to rack up a 10,000 bill when you dont care for your teeth.

Have you ever had a deep cleaning? A tooth extraction? A crown? How about a $6000 implant? Yes, one implant! Why be a neuro-surgeon & pay phenomenal liability insurance when you can be a dentist much quicker & make a killing in no time? I know there are good souls out there who do free dental work too. That isn't the majority. Dental fees are murder-1, esp. for the elderly, at least if your teeth matter to you.

The middle name thing is sooooo true. I moved there for half a year for school, and had to open a bank account for my scholarship. I put my middle name down because that’s what I’m used to doing, and they were oddly confused by it?? It was also on my school documents, so at events they’d sometimes call me by my middle name, or my middle name became my last name, or any other combo of names. It was weird and confusing.
xonikkee I have a similar problem and I live in Germany. I am Portuguese and have like 5 names and 1. No-one knows your full name 2. Always get called by a wrong name 3. Different names everywhere (I have a completely different surname when going to doctor's) 4. Business letters, mails, -> always addressed to the wrong name/ wrong spelled name

Maybe you can help me here.. I will be there soon and need to open a bank account. I have a middle name, but I actually get called by my middle name, not my first name.. should I out down my middle name or my first name even though I'm not called by it?
Wish I had known about this before I moved here. One of the most under-shared tips when you move to Japan is to not buy new stuff! So many people come to Japan, buy all new stuff, and where does it go when they leave? To the resale groups and stores. There's a wonderful Facebook group (well, groups) called Tokyo Sayonara Sales the Original and Osaka Sayonara Sales. People sell awesome, well cared for furniture for super cheap because they are leaving Japan! They end up buying new because people don't know about these FB groups when they come, so they go to the expensive stores, stretching an already limited budget. There's no point, there's tons of stuff, furniture, household and kitchen items, heaters and fans available every day on those groups!
Good advice! Sucks about the medical bills! "We learn from our mistakes" yeah, but those mistakes cost us a shitload of cash lol

The comment about pants and shoes is so true! I’d recommend bringing lots of bras if you’re large chested, and if you have a larger body, just bring an entire wardrobe. Lose as much weight as you can (healthily) before moving there. Especially if you’re a woman over 5’6”. Shopping for clothes is going to be very difficult otherwise (as well as other challenges you would never experience as a larger person in the US).

I'm planning to move to Japan for language school and job hunting, so this video is super helpful! Often times I get restless about my goals; I also have student loans to pay, and part of me always wants to move asap, but your financial tips are a strong reminder to keep myself in check and stick to my plan of paying off debt BEFORE moving. You are THE BEST ! I watched this years ago but my 16 year old is planning her gap year in Japan [ with her Oji-san ] so this is just perfect for her to see . Having her father tell her all this from when I lived in Japan is not as good as your video , kudos.
Great advice! I'm living in Japan right now as a student and I definitely agree with your point about moving to Japan as soon as possible! Even if you're not planning on staying in Japan for years and years and you just come to study abroad for a year it's best to do it sooner rather than later when you might have a lot more responsibilities and people who might depend on you.

I really want to go as a student so can I ask: is it expensive to move there as a student? Is the visa covered by the university?
@@mymeloluvs hi! Usually your visa will be covered by your university in Japan :) as to the costs it depends on what you're used to and where in Japan you'll be living. Tokyo is way more expensive than Toyama for example but i think its doable as a student.

it looks like for most of these stuff the US is guilty.. I thank God I was born and raised in a European country where you dont pay cosmical amounts of money for doctors and such, university is cheaper so almost no one gets in debt because of it etc... but the thing about the hair.. yes, I can relate!
That’s nothing. People put ingodly amounts of money into their dental. It’s unbelievable. And if you are poor you can only rip them out and then suffer bone loss to the point you can’t even wear dentures. Yea it’s just great

Always thought the same. Born in asia and able to graduate debt free in the most expensive university where im from though living cost had to be tightly controlled it was all worth. Medical bills here are also free/cheap for residents tho I believe we dont have enough worldclass doctors here

I'd recommend bringing undergarments from one's own country also.

How long did it take you to prepare from your initial point of saving all the way to departing?
Do you recommendation on a nice sum of money we should save? Also should we exchange currency before going?

What a refreshing video
I'm so worried about hair. I have natural hair that I wear straightened and I'm sure the sweat is gonna kill that fast. We'll see though. i may just learn how to style it natural.

I'd say thank goodness for natural hair videos on TH-cam, but the community has fallen apart over the years. Trial-and-error is probably the safest route. Or spend tons of cash on overpriced products. Don't become a product junkie!!

When you mentioned the dental care, ironically that is what I’m doing right now! So far I’m towards the end of my treatment plan....😆so by the end of this year I should be ready to move to Japan!😊

These were some really good advice. I really regret not following through on moving to Japan in my 20's. All I heard was my mom's voice in my head callime useless and unable to do shit so I got depression instead. Today I know better but I'm not in a position to even travel anywhere. Had I listened to myself back then, I would probably have been much better of, or at least have had the experience of living somewhere else.
So my advice is to go do the thing! Don't let insecurities limit you. It's scary to leave something familiar and start anew. Be brave. That's all I can say.

This was awesome. I have family in Japan and go there at least 3 times per year. I have been traveling to Japan off and on since 1986 with the majority being done 2002 to present. You are awesome and so positive I will have to have my daughters (3) watch this video. Two of my daughters go to school in Japan and you would be a great role model for them. Maybe I will see you on one of my trips. By the way my Japanese is crap -- so sad!!
