    Markus, on the blackmagic there’s no need to cut the rubber covers, you can just slowly and carefully pull them out and store them and push them back in if you want them again

    I LOVE how you say "1080p is fine for YT." You're right! Thank you, Markus. Yes, I'd like to pick up a used Samsung NS500, is that it? But for now, and for what I'm doing for YT my stupid Android cell phone or my Canon eos200 with a kit lens seems to be doing a fine job! I just have a wired lav mic. I really appreciate what you do here on YT.

    I didn't really comment on the last video because I figured it was a simple mistake; however, what needs to be pointed out is that "Cinema Cameras" typically do not process the image coming out of them in any major way. They do this so that the look can be controlled in a movies post production pipeline. 99% of the sharpening and contrast are processed elements the Sony, Samsung and dozens of other cameras footage are done to give those camera a predefined look for the consumer; however, while the Blackmagic camera's do have their own look their image has so much more information, particularly when it is shot in 12 bit RAW, that is has the ability to be made to look nearly identical to all those other cameras. While one can't change the edge sharpening in the Blackmagic camera it self, one can add a color matching LUT that can be baked onto the final footage if one wanted to. With that Said I agree 100% that if one doesn't want to deal with the hassle of LUTs and post production then one should find a camera that has a look they like, and use it.

      Yes I know but its not something I and most of my followers don't want to have to do. Anyone can do great things with anything if they try hard enough, but this channel is about simplicity and ease of use.

      @@MarkusPix I agree! These cameras are not for your use case! But it is not fair to be comparing colours out of the cameras side by side. I understand the point of you not wanting to do any unnecessary work, which I totally agree with. However, it is a bit like comparing apples and pears, and might throw some people off.

    • @kadmow
      @kadmow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If that were truly the case none of the "cinema" cameras would output anything but a RAW log file... "Leave 100% of post production decisions to the production team" - etc, but they still (mostly) have a baked in set of export options - trying to be one size fits all...
      Horses for Courses - youtube is not "the big screen" - even there "studio requirements" are often "peer pressure driven" with some "techno snobbery"... lol..
      Where else on youtube does a guy randomly give away a non sponsored BM...USSR....6k ? (jk)
      If someone wants to get into shooting and editing Video they can try colour grading the output of lesser cameras to see how they like the technical back end work, or pick a set of cameras which produce acceptable output to work with as is.

      I think this his review of these cameras because they are marketed to consumers $2k or $4k for a body is not that much but you need the skills of pros to color grade the video I think that’s all he was saying about it

    Ive been shooting video professionally for almost 20 years ... the only camera I use these days in the Panasonic GH5 (I used 4 of them on most shoots). 100% reliable - can shoot all day at 4K with no problem. Cheap when compared to other cameras! Even though the GH5 is over 3 years old it still compares very favourably to newer cameras from other brands.

My niece thought she was going to need a $1000+ camera for her TH-cam channel, but after learning what she was trying to do I helped her pick out a perfect, used & complete camera kit (body, lens, power solutions [batter/wall], and computer interface [For live streaming]) for right around $400.

    Don't know about you guys commenting here, but i have been following Markus channel for some time now, and find his content very inspirational. Have never been a photographer or anything close. Always bought compact cameras or superzoom ones. In other words - cheap stuff. But was always fond of good pictures. Some time ago decided to buy an entry level mirrorless camera. At that time only Canon m100 was on sale and got it. Did not know and still don't know what to with it, but after watching Markus' videos, decided to start experimenting and look for lenses. I know he is not particularly a Canon fan, but his own words are: Photography is to know what you doing with the camera you have. Happy New Year Markus and youtubers!

But to date my best looking work has been done with a t5i lol. I won the cannon gx7 Mark iii in your Holiday giveaway and that’s a real pocket camera! I love it and thanks so much it’s like new! I wonder sometimes if I am the only one who still prefers camcorders for video! I love my DVX-200...it runs all day, never complains, focuses well and was cheap (ish!). I think DSLR (hic) manufacturers have done a real job selling mirrorless lenses that cost more than a decent camcorder, along with bodies that overheat, eat batteries and demand a fortune in rigs, screens, mics etc., to make them any bloody good!! Good to know you still appreciate the goodness of a camcorder! Thanks for the info and the grins!

    I love your videos and we’re from the same generation so I dig where you’re coming from. I’ve been doing this a long time. The black magic is for somebody who understands color science and can apply the proper color transforms. If not the image looks mediocre. But if you do it right it’s phenomenal.

    Hi Markus, this is is just another great example why I subscribed to you channel: you’re telling the truth.
    After endless hours of running through reviews I ended up buying a LUMIX S1H which I really love - not for the 6K, but for the color science in 4K.
    Anyway, I tried out my Nikon D810 video capabilities just for fun (never was in video before), and the results are stunning: great colors, high reuse of my lens, and I could even make it ACES capable with some tweaks of the picture profiles. I only I had known before!
    Fully agree with you to go for a dedicated video camcorder, instead! Considering all the additional stuff I had to purchase for my S1H (rig, handle, manual focus, ...) I could have easily afforded a Sony or Panasonic large frame video cam.

    So true, multi-camera (different lenses, HD) is so much easier to shoot, as long as you have flippy screens (or separate monitors) to see what they are shooting. Your videos are also fun to watch, thanks.

    You are, in all honesty, one of the most down-to-earth, easily understood, teachers I have listened to.
    I would LOVE the opportunity, if even through email, to throw questions at you. I am in the market for a camera (I would say new, but everything I do now is on an iPhone 8’s Plus, as that is all that is in the budget), and am so torn on what to get, and keep switching my path, and it is getting frustrating!
    Love the videos, and keep ‘em coming!

    Videos for TH-cam =/= Cinematic Narrative Filmmaking. Both the BMPCC6K and Z CAM E2 F6 are designed for very specific and frankly limited "cinema" use. I don't think the intention from the start was ever to make a TH-cam friendly camera. That's why a video like this is just as important as a video hyping these cameras up. So that people can understand the specific intent of a camera and whether its something to buy or not. As a filmmaker the BMPCC6K would be a dream, since I have the benefit of having an immensely talented editor/color gradist. But its definitely not the kind of thing I'd want to use without a team in production. Those file sizes are not an every day use kind of thing. For a TH-cam video or vlog of some sort, 1080p with nice color is good enough. So I'd rather use either my Panasonic GH5 or G7 than one of the Blackmagic cameras.

    Great video as always Markus. You are right, the camera doesn't really matter. I used to record RAW unsharpened video footage with my 5D Mark II + Magic Lantern, it takes a while to process but I feel like it makes me think the shots and I feel like a Hollywood director whenever I'm using it. On the other hand, I repaired an old RX100 Mark I and I like taking it everywhere and just recording videos of the cool stuff around me and my friends. I bought an NX Mini a year ago and I really liked it, but I think the Sony is a better fit for me, I just gifted that camera to my sister after she brought some beautiful landscape photos she took in Iceland, you would be surprised how great those pictures look, and the camera itself was only 100€ with the 9mm prime on it. I really appreciate your videos and I like them a lot. Keep up the good work!

    Good on you Markus! Nice to see a breath of fresh air that doesn't buy into all the marketing hype on cameras with 4K or higher. The majority of people that buy these cameras don't even own a 4K monitor to edit these files on, let alone a 6 or 8K monitor! 70% of the public don't own a 4K television. How ridiculous it is tif you're not a professional cinema filmmaker that might need a camera like these as a B-cam anre wasting their time & money. You also must consider lenses, on camera monitor or recorder, lights, audio, plus al the accessories you need to make it work for editing. I'm not knocking these 2 cameras, they're both good, but the question if I'm shopping for a new or used camera is... what do I truly need 4, 6, or and 8K camera for?

  • @DannyTaddei
    @DannyTaddei 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Usually, you’ve got it nailed. I agree with you and it’s fun to watch you because I like hearing people that get it. On the BMPCC 6k you don’t get it because you don’t value color grading for what it is. For your needs, the pocket 6k is not the right camera and that is fine. For anyone that wanted to use color to help tell a story, the pocket 6k is amazing. You’re a smart guy and many of your audience are smart too. Those of your audience that want to shoot real film that tells the story as well as it can be told, the pocket 6k is the camera they need.
    Also, those tags of rubber on the side don’t need to be cut off. They pop out. Getting them back in would be a pain i the butt, however they don’t need to be destroyed. I pulled mine out. Lastly, this is a cinema camera, not a cooking show Camera. It makes movies and those cameras need all kinds of things attached . I have a wireless focus puller, big screen so I can see my faults colors and all, and I want to swap it between mounts, gimbals and all so the color stays the same from screen to screen to not distract the audience for the most effective delivery.

    You are so right - I use an "old" RED DSMC1 - yes it has a 6K sensor - BUT - I bought it used for a great price (under 9000EUR) as a ready-to-shoot kit with lots of accessories - compact high quality V-mount batteries, rig, rails, plates/tripod plates viewfinder and so one - oh and 5 memory cards a 256GB.
    In addition I bought a used lens set (older Xeen lenses) - Well of course it's a "big" camera and I do it semi-prof. but it's enough for me - and despite the age the camera runs like a Swiss watch - especially for the money.
    Sure a kl. camera would have been enough but if I consider what I had to buy accessories to it I would be equally expensive - so I have a nice kit what works.
    Sometimes the used market spits out very good cameras - Regarding photo, I use an older D800 + "kit lens" - i.e. a 24-70 - and it runs ... sometimes the used purchase is worthwhile ...

    I understand what markus is saying. I owned the Zcam S6 and F6 and Sony A7iii and R4 and now i have couple of BMPCC 6K and a URSA G2.
    If you going to shoot with a blackmagic you should know what you're doing as it's for professionals,for £1740 you get a 6K 12BIT raw recording camera and free Davinci Resolve which cost £300. It's unheard,unbeatable value,raw codec very light and easy to work and ProRes options if you shoot TH-cam.
    The Zcams (which i sold) they are great cameras,especially the F6 but the Zraw as of right now is completely nightmare to work because is not supported,other than that the bodies are a dream but they need to be a rigged because those are CINEMA cameras,not point and shoot. The Sony's are ok for standard shooting but the 8BIT codec is trash,like really,if you mess your exposure goodbye,so bad,terrible terrible ! As photo cameras are number 1.
    This is a big conversation,i think markus had bad experience because he expect those cameras to be ready to use them out of the box but it cannot be as cinema cameras give you the option to choose how you want your image to look like.
    If you ask any professional to compare any Sony A7 with those cinema cameras they would laugh

I havent seen much of this on youtube, ill post my results!

    I considered these camera's among others and I think I share your opinions and likes haha, Camcorder's for the win in my books as well !! I'm still searching for the right fit but narrowing it down, my cpl older camcorders are doing the trick for now but would be nice to get more frames per second and some of the modern features would also be great to have . Great video , cheers and Happy New Year!!

    @MarkusPix, thanks for the straightforward, well-informed video!
    Using a Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro ISO with a small multiview monitor & an SSD to centrally record whichever cameras you're using might be something to consider - that way, you don't have to worry about overheating on the cameras, & you get a ready-to-edit Davinci Resolve project with ISOs from each camera source, as well as audio. You could even use it to record wirelessly with one of the Hollyland Mars systems.

    Hi Markus, I am recording classical music concerts every weeks with 5 Sony a6300 using a set up in 4K, and I can record more than 1:50 hours... And more... You are right, marketing is different to the real world... Thank you for your videos. Happy New Year to you both

      @@MarkusPix I am living in Seville (Spain) and at the moment it is not a problem (20 degrees into the concert Hall) I will tell you the new scenario when the summer will come (between 35 and 42 in July-August). The key is to keep the camera connected to the electrical network.

    Hi I am a happy owner of a Z Cam E2 4K, I use it for LiveStreams but setup the E2 can be complicated. I also used to own a Samsung NX1, which has uncropped 4K and has the same color feel as your NX500. I would recommend you to get a Samsung Nx1 and " hack" it into Development mode. This way you can have unlimited 4K recording tome, so no 30 min limit on the NX1 and do your recording as you need. It is light weight, easy to use and I think more suitable for your needs than these advanced BMPCC or Z Cam. Go for a second hand NX1 on ebay and I ensure you will love this much better in your setup.

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I gave my nx1 away in the last giveaway. Too big for me . The nx500 has the same guts as nx1 and is much smaller. Thats why I have of them and yes they can be set to run indefinitely also

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an FX6, FS5II, A7SIII, A7III, LS300 and more, but for full frame, I always end up grabbing my two A7Cs - they're so small and lightweight and I get the same amazing results. I personally have no need for 6K 8K 12K , especially for TH-cam, and I use multiple cameras, so I never have to crop in which never looks as good

Your advice has been extremely helpful to me as a (non) photographer and the next time $2,000 dollars falls into my lap I'm going to buy the Samsung NX500 . That is after I buy a Rode Mic and arm , Hahaha , Happy and Healthy New Year to you and Cara !

    I came back to watch a second time. The BMPCC Russian bit had me loling. I'd be a blessing to see that BMPCC in my kit, I'd honestly just use it for ProRes 1080 and 4k since thats all my camera can do. We don't post on youtube yet just because I'm trying to learn. Been collecting for years

    I think you are a genius. You have the skills to make a Polaroid do the job. You are amazing really. But you have to remember that everyone else might not have the ability you have. I seen another guy absolutely brilliant like you. He can make absolutely stunning video with a cellphone. You have so much talent that can make obsolete equipment work. I on the other hand who needs the ability to get the latest and greatest things just to begin to compete lol. Please keep this in mind. You are in the masterclass level 👌 💯 and I am grateful that you share your experiences with the world 🌎 Thank you

    Excellent video! But as a colorist and a bmpcc6k owner, the A7c doesn’t even come close to the BMPPC quality.
    The whole point of having a cinema camera is the pipeline around it.
    The 12bit raw supposed to look soft out of the camera because there is no profile applied onto it... that’s sensor data, NOT a final image.
    You HAVE to let a good colorist handle the footage or it just won’t work.
    But when you have a cinematographer who knows what he is doing and a colorist also. This camera smokes every Sony mirrorless alpha camera.
    I have 2 Sony alpha cameras and when the director wants to change the luma of something I just can’t. The codec is shit.

    Very True! You do need to know a little bit about editing and stuff for the BMCCCMPMPMPMETWER 6K. Im in process of learning that. So its a good cam for me. Not so great to the person that wants to grab, go and upload. Love the videos you make!! Keep it up!!

    I agree with you. I like small cameras that pack a lot of punch. I have the A7C and I had the ZV E-10. How about using an E10? It has a red frame on its flippy screen that tells you that it's rolling.

    I think that SL3/M50II can be good solution for this. SL3 with little lens weight 500 gram. Use 3x crop zoom. Quality exceeds 6k croped to 4k or 2k but you are limited to either 25 or 30 fps. Other then that amazing quality and easy to use and files are 100x smaller then those. And yeah those colors are superb, but you know that 😊

    great video Markus, learnt a lot from this one, i haven't done any video yet but its something i might in the future.
    i can't be arsed with raw either, when i was learning photography i wanted to keep it fun not have to edit stuff if i didn't want to, getting it right in camera knowing you shooting jpeg is more fun.
    other reason for jpeg i Use an M50 for wildlife so the raw files would kill the buffer any way.
