You're the man, @MarkusPix. The way you handle your shots is properly inspiring. Your videos are a breath of fresh air in this consumerist and extremely social world. Correct exposure is one of the best skills to learn when dealing with any cameras. This way, even if one has the latest and greatest, then suddenly uses a 50-year old Olympus, he/she will still get good shots. By the way, I still have my GM5. I purchased it 5 years ago when it was already on sale with the 2 lenses. I was in the store ready to purchase an RX100 and then I saw the little camera. I learned it was MFT and I had to go home to do some research about it. I got the black one. I use it for all sorts of photography, even with astro. I can even sell my GM5 body for more than my purchase price for the whole kit, but I am not going to do that. I am also amazed by capabilities of the tiny camera. I agree that sometimes, people look for things that they don't have. The GM5 is not for sale anymore but they keep on overlooking the G100, which I think is more of a resurrection of the GM5 but with much more features. It is very well-priced now. It has a good tapered grip and a rather punchy viewfinder. The body size is close to the GM5 minus the EVF bump. I know a couple of people who own the GM5 and purchased the G100 just because they feel the same as I do about the G100. I know the online community/gear reviewers bashed it but I just can't see why. Perhaps, if they own it, they would its value. It's selling like pancakes in India, though. Cheers from New Zealand and stay safe!

Your words at 9:08 about better not waiting for perfection remind me of the Tyler Durden quote: "I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say let's evolve!" Such an important message. You are truly a force for good in the world, Markus!
I have a Samsung nx mini with a 9-35mm lens, it's about the same size as the Panasonic and sometimes it's great just to break away from all the gear and still get great pictures.
I got it. And you are right. Keeping it centered on what matters. Tech geeks (guess I’m one too) can get lost in the delight of always having the newest thing, & the conversation gets a little cannibalistic, and insulated from what matters to most people-to most of their audiences! Thanks for staying real. Enjoy your approach.
You’ve probably been told million times, but I just love your enthusiasm. That coupled with your obvious knowledge makes for a very enjoyable and informative experience. Great stuff!
Boy does Tony Northrup need to watch this video. He writes off anything that’s not the latest and greatest. Love this video. It’s like a motivational speech.
@@notmyname8527 it's a shame he doesn't review anything that's not the latest and greatest anymore. He's all about full frame, pixel peeping and bokeh. Doesn't do his job well I'm my eyes. Fro is not much better.
I'm so glad I found you! I'm a small-handed woman and there are NOT enough TH-camrs talking about smaller tech, much less older tech and above all, that it's really about the ART! I have had full frame larger cameras that gave stunning images but I could NOT connect with them. If I can connect with a camera and make images that make me happy, I'm thrilled! I will search for the GM-5 though because I need/prefer a viewfinder built in. Would love to try it! Thanks for your video.
I was recently thinking about my M50 and why I keep it. It's fun, fairly compact and does what I need when the light is decent. Sounds similar to that. Fantastic video!
Watching this video 3 years later and still entertained by you Markus. Keep up the good work. I don’t like the people that tell you things like “No Luts, no Glory”. 😂
You’ve done it again. So good. There’s so much to try to learn in this world of video and photography and it’s easy to get caught up in specs and equipment and go broke! Your videos have been very enlightening and educational without all the intimidating tech speak (although obvs that’s there) that I always come away having learned something and feel better about my own journey into this world. Thank you and stay safe!
Lumix gm1 was my first mirrorless camera paired with 25mm f1.7...and i love it.. then someone stole it... so i bought the lumix lx100.. and later on bought the g85 and the 12-40 2.8 olympus lens. Ive been using it for 3 years now for paid gigs and youtube but right now im using an action camera for my main youtube camera.. the insta360 one r with 1 inch sensor. Its so small but packs really good features. Of course it is far from being perfect but since i know what im doing and use some lights (diy) i still get good videos out of it. And p.s. i dont shoot 5k (even though that action camera can do it) hehe..
I agree. That's generally true with today's gear, with some exceptions. For example, if you want to shoot a video in low light conditions or doing birds-in-flight photography then gear does matter.
Yeah, it's amazing that you created a photography channel for Cara. Even when you travel you photograph Cara only, she is the only subject of your entire "art/work". Since our granddaughters arrived they are the only subject i am interested in. I've just picked up a 2014 video camera, the Sony AX100, since i don't really keen to mess with the heavy FF gear I have. I fully agree, 1080 is absolutely a sweet spot for videography. The 50 Mbps files give me enough hassle. 100 Mbps 4K is too much. Even when I record 4K i convert the edited movie to 1080 and delete the original files.
Your amazing Markus! Don’t ever let the nerds and naysayers discourage you! Another fantastic lesson on life and camera history. It’s sad to see so many high quality small cameras disappear.
I share this man's philosophy. Probably the same reason that I shoot traditional "stick and string" archery bows rather than complex Olympic recurves or modern compound bows with their sights, pulleys, balance rods etc. The joy is in making the shot based mostly on your own efforts and instincts rather than relying so heavily on the technology. I would actually love an interchangeable lens digital camera for stills which only had adjustments similar to what film cameras had i.e. the ability to change aperture, shutter speed, ISO plus white balance. Add to this focus control (auto or manual plus focus area/point) and I'm happy :-).
In the last month, I have purchased 3 Panasonic GF2 cameras, and they have pretty much replaced my Nikon DSLR's because they take excellent pictures, yet (with the right lens) they fit in my shirt pocket!!! They are a little bit bigger than the GM1 though... But the price tag is MUCH smaller, lol.....

Thanks again Markus, I bought the Panasonic GX850 MFT camera as a travel camera to take to Scotland but then bought the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mkiii MFT and it is amazing.
Just ignore the moron trolls. That was an excellent thing to add "stop waiting for the perfect everything". Your photos are always amazing Markus, and yes, it's extremely inspiring :) thank you
Ultimately people will argue back and forth about camera specs - it's a lot of fun for a lot of people and it's hard to change someone's mind once it's made up. But te proof is in the pudding and this video demonstrates - without any equivocation - that high quality results can come from older, smaller and "less technically advanced" gear. There are poor quality videos being produced on the super high-end cameras. And as we see here, high quality video being produced on a much simpler camera. Job very well done!
I have this exact camera. I got it because "orange". LOL. And I also got it because of everything you said. Small. Lumix. Mirrorless. Interchangeable lens. Travel. And a great party camera. You can hang it off your neck while holding and drink and a plate of food. I've taken amazing photos of my skateboarding adventures, action shots and all with my GM1. And I bought the Lumix GM5 when I wore this one out. And I just got the Lumix G100 a few months ago. And that seems rather large now. Markus, you're a breath of fresh air. Hugs to you and Cara from Canada.
THIS...is the kind of TH-cam video series that makes me watch the whole shows I select on this channel. He tells it as being a person who lives life and supports his real interest in a hobby-career with a unique flair in his own way. "Good show!" as the British would say. "Jolly good show!"
After watching this video I've bought used gm1 for $160. I'm super happy with it! I would have never consider buying 8 year old without your input ;)! Thanks!
I'm with you on this. For professional portrait work, I use a 50.6MP full frame Canon; for professional casual shots, I use a 5D Markl III. For myself I use a 12.8 MP Canon 5D with a 50mm "nifty fifty," but for walking around and doing what I love, (street photography) it's a Ricoh GR III. I don't even have the luxury of interchangeable lenses- It's a fixed-focus 18mm with a 28mm equivalent. It's become the de facto street camera, and that's because it's so much fun to shoot with. Haruto Hoshi uses one, and he's an amazing photographer: I put him in the same league as Weegee for the candid nature of his Tokyp shots. I started wandering there. Sorry. Anyway, great video. ..Joe
i can totally relate to this, my first cam was a M50 i was totally happy with it, did make great pics and vids with it, but then i watched all these camera channels and bought different expensive cams for better results, soon i realized i just should keep the m50 it did everything i wanted,, I could saved so much time and mnoney. I have g9 now with a big ass lens, great camera but its to big and heavy. i never take it out with me because of that, it just collects dust now.
I still use a GX-7 and have no problems with its output :) What I like the most is it's portability, I ride a motorcycle and it packs in such a small space!
The advantage I see (and the reason I enjoy shooting with smaller cameras) is that it's less gear to lug around and you're not worried or obsessed about gear. This is why when I'm doing things (other than specific photography tasks like portraiture or landscapes) I prefer either a small camera or my regular camera and ONE lens (a travel zoom). I don't have to think about gear. I have one lens and one camera. The smaller cmaeras just make it more enjoyable because they don't remind you you have a camera with you (as many of the small cameras can fit in your pocket and they're basically "not there" but they are if you want to shoot something).
@@johnsmith-gs4qf it's just crazy because the files are too big and for a travel vlogger that's a nightmare. 8K will be the biggest nightmare for some content creators, were will they store it all, I wonder 😂😂😂
@@RJinspire very true rj but you can also Downscale your video. For example: shoot in 8k , edit video and save in 1080p or whatever frame works best. Your videos resolution will be amazing and you will have the capability to use 8k / etc

im using a sony a5100 for taking pics and could not be more happy... Last time i purchased a cam was those kodaks you had to crank before taking a pic lol..
have two of them and really like them as B and C-cam. the 1080p looks good with great lenses as you said. only problem I ever encountered was an overheating issue while using wifi-preview in high temps. if you want to improve the grip get one plastic from sony for their small cameras. can't remember which model but fits perfectly to the GM1 and is a nice add-on to improve ergonomics of this mini camera.
Man ..... thanks so much for this video. I'm feeling less alone now. After more than 40 years of some serious photography with all kinds of gear, from Linhof, Hasselblad to Minox, I decided a few years ago to get rid of all the huge camera systems. I even dumped my privately owned full frame system and started using MFT. Amongst them the GM1 and GM5. The smallest and beautifully manufactured little cameras. Yes the GH5 and G9 are heavier and more bulky, but still small compared to what I used. So happy with my decision. Got a lot of disapproval from my nerdy tech friends, but the ones that actually have seen my work are really surprised by the high quality of the output. That's what counts for me ....
I prefer a large heavy camera, i get better steadier results with weight. I never owned a camera without a viewfinder, Looking through a viewfinder immerses oneself into the image. Also, love listening to the shutter mechanism when i shoot. Fake shutter sound, is like these new cars with fake exhaust sounds.. I don't get it. However, i get it when kids mount cardboard to their bicycles with a clothespin to get that Motorcycle sound when the cardboard hits the spokes. DISCLAIMER: I was one of those kids. I am now an adult with a Harley.
I have a 60 year old vintage minolta lens that my father gave me from when he was in the Navy. I relate to the sense of accomplishment you describe when I nail a shot on that lens.
Thank you for making a simple video showing us how to create great work without having to spend a fortune. I love the simplicity you create and the advice you give. Love all your videos!
I love my GM1. It goes everywhere that I do and it is by far the most enjoyable camera to use that I have ever taken photos with. Thanks Markus for your enthusiastic videos and vast knowledge of photography.
Marcus, when i need to remind myself what it's all about i watch this video of you talking about the point of living. I feel like you are speaking from inside my own mind and heart. Thank you for the spiritual and emotional and creative jolt.
I completely agree with you mate! I used to shoot with heavy Canon bodies and L series lenses. Got great results don't get me wrong but they were terrible for travel and wanting to keep things light weight. In 2015 I swapped to Olympus OMD cameras and the wonderful M.Zuiko lenses and life is much easier and better for my photography. It's such a pleasure to see older gear like the GM1 producing amazing results even in 2021. I'll be sure to keep my eye open for one at some point. Great work mate, keep it up!

I truly dig your philosophy Markus! A simple solution to a given problem is often much better than complexity - all things considered. Speaking of using older stuff - I love shooting film on my old FM2, F5, Yashica Electro, ME Super: loading the film, the sound of the camera mechanisms, reviewing the slides and negs - and ya gotta' take your time and *think* about the shot; a totally different experience than digital. Once again you make a great point that few will declare. Keep up the great content! -Bill
Last weekend I went out in the backyard on a dewy morning with an old Olympus C 740 UZ. That thing has ridiculously good macro and super macro modes. Dew drops on a rose bud made for a stunning capture. They are 20 bucks on eBay. The newest camera I have is a 5D Mk II. Yeah, you can enjoy life with what you have… if you use it!
Great video Markus - the minimalist approach is a true trademark of an innovator, and it's what so many people miss. Thanks for keeping up the good work, and inspiring people to think outside the box.
The message is so very important that it is priceless. Thank you Marcus...for reminding us the joy of simple and small things...happiness comes from inside and not by owning the latest tech.
Well I belong to the few crazy but unpretentious people planning on small fun projects shot on Super 16 film. Got a humble modded K-3 and I tweaked and modded the s*** out of it. Can't beat the look of real film and modern color neg looks amazing - IF you are into it. Using a 30-40 year old camera, working around a ton of limitations and obstacles, it's all worth it because the end product looks so awesome and, I know you agree: there's that feel of "I actually shot that!". Well I love digital technology for a thousand reasons, but knowing your stuff = framing, lenses, focus, lighting and exposure and editing is what really matters. Not to mention what you are shooting (talent, screenwriting or in case of youtube what you are talking about). Thanks for this.
Can we take a second to appreciate the shirt Markus is wearing? That thing is awesome. Oh and I totally agree with this philosophy. I grab videos with whatever I have on me at the time. Little pocket camera is next up on my list of things to buy!

Your words at 9:08 about better not waiting for perfection remind me of the Tyler Durden quote: "I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say let's evolve!" Such an important message. You are truly a force for good in the world, Markus!
I have a Samsung nx mini with a 9-35mm lens, it's about the same size as the Panasonic and sometimes it's great just to break away from all the gear and still get great pictures.
you should check out his videos of samsung nx cameras he loves them
Your lighting is ❤️. Lighting makes a huge difference, regardless of what camera you use (except those cheapo knock-offs of course).
Tell me about it I used a cheap knock off once and .... well..... it’s now in the bin and set on fire and destroyed to ensure it’s never used again
@@AndreRees Exactly what I said. Regardless of what camera you use, except those cheapo knock-offs.
I was thinking the same thing! Or Fro knows photo, et al....
Tony Northrup is a reviewer. Markus is a photographer/Videographer. Both are doing their jobs well :-)
@@notmyname8527 it's a shame he doesn't review anything that's not the latest and greatest anymore.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Generally: gear doesn't really matter; it's all about how you look at things and how you use what you have :-)
yeah, the amount of junk produced today with pro gear attests that...
I agree. That's generally true with today's gear, with some exceptions. For example, if you want to shoot a video in low light conditions or doing birds-in-flight photography then gear does matter.
@@nightcoder5k yeah, but you can also find hd with optical stabilisation, no need for 4k plastic...heh
Story telling is first!
It depends on the subject! Have fun shooting wildlife with your phone! :-)
The Philosophical Photographer….Your personality and exuberance for life shines strong.
I love the colours that come out of Lumix cameras, that's why I started with a G85. Saved my ass off and got a G9 :). Still have the G85 :)
Great video on that Panasonic G85. The only con I can think of is the auto-focus is a little slow.
Well said. One word "Experience is the best teacher". You are a great teacher and philosopher. 10/10
You’re going to single handedly save the MFT system with this video
I have basic bows also
In the last month, I have purchased 3 Panasonic GF2 cameras, and they have pretty much replaced my Nikon DSLR's because they take excellent pictures, yet (with the right lens) they fit in my shirt pocket!!! They are a little bit bigger than the GM1 though... But the price tag is MUCH smaller, lol.....
A camera should be kept in a pouch, not a pocket. That's basic photography lesson one.
I love the GM1, sold mine a long time ago but still use my gx850 all the time
I love the GX850! I have three of them

@@MarkusPix oh wow that’s awesome! I have wanted to add both a gm1 and a gm5 to my collection but unfortunately with 6 kids and a wife to provide for and 4 companies I’ve spent my life building I’ve been hit so badly by this pandemic (and the government) that I’ve had to sell off most of my collection...but the gx850 is one camera I will NEVER get rid of. Though I sold off all of my MFT lenses lol...oh well. I can buy more gear someday, but my family will always come first!! If you watch any of my videos you’ll see some filmed on nearly every camera out there, but I filmed this music video for my sons original song Virus with nothing more than a G7, and cheap Kamlan manual lens...

Love your channel btw, thanks Markus!!

It’s inspiring how good you can make these tiny little cameras look!! Thanks for another great video.
I just got the original Blackmagic Pocket. It's micro 4/3 1080p and I use my Panasonic lens with it. Got a great deal on it.
I hope Cara does the drawing for the camera. It makes me laugh watching her get so excited drawing the names! Good luck to everyone that enters!
Thanks again Markus, I bought the Panasonic GX850 MFT camera as a travel camera to take to Scotland but then bought the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mkiii MFT and it is amazing.
I have to say, Markus's philosophy is really spot-on. I haven't even realized I've been following it implicitly until now ;)
It is so cool to see a pro talk sense and not size and money. Great video.
Wow.. finally a camera tech reviewer that actually lights a video like they know how to.... light a video. LOL
Thanks Marlene we think alike 💓
THIS...is the kind of TH-cam video series that makes me watch the whole shows I select on this channel. He tells it as being a person who lives life and supports his real interest in a hobby-career with a unique flair in his own way.
"Good show!" as the British would say. "Jolly good show!"
After watching this video I've bought used gm1 for $160. I'm super happy with it! I would have never consider buying 8 year old without your input ;)! Thanks!
Great to hear!
Love how Markus is enthusiastic about what he's enthusiastic about: Small cameras, Cara. :-)
Yep, that pretty much sums it up!
I was watching on phone and realised it was sharp even at TH-cam's default 480p. Then I switched to 1080p and whoa, the details and focus are great. 👍
Love my C100 Mark II .....everyone says why don't I get a new camera....because it gets the job done.....thumbs up Markus
I found my camera, finally. I will get GM5
I went from:
Sony a7c
Fujifilm X-s10
X 100V
X pro 3
Nikon Z7 2
Thanks Marcus 😊 🙏
Dear God, I’m on step 3!!
A great camera!
Now that's small. Shooting in 4K requires massive storage and when you are a travel vlogger it's just not practical
Wait until 8K becomes the norm (4x the pixels of 4k)!
@@FromtheeyesofShaun thanks
Probably the only thing more enjoyable than watching that video is using my own Lumix GM1!
Got to love your passion and honesty!
I can tell you why Marcus is an amazing person and why his life is exactly what he wants you can see it the one word that comes to mind is "Passion". I This is what makes great leaders and great people that can reform, Rebuild and change Perspectives in life. Marks is all about the love thank you for your amazing presence.
Can you do a video on how you process audio? FX, software, settings and such?
I still love my Sony nex 5n 😆
im using a sony a5100 for taking pics and could not be more happy... Last time i purchased a cam was those kodaks you had to crank before taking a pic lol..
have two of them and really like them as B and C-cam. the 1080p looks good with great lenses as you said.
only problem I ever encountered was an overheating issue while using wifi-preview in high temps.
if you want to improve the grip get one plastic from sony for their small cameras. can't remember which model but fits perfectly to the GM1 and is a nice add-on to improve ergonomics of this mini camera.
film markus with toaster and im still like "🥰"
Man ..... thanks so much for this video.
One day ill get one like at or the samsung once I get out of this slump till then galaxy s10 it is lol love your videos keep up the awesome content 🤙🤙
Thank you for making a simple video showing us how to create great work without having to spend a fortune. I love the simplicity you create and the advice you give. Love all your videos!

Markus, have you had an opportunity to use a Nikon 1j5? Would love to hear your input on it. It’s my favorite little pocket camera.
The 1j5 has a small 1" sensor vs the much bigger M43 sensor in the GM1 fpr blurrier backgrounds but I love anything small, they're all fun toys
I love my GM1. It goes everywhere that I do and it is by far the most enjoyable camera to use that I have ever taken photos with. Thanks Markus for your enthusiastic videos and vast knowledge of photography.
Couldn't agree more!
Marcus, when i need to remind myself what it's all about i watch this video of you talking about the point of living. I feel like you are speaking from inside my own mind and heart. Thank you for the spiritual and emotional and creative jolt.
That's for sure the best quality 1080p video I have seen lately! Good find Markus!
I bought a parallax viewfinder for mine and i use it for street photography. Excellent camera.
Ran across your videos searching for a Tracking Camera solution for church. Glad I found your site. I use to do video production professionally also and you have re-inspired my enthusiasm to get back on the proverbial horse. Thank you!!
You are amazing. I am considered a Sensei/Master of Aiki/Aikido. I am also a Ph.D. in History... still I always learn a lot of things by watching your videos. Thank you my dear friend. I hope you the best in life.
-Bill
Gm1 was discontinued long ago. I still have mine. One of my favorite cameras
At 14:04 I was sold. The detail on the hairs on your finger!
I just absolutely love listening about how passionate you are for the cameras you like. It’s so fun seeing the eyes light up
Can we take a second to appreciate the shirt Markus is wearing? That thing is awesome. Oh and I totally agree with this philosophy. I grab videos with whatever I have on me at the time. Little pocket camera is next up on my list of things to buy!
My shirt thanks you
Makes total sense.
It's like camping.
Some people enjoy camping with an RV filled with all their fancy gear, while others enjoy the challenge of going into the woods with nothing but a pocket knife and small backpack of simple supplies.
I totally agree on your approach using the least favourable camera to match the super camera results. I love such challenges
