Jon, thanks for showing how to do the stripes! I watched a man do a 3 color weave once. After seeing the work that went into that, I decided I'd never try it. You did an amazing job and made it look easy! Thanks again. God bless
Jon, Thanks so much for everything you provide for us garage geeks. You have been a wealth of information and motivation for me and my daughter while working on her 68'. Please keep up the great work!!!!!
Great job masking and results,,I actually put 15 inch rally wheels on the back of my 68 bird,,14 front,,cool thing is i painted them copper,,and gloss black the five spokes. No beauty rings, but a crome knock off in the center,,looked amazing
Thanks for another AWESOME video John!! Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to go into all the details of the masking process. LOOKS PHENOMENAL!!! Very much appreciated and inspiring!! THANKS AGAIN JOHN!!!
incredibly well explained, especially as you were working at the same time - you lift the confidence of us all who are elbow deep into a restoration - thanks Jon - excellent video as usual !
Great tutorial on painting stripes Jon. This is not something I have ever done, but after watching your video, I think I would be a lot less apprehensive if I attempted to do it solo. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. Learning by doing is fine on most of the restoration activity, but when it comes to painting, as you know, getting it done right the first time is the best time saver you can find.
restoring a vehicle is NOT cheap!!!, unless you are wealthy, buy, or making a purchase at auction saves you much, and not all the headaches, BUT it is cool to see individuals as such restoring them in his garage, fantastic workmanship and end product!
Can it be done for less for sure but something has to be sacrificed to do so, that is why doing it yourself you have total control on how things get done or maybe not done. To make everything like New or better not always necessary. If you do wow the results speak for themselves
Great job on the stripes I believe it cannot come out no better than that do you really are a professional now buddy....... and if anybody is lucky enough that they will get their car built by you $90,000 is nothing a professional restoration shop will charge over $100,000 and still at the end you don't have a great looking car like the ones you build and I mean every word that I am saying keep up the great work my friend
Thanks buddy, I do like to think what I have built isn’t to the best of my abilities, seems every car I do it gets better and quicker. Almost wish I started doing this sooner
Thanks for continuing to make these videos. I've learned a lot. I'm working on my 68 Firebird and this channel has helped with a couple of things (from end assembly) .
Thanks! I get lucky sometimes, what’s the deal with your TH-cam name kingdomhearts? Is that a video game reference? One of my favorite game series if so.
Damn Good Job! There are very few Birds (if any) that I have seen done to the level you do them. Including my car, which is done very well! The only Trans Am Convertible Tribute I have seen for sale that may, or may not, have been done to your level. Was at a recent Barret/Jackson that sold for $136,400 in Scottsdale 2024, Lot #975.1 I would like to know if (besides winning First Place) the Great Pumpkin project has had a professional appraisal. When I viewed the car, it truly presented better than factory new. Trying to help promote your channel. Alot you do can be applied to other projects. I did stripes once with regular tape, Not Gooder!
Thanks bud, the pumpkin hasn’t been appraised yet. I am curious what they would come up with. The mockingbird I feel would do well at an auction if he ever decided to sell it. I am fairly confident he will keep it till the day he checks out.
Another big lesson I learned with Metallic’s, shoot it all at the same time because the metallic will settle differently at different temperatures, I did a green car and put the skirts on (painted off the car at a different time) and the color didn’t match at all, fortunately it had body length chrome trim so I only had to shoot the lower part of the quarter with the skirt installed. Lessons learned.
Exactly right! Metallic color can be affected by temperature, air pressure, distance from the panel, angle of the panel and humidity. This is why to me it’s vital to paint it assembled and all at the same time to ensure the best color match as possible
I know what you mean, this is actually only the second car I have ever painted stripes on. It adds a level of difficulty to get it right for sure. Between me and you if I never paint stripes again I would be just fine. I have a feeling this won’t be the last one.
Excellent work, Jon. With your talent for teaching, I think your efforts would be better spent over seeing a restoration business (of your own), instead of doing all the work yourself. You just have to find a staff with a passion for Birds and hold them to your standards.
Hi Jon, I need to paint stripes on my 1971 Camaro and this video was perfect. I thought putting tape on the basecoat would be an issue with lifting or leaving a residue from the tape adhesive. It's probably best not to leave the tape on for any length of time and get on with doing the stripes in one day. I'm sure I missed it but when you started and the hood was on the saw horses you mentioned you sanded the hood with 600 grit. What did you sand on the hood? Was the hood in white primer or white sealer? Thanks!
I feel the base coat is forgiving once it’s dried about an hour I have even lightly sanded blemishes at that point but I strongly feel quality tape is the biggest reason for success when painting stripes, this is one time I will tell you to spend the extra for good stuff. The hood was all body worked and I burned thru to bare metal in a few areas and it was going to be sometime before I painted the hood so I painted it with a coat of white epoxy to seal it up. That was my base for sanding it with 600 then the rest was is what you saw.
The is a Hugger Orange 1970 Z/28 on Ebay right now for $82,500 and the stripes are the worst I have ever seen. They are off by several inches. It's laughable.
That would drive my nuts, it’s kinda like some of the real 1969 trans am convertibles are painted the wrong white and blue. The information wasn’t there supposedly back then. Maybe they have been fixed now but if not I would be on the struggle bus for sure
Jon, thanks for showing how to do the stripes! I watched a man do a 3 color weave once. After seeing the work that went into that, I decided I'd never try it. You did an amazing job and made it look easy! Thanks again. God bless
No doubt the stripes add a level of difficulty, totally possible to get it done but planning and forward thinking is a must.
Jon, Thanks so much for everything you provide for us garage geeks. You have been a wealth of information and motivation for me and my daughter while working on her 68'. Please keep up the great work!!!!!
Great to hear! I had my daughter out in the garage helping me with alignment of sheetmetal.
This channel provides a treasure trove of information.
Thank you for documenting your work.
That is music to my ears. Wanting to share as much as possible!

THANKS AGAIN JOHN!!!
Glad it was helpful! I am so very happy this part is done stripes do add a level of difficulty for sure.
super clean job Jon. You are so right about that 3M tape......super clean lines. Thanks for sharing.
That tape is almost magical.
incredibly well explained, especially as you were working at the same time - you lift the confidence of us all who are elbow deep into a restoration - thanks Jon - excellent video as usual !
I appreciate that! Wanted to show real time to prove it was done as shown and remove any doubts it is possible
You’re a wealth of information Jon !!
Thank you for sharing !!!
Glad to help!
Those stripes turned out amazing. It’s crazy how good you can paint a car in your garage. Very impressive.👍
I get lucky a little I suppose but it only proves the proper prep and good materials it is possible.

Indeed not having to respray is a bonus plus a huge money saver.
Great work, Jon! The bird has turned out beautifully!
I am very happy with the results and getting closer to the finish line as well

Thanks for sharing, looking to paint stripes on my mustang. Thanks for showing me how it's done.
Cool. You can add stripes to older paint just the same but you will need to scuff and clean the surface
Thanks for continuing to make these videos. I've learned a lot. I'm working on my 68 Firebird and this channel has helped with a couple of things (from end assembly) .
Right on!
Painting stripes is easy - said no one 😂 but you made each of the steps seem like it’s not impossible to do 🎉😮❤
Thanks so much 😊
These videos are great! The paint looks incredible and those stripes look awesome!
They are! Super clean lines and worth the money for the good tape.
Looks great! Those lines are perfect!
I am very happy with the results.
Thanks!
Oh wow. Much appreciated!!
Looking great
Thanks!
Amazing work, my friend

Excellent!
Many thanks!
Very nice!!!
Thanks
Awesome stuff mate well done
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks amazing!
Heck yeah. I love it.
Looks great. I don’t think I have the patience to do strips. Haha.
I barely do myself, LOL. That was why I didn’t record painting the main body because of the stress of painting the stripes.
Looks great 💪😎
Thanks 👍
John you do excellent work my friend!! Keep up the fantastic work sir!!👍🏽
Thank you kindly
Great job! All this from a regular guy. Amazing.
Thanks and in a small work space as well.
Beautiful job as always!!
You make it look so easy!!
😎👍🏻💪🏻🇺🇸
Thanks! I get lucky sometimes, what’s the deal with your TH-cam name kingdomhearts? Is that a video game reference? One of my favorite game series if so.
Great work as always! Looks nothing short of amazing! I hope you reach your goal someday of making it full time! You deserve it!
I hope so too! The trick will be keeping it fun and not turn into work.

@@VinylVillageGarage We will pass ours on to our son! ❤ Hope to see you at Next T/A Nats! Hopefully with Vintage air installed!
Great job ....really enjoying the project build... always looking forward to seeing more content and thanks for the tips....🔧🔧👍
More to come! Now it’s down to all the little things, convertible top, interior, trim and so on
Looking gooder Jon! What’s up with red snorkel bird ? Another project? Have a great weekend everyone.
Looking gooder indeed, hopefully I will get time this week to put the hood on the car and that will be a nice payoff.

Yeah that takes practice and patience, I would end up having it look like a map of Texas 😂

My white camaro wishes it was still a firebird
Oh man, Having a bit of an identity crisis? good news it could always be changed back 😎
Yeah you need a soft tape.
Yup

Anytime, glad to help.
Nothing worse than stripes that are wrong. You see it on the Z-28s all the time. Stripes tell the tail.
