Great Job and info! At 58yrs old, I can do it by myself, but dont risk it! I adjusted new Peterbilt hoods at the factory. Very similar process! Awesome to see Great Pumpkin in your driveway with the 1ST PLACE Trophy!!!! Never a Doubt!
Glad to see not only person beia one man show. Not sure if this will help when doing hood by yourself. I have found putting something between window cowling area that is roughly the same size as gap when hood is installed, and then using a adjustable paint handle long and putting it into hood latch hole down to radiator support. You can literally pivot hood on hinges down to cowling spacer support(blanket folde up or foam etc..) support put prop stick(adjustable long paint handle) in front and hood will stay in pace as you move around to bolt down. Kinda wordy hope makes sense. On adjusting back of hood front bolt and lifting up makes back of hood go down, then sdjust back bolt for overall height. Awesome job brother! Enjoy your channel!
Mine too! I figured add a little suspense would instigate some comments. I have installed several hoods this way by myself without fail. I know I am rolling the dice doing it this way.
My "Old Guy" method to remove and install my 68 FB hood included a Rachet strap to a bike hook in the garage ceiling to the hood latch opening to take the weight and act as a 3rd and much stronger hand. Words don't do justice to how this helped.
In the future I would do on this like I did on the gate opener motor. Get 2 extra screws and cut the head off of them and uise as pins to align and set on.
You've got balls ! Lol , doing the hood by yourself after all that work, but then those aftermarket hoods are light compared to a real T/A hood. Have done both and an original hood weight a whole lot more, enough so that would never do it without help.
On the hood alignment, my 69 still has the original rubber spacers for the head light surrounds. There is a notch built into those rubbers for the hood that would have them forward of the ends of the fenders by about an 1/8th of an inch or so. Whether or not the factory actually set the hoods up that way, I wouldn't know, but based on those rubber surrounds, it seems likely.
@@VinylVillageGarage Really hard to say. The notch is cut in at an angle similar to the sides of the hood. It honestly might just be personal preference at this point. Like you, I've always put the hood even with the fenders. I've currently got my hood off and the engine out for rebuild. When I reinstall it, maybe I'll try it forward and see how it looks.
I guess I'll get a break on this one. I'm going to paint mine Fathom Blue Metallic, so I'll be painting with the hood on the car. Not sure I want to try what you did. Great work and info as always.
@@VinylVillageGarage Before I purchased this bolt kit, I had a bunch of mis-matched stuff everywhere, including the hood. I had a couple pretty long bolts in there, without issue.
I know one man operation...lol, another trick old pillows work well, but what I’ve done is tie a rope to the rafters and tie it to the center of the hood to support it. At 66 I can’t toss it on like I use to when I was young like you.
Man the hinges on my car kicked my butt. Even bought a different brand and they weren’t any better. Lube definitely helped and finally got them dialed in but it wasn’t fun at all.
Where the hell was this guy back in 80s when I was working on my buddies early bird. Could not for the life of me get that hood to line up right. He didn't care, but bothered the shit out of me...
Another great video brother. I’ve used white lithium grease in an aerosol can to lube the top frame on my ‘67. What did you use to lube the hood hinges? Car is looking fantastic!
I used PB blaster brand penetrant oil, it’s what had at hand, white lithium is a good choice especially for convertible top frame. It stays where you put it better than oil.
Ok. I got a question for anyone who has experience. I have. 69. Firebird conv. Project car with my. Son and daughter. They found. A fiber glass. Trans am hood the both like. It over. 400 style. Hood. I want. I got over ruled. Thoughts. On glass hood on a daily driver. Using regular hood latch assembly. Don’t want to use. Hood pins
Anyone else hold their breath while watching this? Great job Jonathan!
I was just coming here to say the same thing
lol. I held my breath too!
That hood looks gorgeous. That bird is coming together nicely.
I could not be happier with it.

I was so very happy to see the
Pumpkin get first place. Not bad for a guy working in a garage at home.
Jon, I admire your patience in adjusting the hood on the Mocking bird. I know you did a ton of adjusting off camera, but your results look great!
Yeah the passenger side i must have tried 15 different adjustments till I liked it. Worth the effort in the end
Great job , glad to see I,m not the only one flying solo 🙂
Making it happen and don’t always have time to wait for help.
I'm still amazed at what you can do in your garage.
It only helps prove it can be done.
No way my little arms and 5'9" self would try that by myself. Amazing Job!
I have done quite a few this way, eventually I will have to figure out a different way or find help.
Attention to detail. 5 Stars! Those stripes are beautiful.
This car is starting to look like it’s drawing finally
Looking much gooder Jon. Those hoods are heavy and hard to handle. Well done my friend.
Yes they are, it’s a good work out and makes me feel young still. 😎
Looking good John, stripes look awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing it complete.
You and me both! Did some buffing yesterday and it’s looking great.

Thanks for the info especially the hood adjustment part.
Beautiful car
We agree!
The more I watch the more I am amazed.
It’s fun to me playing cars.
The hinges on my 1970 GTO need to be adjusted and, after watching this video, I at least have an idea of how to do that. Thank you for this video!!!
You're welcome! Those gto hinges work the same way.
Hood is dialed in. Nice. I have to admit, installing it had me holding my breath. Great video.
Mine too! I figured add a little suspense would instigate some comments. I have installed several hoods this way by myself without fail. I know I am rolling the dice doing it this way.
All I can say is your a high roller man, 😖
nice synopsys on hood alignment. thanks Jon.
I like it when thr hood shuts nice and even. So many cars where the corner is popped up.
Somebody send him some fender protectors.... I'm dying here 😯
I figured a little drama would stir up conversation and comments 😁
Even though I don't own a Firebird I still enjoy watching your videos
Right on! Thanks for watching.
Great job😊
Thank you! 😊

That works!
Looking good!!
Thank you very much. Working on the cutting and buffing now, getting closer to the end

Factory hoods are heavier for sure.
Excellent work John!! You always do nice work!!👍🏽
Thanks! Feeling good about this car. Moving right along

I have been told the same
But also told it’s notched for the hood to clear during opening and shutting so 🤷♂️

The paint run in the back, hope it is in the clear coat!
Yup just the clear. It wast these till after the last pass of clear.

Great plan Metallic colors be painted with car assembled for the best color match and keeping it looking the same.
The AMK Products bolts spec'd for the hood are not pointed, so you're correct about that.
I personally haven’t poked a bolt thru a hood and damaged the outer skin but I have seen it and learned that lesson at someone else’s expense.

awesome videos keep up the good work !
Thanks, will do!
Very informative! As usual! Thanks for sharing your hard earned knowledge with us!
My pleasure!
Thanks for the hood installation tips..enjoyed it... good content and thanks...🔧🔧👍

Hey that works too I am sure in a few more years I will doing similar things 😎
Outstanding as always.
Thanks again!
Great job as always!!
Thanks!
Great work as always! It’s good to see that even the master struggles sometimes! 😅
So true! Just keeping it real.
Man the hinges on my car kicked my butt. Even bought a different brand and they weren’t any better. Lube definitely helped and finally got them dialed in but it wasn’t fun at all.
Hinges for me never seem the same for adjustment, I typically just keep messing with it till I get it right
Yup, there was a moment or two in this video where I closed my eyes…. Some “ pucker factor” involved
lol. Well I figured a little suspense would keep you on the edge of your seat a bit.
Where the hell was this guy back in 80s when I was working on my buddies early bird. Could not for the life of me get that hood to line up right. He didn't care, but bothered the shit out of me...

Took me a minute to understand why the paint on the fenders were dull! Lol
lol. Yeah I was staring to wet sand the car for buffing. Worked on that yesterday for about 4 hours almost ready to start buffing now.
💪😎
Thank you
Just curious boss, any dingers or scratches on the hood? Great work
Nope made it thru unscathed, having help with this part is definitely more ideal
I have more in common with you. I have to work alone and have had all my life except for a girlfriend or wife and that is not too often.
Can’t always wait for help so just gotta figure a way to get it done
Did you lube the hinges while the car was in the paint booth?
Hinges got oiled outside
Please come do my hood. I have it in every possible combo 20 times and it just doesn't sit right.
In some cases the hood hinge to fender holes need elongated to get it dialed in.
@@VinylVillageGarage Yeah I have heard that before. Would that be elongated up or elongated down on the hinges?

Will need much lighter springs or no springs on the hinges. And most if not all fiberglass hoods don’t have hood latch provisions.
@ thanks. You’re a wealth of knowledge and experience is. Great. Keep going you’re a good man.
@@jimmiller6030 happy to help. At one time you could also get the fiberglass trans am style hood with the ram air tubes already installed too.
Great job!
Thanks!
