OMG, Luke! Having been stationed overseas for 16 of my 23 years in the Air Force, I could write a book about the places, people , customs, traditions and the languages. I picked up enough to shop and converse un poquito in six languages. Learning from the people and wonderful friends was the most rewarding experience of traveling around the world. One of the most beautiful places in the world is Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland...well, Switzerland is incredibly gorgeous and an outdoorsman's paradise! The ALPS are truly magnificent and one activity I will always remember is the tram ride from Tasch up to Zermatt. Then to sit at the base of the Matterhorn drinking hot chocolate and eating a delicious scone was so relaxing and the proverbial icing on the cake. That picture is still in my mind. One thing is true about traveling overseas is that you're first considered the "ugly American" however if you learn to speak even just a few words of their language, you demonstrate respect for their customs and traditions they will open up to you. I've been in shops where I was spoken to in a curt manner but as I began to speak their language, struggling oftentimes with words, their ability to speak perfect English comes out. Rudeness begets rudeness. You and Susan want to fall in love again...Paris is magical (ignore the panhandlers!). Eat dinner at the top of the Eiffel Tower at night and the glorious panoramic view of lights is magnificent! The Normandy coastline is incredible to visit however it is sad to see so many of our fallen soldiers after D-Day. The coast line is gorgeous beyond words though. The tram ride up Lycabettus Hill in Athens, Greece is phenomenal as well and dinner/dancing...incredible. Take a day cruise around the Aegean Sea island hopping including the beautiful island of Santorini. If you're into magnificent gardens, especially tulips, go to Keukenhof in the Netherlands; and if you're with Susan in Amsterdam, stay away from the Red District :) Eat dinner on a canal dinner boat. I don't know if you're planning on going to Australia or Fiji but there are memories to be had there as well. Snorkeling or diving the Great Barrier Reef is unbelievable. Anyway, when I find out in a video where you are going and I have been there I will send you an email to give you some insight or travel hints.
A terrific illustration of just how great truck camping is...all the convenience you can bring to make life a pleasure during a rainy camp. Thanks for the tent test and the hard work of the video. I wish you and your sweetie great adventures this year. There are wonderful spots to go in this great USA. I’ve literally driven from the Southern border of Texas all the way to explore much of Alaska, during the winter. I’ve driven from the coast of California to the coast of North Carolina, from Bangor, Maine to Key West, Florida. You are in for a treat. I’ve lived for years in Germany, awhile in the Middle East, Southern Africa, Korea and Hawaii. I was raised in the Appalachian mountains of East Tennessee. There is beauty, home, refuge there. Those hills wrap their arms around me and welcome me, protect me, feed me and mine. I know where home is. In a couple of years I will return forever. Texas
Thanks for being one of the few channels that consistently experiment with inexpensive equipment so I don't have to use the cheap ones that dont work:)
Lmao. I wonder if he'll take the video down to safegaurd Mike...errrr... I mean Todd from prison hookers! Everyone knows you never leave your wallet with a prostitute! He's lucky her still had his car.
Six years in the Navy I have seen a fare amount of the world. By far my favorite place in the world is Terceira Island, Azores Portugal. The country side is beautiful but the reason I love it so is the people. They make visitors feel welcome and at home as if you are family. This place should be on your list to visit, please do your research as I know you will. Then consider it for someplace to stop and try out, you will not be disappointed.
That tent should fold up and fit perfectly in the trash can. I do like the lantern simply because it won't topple over. Keep up the great reviews. As for travels l would like to see camping in New Zealand.
I learned my lesson about this many years ago with my first purchase of a tent. IT was supposed to be water proof and I am so glad that I set it up in my yard and tested it with my garden hose. Darn thing leaked everywhere. Bought a couple spray cans of water repellent spray and wa-la! Water tight all over it. Spent the next few seasons happily sleeping in it without one leak the ten years I kept it. A little fire accident destroyed it in a house fire. I now always test my tents well before I take them out into the wild. I also keep a can of waterproofing handy when headed out. Thanks for your video. Great one as always. ALWAYS BE PREPARED!!!!!
This tent reminded me so much of the first tent I ever owned - back in 1974. Despite the reviews, I went ahead and purchased the updated version. I really wanted to like this tent. I seam-sealed the tent carefully, paying attention to the most vulnerable areas. I also gave the tent a coat of water repellent. I’ve used it 3 times this summer, 2 with a decent amount of Wisconsin rain. So far, the tent has held up well. I’m sure I’ll upgrade somewhere down the line, but it getd me out there.
It’s disappointing that the tent leaked. It’ll be interesting to see what the company says/does about it. I really like the other products you’re testing, especially the stove.
New Mexico, USA Jemez springs, Gillman tunnels. Camping, hiking, biking, fishing! Lots of places to go! Beautiful! Oh those are free areas to camp! My favorite!!!
I learned my lesson on cheap tents on EBay in 2004. Then I got into what makes a tent waterproof and materials used in better tents and now I can look even before eating if it’s gonna keep me dry or not. The tent I bought after that experience was an MSR fury and still have it today and has been used hundreds of times in some of the worst weather and yet never once got wet in it. Bomber tent that personally has withstood 70 mph winds on Mt Hood, south sister, and brokentop. As well as Alaska where I live now in winter and summer.
Hey Luke, awesome vid as usual!!! Thanks for the testing the tent and the campout!!! Garlic helps lower cholesterol, just a little health info!!! Strength and Honor my friend!!!
I thought you were drinking stove fuel for a split second when you opened the red water bottle. I’ve been traveling over the last few years and would strongly recommend the following countries in no particular order (Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, Nicaragua). Love the videos as always.
My son loves garlic . He eats them raw. I like garlic but not by itself. I like them in salads, meats , stews and etc. Just finished watching one of your videos. I can watch your videos all night. Stay safe.
Rain held out to let you get a good night's rest in, then hits next day so you can still review how waterproof it is(n't)... I'd call that a successful trip! Thanks for bringing us along!
You are one of VERY few people I watch. Definitely my favorite outdoor videos. I'm excited to see where you travel! Also, I have a friend of mine who found out the very hard way that his trekker was also NOT waterproof. Woke up in a pool during our week trip in the Adirondacks.
I guess the next video will be: The testing of how well The River Country Trekker 2.2 Tent will hold up against your 12 gauge double O buck shot loads, in memory of the Amazon Backpack!!! Keep doing what you do so well my friend!
There are so many great places to see right here at home, and I've been all over the world. The SW is great in early, mid Spring. The NW shines in June and July. Fly fishing the Madison in Montana, then into Yellowstone. How about the North country? BC, Yukon, and beyond, a great summer adventure. Wherever you go...there are lots of great people, wildlife, small towns, isolated camping and hiking spots....do it while you can brother, life is uncertain. Make memories with your wife. Semper Fi.
Thanks for the review. Probably saved some folks from wet, miserable nights... You and Susie should consider coming the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, on the Cumberland Plateau in the states of Tennessee and Kentucky. 125,000 acres of one of the most pristine river watersheds in the Eastern U.S. Exceptionally diverse landscape, popular whitewater river, hundreds of miles of hiking and horse trail and many mountain bike trails rated as "epic". Very few hikers in the backcountry and you can camp anywhere you find a campsite. The 55 mile John Muir Trail has everything from stunning river views from the rim of the gorge to rock shelters, formations and mountain streams. Many awesome day hikes too.
I usually use a "budget" tent. Back when I was a scout I used a northwest territory pup tent that was just about the best thing ever! I used it for about 10 years before it wore out. I could set it up blindfolded in less than five minutes; I mean that literally as that was a challenge in the Klondike Derby at camp Chickahominy. Now I have a tent from Target, a two person from their embark series, I have used it for several years. It is a great tent for $30. Though with it being bright red it is not for the stealth camper. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a budget friendly tent that isn't too heavy, 5-6 pound range if I recall correctly.
Hello Luke, thank you for the tagalong. This was a fun outing. You're quite the Renaissance man in the outdoors. I appreciate your no nonsense honest gear reviews. All the best of good things to you and Susan. If you're headed out west this year, you might consider the John Muir Trail in California or a trek in Desolation Valley west of Lake Tahoe. 🤗
I bought this same tent, ive been out in 2 camp over,1dry.1 in pouring rain, didn’t leak, but I sealed most of the seams from the inside, but your right they should stand by their claims..shouldn’t have to add additional waterproofing👍
My three picks for best outdoor experiences. #1 Isle Royale. Must see! Only northern rainforest. The shoreline has the craziest rocks. #2 MN Northshore. Beautiful, with outstanding hiking & views like waterfalls, Lake Superior. #3 MN boundary waters. Get lost hiking or canoeing.
I have been looking at buying a lantern like those, can’t wait for the review. Cheap budget tent review (hyke and byke). Hocking Hills Ohio is a nice place to camp and hike. Caves and waterfalls.
Luke, for places you need to go this year, here are some amazing places I've been. Buffalo National River Park in North Arkansas (amazing place to go canoeing) The Black Hills South Dakota (from there you can see my favorite park ever Badlands National Park , Mt Rushmore, and shoot over to WY for Devil's Tower) Anywhere in Montana, but Glacier National Park is a must see Moab, Utah. You can see Arches and the Canyonlands, plus the town itself is pretty awesome. A great alternative is St George, UT near Zion and Bryce Canyon. You will thank me if you add any of these to your trips this year.
Hi Luke, another brilliant and honest review, I would love to show you the walking trails here in Scotland, we have some of the most amazing and beautiful wilderness areas in the world.
Man I've been eyeballing that tent for a while and lightly following the design updates to it. Its such a shame I also had really high hopes for this tent, oh well I guess just add that to the list of things that sound too good to be true because they simply just are. As always a thanks to Luke for finding these things out so we don't have to.
I have the same problem with the length of the Snugpak Poncho and Liner, they are just too long unless you're closer to 6'. I'm 5'7" and they just barely don't touch the ground when I'm standing up straight. If I need of over even slightly to do any type of chores around camp they are in the mud. Another issue I had was they are cut huge, the arms of the poncho liner are a bunched up mess. I've had them for 5 years now and the poncho hasn't leaked once though . The front neck zip gets caught sometimes like your OneTigris , but other than that they are built surprisingly well. I almost picked this the up but went with the OneTigris Backwoods Bungalow instead. Great vid brother!
The Bibbulmun Track is one of the world's great long distance walk trails, stretching1000km from Kalamunda in the Perth Hills, to Albany on the south coast, winding through the heart of the scenic South West of Western Australia.
The Mason Dixon Trail here in Northeastern Maryland is beautiful in the spring. You'll go through miles and miles of blooming rhododendron and mountain laurel as you hike next to the Susquehanna river then into Elk Neck State Forrest. You should definitely check it out when your traveling.
Crillebøj Yeah, I’d love that. Maybe even a couple different ones.....One for winter (with a winter pack) & one for spring/summer/fall with a different, smaller pack & loadout?
I think you are right! Interesting Fact : There are sites which analyze Amazon reviews to see whether they are real or not and the River Country Trekker 2.2 tent was rated an F for the reviews being HIGHLY DECEPTIVE! This I believe. - Luke
Sad that the tent didn't make it, but now there are thousands of us who aren't going to get ripped off buying it: BIG thanks4that. The Rockies are great in Spring to mid summer, late summer you may see snow up high. You gotta see Lake Tahoe, even if just a day road trip. Not a "real hike" but it's beautiful beyond comprehension. Growing fonder of the cassette stove every time I see it. Moose was tough and loyal, but milspec vehicles don't need to exceed convoy speed so many don't. S+H!
Thank you for another great video. I love following along on your adventures. I really enjoyed the way you have incorporated new prostitute stories in your videos. Keep up the great work.
If you and Susan have never done it I highly recommend hiking to the top of McAfee Knob in Roanoke VA. It's a hard hike but we'll worth it. On the other side of the knob is a shelter with a good water source and the views from the knob are breathtaking.
Love your program. You are very entertaining and informative. I learn things with every program. One trip you should do is the western leg of the North Pacific Trail in Washington. Specifically the Pacific Ocean leg. Beautiful!
I've been enjoying my Mier 2 trekking pole tent. I picked it up for $110.00 it has held up well in different weather over the last 6 months. It is basically a clone of the Zpacks Duplex. Great trip out as always. I like the idea behind the Suto products.
For traveling recommendations, I recommend the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico. It is beautiful and remote without very many people. I was actually in the Gila during a huge thunderstorm with the original River Country tent and got completely drenched when the tent failed miserably. At least it was during the summer.
Thanks Luke for this one. My recommendation for you would be the Finnish Lapland area. There are many interesting spots, like the Kevo Canyon, Lemmenjoki valley and the mountain Halti area. Welcome!
Great video, Luke! The prostitute analogy was hilarious! Dude, I served 23 years in the military and 16 of them overseas. I could tell some wild stories about prostitutes in Turkey alone or Amsterdam's red light district. I am excited for you and Susan to travel this year. We will look forward to your adventures. As far as personal experiences and favorites, man, where to begin. There are so many places to explore and even the deserts of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado are fascinating. I loved the coastlines of Northern California and Oregon. Being an avid fisherman it was paradise for me. If you and Susan ski, Colorado offers some of the world's best; I loved Arizona's Snow Bowl and Sun Rise on the Indian reservation. Let us know where you plan to travel and there are thousands of us who can offer suggestions. I plan to do some motorcycle camping later this year and want to relive some of my youth.
Should try and make your way down to NZ, Whanganui Journey, Stuart Island and Abel Tasman Coast Track are only some of the tracks we offer. Also think you might enjoy the scenery we have to offer haha
Luke, Great video as always. A lot of good information. The Knife and cutting board look great for Car Camping. The Soto Stove and Lantern intrigue me. I might have to buy them to play with them. (The stove won't replace mine but it does look nice.) The Tent, well it truly looks like junk, I wouldn't buy it. (This is coming from the guy who will buy waterproof gear and hit it 3 times with a Water Repellent before I even try it out.) The Poncho, well I have given up on them ever since you did the review of the Swiss Rain Cape. I picked up one each for my Wife and myself and we love the damned things. They look funny but they are great for Florida.
Vancouver island (BC) is rife with trails and camping spots! The wild side trail on Flores island is an 11km hike each way, it is BEAUTIFUL! And you should swing by Tofino for some vacation time, surfing, hiking and eating!
I have that tent. I seam-sealed EVERY seam, as the manufacturer recommended. I then applied water repellent spray. I used it 4 times this season, 2 with rain. Not a problem. I now have a $250 upgrade budget, but I’ve yet to find a 2 man backpacking tent that’s lighter and more trustworthy.
Great review!! I am a hammock camper and would like to see some reviews of hammocks. Have fun traveling this year and I would suggest Australia or New Zealand for our of country trips.
Recommendations: USA - Oregon: on the coast, basically anywhere, many of the national forests, I could go on (will be more specific if you want) Northern California: Trinity Alps, Siskiyou Wilderness Outside of the US - Colombia: Medellin, Bogotá since I'm assuming you don't have a ton of Spanish under your belt, I could be wrong, and if at all possible the coffee region (Quindío). Gorgeous places around there. Like...just go for that region. Argentina (super far away but whatever): Buenos Aires, Patagonia, Iguazú, Jujuy Uruguay: Montevideo
20:13 you said “Mike” thought it was Todd....
Haha I sure did, I couldn't remember which fake name that I used; Mikes works.
When editing I cut out a Terry and even a Kevin. haha

nice catch :D I managed to miss it....
I noticed that too

Yeah, I never use a red water bottle. Ewwww
Love the overnighters!! Love the military surplus, especially the older gear. I would love to see more of the "Loan wolf Mt" wood shed overnighters.
You should totaly Come to Finland! Great forests and scenery. Also Savotta and varusteleka, which I know you like.
A fun adventure Luke. You have fun ESPECIALLY when it rains. That’s awesome.
Would be great to meet up in the Nordics! Lapland is beautiful also during summer.
I like your use of another ridge line to create a tie off point. Great idea for expanding the types of sites your tarps can be placed.

Hafod Dywyll, Wales. Cader Idris is a nice peak to hike from there aswell.
Come to southern Illinois. Camping in pine hills area. Great overlooks of Mississippi River Bottoms. Primitive camping.

Dear Luke, I highly depend on your views on the stuff you review before think of buying the product. Dennis
Great video Luke. The table shots were great!
The Mason Dixon Trail here in Northeastern Maryland is beautiful in the spring. You'll go through miles and miles of blooming rhododendron and mountain laurel as you hike next to the Susquehanna river then into Elk Neck State Forrest. You should definitely check it out when your traveling.
hi, could you make a video of some of your favourite gear and show us a potential loadout? :)
Crillebøj Yeah, I’d love that. Maybe even a couple different ones.....One for winter (with a winter pack) & one for spring/summer/fall with a different, smaller pack & loadout?
I'm going to call it...... I think you're the first person in River Country's sales history to go back for a second tent. 😂
I think you are right!
Interesting Fact : There are sites which analyze Amazon reviews to see whether they are real or not and the River Country Trekker 2.2 tent was rated an F for the reviews being HIGHLY DECEPTIVE!
This I believe.

@@TheOutdoorGearReview I'm sure more than a few of those reviews could be traced back to River Country staff! 🤔
I think he will go back for a third.
These videos keep my hope of gettin out the city and back into the sticks where I’m from, crazy what you’ll do for a girl lol thanks Luke
That tent reminds me of my first pup tent from Sears. I got it for Christmas when I was 10.
That Sears pup tent was probably much better.
We got our first one selling Rose Bud salve when we were kids.
Thank you for another great video. I love following along on your adventures. I really enjoyed the way you have incorporated new prostitute stories in your videos. Keep up the great work.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand is a great idea.
If you and Susan have never done it I highly recommend hiking to the top of McAfee Knob in Roanoke VA. It's a hard hike but we'll worth it. On the other side of the knob is a shelter with a good water source and the views from the knob are breathtaking.
If you come near the UK, Head for Scotland's wilderness. Breathtaking.
Whatever you test and is good I will buy. Thanks 🙏
Soto, in Japanese, means "outside" or "outdoors". Nice products. Enjoy Luke!
Thanks Luke for this one. My recommendation for you would be the Finnish Lapland area. There are many interesting spots, like the Kevo Canyon, Lemmenjoki valley and the mountain Halti area. Welcome!
I wish to see more bushcraft and survival videos, low budget emergency survival camping and such... it can be really cool!
Found your channel yesterday. Im ready lets go!!!
Heck yeah Jesse, let's do this brother. Thanks for watching.

Fairbanks Alaska! BTW if you're going cheap Walmart has some new "backpacking" tents in store that claim to be "wet weather tested".
Grand Canyon here in Arizona!!!! Lots of hiking there. They have some beautiful falls at bottom.
Come to Australia!!
But preferably in winter when the snakes aren’t out
I had my eye on that Soto Lantern ever since you dropped that Soto link for the table.
Deadwood ,South Dakota ..Plenty of hiking trails in the black hills. I'd enjoy buying you two a cup of coffee.
Come to the UK and go to the Lake District. V.small by US standards, but beautiful non the less.
Lake district is ok if you like water, but, come to Wales if you want hills...lol
I always have to brew up a pot of coffee when I watch your videos!
Should try and make your way down to NZ, Whanganui Journey, Stuart Island and Abel Tasman Coast Track are only some of the tracks we offer. Also think you might enjoy the scenery we have to offer haha
I love the "prostitute with my wallet", some one has a story to tell. LOL
Luke,
Great video as always. A lot of good information.
The Knife and cutting board look great for Car Camping.
The Soto Stove and Lantern intrigue me. I might have to buy them to play with them. (The stove won't replace mine but it does look nice.)
The Tent, well it truly looks like junk, I wouldn't buy it. (This is coming from the guy who will buy waterproof gear and hit it 3 times with a Water Repellent before I even try it out.)
The Poncho, well I have given up on them ever since you did the review of the Swiss Rain Cape. I picked up one each for my Wife and myself and we love the damned things. They look funny but they are great for Florida.
Look into/check out the Pacfic Crest Trail (spans from Mexico to Canada)
Honestly, if you're gonna bring the meat and onions, why not also bring the wine to deglaze the pan for a sauce?
Destination: New Zealand, more specificly the South Island, it has some amazing trails down there, the central North Island has some great ones also.
Cant wait for some more stormy, longer overnighters
love watching your adventures. do you ever use two way radios while out camping or hiking?
Recommendations:
USA - Oregon: on the coast, basically anywhere, many of the national forests, I could go on (will be more specific if you want)
Northern California: Trinity Alps, Siskiyou Wilderness
Outside of the US -
Colombia: Medellin, Bogotá since I'm assuming you don't have a ton of Spanish under your belt, I could be wrong, and if at all possible the coffee region (Quindío). Gorgeous places around there. Like...just go for that region.
Argentina (super far away but whatever): Buenos Aires, Patagonia, Iguazú, Jujuy
Uruguay: Montevideo
Ooh. Also-
Texas: Guadalupe Mountains NP
Tilson Lake Loop, in Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, Canada. 2-3 day hike from start to finish, with campsites. Amazing views in the park!
