Congratulations to Madison! That's an amazing score for the ASVAB . I wish her the best in the Navy. I served 23 years in the Air Force as an Independent Duty Medical Technician and worked with many members of other branches. I was fortunate to tour the only white ship in the Navy while in Saudi Arabia...so cool!

I enjoyed the video and the info you offered. I'm always learning. Having two daughters of my own, one in college and one a high school senior, I appreciated how much you shared with us of how proud you are of your daughter. Something very special of being a dad of girls. I hope you do not mind, but I will be praying for your daughter and your family. I am proud of her also for her willingness to serve this great country of ours. May the Lord bless her.

    Hey Luke!
Congratulations to your daughter, and her selection of the Navy. I am a former Canadian Navy veteran, of the Gulf War. I was a Combat and Tactical Officer. My classification over-lapped with the career choice she has made. She is looking forward to a very challenging and rewarding career.
I can certainly relate to the surprise choice of service she has chosen. For myself, I had initially assumed that I would have joined the Air Force, having attained my private pilot's licence as an Air Cadet. Many, many, years following that, my three children have surprised me with their choices for a career in the military. My oldest is an EMT. skydiver, and bushcrafter. Just last month she was accepted into the Canadian Forces as a SARTECH(Search and Rescue Technician.) This is rare, as most SARTECHs are recruited from within the trades of already serving members. At 5'2", she is tough as nails, and I can't be more delighted as I have several family members and friends within the SAR community.
My son, who graduates from high school this year, has been accepted by he Canadian Army as a MedTech, and will begin his Basic Training in July, after he graduates.
My youngest, who will graduate in a couple of years, has every intention of becoming a fighter pilot, and has just received acceptance to attend the powered flight course, to receive her private pilot's licence, this summer, through Air Cadets.
What astounds me is that I never figured any of my children would have aspired to the military, and now, I have all three on that career path. I can only encourage you to continue with your support and pride for your daughter's endeavors.
Finally. thank you for another fantastic video! I always look forward to your uploads, and I always appreciate all that you do.
    Take care!

I was sooo proud of my "baby" brother when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps back in 1982! I have been so proud of him ever since. And when he died and was given a full military funeral, I cried like a baby. Today, when I see the Marines marching or hear The Halls of Montezuma, I still tear up and sometimes even cry like a baby.
Congratulations to your daughter for her patriotism and to you and Suzie for raising her right.

Hey brother. Not in the navy but I am in the military in Canada. I joined in 2002 right after 9/11 to fight terrorism. I joined as a medic. I did a tour to Afghanistan and worked with the Americans. Loved every minute of it. Did that until 2years ago and then switched to firefighter on an air base. The military is awesome. You get respect and you just feel great. Loads of opportunities. I wish your daughter all the best in her career.

LOL. You may not believe this, but I thought just moments before you told us what Branch She went for I knew it was Navy. Great Choice. Ex Navy, ShellBack 73. She'll know or will learn what that is. I joined on my 17th Birthday also, did not have to go to Boot Camp, because I had done it as a Naval Sea Cadet at 15, Volunteered for Vietnam, went to A School, Signed a contract for 6 years, pushbutton to PO3rd Class. Sailed around the World before 19. Great Life if you keep your goals in sight. Congrats to Both of you, and Anchors Away and a Salute to Her.

12 years in the Navy. Been to over 50 countries and 6 continents, everywhere but Antartica. With your daughters job I think she would have to go through a background clearance. She will enjoy it very much. My advice to her would be to take the west coast over a duty station before the east coast. The east coast is so cloce to Washington so they are more strict then the west coast. Also if given the chance to take a duty station out side of the U.S. then take it. I spent two years in Alaska and two years in Iceland and loved it. Anyway best wishes to her.

This is the third time I've watched this video. Your attitude about life and about yourself is inspiring, Luke. Although you profess to be a "Lone Wolf" you would be an asset to any team due to your can do attitude and eagerness to put hard work into any effort. I loved the teams I had in the military that I worked with and/or led; and other teams in civilian life as well. I think you not only teach us about outdoor gear but you also inspire us to live a better life and be a better person.

Yay, Navy! My brother is a Navy chaplain. He was living in Boone, married, kids, in the mid 2000s when he started considering military chaplaincy and he made that same trip down to Charlotte where he was sworn in. His years serving have sent him to the Persian Gulf; Okinawa (where I got to visit them while there-great experience flying up over Alaska and halfway round the world!); Newport; Monterey; Norfolk; and recently hurricane relief work in the Caribbean. He has loved his Navy experience. Your daughter will look great in the uniform, love the experience and see the world. I have been so impressed by the integrity and quality of people in the Navy I've met thru my brother. Quick question: Have you ever considered putting the date somewhere, like in the into, maybe small, when you do trip videos? I live in the SE so I often find myself trying to mentally compare the weather where I am to what I see on your video and try to figure out when it might have been, if the weather was similar.

Twenty year Navy vet here Luke. Your daughter's military experience will be what she chooses to make it. In Basic Training she will be doing things that seem tedious and don't make sense but everything has it's purpose and a lesson behind it. Take it all in with an open mind and a sense of humor. It will break her down at times but in the end will rebuild her stronger. It will all be worth it when she gets to P'cola. I received my Officer commissioning there, great town. In school and out in the fleet the best advice I can give is to be a leader in EVERY job she is assigned. There are NO unimportant jobs. Opportunities to excel are often found in the most unlikely duty stations and positions. Follow those young Senior Petty Officers and Chiefs who are forging ahead in their careers and learn all she can from them. Network with everyone in her field and stay in touch with as many of her fellow shipmates as possible. This will be invaluable if she seeks opportunities outside of military service. Take Care.
    C.S.S, LCDR, USN retired.

Luke, I'm a retired Navy guy. I did 20 years Navy and 8 years Army Reserve. I can tell you that she made a good choice. I looked at all the services when I decided to go active and I chose the Navy because I wanted to see the world. At the end I had seen 48 states and around 40 countries. Not to mention I met and worked with some of the most amazing people on the planet. Her job will open up a huge field of great paying jobs when she gets out as well. You really should be proud.

    Nice vids.
One minor trick I learned is that it is better to fold the groundcloth under itself, not on top. That way, if any water seeps between the tent's floor and the groundcloth, it can flow out instead of getting trapped in the fold under the floor.

Hey Luke, great video as always. Been delving deep into your older videos, you have so many. Don't know if I'll ever catch up! I almost died laughing when you were setting up the tent and mentioning the ridiculous colors, the flashing Teletubbie's and the farting noise your sleeping mat made pumping it up. LMAO! That says it all right there!! I have a Eureka K2-XT 4 - season tent which is bright yellow, but it's an awesome tent and the yellow color is kinda nice in the morning, even if it's a cloudy day, it looks sunny on the inside.

Congratulations to your daughter and you and your wife. I’m watching your video while I’m on my own solo (sort of. Me and my black Lab Max ) overnighter. For early Christmas I received a 4 person Cabela’s Alaskan Guide tent and a Blackpine Sports “Big Johnson” +20 sleeping bag. 100” x 45”. I’m 6’7” tall so it’s perfect. I’ll use this for deer hunting so we are trying it out. I probably should have gotten the 6 person but I think with an inflatable bed and a chair it will be perfect. Max has his own sleeping bag but usually winds up in mine with me. No, he’s not 67 pounds of spoiled. Thanks Luke. You are my number one outdoor channel. S&H

Congrats to you and your daughter on her enlistment. I served in the USN for 5 years from '75 thru '80 - always on carriers. Her career choice is pretty awesome and should prepare her for any number of post-service career options if she ever decides she's had enough.
I completely empathize with your pride - when my son enlisted in the Marines it was both the proudest and the hardest day of my life. Fortunately, he served honorably and came home in one piece, more or less, his only injury being drill-related.
Boot camp should be a piece of cake for her if she's been working out. It's mostly head games - tear 'em down and build 'em back up the way you need them to be. If she can be enthusiastic and coachable for 9 weeks she will do very well!

Congrats to her, that is wonderful! I had a feeling you though were going to say she is going into the Navy. My mentor did exactly what your daughter is going to do. She did all sorts of cryptography during her time in the Navy.

1, can you please let us know what happened to your sleep pad and 2, it may not be exciting to many, but, it would be really helpful to see an instructional vid on how to break camp with wet and/or snowed on gear. I never know the best way to properly pack up my wet tent, tarp, undercloth n other wet gear and not mess it up w my dry stuff and still be able to fit it all back compactly enough to carry it back w/o issue. To be honest a lot of us talk abt it and no one seems to have a good AND functional solution. It would be nice to see how it's done in real time. Most vids just edit the stuff out of the breakdown if shown at all. Thank you for another great vid congrats to your Daughter, I'll keep her in my prayers. Have a Blessed and Joyous Holiday.

It's great to hear about your daughter. I am very proud of her too. What made her change her mind to go with the Navy instead of the Army? What was she planning to do in the Army? So how is your son doing too. I know he loved the outdoors and hiking and camping?

The corn chowder is one of my favorite PG soups. The poblano peppers give it just the right umph.
