My brother in law works at a large mall. One store tossed out their windtunnel AND their bissel steam cleaner. They said they didn't work..and the reason? BELTS! I now have two almost new machines, for free, and thanks to your video, I replaced the belts with ease...Thank You!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!!! You just saved me an $85 repair bill at shop. There was a burning smell coming from my vacuum, and after watching this video, I was brave enough to open it up and inspect the 2 belts. They both looked fine. Then I checked the bearing (?), that metal rod inside the roller brush....total wrapped up in hair and dust and the roller was not spinning freely. When I cleaned it all up, the vacuum worked as good as new! You guys rock!
I am delighted to have watched this excellent video, changed the belts and roller on my wind tunnel and saved almost 100$ in service and parts. Thanks soooo much. I feel like I have a new vacuum!!!!!!
Thank you so much for posting this video. My husband wanted to take our vacuum to the repair shop, but I now feel confident that I can fix the problem myself.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Your video saved me a ton of money. My belt slipped off and by watching your video I was able to repair my vacuum without having to take it to a professional. I'm so happy.
Didn't realize how easy it is to fix this vacuum. Had this sitting in my garage for over a year and I even bought a new vacuum cleaner. Looked at this video to find out that my flat belt was torn in half for whatever reason. Ordered the part and waiting for it to come in! thanks for the video Chris.
Just wanted to say thanks. I just replaced my Hoover Wind Tunnel belt--without the manuel-- thanks to you guys! I didn't realize you could slip the belt under the pin...I kept looking for a way into the motor casing...so thank you!
Thank you !! Didn't know anything about my hoover - the belt had broken but had no clue about it and was about to bring to shop before seeing this - bought a $5 belt and it works great again. Appreciate it.
Thanks Man!. The trick to replacing the belts is to get it upside down on the bench where you can apply enough pressure to get the belt back in place.. Thanks again.
I was having problems with my Windtunnel especially the drive system so I took it apart and did some heavy cleaning, it helped with the suction but didn't solve the problem. I saw your video and picked up two new belts and it's running like new again. Thank you.
Thanks for the video... My Windtunnel's belts are fine, but it has been giving a burning smell recently and smoking. I checked again, rewatched your video and saw you spin the brushroll. Our brushroll still has long brushes, but spins only if you force it. I'm waiting for the brush to come in at the vacuum store. Once that's fixed, the next project is getting the on/off switch to work again (i need to look at the link you commented on previously)
I had previously replaced the brush belt before without an issue when the flat broke however, I thought I was going to have to call an army to help me put it on. It seemed impossible, desperate, I got on line and found this. For those of you who didn't find the video clear on this part, get the flat belt on the pin, put the the other end on the black plastic wheel as much as possible,, hold the belt with your left to keep it on track, roll the wheel many times with right hand and the belt will fall into place. No super strength required!
Thank you so much!! This video was very helpful!! I tried to use the written directions from Hoover, and they left out important info. I truly appreciate your help!
Hi Eric, Another major problem with this vacuum is the actuator arm assembly, hoover part 43143046. This arm is the arm that actually engages the self-propel motor, when you push the handle forward and backward. What happens is that when the machine is picked up using the handle, instead of the carrying handle on the back, it strips the self-propelled wire out of this actuator arm. With the vacuum reclined, look at where the upright part meets the base of the vacuum, you can check the arm.
Thanx for the video. My belt just broke, but the brush hadn't been spinning for a while. I never considered that the flat belt may have been stretched such that it was no longer doing its job. Thanx again for the great tips!
@whcernan I have the same problem with loose new v-belts. I think you just have to replace the brush roller. I haven't tried it yet, but every single other part of the system looks great. My brush roller looks great too but its the only thing I can think of. Shame, the brushes on it are fine. Note that there is a workaround - pull out enough screws to let the main plastic come loose that covers it all from the top. Then let the tensioner slip past its stop. It will put more tension on the v-belt
@Mithwada Your vacuum has a two belt system. You will need to replace both belts in order for the brushroll to spin. It keeps stopping because the Hoover V belt is worn down on the sides and when the brushroll contacts the carpet it stops spinning. Change the Hoover V belt and your problem will be solved.
Greetings. We will see if we can get a video done on this repair. The dirt sensor is actually a smaller laser type instrument that is in the hose of the vacuum cleaner. When dirt passes by this laser, it turns red indicating that the machine is picking up dirt. If yours is continuously showing red then you must have some small dirt or debris stuck on the laser in the hose. You'll need to pretty much disassemble the entire vacuum, and I would recommend to take it in to a repair shop.
Hello, this is a great video. I was scared of replacing the belts and have been using the vacuum for about 3 years now. After watching the video I think I can do it. However I was wondering do these vacuums need any kind of lubrication like oil in or around the motor somewhere?
Hey Chris, Guess it was my weak hands that couldn't get the wide belt back on, but then, I'm 64. Anyway, looks like you might have cross-threaded the screws putting them back in. Better to back them up until they "click" then go forward. Otherwise, thanks for the help!
@Ayplus Just use a regular hand screwdriver. The screws are very easy to remove and the drill isn't necessary. They just used it in the video because they could.
Thanks for the video!! Someone gave me one of these vacuums, she thought her husband had replaced the belt..............and he had..........the small one! The other one was missing!! Simple fix, and I have a good vacuum!!
Thanks so much, it would have taken me a bit to figure out how to roll the larger belt on the wheel. I appreciate the video. Interestingly enough the new V-Belt was bigger than my old one and was too loose. Thankfully the old one was still working.
How did that lubing the brush roll's bearings work for you? You should be able to easily spin the brush while your holding the end caps with your fingers. If it continues to smoke, you may just want to replace the brush roller itself.
It sounds as if your roller brush may be going bad, or the pulley that the belt attaches to might be bad as well. The best thing for you to do would be to take out the roller brush, and hold the brush with your two pointer fingers, and try spinning the brush, if the brush doesn't spin, then you'll need to replace it, as the bearings have probably gone bad.
The belt replacement video is grat1 I would like a video on how to get to the embedded dirt sensor to fix it. Ours stays red all the darned time. I've read the sensor is actually a microphone that listens for dirt bouncing around, but that the mic can come loose. If you have time to show me how, I'm game to operate on this vacuum.
@mglennx Absolutely! I'm happy to try and help you with Hoover WindTunnel 2 Repair Issue. I've uploaded a parts diagram of that model showing you how the parts attach I can't put a link in this response, so I'll have to email it to you through your TH-cam account.
@Mithwada Thanks for your comment. The belt will not tighten unless the head of the machine is in the vacuuming position, or in other words when you step on the handle release pedal, at this point is when the belt tightens around the roller brush. It's also best to replace both the flat belt and the v-belt at the same time. If you are looking at the belt, make sure the head is pushed down and this should fix your problem.
@batman6777 Thanks Batman! lol. I know it's the motor shaft, but I assumed the average Joe would better understand Metal Pin, then Motor Shaft. Thanks for watching!
Great video, but I have a related problem. It seems the idler pulley for the v-belt is not doing it's job resulting in a loose v-belt. If I'm right, it should be spring loaded and articulating up and down, correct? The pulley spins, but the arm it's mounted on doesn't move and I can't get the hood off to see how or if it's working. The Carpet/Hard selector on top doesn't seem to be engaging anything, just sliding back and forth. Any thoughts on this?
@GoVacuums : At 1:17, note the white "gasket" wrapped around the left side of the brush roller. I am servicing exactly the same unit, V-belt is horribly loose, OLD OR NEW, and it's because whatever that gasket is doesn't exist on my system. I go to parts sites and they don't list that part at all. What is it and how do I get one?
I have a Hoover Self-Propelled WindTunnel Bagless vacuum. The problem I'm having is that the vacuum will not turn off using the on/off switch. I took the self-propelled portion apart and saw the when the switch is turned to 'off' the mechanism doesn't move to the off position. Is there anything that can be done by me, or does it require I take it in to a repair shop?
Hey guys! I replaced both belts, and I still have a loose brushroll. I disassembled everything and nothing looks broken. The only way I could get the brushroll working properly was if I re-assembled it so that the brush tensioner wasn't resting on the stop that lets you disengage it. Well now the tensioner has much more travel and it pushes against the V-belt, so I can vacuum my carpets just fine, but I can't disable the brushroll with the switch anymore. Also the brushroll look fine. Ideas?
Thank you for the video, but I still have a problem. I took a look at my vacuum, and my power drive belt seemed to be stretched out. I went to the store and got a new belt, and I put it in. This one seemed to have the same problem. All I had to do was pull it taught a bit manually and it would spin the brush. Unfortunately I can't pull it taught manually while it is running, and it wont stay taught. Any help would be appreciated.
I have replaced my belt just like shown but when I try to vacuum the belt keeps slipping off or smoking, is there something I'm doing wrong? It also squeaks, does it need oil?
This may be a dumb question but I have to ask. I just replace this old air filter in my Hoover windtunnel vacuum. Now I can feel the air passing through the filter. Is that normal? I'm assuming I never noticed it before because the last filter had a thick layer of dust on it.
@GoVacuums I bought a new drive belt and a new flat belt, but the new belt is too loose and wont catch the brush to spin it. If I turn the vaccum on, and take up the slack of the drive belt with the faceplate off, it catches and the brush will spin, but obviously I can't vacum with my finger in the drive belt. Any ideas? I double checked the part number to make sure I didn't buy the wrong belt. 3M is the brand of the belt that I got at Lowes, but it's supposed to be compatable. Any ideas?
you mentioned that the brushroll should move freely....mine does not. You also said it could be the bearings if it does not move freely......how do I fix it?
My Hoover Windtunnel model U5463-960 is loud and rattles when it runs. How do I clean the motor? I am hoping it is not time to retire this appliance. It sounds like a couple of stones rolling around inside a blender.
@sg4ea Yes, it very well could fix the power drive issue. The power drive unit relies on one of the two belts that fit this vacuum part #'s 38528035 & 38528034. Both ship for free from GoVacuum dot com
Your video is very clear, but I've been working on the wide belt for about 20 minutes, to no avail. Do you have the name of a good therapist, before I throw this vacuum cleaner through the window. Ugh!
@tommymack55 Hello, thanks for your support, and watching our GoVacuum video series. Here's a link to a repair tutorial that I've written showing you how to access the on / off switch for your Hoover Windtunnel. Hopefully this helps you;
I worked on my belts just last night, again - and still don't have it fixed. I liked my old Hoover much better. Still had belt problems, but didn't have screws to mess with or finger gymnastics to perform. Was much easier and quicker to change. This design is not an improvement.
The belt is burnt. Follow these steps: #1 replace boyfriend (optional), #2 order a new belt from Govacuum dot com, #3 install new belt (see instruction manual for directions or call us), #4 Keep curtains away from the vacuum & tell everyone you know about GoVacuum dot com... :)

Woohoo! I had a spare power drive belt, replace the stretched out old one and - IT MOVES! Thank you, GoVacuum!

awesome, thank you for making this video! Very clear on how to change the belts, and I wasn't aware of the need to replace the brush part.
Great video. I used it to help me replace the belts on my Hoover. Thanks!
Thank you so much for posting this very helpful video - I managed to fix the fan belt on my Hoover - I'm so proud of myself :-)
Thank you guys for taking the time to post these quick fixes. Easy stuff
Thank you for posting this extremely helpful video. I was able to confirm belt placement and fix my cleaner in no time!
You made me feel handy!!! And you saved me a trip to the repair shop...thanks! :)

I spent 20 minutes trying to get that belt around the wheel. After seeing the video, it took about 20 seconds. Thanks for the help.
thank you for posting this video...actually worked up a sweat getting the belt around the pin and wheel
Thank you so much for your help! I was trying to put the belt in the wrong place. If it weren't for you, I would have busted the whole thing!!
Thanks. That was a great tutorial.

The Hoover cord jams half way and I do not want to disassemble the entire thing to fix it. Is there an external adjustment for this?
Very informative, thanks!

Instructive, that why!!
Thank you!!!!!!
@Ayplus Hah, oops. You never know on the internet...
thanks, great info!
Time to replace it- you can find it at govacuum
My grandma thought that the belt on her Windtunnel broke except she had it on hard floor so the brushroll would not spin. LOL
that guy just killed the vacuum!!!!
I dont have an automatic drill. . wat do i do :(
