3M makes a whole line of materials to make our lives easier in the shop. I was just browsing some today for the GTO project. Having it dipped so I will need seam sealers, flutter kit and drip rail sealer. That panel adhesive is incredibly strong, I have seen sheet metal tear before it fails. Mark
You are very welcome Jeff. Back in the day flutter kits were widely used but manufacturing changed and it wasn't as needed but I understand the new Tacoma trucks have a big problem with hood flutter. Mark
I didn't find any carpet padding in there so you must have gotten it all cleaned out before you brought me the hood 😄. It is nice to use modern materials to make these older vehicles more of a joy to drive. I hope you wear the tires off the truck and get a lot of enjoyment from it. You will need to bring it out to some local shows too.
@@FoothillPaintandFabrication I plan on insulating the cab like a helicopter. I have a company making me armored acoustic glass for the windshield because the blower is right in front of it on the hot chick side and regular acoustic glass for the rest of it. It's all about who you know. You need to find an executive in the corporation that's a hotrodder. I also know a guy who's company makes vibration isolators for the aerospace industry. The people on the outside are on their own.
@@FoothillPaintandFabrication Yes. RenCool electric compressor with remote condenser and Spal fan. Old Air inside kit. EPAS performance electric P/S. My engine compartment will look stock except for maybe the blown 292.

@@FoothillPaintandFabricationYes, so far it looks like I can get it straight with the Feather Fill primer. I had the entire truck stripped and repainted in the early eighties. It has not been driven much at all, mostly stored inside one garage or another. Yep, I checked my brace an it's gonna need a Flutter Kit.
I was concerned about it pulling on the thin hood sheet metal causing a line doing both sides of the brace plus by doing the backside you really can't see it. Seems to be working out wonderfully so far. Darren told me he used to have carpet padding stuffed in there back in the day. Mark
I am sorry I didn't use an exact measurement. I installed the side pieces with the hood upside down and then measured the angles and length then screwed them together. Hope this helps.
In a perfect world yes but if your hood sheet metal is out of shape or air comes up through the engine compartment it will flutter at high speeds. Remember that the flat area of the hood from the firewall seal to about 1/3 of the hood is totally unsupported single thickness sheet metal with no real curve in it so it can bounce and flutter. Of course it isn't mandatory if you feel it isn't needed on your build and can always be added later if need be. Mark
Hey Mark The factory filled that gap for a reason. The support member needs that to do its supporting. I was surprised you didn’t do both sides. Sure don’t blame you for not wanting silicon in the shop. Bought some “Black Again” plastic restorer had silicone. Looks really good but couldn’t get off my hands for a day. Gets on everything and nothin will stick to it, let alone paint. Nice video Amigo.
@@jackcirrito3458 Darren asked me the same question about doing both sides. I am always cautious about stressing sheet metal and having a wave appear in the heat after the car or truck is completed. Applying the flutter kit to both sides of the brace seemed risky to me if the brace was to twist slightly plus I wanted the kit on the windshield side so you wouldn't see it with the hood up. It is just supporting the sheet metal so it should be fine. Mark

Back in the 70’s I stuffed that space with carpet padding. I had no idea something like that existing. Going to be a great daily driver!

I used black silicone ,works, a lot less "metal crickets" noise too
No silicone in the shop for me or near a body panel. To many bad experiences 😖

Do you only use it on the rear of the brace ? I like to overkill should you /could you put it on the front side of the brace too ?

What is the length of the wood brace you made to hold the Hood ?
I am sorry I didn't use an exact measurement. I installed the side pieces with the hood upside down and then measured the angles and length then screwed them together. Hope this helps.
Did you apply to the second flange on that brace?
Panel bond might work as well. I am sure this nvh dries more spongy though?
Not sure what flange you are speaking of. Yes panel bonding adhesive is far less forgiving for what I wanted to do here.
@FoothillPaintandFabrication that brace being a U channel. It has another lip/ flange on the other side that we can't see.

In a perfect world yes but if your hood sheet metal is out of shape or air comes up through the engine compartment it will flutter at high speeds. Remember that the flat area of the hood from the firewall seal to about 1/3 of the hood is totally unsupported single thickness sheet metal with no real curve in it so it can bounce and flutter.
Of course it isn't mandatory if you feel it isn't needed on your build and can always be added later if need be.
