    This is what the song means to me. The car is Jakob Dylan's (the singer) life. Once upon a time, there were two guiding lights in his life - his soulmate and himself. But his soulmate died, leaving the car with just one headlight. But the singer has decided that he is able to continue negotiating his life with just one headlight, even though the other, darkened headlight will forever remind him of what he has lost. But that's just me.

      @KwisatzHaderach77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yea, but "in the middle" is a hard one. I mean it could mean what Lex was spittin' on about, but there's a couple other things I've thought of as possibilities too, like it could be Biblical, there's Heaven (Top), Hell (Bottom), and Earth (middle). Since she's dead and he "thinks her death it must be killing me", he's trying to get himself to try just a little bit to get through this life with only the one headlight half of himself without his soul mate eh?
      There's other interpretations too, but that's what makes it good art, no?

    The organ is a Hammond organ run through a rotating speaker, popular in jazz and gospel. The galloping bass part with the straight drum beat really drives the song forward, and the sound you couldn’t name was a slide guitar.

    • @alexo5861
      @alexo5861 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@alexo5861 There is def a pedal or maybe lap steel for the electric slide break...but other slide playing in the song is absolutely a National Dobro Acoustic Steel String played likely with a bottleneck slide.

    In my eyes I look at this song as a musical link between two generations. The 1960-70s generation that remembers Bob Dylan in his heyday, and the one that got this song in the late 90s. I was only a two-year-old when this hit the radio but it's still pretty cool if you ask me! Iconic, poetic chill song with lots of nostalgia!

  • @promontorium
    @promontorium 2 ปีที่แล้ว +109

    I've listened to this song thousands of times for decades. I usually don't focus on lyrics, but this song is about a man who had a relationship with a woman. They both loved each other. He left for "more" in life.
    She never stopped loving him and felt trapped in their town. She killed herself. He comes back for the funeral and all these emotions come flooding back into him. He's trying to resolve the guilt of leaving, his heartbreak, her death, and whether or not he made the right choices.
    Was it better just making do in the town with her, was there some way through that had the best of all options? Or was she only going to hold him back?

    • @promontorium
      @promontorium 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The chorus is the conflict. The first part is his desire for greater things. "try a little. Nothing lasts forever."
      The second part is how good he had it with her, even if they didn't have much. "But... Me and Cinderella, we put it all together."
      Especially the line "We could drive it home with one headlight." The "one headlight" is metaphorical. It's "the middle" half way between nothing and everything. With her they made it work without being rich or having much. Life with her in the town wouldn't have been everything, but they made it work.

    Wow, this song finally won a poll? What stream was that? Cool! First time I'd heard this on the radio back in the days on an alternative and college radio stations, I was thinking it was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. lol. Then I found out it was a band called The Wallflowers when heard their songs more on regular radio stations and MTV videos. They had that old school feel to their songs. Which includes the singer (Jakob) who is the son of the legendary Bob Dylan! That explains everything, was definitely influenced.
    Bob Dylan was also in a supergroup band ,Traveling Wilburys which including Tom Petty! Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne (ELO) and George Harrison (The Beatles) . They were folk/roots rock, country rock. Check them out, too.
    You guys should see the video for this song later on, it's nice. The Wallflowers were a good alternative rock band during the '90s and '00s. This song was their biggest hit (mid '90s). See their other videos/songs like "The Difference" "6th Avenue Heartache", "Sleepwalker", "Beautiful Side of Somewhere", "Heroes". These were also on the radio at times.
    Good ear from Lex, too. The shuffle/jazz swing vibe she is feeling is probably from the organ and drums. Jazzy, church/gospel, swing music vibe. Also the blooming flower, ethereal, echoey sound, instrument is the slide/steel guitar or maybe the resonator guitar. These are used usually in country music, bluegrass, blues.

    Jakob Dylan: "I tend to write with a lot of metaphors and images, so people take them literally. The song's meaning is all in the first verse. It's about the death of ideas. The first verse says, 'The death of the long broken arm of human law.' At times, it seems like there should be a code among human beings that is about respect and appreciation. I wasn't feeling like there was much support outside the group putting together the record. In the chorus, it says, 'C'mon try a little.' I didn't need everything to get through, I could still get through - meaning 'one headlight."

That is a glass slide on the guitarist's finger while playing) There is also an acoustic resonator guitar overdubbed underneath towards the end. Lead singer... son of the great Bob Dylan (just trivia). The storyteller is dealing with the death of his friend, who he was with earlier in life. Friend, or lover, it doesn't matter. She killed herself after trying to handle all the ugliness of life and wound up jumping out her window (died of a broken heart disease... ended at her window ledge). The chorus says that when they were together life was so good and easy (me and Cinderella, we put it all together). So easy that they could have driven home with one headlight and it would have worked out fine. This all leads to the final verse, where he's looking around at his life without her and it sucks (her death, it must be killing me).

    Songs about man trying to find peace from his long lost tragic love story... These lyrics are sad.. Dark.. Tragic.. It's more like a poem than just lyrics

    Reportedly, in an interview Jakob Dylan (singer/songwriter) was alluding to the death of ideas.
    I may not have this spot on, but I can give an interpretation that I think is fairly apt.
    Throughout the verses of the song he is alluding to the death of ideas or inspiration, and therefore the loss of hope that can come with that. He also explores the self awareness and longing for better that people experience when they are put in undesirable situations.
    He then opines in the chorus that time is fleeting and that you must stay motivated, and that you can even get where you want to be in life with even the most broken of situations.
    I truly love this song.

    This is a great band. Not huge commercial success. Jacob Dylan on vocals, the son of Bob Dylan.

    Wallflowers have some really nice songs. Others have mentioned 6th avenue heartache which also has Adam duritz from The counting Crows on it. But also Josephine and three Marlenas are great wallflowers songs
    Just like the counting Crows, wallflowers tell great little stories in their songs. The line in this song about the place being like an old beat-up truck, where you turn the engine but the engine doesn't turn... Very evocative like the rest of the song

    I always thought it was more like: "there's got to be something better than this out there - you only live once, so you might as well go for it and try to find that better life instead of just staying stuck here."

    The writer Jake Dylan said that people tended to take this song too literally. Obviously it wasn’t as he was using metaphors and images to write not about the death of a girl but the repression of one’s ideals by others and the struggle to break through and be recognised.

    At 4:12 Lex asked what is that? I think you're hearing the tremelo from the Leslie speaker. Leslies are commonly used with Hammond organs and also with electric guitar

    My favorite by them is Sleepwalker. In fact it's one of my all time top ten favorite songs. 6th Avenue Heartbreak is also really, really good.
    The lead singer is Jacob Dylan. He is Bob Dylan's son.
