Winwood has had one of the most illustrious careers in rock: lead singer of the Spencer Davis Group at age 16, founding member of Traffic, part of the supergroup Blind Faith, and tons of great solo work. He's also plays multiple instruments, but he's best known for being one of the great keyboardists of all time.

Brad & Lex, you'll love his "Roll With It", "Finer Things", "Valerie" and more!!! He's had the most amazing voice since he was a teenager in The Spencer Davis Group!! edit- great songwriter and keyboard player as well.

Finer things, Back in the high life and Valerie evoke the same feelings in you as higher love. The chorus's on all these are just on another level, they really give you a soaring, uplifting, happy feeling. Winwood was really killing it with this early-mid 80 collaborative stuff. Its not even his natural style of music, but MAN are these some of the greatest songs of the 80's. The studio versions are masterpieces of uplifting music.

This one is a spiritual song, Think about it, there must be higher love, look inside your heart, I'll look inside mine, without it, life is wasted time... With Chaka Khan singing bring me a higher love with a gospel sound that should make a believer out of anybody! The crank who called this song ''tripe" compared to Stevie's work with Traffic has lost his love for Steve. Don't miss Steve's song "Can't Find My Way Home" which is one of the most beautiful songs of my generation, but doesn't make his other work trash! The unmistakeable guitar of Nile Rogers, playing his hit maker. Steve Winwood’s discography is hella-deep, from the 60s with the Spencer Davis Group hits like Gimme Some Lovin’ and I’m a man, sung when he was just 16-17, to Blind Faith to the amazing band Traffic, which bridged psychelia into some of the tastiest jazz-rock ever devised, to his huge hits as a solo artist in the 80s. Check out his hit from 1980 called When You See a Chance - he was really one of the first people from the 60s/70s to fully embrace the synth revolution and make something completely unique out of it.

This is one of my favorite 80's hits from Steve Winwood, who had been a professional keyboardist and singer/songwriter since he was 16 y/o with the Spencer David Group He sang the lead on their hit I'm A Man, which confused people because they didn't realize he was a teenager or white! 😆). Lex enjoyed the same things about this song that I did. The chorus is what reeled me in, and the elaborate percussion section caught my ear too, as did the backing vocals provided by Chaka Khan.
"Higher Love" was a #1 hit for Steve Winwood, and has become his signature song, winning him Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Male Vocal Performance at the 1987 Grammy Awards. It's one of his 10 Top 40 solo hits on the Billboard Hot 100, which include six Top 10 hits and two #1 hits. Here are his Top 40 hits in chronological order:
"While You See A Chance" (#7 in 1981)
    "Higher Love" (#1 in 1986)
    "Freedom Overspill" (#20 in 1986)
"The Finer Things" (#8 in 1987)
"Back In The High Life Again" (#13 in 1987)
    "Valerie" (#9 in 1987)
"Roll With It" (#1 in 1988)
"Don't You Know What The Night Can Do?" (#6 in 1988)
    "Holding On" (#11 in 1989)
"One And Only Man" (#18 in 1990)
NOTE: "Valerie" was originally released in 1982, and remixed in 1987. The original 1982 version peaked at #70 on the Hot 100, and has a rather simple, synthesized sound. The 1987 version has more layers of sound, and sounds more modern. Though I like both versions, I like the 1987 remix better.
If I had to recommend four more songs from the list above, I'd recommend "While You See A Chance," "The Finer Things," "Valerie" (1987 version), and "Holding On."

Higher Love is a 1986 song, from the English singer Steve Winwood fourth solo LP Back in the High Life. Winwood's soulful song got him two Grammy Awards, Best Record and Best Male Pop Vocal.

Steve Winwood is one of the most talented, most versatile and creative musicians of all time. Winwood has been around a very long time and was involved with just about every top musician throughout the decades. He played with Hendrix on one of those great albums if that tells you anything.

Thank you. Another 80’s classic. The entire album Back In The High Life is great. Steve Winwood has been one of my go to artist for a “pick me up for 40 years”. R&B stars Chaka Kahn performs the background vocals. Nile Rogers (Chic) guitar, David Frank (The System) synthesizers, John “JR” Robinson (Rufus & Chaka Kahn) drums, Eddie Martinez (Morris Day and many others) guitar.

After this song was played on the radio the DJ gave a caller a chance to win tickets to see him in concert. All she had to do was tell him the first line of the song.
But she didn't know and kept asking for a hint. He said "think about it" and she'd try to remember and then ask for a hint and he'd say "think about it" again. She finally gave up and asked for the answer and he said:think about it" again. 😁

Lex, your a treat! I’m really glad you liked this song and all his music is great! Brad, I really think your missing out on the music part of music! No one I ever knew growing up listening from the early sixties really cared much about what the songs were about (generally rock, pop rock or jazz and blues) and were always moved by the beat and sounds and singing even though we couldn’t understand all the lyrics, hundreds of them are still my favorite songs! These days you have the internet to look up the lyrics. Love ya though Brad!

Steve Winwood has been in fantastic bands since the sixties. I am very partial to his band "Traffic".
A lot of musicians from the 60's and 70's tried to adopt an "80's" sound. Winwood helped define what the 80's sound was. If you were fifteen and wished, you were in a popular rock band think about the fact that 15 yr. old Winwood was.

He’s been around since the 60s when he was a teen in a group called Spencer Davis Group which has quite a few great classics but he was also in Traffic which was a phenomenal 3 piece band and Blind Faith which was a supergroup for one album I believe..he has a lot of history and was already considered a legend when having his solo 80s hits

Brad my man, you do have some good moments too with your reactions, but too often ( like in this one ) you seem so totally engrossed in trying to analyse songs that you forget to let yourself feel the music itself .. @@Braedensground That's unfair--she moves about when the song is exactly right and demands movement and it seems right for most of us listening who react to music the way she does! Not "for attention!" She got the music and voices completely and quickly, and he was listening intently to the lyrics--what more could you ask for, except smooth lies a lot of others give you when they pretend to appreciate something!
