This was my wedding song in 2001. We were married 20 years, 8 months, and 3 days when I lost him earlier this year, to a combination of long-term health issues complicated by the current plague. The chorus really fit us both, a couple of introverts who didn't want to be out there for the whole world, but we wanted to share our inner selves with each other, because we each knew the other would understand what made us tick.

If this is the song you connected to with the most after a break-up and not just because "it was our song", but because you related to it on a deeper level with the circumstances of the break-up and the person you were with, then chances are that person never really ever saw you to begin with. If it was a relationship of any time past a year, then you have to realize this person isn't worth the time and energy spent in remembering their loss. I don't say this just for you in particular, since you already said you got over it, but for others that may be currently sharing in that particular connection to this song. Why feel bad about losing someone that never even saw you all that time you were together, you know?

This song was written within the context of a movie entitled City of Angels. And the singer is portraying the role of the lead character of that film, who is an angel who falls in love with a woman and is willing to exchange his immortality in order to romance her. So with this in mind, the lyrics of the song become much more understandable.

  • @Sl0thL0veChunk

Goo Goo Dolls are a classic 90s band with TONS of hits. And their lead singer John Rzeznik (good luck figuring out how to say that) has an iconic voice. They dropped this song for the soundtrack to a Nicolas Cage movie about an angel that falls in love with a girl and she literally cannot see him because he's a literal angel, so the lyrics "I just want you to know who I am" make sense for the soundtrack haha. So many hits you could check out by these guys, including:
    "Name"
    "Slide"
    "Sympathy"
    "Black Balloon"
    "Here Is Gone"

That being said, I much prefer their earlier records, funny that most of their fans don't really seem to know their first record nor their second, "Jed". "Jed" was released on Metal Blade Records, a small metal indie label which had launched Slayer, LOL. That was a fantastic record. But I asked Robbie in 1992, "why are you guys changing your sound?" and he said, "we've been at this for a few years now. We need to make some money, man". They've said in other interviews that their early period was a lot of fun, touring and partying, and that they thought everything was funny. They were still playing clubs which were half-filled, not really getting anywhere.

Wow, one of my favorite bands... Johnny's voice is both a little raspy and very breathy. He was a terrible singer when the band started and sang only a few songs (the man couldn't stay on key to save his life back then), while Robbie sang the vast majority. This shifted over time with Johnny becoming the front man. Their first somewhat popular song (on college radio at least) was by Johnny and was called "We Are The Normal" from their 1993 album Superstar Car Wash (awesome album start to end, and Johnny had learned to sing on key by then). Their first big hit was also by Johnny and was called "Name" from their 1995 album A Boy Named Goo (my first album from them, and also awesome start to finish). This continued as Johnny took over lead singing duties more and more. They blew up with "Iris", "Slide", "Black Balloon", and "Broadway"... all songs by Johnny off their 1998 album Dizzy Up The Girl (once again, awesome from start to finish). I'm pretty sure that every song that has had radio play has been sung by Johnny. Nowadays Robbie typically sings like 2 tracks at most, but "Lucky Star" (Superstar Car Wash), and "Burnin' Up" (A Boy Named Goo) have always been among my favorites. IMO, they were at their best from 1993-1998, when they were still splitting lead vocals about 50/50 and the punk/metal influence remained obvious. After that it started to become too much of "Johnny's band" and song variety kind of went to shit (albeit with a lot of great songs still among them). They're still kicking around too -- their most recent album, Miracle Pill, released in 2019, with the titular track getting quite a lot of radio play. They're supposed to have a new album (13th studio album) coming out this year as well. Their last two albums -- Boxes and Miracle Pill -- are classified as Pop though, instead of Rock like their prior albums. Johnny has said the new one one, which he produced himself using pre-digital era techniques, is more "experimental" and likely won't get much radio play. I'm not sure what that means, but I'll be interested to hear it when it drops. Anyway, good on them for having a nearly 40-year career in music. That's a pretty exclusive club to be in.

This is one of those songs that was *_heavily_* overplayed on radio when it came out, and wasn't to my taste at the time. Then a couple of decades later it comes on, like, in the grocery store, and I find myself digging it. Then I wonder whether I like it out of nostalgia or whether it's a genuinely good song when you don't hear it ten times a day. I decided this one is a genuinely good song.

    • @jack-of-all-trades1234
      @jack-of-all-trades1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I didn't like much of the 90s rock at the time. I was in to heavier stuff.
But now that I am older and my tastes have broadened I hear these songs in a different way.
Breaking Benjamin for example is one of my top five favorites and I didn't even care for them when they first emerged on to the scene.
It could just be that your preferences have evolved over time.

@@jack-of-all-trades1234 With "Iris" and some other songs, the main thing is that I just didn't dig on relationship songs. My relationships were fine: no pining away, no devastating breakups, not even OMG she's my _soulmate._ It just seemed sappy.
It's still not personally relevant, but I branched out from grunge, punk, and metal into stuff like Chris Cornell's solo work, Alkaline Trio, and Snow Patrol, which I liked for stylistic similarity, and the relationship stuff came along with it. So now I can engage with "Iris" more like all the music I enjoy about drug addiction and alienation. It's not me, but I can appreciate the artistry of it.

This is one of my most favourite songs that I personally listen to a lot and don’t get sick of. Even though I know it’s supposed to be about an angel, i think it’s pretty relatable in that we all feel like sometimes we want someone to understand us better and really know us as an individual.

So as someone from Buffalo and seeing these guys before they were famous I can honestly say some of the nicest people ever. When this song came out my oldest daughter was young she loved this song. I saw Robbie the bass player at a country fair and I introduced her she was awestruck and he was as nice as could be. Also Robbie has a festival every year and gives local artists a stage to play on. It’s called music is art fest

The best version is with lyrics
And I'd give up forever to touch you
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now
And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
And sooner or later it's over
I just don't wanna miss you tonight
And I don't want the world to see me
    'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's meant to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know you're alive
And I don't want the world to see me
    'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's meant to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And I don't want the world to see me
    'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's meant to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And I don't want the world to see me
    'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's meant to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

I’ve never really liked the Goo Goo Dolls, but they hold a special place in my heart. I was on my first deployment on the USS John F Kennedy. We were out to sea in the Persian gulf. The Goo Goo Dolls played a concert on the flight deck. I was in a mid-deployment funk and someone suggested I go outside and check out the concert. It was AMAZING! There were a couple of other ships that pulled up along side us to enjoy the concert. The music made me feel a lot better.

The lyrics are obscurity, almost an enigma...that's why you don't "get it" per se-but with the music you feel it! It's like an emotional expression, like a building up to an explosion.....where what you say is not as important as why you say it-not surface stuff, that's deep.
That's why these lyrics are perfect...you've got to go deeper to know me(so to say), you've got to feel me(so to say).
    In my opinion...it's deep.

It's to my understanding that the director ex. From the movie "City of Angels" showed this movie the a bunch of musicians and artists and asked them to make the music for the movie after seeing it. Among these artists where Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette and the Goo Goo Dolls. At least these three are the one I can remember off the top of my head 😅✌️

The early Goo Goo Dolls from the late 1980s is much different and better. They were more of a faster punk rock band at that time. Their first record was released by a small indie label which went out of business, I actually interviewed Johnny Rzeznik via telephone during this period, probably 1987 or so. They were all very big fans of The Replacements. Their second record, "Jed" was released by Metal Blade Records, the same small indie label which gave us Slayer. They were such a fun band back then. I met the band in-person in 1992 during their "Superstar Carwash" tour. The show was very small, Robbie invited me onto their bus afterward. They were starting to change their sound into something mellower and I remember Robbie telling me, "we've been at this for a few years now, we need to make some money, man". Up until the "Boy Named Goo" period they weren't really doing very well. I was in my young 20s at that time, I get where he was coming from now, and I swore if I ever met him again i'd apologize. But man were they ever a fun band at that time, and fun to hang-out with, too. I was in a band at that time and Robbie gave me his phone number and said, "send me a tape of your band".
