    Kind of weird to just start watching a hunting video and see an old buddy from way back. Last time I saw Trail I was in London 20 years ago. Good job on the elk buddy.

    Awesome Video and super stoked you finally sealed the deal! I once watched a video on Corey Jacobsen explaining how he solo hunts. After calling, he moves up towards the bull and down wind at least 40 yards each. Elk have stereoscopic hearing which means they can pinpoint your location with their ears within a yard or two just as we can spot a tree on the other side of a drainage.
    Most of the bulls that you called in look to your exact location and did not see another bull or cow so they took off.
    You might know this already know everything stated above but in the video it seemed like you called and stayed in the same spot.
    I was biting my nails hoping that the bull wouldn't hang up and would continue towards you. Especially the bull at the 27:00 minute mark. I was hoping you were going to work your way down to the ridge exactly in the spot where the bull hung up.
    Anyway, super pumped that you got that 5x6. That is a beast for sure!!!
    Not trying to be a know-it-all by any means. I just learned this lesson the hard way for about 6 years. Then I got that piece of advice from Cory Jacobson the master!!

    Nice hunt, good patience on the calling when he was coming in, easy to overcall and have them peg you...would like to hear a big hunt guys debate on fixed vs mechanical BH for elk....I Judy can't bring myself to trust a mechanical. Great film as always trail

    • @trailkreitzer9163
      @trailkreitzer9163 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, thanks for watching and for the kind words and feedback. I lost a spike elk in 03 shooting a mechanical and I went to fixed blades exclusively up until a few years ago when I started using the SEVR heads. This is just my experience so take that with a grain of salt, I've killed a number of elk and been on hunts with folks that have killed elk with fixed blades and although there is typically enough blood to follow...I've not had what I would consider great blood trails with fixed blades. More often than not, the elk has not gone far and died quickly but the difference in blood trails between a fixed blade and the mechanicals I've been using is notable. The mechanical has produced much better blood trails. I also have not seen what I would suggest is a significant difference in penetration. I've had more than enough penetration with the mechanical, the blood trail has been better, they can be easier to tune and are quieter in flight and I'm pretty convinced that the right mechanical is a better option for me.

      Hey Trail, I wanted to ask you if you have heard of the elk nut, Paul Medel. He has hunted elk successfully on OTC units in Idaho for so many years, and has spent countless days and weeks and months figuring out the elk language . He came out with an app a few years ago and it is outstanding. It is called the elk nut app. I would highly recommend it, as you will definitely learn something even with all your experience. The one thing I would utilize would be what he calls the nervous grunt . It will stop an elk in their tracks, and it made me think of it when that bull turned to leave and you gave it a soft cow call. Good luck this year, God bless @trailkreitzer9163
