Sorry, Karen, gutters flying off in a hurricane is “an act of God” and isn’t covered on any sane person’s insurance.
EDIT: Karen’s repeated harassment should have justified more visits from the police. Waiting until OP was alone constitutes stalking. And finally, since Florida is a Stand Your Ground state, OP would have had cause to greet Karen with a loaded shotgun.

There are a couple restaurants near where I live that have a public unsecured wifi and a secondary secured wifi that they change the password once a month and the only way to get the password is to order food.
Both places are fairly expensive so rarely do people go to those places more than once a month.

Story one. I can relate to this, as Welsh is my first language, but I’ve spent most of my life in England. When ever I was travelling back home to Wales, on the trains I would be reading the local newspaper from the town I lived in England. I had a gang of Welsh speakers join the train, they then started to talk about me in Welsh. Not thinking that I understood every word of their conversation about me. When the train was approaching the station that I had to get off, they had put one of their suitcases by the seats that I was sitting in. So by doing this it was blocking me in, so I turned round to them and spoke to them in Welsh. Telling them to move it so I could get off. Their faces were a picture

When it did, it pulled up her carport's cement sinker (think something the size of an ocean buoy) out of the ground, tossed it over our shared fence, hit our hurricane awning, & pulled the awning 3/4 of the way out of our concrete wall. Thankfully I spoke good enough Italian that the tourist did not realize that I was an American. The US is not the only country to produce its share of the 'ugly', but unfortunately - maybe because of its population size - it tends to produce more than its share. one of the major issues that we are talking about tourists vice travellers. There is a major difference between the two as the latter have endeavoured to learn about the country and its people and language etc while the former are doing ten countries in three days and never appreciate what they are seeing and experiencing. Some years ago, I was aboard a cruise ship in the Med. We arrived in Genoa where there were three ways to get into the town proper. By chartered boats which showed you the waterfront, by bus/taxi or even walk. We received a copy of the boat timetable, and I sallied forth to board and go to town. The due time arrived; no boat. No issue. After about 15 minutes, a group of Americans arrived for the next boat; no show on time. After about 10 minutes a couple of the men started to complain loudly about incompetence, negligence, why are we waiting, the cruise line should be sued etc, etc, etc. I had enough and snaped, "Lighten up, I've been waiting longer than you. Welcome to the Med and Mediterranean time. This is NOT the Staten Island ferry, this is Italy. Sure the boat isnt here now but it will be soon. So just enjoy the sun or else go get a cab." A few minutes later it arrived and ran fautlessly for the rest of the day. Re the restaurant. Sounds fabulous. And the sort of place I always seek out. ON that same trip, I went ashore in Barcelona and passed all the los touristas places on the avenue. A few streets away I found a restaurant with some Spaniards inside and the owner. He gave me a table and said "You are off one of the cruise ships?" I replied yes but not real keen on mingling with tourists. I had a superb lunch, he joined me for a beer or three and we had a darned good time. I have other stories like that. THAT is what travel vice tourism is about.

The moment she said she would sue OP should have immediately stated "Since you have threatened litigation you must now speak only through my attorney. No direct contact."
OP definitely needs to have an attorney sent a Cease & Desist letter. If that does not stop the harassment then OP needs a No Contact / Restraining Order issued.

Story 3 reminded me of a nice gesture I got years ago. My parents and I had a holiday to Malta (lovely place) when I was about 9 years old. I was raised to be polite and respectful (this is important). We also preferred to eat at more down to earth local restaurants rather than touristy places (better to give business to locals).
One was a lovely little restaurant, where the owner was also chef/waiter - it was quite small but with a welcoming vibe (there was a couple of tables with locals eating). The owner would regularly check to see if we were satisfied with our meal (we had swordfish to eat - so delicious). Saw the guy had a cute pet monkey through the window to the back garden (even saw the owner give the monkey it's own lunch). After the meal the restaurant owner came over to the table and told me that I was 'the best behaved child to have eaten at his restaurant' and gave me a nice little badge (which I would regularly wear for many years since).
Now I'm older, I realize that he must have had tourists visit who must have brought bratty children (presumably running around screaming) - so I feel glad that I and my parents gave him good custom that day with no stress.

Oh yeah that’s an old trick, I bet he had badges made up in bulk to give to kids who were being good.

    • @BMakabre
      @BMakabre ปีที่แล้ว

@@DC-bp8sx The badge was a fairly unique type (not the plastic badges - it was metal). You are probably right that the guy had similar little 'gifts of thanks' to other respectable kids. It was really nice for me as a child back then to get a little appreciation for being polite (my parents let me tell our order - which was a good way of being included in the experience).
I have worked in service jobs that exposed me to the 'bad apple families' as customers - so I know how demoralizing it is when you have to 'just smile' from rude entitled families (even tourists). I have had good families as customers and they have given me a positive boost whenever I have served them.

Specifically, I remember coming back to my hotel and having to walk by the elevators (lifts in the local parlance) and one of the hotel staff was instructing a family on how to operate the elevator with their key card. I politely waited as the staff member continued, but then he took notice of me and said that I could pass through the crowd. I said that I wouldn't dream of that and that I could wait until he finished. As I recall, the family went up in the elevator, and the staff member said to me that it wouldn't have been a bother if I had simply pushed through the crowd. I replied that I was a guest in his country, and as such, I should be as polite as possible.

thats not true? if you break something in a grocery store on accident you don't have to pay it, the store should have insurance. And if you break something, after paying but not leaving the till yet, they might even replace it. At least thats how it is for my country.

      @tinydancer7426 ปีที่แล้ว +5

A replacement, maybe. But a free one, NAH! What would have been funny is if, after her husband got back into the car, he told her that he gave his phone number to the cashier and manager and told them to call him the next time (if there ever was a next time) she was in the store and started acting up, for them to call him. 😄

@@roni9192 That's how it works here too ..... unless the breakage (before purchase) is a malicious act. But then, of course, the police and the courts would be involved after the fact.

She definitely has no grounds to get the items for free. But I agree with the other responses, in that the items falling is no big deal unless they're damaged/compromised. Even then, the reasonable expectation is for the store to replace it with a like item.
In personal experience, I have brought things to the cashier which were already broken, even though I had no intent of buying them, just to report the items and have them pulled from stock. They thanked me, and I wasn't held liable for the items.
I've also purchased items which broke before I left - or was discovered to be already broken. The stores (this happened a few times) invariably allowed me to get another of the same.
But maybe that's just because I'm not an entitled bitch.

Japan's judicial system is a bit of an anachronism.
The premise "innocent until proven guilty" is a fairly new idea, only gaining traction in the Enlightenment. However, the heavy pro-individual lean of many Enlightenment values don't line up all that well with the traditionally pro-collective Japan. It's led to a very unique intersection of values, particularly in the (relatively) newly American influenced world.

Started out really nice. And right before I finished, and they were about to pay, the guy tells me he didn't have any cash but he was going to trade me some crack rock for the meal.
The total was less than $20.
I tell him I can't do that, and that I don't smoke crack.
He tells me he will give me weed and crack.
Still tell him no, can't do that.
Then his girlfriend starts in yelling at him to "fvck me up" and he starts telling me that he is going to stab me.
Over me not wanting to trade food for drugs 😂
The guy actually stepped behind the counter to shove me down and when I hit the ground my coworker ran out and the couple took off.
    They forgot the food.
    And they forgot a backpack!
So we handed it over to the police, there were drugs in it but I'm not sure what was all in there, and I don't care.

I used to work retail. Any time somebody would whip out the "Do you know who I am?!" line, I'd immediately start going through stroke checklist. Memory loss is a sign of a potential stroke, after all. Admittedly, I do it to be factious, knowing they're just being Karens. But you never know.
For those curious, the stroke checklist is "FAST".
1: Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of their face droop?
2: Arms: Ask them to raise their arms above their head. Does one of them drift down?
3: Speech: Ask them to say a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred?
4: Time: If the answer to any of these is yes, call your emergency services.
As for the last story: Security cameras, or at the very least, audio recordings of her threats. Get a handful of them, then go to the authorities for harassment.

He was rifling through the racks of shirts and hiding behind them and other fun stuff kids do. He caused some shirts to fall to the floor, then, knocked some stacks of jeans over. I walked close to him, when he was away from her, and told him to "go tell your mother she wants you". I had heard the line before on a comedy show or cartoon or something. My 18 year old self thought it was cool.

When I tried to talk he kept interrupting me so I yelled in Chinese “SHUT UP I’M TALKING.” That got the dad to shut up and freeze. Let just say the whole family was really embarrassed.
A few years ago family is at a restaurant when a tree falls on our car. We did tell the manager that we were going to report this to our insurance. Manager gave us his business card and we told him who our insurance was. We dealt with the whole thing like professionals. Our insurance deemed that the tree had fallen due to a rainstorm and that the damage was an AOG, act of god. Insurance still covered the damage but restaurant was not contacted or billed. We still frequent that restaurant.

For the home claim, any dent or scrape to the enclosure around the outside HVAC unit, if that's the only damage the adjuster would laugh it off and not process the claim. If there's more extensive damage, she should be filing a claim not bothering her neighbor.

OP should definitely sue her for the harassment and false accusations. How is it even her fault that she took damage some minor damage during a storm. From what I can tell OP took more damage than her neighbour, that Karen should be lucky that the damage she took was minor. Heck our whole yard was wrecked and our power lines were ripped down, and we were out for 17 days. Most of the stuff we lost were just branches and some shingles and my window screen.
People lost their homes during that storm, especially along the north shore of Prince Edward Island, which was completely demolished and is completely closed off now.
I didn’t hear anybody blaming others over the damage. Yet this Karen is crying over a small dent on her car which she claimed to cause thousands of dollars to replace? Lady, I saw a car’s roof caved in by a fallen tree. Imagine the insurance cost to have that replaced?

Had the woman in the last story just acted calmly and said something like I think your gutter hit my car and caused a dent, then I think it would have been likely that the insurance company would have just paid the 300-400 to fix the dent. Because I think all the work to refute that claim might have cost more.

A hurricane is an act of god. OP’s insurance doesn’t pay, the crazy neighbors does. I’d get her arrested for harrassment by calling the police each and everytime she comes over. Tell the cop I want her told she cannot come onto my property and if she does again it’s trespassing. My stepson, after threatening to murder me, got told that and he’s never harassed me again because of the threat of jail.

Insurance Karen wants a new car, and I'm betting the heat pump is about due to be replaced. She wants money directly from OP because she knows insurance isn't going to cover any of this, she just wants someone else to pay for her new items!

Story 4 Would be considered an act of God making OP not liable for the damages. Even if the gutter came off her house, Karen would have to deal with her own insurance company to get this fixed.

Story 1: My husband's father was born in Lebanon. His Mom is of English and German decent. My husband takes after his Mom, he is light skinned, very light skinned and has red/ blonde/ brown hair. We were in a store in a predominantly Arabic town. The other customers were speaking in Arabic and my husband asked in English where a certain food item was (yes he asked an actual employee) and the item is a Lebanese delicacy and the employee answered him and the several customers standing around made a comment in Arabic that we probably don't know how to make it or wouldn't eat it. My husband responded in Arabic that we make it and eat it all the time it was just the first time in that particular store. They stood there with their mouths hung open. It was hysterical! You never know who can understand what you say, so as my parents taught me and Thumper told Bambi, if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all!

All retail fast food and waiters/ waitresses should get one free pass to curse out a customer a day.

In story 4 Karen should have been reported for threatening her daughter by saying she was not going to be nice to her daughter if the mother did not go along with her extortion attempt!!

The closest I ever came to being the ugly American is when I asked for cheese on my spaghetti at an Italian restaurant in Oxford England. The waiter looked disgusted and gave me a teaspoon of cheese LOL!
