    NOTE: AFTER LOOSENING THE YELLOW DRAIN VALVE, IMMEDIATELY BEGIN TO LOOSEN AND REMOVE THE CANISTER. A POPPET VALVE WILL STOP THE FUEL FLOW WHEN REMOVED. IT WILL JUST KEEP DRAINING IF YOU LEAVE VALVE OPEN AND DON'T REMOVE CANISTER. Forgot to mention this in the video.

    On the lower fuel bowl there is a little tab at the very top that meets up with a little tab on the housing itself. When you tighten it, these will touch, and that is the stopping point. As mentioned in the video, if you crank on it, this tab will break off and damage the filter housing. Apparently the previous owner of my truck had done just that as I watched this video to find out how to remove the bowl and after getting it off, found the housing broken at that point. Thankfully the damage is just that little area and it still seals. Get a light up there and watch as you tighten it and that will prevent an Oh Shit moment. This video was quite helpful on the lower filter. Appreciate it.
    I read a few who had air issues. What I did was replace the top one first, then ran the truck a bit to purge it, then did the lower one. I turned the ignition on and waited until the fuel pump changed pitch before starting. No issues with it starting.

      Yes changing one at a time then running it definitely helps. I've had a few times I've been in a hurry and did them both and she wanted to crank for a few seconds before firing. Same goes for semi trucks too we always do one at a time or else you have an oh shit moment haha

    Good video, thank you. PLEASE ADD A CAUTION TO THE VIDEO, the line with the yellow quick disconnect also has a fuel return line attached to it. This line is VERY fragile. It can break easily as mine did. If you break it and go to replace it please know that the yellow quick disconnect works as follows: the rectangular looking part needs to be pulled up, THEN the thumbnail looking part needs to be pushed DOWN, then it comes apart. Mine is a 2011. ps I bought 1 from my local Ford dealer $30.45, buying a backup gen Ford online for less than $20. delivered.

    I started the process of changing the bottom filter as shown but the fuel just wouldn’t stop flowing!! Does unscrewing the canister break the vacuum and stop the fuel flow? It was quite clear to me I was well on my way to draining the fuel tank if I continued and I had a near full tank. Does the fuel tank need to be at or near empty before changing the bottom filter? I had accumulated about five gallons of fuel before I discontinued the filter change, opting for an attempt at a later date when the tank was closer to empty. Your reply gets a subscription and a thumbs up!!

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You and a few other people have had this problem. Unfortunately I wasn't clear enough in the video that you only let it drain for a few seconds and then you remove the housing. When the housing is removed, a little poppet valve will stop the flow of fuel. If you check the description I updated it quite some time ago. Unfortunately I can't go back and edit the video. I wish there was a way to without deleting it. Glad you caught this and didn't drain your whole tank out! LOL. And you also never want to change the fuel filters when you're low on fuel. Not a good idea because you could run her dry.

    • @RoadKing05FLHR
      @RoadKing05FLHR ปีที่แล้ว

      If the filter stays up on the truck it will keep flowing. Unscrew the housing and pull the filter off and it will stop.

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem. Just make sure to read my note in the description. As soon as you crack the petcock lose start loosening the housing. Otherwise it will just keep draining fuel from the tank

  • @kevino452
    @kevino452 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What does it mean if my fuel never stops leaking out the bottom filter? After removing the bottom housing and filter. It is still leaking out.

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Loosen the housing immediately once you crack the petcock loose. There is a spring loaded shut off valve that will stop the flow. Otherwise you're going to drain your tank. I updated the description a long while back but unfortunately I wasn't very clear in the video about this. If you look in the comments many other people have had the same problem so you're certainly not alone

    I have had my 2013 F-450 platinum serviced at the dealership since it was new. Once I hit 100K I started doing it myself but I have not changed the fuel filters yet as I didn't think it was that easy thinking about purging the fuel system.. You rock man for this great video. One question is when you pull the bottom filter how do you not loose fuel from the tank?

    I had the same issue as others, followed instructions to a T, got low fuel pressure warning and it was hard to start up. Also fuel pump when you turn the key on but not crank it was making unusual sounds. I tightened the bottom filter as hard as I could by hand but I figured I'd give the wrench a try, sure enough I got another turn out of it. So unless you're super strong or have a brand new truck, you might need to use the wrench for the last turn or so to prevent air from getting in. After doing this and doing the key thing 6 times again, I heard a much more normal sounding fuel pump and could hear the air leaving the system. Started right up fine after that. Hope this helps others, and thanks for the video! Saved me a lot of money! (Also fuel filters are cheap on Amazon, $30 less than my local O'Reilly!)

    I purged 6 times as instructed but it is still having trouble starting. I test drove it. It seemed fine. But trying to start it 30 minutes later, it was difficult again. I'll keep an eye on it and see if it gets better.

      @@NoNonsenseKnowHow I am a pretty strong guy and I was very careful to not overtighten the lower canister. It was lined up and seemed like it was getting tight (getting jerky since working against the gasket). I tried to get to to move again by hand with no luck. I was NOT going to break it by overdoing it. When I was still having starting problems because of an obvious lack of fuel, I looked at a Ford forum and saw where a common problem is not bottoming out the canister and it can still suck air slowly. Put a 1 1/4 wrench on it and damn if I didn't get another turn before it obviously stopped. It's been half an hour and it still starts right up.

  • @paularthur8055
    @paularthur8055 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks! I'd changed my filters before but I needed a quick refresher. The note about loosening the filter housing as soon as you open the yellow drain valve was particularly helpful. When I completed the air purge process the engine wouldn't start but then I remembered from the first time I changed my filters that the same thing happened and corrected the problem by tightening the filter housing one more turn. After that everything worked just fine.

    You have to remove a metal guard first before the lower filter housing can be unscrewed. It takes a 10 mm wrench and one bolt, then it swings up pit of the way.

    YEP BIG TU QUICK TO THE POINT i did want to see you pull those hoses off, u cut it right at the point where I start feeling I'm gonna tear 1, they look really snug also I'd like to know if you can tell with these filters if old or not needing a change, I have a used 1 f450 & the dealers always say 60 120 ext point inspection but other then oil being done really all they do is top tings off, it's 2 expensive 2 change out trans, power, ext.. I did the transfer cases, trans looked really clean, power steering just not certain it looks clean, I wonder if I examine the paper closely in these ff can I tell? The bowel for sure looked pretty dirty so I would go by that, it's 2 bad they dont have a color mark or some kind of gauge on the housing of that filter.

    Great Video. My problem wasn't over tightening the fuel filter housing, my problem was the previous person who I bouight the truck from over tighten the housing. When I went to loosen the housing it just broke right at the 32MM nut. Diesel fuel all over. Good thing I was able to order a replacement housing on Amazon that said it should be here today, I sure hope it is. I'm going to make sure I don't overtighten. Also I couldn't find the link to order filters from.

    What does it sound like under the hood when priming? I did the cp4 mod and now I can't get it started I keep priming finally got it to start for about 30 seconds yesterday but it feels like it's sucking air possibly. But then again I'm not sure if it's just purging the air

    My filter is up front in the bonnet away from rocks, stones and debris that is tossed up by the wheels. Especially a very bad place for a real 4wd to have a filter. I hope this car stays on the bitumen. Certainly need heavy protection if it goes bush.
    Apart from, that a good quick way to change the filter.

    LIfe saving time saving video. God Bless you! Question please, if you can read this:
    Have you ever heard of a Ford super duty truck making a buzzing, not clicking, but more like a continuous chopping or grinding, almost like a wood chipper. Yeah, wish I was kidding. 190k on an 2015 F450 with a dump body, 6.7 diesel. Truck starts cold and sounds purrrfect. Smooth. Within about a minute or two, this racket starts. It's not the engine itself, I don't believe but it does change tone when put in gear and neutral, but not much. Noise seems to diminish when going down the road. Also sounds like a loose nut or grille, plate or bracket with a vibration that is just plain loud outside underneath. Seems to source from driver's side. I know, this is alot to ask in words, not able to hear it, see it, touch it. Any help appreciated, will be happy to help you too.

    Really nice nice video! Concise and too the point.
    The only thing id recommend is snapping the filter into the lower housing (bowl) instead of the rail mounted pump (0:55).
    The filter can get caught on the clips in the bowl when you screw it on and instead of snapping into place can break the retention clips and possibly crack the pump housing.
    Ask me how I know lol

    22,000 is not the right interval…
    Every 10,000 miles
    Or even 5000 miles… most people do them every other oil change or every oil change… this is pretty important stuff if you have a CP4 injection pump

  • @grantparnes
    @grantparnes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Should read as the first line. WARNING. Don't do if your tank is full. I just drained about 2 gallons of diesel out of the yellow petcock and can only guess that the level in the tank is still filling the filter. Stopped the process for another day. Still running strong when I shut the yellow valve and put my tools away.

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you refer to the description of the video, I forgot to mention that as soon as you cracked a petcock loose you start loosening the whole housing. Once the housing drops down a poppet valve seals off the flow from your tank. If you read down to the comments, plenty of other people have had the same problem so you're certainly not alone. Wish I could go back and add to the video without deleting it completely

    So these filters have to be changed every 22k miles or does this depend on use? Let's say the truck gets maybe 10k miles a year or less 😰 would I still change it at 22k miles or sooner? Thanks!

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what the recommendations are for yearly intervals. I would think if you do it every year or two years worst-case, you should be okay

    Another tip is to make sure your fuel tank is on the full side. I've done this with a quarter tank of fuel and she cranked for a while after 6 cycles but started fine. Also I usually snap the filter into the bottom housing instead of the top like you did. Does it matter?

    • @BLACKMONGOOSE13

      Hasnt for me. I always snap into the bottom housing too and yes more than a 1/4 tank does matter. Could not prime till 1/2. 😮

    Kasey I am not a mechanic. I got a light on my 2019 F-350 for water in fuel whatever. I drained the separator on the fuel tank and can’t find the other one at the front so I’m thinking this year+ doesn’t have it. The diesel came out clean but the light won’t go away. Is it because I forgot to cycle 3 times before running it? What do I do now?
