The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

It's astonishing how much work and craft went into these three-minute symphonies. It's also amazing how the Big Name Artists had no problem turning out three or more albums a year - then going on tour, giving live performances night after night, month after month. It's as if being a recording star was, you know: a job!
Today, a popstar needs five years to make an album - and giving six concerts is considered a tour!

AMAZINGLY Petula did not have anytime what so ever to rehearse this for the Ed Sullivan Show.
It had taken her forty five minutes from getting off the airplane and getting into a car to take her directly to the studio.
She then went on the show and sang "I Know A Place" TOTALLY live as if she had been there all day.
With no time for any rehearsals I imagine that is why the band were slightly out of step with Petula's unmatchable vocals.
Petula Clark gave a masterclass in how to deliver a BRILLIANT and AWESOME song (Thanks once again to musical genius Tony Hatch) like no other artist could.

For all the comments about Petula arriving just in time for the show's airing. That is incorrect. The Ed Sullivan aired live at 8 PM on Sunday evenings. The show had a full dress rehearsal with an audience at 1 PM on Sunday afternoons. The production team has to do timings, lighting etc. and they also charted the audience reaction to the performer. Petula barely arrived from France in time for the formal rehearsal. Evidently, when her song started, the tempo was wrong and she stopped her song. That was never done at rehearsal. But Ed Sullivan loved her and she appeared often.

It's also amazing how the Big Name Artists of the era had no problem turning out three or more albums a year - then going on tour, giving live performances night after night, month after month. It's as if being a recording star was, you know: a job!
Today, a popstar needs five years to make an album - and giving six concerts is considered a tour!

I have no idea why, but this song just popped in my head yesterday and I had to jump on YT and listen to it. Great stuff by Petula Clark.

She had so many great hits, but even more importantly she loves and appreciates her fans. One of the greatest artists when it comes to returning the love the fans give her

I have read many stories of just how INCREDIBLELY generous Petula is to her fans.
She as a heart of SOLID GOLD as big as her PHENOMENAL voice.
She is A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y- BRILLIANT and such a warm and sincere person.
She as made my life all the more wonderful because of her OUTSTANDING MUSIC.
She is INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL both on the inside and outside in equal measure.
      THE ULTIMATE MEGA-STAR.

She’s talking about “the Cavern” in Liverpool. A man greets her. She goes downstairs to some tables and chairs. The beat is the greatest there! Oh yes it was!

You'll notice that the tempo of the song is a little too fast, but when Petula starts singing, the tempo eventually slows down to what basically was on the record of the song.

That was a very pro move, the way she pulled the band into the pocket with her singing without batting an eye.

Well spotted and part of her American debut too

She was such a professional, that if the band hadn't slowed down, she would have adjusted to them. Nowadays, many performers would probably throw a hissy fit and walk off-stage.

Ed had a full timed rehearsal with an audience at 1 PM on Sundays. Apparently Petula had flown in from Paris and just barely made the rehearsal. Same thing happened with the orchestra and Petula stopped the song... unheard of then. For the Live show, she let the orchestra reset itself.

@@mthivier Nowadays the band performs to a click track or an electronic beat, even with a live drummer so they have to follow the beat. Im not sure if so could have sung any faster.

The first time I heard this was on WEAM AM Radio, Northern Virginia, blasting thru my '61 Falcon's radio. But it wasn't until I saw this performance live , as a 15 year old on this very show, that it really struck me. Lyrics, Melody, Arrangement, Killer Chorus. Powerful vocals right on the money. Truly a song of it's time. Bravo~!

Yes! I lived in Alexandria, VA. in the mid to late 1960’s. Heard it either on WPGC or WEAM. Good times!

Her "Downtown" album was the very first album I ever bought & "I Know a Place" was the very first piece of piano sheet music I ever bought. Thank goodness I have her music on CDs now. Still love listening to her and we finally got to see her in concert in 2007!
