well it basically comes down to flashy novelty ties. or things that offer close to 0 contrast with your outfit, I also don't like ties that are not the right width where it's either ultra skinny or just way to fat with fat knots...
I govern my neckties with a rule of 3 for formal wear - 3 colours if it can be contained. For swimlanes and Ginghams, a solid tie - not too busy looking over the shirt patterns. Then for solid plain colour shirts, business stripes tie with the base colour brown, and other colour to match the shirt, as close as possible. Plain solid coloured shirts allow play for patterns, and that brings in motif ties, again with colours matching the shirt colour as close as possible. Not entirely no brainer approach, but without putting in some thought, its a challenge dressing to the rule of 3, and yet appear effective.
I love the fact that you concentrate majorly on formal wear because you are a formal person. I've seen a bunch of your videos and I love them, but I really feel that you can drift your focus to something less formal and not really suit related but are rather T-shirt related or light clothing. Anyway love your videos and i really wish to see more and more of them.
The Dark Knot folds their ties into fourths and then into the box. There are major fold lines with they way they package their ties. These folds don't necessarily relax out of the fabric. It may take some steam or a trip to the dry cleaner to undo this.
I really enjoy old 90s Versace ties. They work well with any occasion, lots of extravagant artwork, but they also have really nice subtle and neutral colors
I tend to go solid colours for the most part, I don't have too many occasions where I need to wear a suit (and these days can go more casual without a tie at all), so keeping it simple is very effective
I would pick slate blue, burgundy, sand and black as the essential ones. Ideally solid color or conservative pattern. It goes with pretty much every suit and every shirt and covers a wide range of real-life situations.
Antonio, I am a bit bias to the blue, but am going to have to say that the better looking of the 2 was actually the brown. Fantastic contrast with the blue shirt and darker jacket. Definitely going to have to see how that would blend with my blue pinstripe vest.
I like the brown tie significantly more. It contrasts more with your clothing and adds variety to the ensemble, which a blue jacket and blue shirt need.

I haven't seen much in the way of business dress with them though so I would expect them to be a very casual choice for younger men?
I honestly prefer bolder, colorful neckties. The rest of a typical man's suit is very conservative already, so I feel like the tie is the one thing that you can get away with adding a little extra personality to. Also, knitted ties would personally fall under my "avoid" category.
great advice here thank you, my taste in ties not good, and people always comment.....I'm a sales man what would be the best neck tie to wear whilst selling?
Have a upcoming wedding. My wife is wearing a wine color Dress, I am wearing a black Suit with a white shirt and wine color tie. Is this what you would advise?
Excellent video, and I am trying to follow your guidance; quality, silk, etc. However, it seems every tie I have ever bought has always come in varying lengths of too long. I am over 6'3", but I wear a Pratt knot. Is the problem too simple of a knot? Wrong ties? Is there a better solution than awkwardly stuffing the extra tail into my dress shirt?
Antonio: Can you speak about Dandy neckties? There is one style of necktie that I can't think of the name of where the tail of the tie is of a different pattern than the blade. It is a old time fashion. They seem popular with well dressed hispanic men. I know they are not 7 fold ties because I own several of those. Can you tell me what these ties are called and if I should avoid them?
the brown tie can be darker, ig. feel light it should go light shirt, medium suit, darker tie. maybe thats just me. all blue with brown is alot of color to me idk 😅 like a 2/3rds rule: 2 items on the top can have color, with differing shades. the remaining item should be neutral ish not dogging color, ever since ive been sorta called out for using a bit much i kinda converted to conservative 😂

Ties are alright really. Both my dad and i would wear them at home too. I said to him i like that top button shirt done up with one on. I know many men dont these days but he felt it was great that i did and i felt it was manly too why not.
I just can’t bring myself to wear the knitted tie with the square bottom lol I tend to acquaint those with sad and boring little academics teaching at a community college nobody’s ever heard of somewhere lol
Summary. How to identify a quality Tie * Use 100% Silk * The tie should lie flat and not curve when hung * The part that goes over the back neck must be reinforced. It makes the tie last longer * Bar tack. A thread that reinforces the theme. * Slip stitch. When you pull on it, the tie scrunches up. But you can pull the tie and restore its shape.
Of course. It is a simple yet timeless combination. I would recommend going with a solid white dress shirt. It will provide a perfect contrast between the Navy tie and suit.
Quite the good guide. But I think you forgot to discourage bright and shiny ties :P There are soo many people wearing them. They all end up looking like a clown :D
Silk ties are classy when quite new but they dissapoint and lose their shape after a few wears.. and they can't be cleaned properly.. Dry cleaning still distorts the silk fabric.. and ties now ( since the early nineties [exponentially] or late eighties) have a ridiculous amount of unnecessary bulky interlining. I unpick my ties to remove the thick felt inside. I wear a shirt and tie every day. Seven days a week.
I wear a stiff collar and tie every day 7 days a week with simple tidy casual items and sometimes suits or pants and jacket. I am constantly challenged by people why I'm wearing a tie. I don't see many men wearing ties now. Despite me enjoying my collars and ties I get fed up of attitudes and think I should stop.
I liked the blue tie better individually, but it made your outfit very monochrome, and I personally wasn't a fan of the level of contrast with the brown tie.
