If you want to know how to match your dress shoes to your suit (or dress pants) every time, you’re in the right place. In this video, I’ll tell you which color shoes work best with the most popular suit colors, including navy, grey and black. I’ll also reveal the one shoe color that you should probably avoid, even though it’s very common, (hint: I’m not talking about black).

🧍🏻My Sizes
I'm 5'6" with shoes on and about 125 lbs after dinner. I have a 35" chest; I usually wear XS tops and 28x28 pants (or 28x30 cuffed).
My best suit jacket size is 34 Short, but even 34S needs alterations (mostly shortening of the sleeves and jacket), so my best-fitting suits are custom.

What's your go to shoe + suit (or dress pant) combo?
I only have 2 pair of dress shoes. A pair of black oxfords and dark brown double monk straps which I pair with black , charcoal and navy pants & suits …
I think the most common combo is the black ( or blue) suit with the black shoes
Oxblood and dark brown shoes are by far the most versatile. I think there's a difference between a polished shoe and suede as well. My black suede looks far far blacker than a polished black shoe, especially in photos. Tan shoes are good for light coloured suits and chinos.
I'm sure my age (70) has rendered me "not trending", but I'm not about to change now. I agree on your color matches, but I absolutely despise those trouser lengths which leave you and your models looking like they're waiting for high-tide to roll in. Give me a proper break in the cuff any day, and one day "classic" will be trending once more! Thanks for the interesting thoughts and tips though! 👍
I’m 37, and I believe classic will always be in style-regardless of the current fad. I wear a more slim pant, but want one break with my fitted look. I don’t think exposing ankles/sockless look is completely unattractive, I’m just not sold that it is my look.
I'm 22, and pleated pants with a proper break is what I invest in. My mother laughs at me if my pants are too short.
Your age has zero to do with class and style. A slight to medium break is always the best , anything less is a capris and those look best on women
@@spaghettiking7312you still let your mom opine on your clothes at 22?
@@maxalaintwo3578 She can state whatever opinion she wants. I agree with her opinion in this case.
Very informative with good edits 👏 thank you for the video
Hey Brock, its been a while. This is very helpful in mix-matching a daily ensemble. Thanks for the tips. Dropping some comment to show some love and support.
Great comprehensive info you are sharing my guy
Thanks sir. Very good work.
Great job!
Great content thank you
Great video! Black shoes with light blue suit makes it look like the black pair is the only pair of dress shows you own. I agree on a dark brown/black two shoe as minimum and light brown only if you have a number of light color summer style outfits.
wow that's a huge illogical leap
Very good video. My first pair of dress shoes I bought after deciding to get into men's style, was a pair of light tan brogues. Light tan dress shoes seemed to be all the rage on the TH-cam style channels in 2018. They sit on my shelf now year around and barely ever get worn. These light tan brogues only seem to work with light tan pants, light blue jeans, light grey or light green jeans, and not much else. It also helps to repeat the light tan color in the belt and watch strap. But yeah, light tan shoes are not that versatile. Thank you Brock for confirming what I thought.
The light brown shoes is for my jeans collection.
Hey Brock great content as usual. Can you tell me what's the difference between Burgundy and OxBlood color?
Watching this wearing tan shoes with a blue suit 😢 haha. Great video
I really like this guy.
Nice video buddy. I really need to know where I can get those light tan Oxford shoes from?
Tan is also my least favorite now. I use to wear tan brogues to office and parties but burgundy/oxblood took over for last few years 😅
Charcoal is my go-to suit. I'm young, so it makes me look a little more mature.
Good call!
Shoes should match the belt, as well. Thanks for sharing!
Hello i bought Plum colour suit to attand wedding reception please advise which colour shoe can go with that. thank you
Glad to see you back, Sir! Hi from Indonesia
5:00 Thank you so much, this video help me a lot.
Hello, Can I wear a light blue suit like the one with the tan shoes, but with dark brown shoes?!
Thank you
Best video 🎉
Hi!! I bought navy shoes and i would like to know about that pant should i match... Greeting from Argentina
Very educational!
your video has inspired me thanks
What is the best colour shoes to wear with full white suits...
Can we have white sneakers with a navy blue suit?
What should your socks watch with
I like medium tan/conac shoes with medium blue. Yeah it's fashion forward rather than traditional, but it does stand out. In fairness, I'd NEVER wear tennis shoes with a suit.
Is there anything that does not go with oxblood ? :)
Hey Brock! So for Charcoal Grey lightweight Wool slacks should I invest in Medium or Dark Brown Wingtip oxfords? My Sanborn Tan Captoe Oxfords tend to go well with my heather Grey Wool trousers since they're both lighter shades. Thanks for the content! I'm 5ft11 so not necessarily your target audience but I still learn a lot so it's very helpful in general.
If the slacks are charcoal, go for dark brown shoes. Brock makes the same recommendation at 2:55. Medium browns *can* work, too, but are harder to pull off. So if you don't want to overthink it, go for dark brown.
@@aPixelcoffee I appreciate it thank you. How about Cognac? It's a Reddish Brown shade rather than a complete Brown. My Cognac loafers look fine with them though. I'll definitely consider Dark Brown though for future reference. Once in awhile I'll break some style rules but it can get really tough with slacks.
@@Manuel421 Well, cognac really shines most when paired with lighter colors like itself. Think light grey flannel oder a summery shade of bright blue tropical wool. Olive or khaki chinos will also look great with it.
But hell, those are just rules. You're absolutely right in breaking them. Dark blue jeans clash so gracefully with cognac shoes, for example. Or navy chinos, that contrast just makes any outfit pop. Just remember to keep the rest subtle, then. Especially when you're experimenting with bold styles. It's like Coco Chanel once said: Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.
@@aPixelcoffee Absolutely! Thanks again. Charcoal still looks just as fine with them as well. Being in my 30's it's nice to continue learning more about upgrading your wardrobe.
@@Manuel421 It's great! Have fun on your journey mate👌🏻
Whats about the belt color?
I can’t find that color wingtips shoe anywhere 😢
He's back!
Ive grown off black shoe's whatever the colour of the suit
What is right mid brown color, as there is different shades of brown it's really confusing..?
There’s no official definition, but in general, darker browns work better than mid/light.
Should shoes match the tie? Example: black suit and shirt with a burgundy tie. Black shoes or burgundy shoes?
Not really. You have much more flexibility with your tie colors!
Do the same guidelines apply when wearing loafers? I find suede loafers idea for summer, specially when traveling.
also what color suit would you buy after a tan suit and charchoal grey light lue window pain suit in case your wondering i moslty get my suits from thirft stores or vintage shops.
I'd probably go with a staple color like navy!
I’ve had a pair of burgundy Cole Haan Oxfords for a decade and they have been great. I wear them with charcoal and grey and it’s a sharp combination, nice to know I could add a navy suit and still wear them. Burgundy belts aren’t as common so that’s one downside.
Burgundy or oxblood belts are definitely harder to find. I have two, but one is a light brown belt that I took to a shoe hospital (and had them dye it burgundy).
So, no love for walnut ae strand?
I like it, but I wouldn’t call it a versatile shoe.
I just got a pair of the walnut Strand but resisted the hype for *years.* I plan to buy a pair of light grey trousers to wear the Strand with LOL. A lot of influencers and images out there showing men wearing navy trousers or dark wash jeans with the walnut Strand but that is NOT a good look. Like Vladimir Riché says: “it looks like two flashlights pointing at your feet.” 😂😂😂
Another video with solid, actionable advice. If you can only buy one, are burgundy or oxblood shoes more versatile and what is the best pant color match (after navy) for each of these?
Thanks! I’d probably go with black if I could only buy one. Unless you never wear black/charcoal suits. In that case, burgundy would make more sense.
Style is objective. We are currently leaving in a society where anything goes when it comes to dress style. I’m 57 and will never understand the above the ankle pant length. But hey, if that’s your thing go for it!
Subjective that is
What about a dark army green suit? What shoes match
Go to 5:33
Dark brown dress shoes are not easy to find. Medium brown seems to predominate.
So in the event you’re wearing a pants and a blazer, I’m guessing you’d want to follow similar rules based on the pants , and of course the pants still need to contrast with the blazer.
Yes, and unless you like bold socks, you want socks to be closer to the pants color than the shoe. You don't need to match entirely, but having the sock the same color as your shoe makes it look more like a boot at quick glance.
Or you can darken you tan shoes. Better than sitting idle in your closet. Alas, I 've got two of them and I just brown them. Problem solve. Long time not seeing your post.
Wow extending the sponsor spot into the next segment since you know people will fast forward... sneaky
You can give TH-cam the credit for that trick. I didn’t make the chapters 🤷🏻♂️
Paused video at 0:27 to take a wild guess the color to avoid is: light brown
Now back to watching the video.
Edit: I nailed it! Only reason I knew is because I *do* own a pair of light brown (tan) shoes and indeed they are *not* versatile (I don’t do the tan shoe navy trouser thing).
It's weird because tan shoes I think look great with dark blue trousers, for example jeans. They also work well with olive green trousers IMO, brown trousers, and I think even black casual trousers. But if you're wearing a full navy or indigo suit, olive suit, it just looks weird with light tan shoes. I think it's about levels of formality, for that reason I think you can wear a dark blue or dark green suit with tan shoes if it's a tweed suit. I think it's because I live in the UK and in my head light tan brogues are a very "countrified" style of shoe
how would you style a tan four button suit would you wear spectators or dress boots ive worn both with the suit but which would be the best
I would choose based upon the color of the shoes/boots. I would choose any dressy shoes or boots in the brown range, or burgundy/oxblood, or navy.
Spectators and dress boots are a bit more on the casual side (compared to Oxfords or derbies), so they might not be the optimal choice for very dressy occasions.
I’d wear a tan suit with the Allen Edmonds Strandmok in dark brown.
🥃🎩
Navy suit with burgundy/ox blood shoes separates a man from all the other followers that go with brown shoes with the faded black tips on the toe box. Boring. Be bold, burgundy/oxblood looks beautiful with navy or grey suits. Match with a white or light blue shirt and a tie with burgundy/navy florals or stripes. FIRE!!!! thank me when the whole bridal party wants to go home with you!
Strange... Im over here thinking all the suits he used as examples to not pair with lighter brown shoes actually look good. Lost me at wearing shoes with a suit lol to each their own.
Do not microwave plastic..........!
Black suit bro? For funeral or what?
Funerals, black tie events, formal job interviews. Other than that, no need for a black suit.
NEVER EVER wear sneakers with a suit! Unless you're a peasant... Then you can.
so every shoe goes with every suit, just avoid tan ? I respect your opinion and I follow your advice but I have to say this video is absolutely useless.
I think his point was that if you are only going to have a few pairs of dress shoes, then the tan colors are much less versatile
I didn't say that every shoe goes with every suit.
Simply no to the sponsor
