The GOAT? I don't think Bill Self is there yet, but he should be in the conversation. If or when he wins another National Championship, then he for sure has a strong case for it. I mean he has already done something that no other coach has done or will probably ever do again. Winning 14 straight regular season Conference championships should be right up there with one of the greatest accomplishments in not only the history of college basketball, but one of the greatest sports accomplishments of all time period. And it doesn't nearly get the recognition that it deserves. The hardest thing to do in college basketball is winning a National Championship, but a very close second is to win your conference and Bill Self's Kansas Jayhawks did that year in and year out 14 straight times in one of, if not the, best conference top to bottom in America. No one has ever done that and some of the best coaches of all time never even got close to that. I think the most coach K got in a row was around 5. The same for Bobby Knight. UCLA had 13 but it took either two or three coaches to get it up to that point and that was in the era of players staying with the program for all four years. Players didn't leave to go to the NBA or transfer as often back then. People say he just had the best talent. There were years during that streak where he didn't have a single McDonald's All-American in the starting lineup. There were years where he had walk-ons in the starting lineup or play significant minutes. They had to beat teams that had players like Kevin Durant, Trae Young, Buddy Hield, Marcus Smart, Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldrige, Michael Beasly, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of other great college players in there. Coaches like Scott Drew, Bob Knight, Lon Kreuger, Rick Barnes, Bob Huggins, Eddie Sutton and a lot of other great coaches. It is incredible the amount of success that Bill Self has had in his years at Kansas. Currently he has as many Big 12 conference titles that he has home losses. Is the GOAT? No, at least not yet, but he should be in the conversation.
So unfortunate that he/KU got robbed of a National Championship in 2020. I will believe until I die that they would have won that year. No one could beat them.
It’s even crazier that Kansas just barely missed getting the 15th conference title in a row. They were still top of the league even with one of the weaker teams we’ve had. Now we’re back to regular schedule programming taking the big 12 title
I'm so glad my Jayhawks cut down the nets and Bill got another one, but I've got to give props to Hubert Davis. Pretty damn good for a first year D1 coach.
Porters D was great in full court in bound. The inbound press offense of Selfs was less than ideal considering the inbounds defender was in layoff position in that case inbounder after the make should run the long baseline because the sagging defender is only looking to trap so in effect its 5 on 4. But they had to burn that timeout which looked late in the 5 second count could've been a turnover.. An I FORMATION OR BOX WOULD BE BETTER FOR SCREENING AND GETTING TO A RECEPTION HOLE FOR THE PASSER . . It was a plus ➕ 7 from from the media timeout for chalks. AGREED ON EVERYTHING ELSE. HE COULD EVEN RUN THAT ELEVATOR ZIPPER AS A FULL COURT PRESSBREAKER.
Just think how good Bill Self could be if he would use a zone defense to break momentum more often. I know he's not a fan of it but the few times he has used it. It's been affective. But I not one to second guess the bug dog. His record is second to none
Part of the reason that those few times the zone defense has been affective for Bill Self is that the other teams don't expect them to run it, so they're unprepared for when it comes. When you're trying to prepare for Kansas picking plays to run against a Kansas zone defense probably doesn't cross an opposing coach's mind, so why waste time in practice if you're more than likely never going to see it. So, when it does come opposing teams look lost and confused because they're taken completely off guard. I think that if he does end up running a zone defense more often it will be less and less effective as time goes on, because teams will prepare for it. Now, one of the things that makes Self one of the best coaches ever is that he adapts his style to use the players that he has to work with to get them to play at their best. At the highest level. In the 20 years he's been at Kansas he has gone from being a coach that was almost exclusively running a high-low offense with two bigs, to a four around one with only one post player, to a small ball lineup with a 6' 7" as his 5 man (last season) and been successful with all of them. So, there may come a time where he ends up with a team that works better in a zone defense and ends up running that the majority of the time, but if Self doesn't have a reason to use it, then he isn't going to.
Self said after the game they told the refs they were going to foul in the frontcourt but Braun didn't really foul. Ref called it but it wasn't like he was trying to foul. Also, it is not a good play to foul up 3 because you bring the team behind into the game and put yourself in a situation having to inbound the ball if they don't intentionally miss the 2nd and get an offensive rebound. KU got lucky that OU didn't steal one of the 2 inbound passes and lucky the ref called the foul on OU instead of a travel on Braun. KU had a play similar to this at Texas Tech early in Self's tenure at KU and they hit Aaron Miles under the eye giving him a black eye and because he stumbled with the ball the ref called him for a travel, Tech got the ball back, scored, and won the game on a last second shot. It is dangerous to throw the ball long on the inbounds play because it gives the defense longer to get in front and steal or set up and draw a cheap charge. But it's also dangerous to inbound in a dead corner so you have to get someone open closer to mid-court if you can. OU's execution on the last play was poor because they didn't get someone going toward the goal on the inbounds and actually delayed the relay pass to the inbounder and the pass went backwards, killing the clock even more and only giving OU a desperation shot with 4 seconds left when many teams get a frontcourt shot off.
All the praise for a coach caught on a recording violating all kinds of rules. How many level one violations is the school looking at? The FBI, the NCAA is on his heels, go Kansas, win at all expense.
Caught doing what exactly? The NCAA didn’t catch Kansas or Bill Self do a damn thing. If they had that would have gotten punished but they haven’t. LOL, the NCAA is definitely not on Selfs heels. The FBI has determined that Kansas was defrauded. The NCAAs evidence is flimsy at best for those infractions.
Yes he is (I am totally not a biased Kansas fan)
